As Season 3 continues, we are finally getting more information about the mysterious big bads who are creating superhumans, at the same time that Vincent and Catherine are learning more about what it means to be engaged and actually enjoy this new status. Sometimes the secret to success in investigating the supernatural and in love is to stop moving long enough to make note of the small details. By doing this on both fronts, VinCat met with successful results. Meanwhile, Tess continued her bid for the Captain's chair and J.T. persisted in his quest to understand his possible new abilities.
I'm using some lyrics from Katy Perry's song "This Moment" in this review, since the whole theme of the hour seemed to revolve around not rushing aspects of life that ought to be savored.

Vincent and Cat: What with Vincent's long hospital shifts, Cat's hard work solving crimes, and both of their efforts to learn more about the new superhumans, there's little time for romance, much less wedding planning. Somehow, Vincent and Catherine both thought that making the wedding happen as soon as possible would help them normalize their relationship. But trying to rush an event as complicated, important, and meaningful as their wedding was so overwhelming and intimidating that it negated its own convenience. This was despite Heather's help. Cat's sister provided her own leftover plans from her thwarted wedding (to the invisible fiancé - sorry, can't help myself, haha). But while Heather likes the fancy, the frilly, and the fussy, Cat prefers simple all the way. The sad part is that poor Heather was trying to save some aspects of her own lost wedding experience and got too carried away in the process. At least after letting some of her sadness out, Heather seemed to feel better overall by the end of the episode. I have to say that even though Heather's been relegated to the sidelines of the main action so far this season, her interactions with both Vincent and Catherine are really fun and sweet. I hope Heather will find happiness again soon.

Also, RIP to the poor houseboat. However, I did have to laugh out loud at Cat's declaration that Vincent doesn't have a safety net anymore!
Bob and Carol: One aspect that might be somewhat undervalued about BatB is just how clever it can be. Case in point: new characters Bob and Carol (awesome guest stars Alan Van Sprang and Natasha Henstridge - excellent casting). While on the one hand, Bob and Carol function as perfect doppelgängers of VinCat's crime-fighting super-duo (attractive, highly capable, intelligent, both with strong personalities yet synched perfectly as a couple) and an example of how their relationship might develop once married...on the other hand, Bob and Carol are possibly sociopathic, and definitely killers. There's a twisted, dry humor to that whole scenario that I get a big kick out of. I liked the way the laughs of this element of the episode centered on how sincere Bob and Carol were in actually taking to Vincent and Cat, and how the advice on being engaged and married from these new frenemies was quite good despite their nefarious intentions in the grand scheme of things.
All in all, I'm glad these two weren't killed off and that they seem to be quite intent on sticking around to use Catherine and Vincent however they need to in order to achieve their mysterious goals. I am excited to see what Bob and Carol will be up to next, and especially who in the world is employing them, and to what end. Intriguingly, far from the confused messes that the last two superhuman-of-the-week characters were, Bob and Carol are smooth, calm, collected, and seem flawlessly adapted to their powers. What is it about these two that makes them so remarkably different from their antagonist-of-the-episode predecessors? Color me curious.
What's up with J.T.? First of all, if I thought there was a chance I might have super powers, I would totally make a list of the possibilities on a white board and then try to see if each one was true. The only hint we really got of J.T.'s potential abilities in this episode was some apparent rapid healing. Coupled with last week's hints of maybe heightened senses, I wonder what this is leading up to.

ReplyDeletelm glad the show is back on track season 2 took everything good about 1 and wrecked it , changing show runners affected the show just glad its becoming more like the old show again.

ReplyDeleteI loved this episode of BobAndCarol,VincentAndCatherine. This episode gave us everything and wrapped it all up superbly. I'm looking forward to see what this dangerous super-human couple is up to and it looks like Bob won't hesitate to pull the trigger and kill Cat. Little does Vincent know that Cat's life is great danger, this time saved by Carol talking Bob out of killing Cat right now. Mysterious and very intriguing episode. S3 is Fabulous so far.

ReplyDeleteI loved this episode!It had humor,villains,Heather and her irritating ways without meaning to be,Catherine and Vincent talking about hurrying along their wedding plans.It was an exciting episode.My only thing is I think they should have played out Tess's promotion more,but you are right,less episodes,so less time.

ReplyDeleteI'm loving the S3 - action, comedy and romance (although little). Unfortunately it seems close to S1 line. I really enjoyed this episode, but I found a serious flaw - Vincent struggling on the boat it takes to long to himself transform. I also notice that Cat is very controlling, sometimes even reckless, putting up Vincent's career at risk. I think this will change in the coming episodes.
i think cat reckless behaviour might get the team into trouble.she is just too gung-ho at the moment.while vin is just too chill at the moment.but i m just gonna come ahead and say it ,despite cat belief they r better than bob and carol,the fact is they r not and vin was right to point that out.
ReplyDeleteI am loving this season for many reasons as well-it's a great blend of realistic relationship moments, both friendship and romantic, and sci-fi/action suspenseful scenes, this formula that made s1 so Great is coming back. I love that they have a nack for making this anything but normal couple have normal problems. in the middle of a stakeout, searching for experimented on supernaturals with homeland security comes a call about colour schemes for their wedding? It's not just impressive but funny ;)
ReplyDeleteBut there are still things they need to work on. Cat is slightly improving but not by much. She is less judgy but still selfish in some ways, taking too many risks with Vincent's life and career for her own needs. It's starting to reflect badly on Vincent it's starting to make him look weak. Rarely have we seen Vincent not do what he felt was best even when he was fighting to get cat back, now all of the sudden he's compromising too much, why out of fear of losing her? If he continues this, it will start to weaken him even more and he won't be the strongest character on the show. And I appreciate the realistic approach to their relationship, but we still need the romance, we still look forward to the emotion of their relationship, the desperation to not keep their hands off of eachother, the reminder that they are an epic love who couldn't be more crazy about eachother. We've seen some of that but not enough.

ReplyDeleteI definitely agree about the whole Tess storyline, it's very rushed. I also wish that Cat had played a bit more of a role in this storyline on-screen. She was Tess's partner and I would have liked to see her supporting Tess a bit more, dealing with some feelings of sadness about losing her as a partner but overall being happy for her. I guess I just didn't get the feeling she cared enough. JT was the only one who felt really invested in Tess's story, which I find kind of sad. And I am slightly worried about what will happen now that her and Cat won't be partners. That best friend/partner dynamic was one of my favorite things about the show and their relationship. I really hope it doesn't drastically take away from the show. But maybe that's just me not liking change. Regardless, I'll really miss seeing Tess and Cat teaming up (although I'm sure we'll get a decent amount on the Beast side of things!). Other than that, I'm really loving this season. It feels very balanced without becoming too slow or boring. Thanks for the review, it was great!

ReplyDeleteI can't begin to tell you how much I dislike those features in the episode. Who wants to watch a romantic sci-fi show where the loving couple is plodding and sensible? Who can take the advice from a criminal seriously? Can anyone walk up to them and say epiphanies, isn't that making them out to be just a tad too naïve? I'd like to see a bit of intelligence in the characters of my favorite show.
And the ridiculous powers of B&C. A) slowing down time so that they can foresee the future. It is so mind-bogglingly stupid and illogical that it doesn't even fit in the made-up scientific babble of a TVshow . B) redirecting a bullet from a long range gun, for what purpose? So that the shooter cannot be traced quickly and can get away. THAT IS WHAT LONG RANGE GUNS ARE FOR , YOU MORONS! So that you have time to get away before they find the place. Redirection seems totally unnecessary. And anyway they forgot all about it in the final scene when planning to shoot in the park.
And the studious avoidance of any loving moments between V&C makes it glaringly obvious that TPTB are trying to manipulate us into protests and uproar in social media. Well guess what, manipulation has to be done with some finesse, not as heavy handed as this. Even B&C got to share a loving kiss while V&C just stood there looking glum.
Oh RAPID healing, i saw healing in the press release and immediately thought that he was like Chloe Sullivan-Queen from Smallville and Erin from The Messengers. Now it makes sense he's like Claire Bennett from Heroes.

You will laugh till your sides hurt, boo and hiss at the bad guys, cheer for the underdog, and sigh with contentment at the simple joy of friends hanging out together, the importance of family,and lovers sharing a stolen moment to be together! All in all I wouldn't miss watching this show!! # BATB
ReplyDeleteivan - I am right there with you on the matter of the houseboat. If I were Catherine I would have blown up that thing myself. Too many BAD memories of that red-headed trollop living there with Vincent. But this writer would have put those words in Catherine's mouth, because SHE was the one who wrote 216 and had Catherine wake up in THAT bed. I have a personal beef with this writer because she further ruined VinCat reunion by having Catherine say to Tess that her night with Vincent was just libido-driven meaningless break-up sex. There is no forgiving her for that line and I never understood why they needed to tarnish Catherine's character like that.

ReplyDeleteAgree totally with you about the lack of FEELING the emotions between our leading couple. When Vincent comes home, he does not even kiss her hello. I don't care how tired you are, you do at least that! Also, when Carol and Catherine come back from their little adventure, Bob grabs Carol - after nine years together - and kisses her quite passionately, while Vincent does nothing of the sort - and they are engaged for 2 only weeks. I totally miss the passion, too.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I think not seeing Cat and Tess working together enough, and not seeing the whole fab four working together enough is one of the fans' main issues with this season so far. Hopefully we'll get those moments in the episodes ahead. :)

ReplyDeleteWhen you stop looking at this show through Vincat rose-colored glasses you appreciate more the on-going narrative and the humour of S3 . Better a good comedy than a ridiculous melodrama. But I have to agree: the original magical vibe faded away in the middle of last season . No matter how hard they try to recreate it : When has anything ever been exactly the same the second time around ? And in all honesty the never-ending whining about their wedding plans is good to get a laugh but could suck the romance out of any meant-to-be pair .
ReplyDeleteI really agree about the first part of what you said. What really hooked me to this show in season 1 is the throw caution to the wind and fall in love with the "wrong boy ". That is what made it so romantic the pull to each other even though they knew it was wrong. That is what this show is about and we need it back to do justice to this epic love story.
ReplyDeleteI agree to a point. I like the comedy aspect of the show. I don't want them to or think they'd be able to rehash the melodrama of s1 and make it work, too been there done that. But they've gone a little too far the other way which might get a little boring. finding a balance would be the trick for me, the perfect balance of drama and emotion, romance With some comedic and lighter moments. which would fit great with current storylines. Not easy, but if they can find a way, with These extremely interesting characters, it would be perfect.

ReplyDeleteGreat review Debbie, the only thing I will add is that since getting tangled with Muirfield I believe Vincent is finally getting to that protective of all he lost and gained period of his life and he may feel he has to go along with all Catherine's ideas because he is a little unsure of his standing. Doesn't necessarily make him weak just cautious. #BATB

ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I also see Cat as the strong character. I don't feel Vin is weak. And remember he doesn't want to do anything that would change his relationship with Cat. His perception of staying normal is not "beasting" out. I am enjoying the show as it is. The let us enjoy. At least we are not worrying about cancellation. I enjoy them working the cases and Vin using all those big words.

I know that in my life same thing I'm ex military because I wanted something to talk with my dad about, then finished my nursing degree. So I like things done my way and now😁was really hard because my then fiancé s family said he needed to grow a pair and stand up to me more. We had many rough patches that WE had to figure out together that worked for us. We've been married for 17 years. So as long as Vincent and Catherine find their path together, no matter how bumpy it gets along the way, then they will be all the stronger because of it! Hoorah! #BATB

ReplyDeleteI loved the houseboat scene of their getting ready in the morning. It was such a "couples" moment, especially when she was buttoning his shirt. I think they are moving into a comfortable "couple" stage without even realizing. Living with anyone takes a lot of adjustment for both parties.

ReplyDeleteI have not seen this episode. USA episodes began June 11, 2015. It is good to have a sister to talk to, but your best friend usually know all the skeletons in the closet. Heather is the younger sister. Who really confides and takes advise from the younger sister. I like Heather when she is more carefree and gets in a good thought once and awhile. I do not want her to become too serious. I am enjoying our chats.

ReplyDeleteThere is nothing to be done anymore about S3: it is done and dusted (like the English say). And they are already almost halfway through S4 and Brad Kern is NOT changing directions easily. Last year almost everybody was loudly roaring about the stupid love triangles and how much they hated that red-headed, boyfriend stealing, remorselessly murdering trollop being with Vincent and all he did (and it is not clear that he did it because of the fans) was to cut out a second kissing session between her and Vincent and her half-naked asleep in Vincent's arms (212).
ReplyDeleteAnd believe me, there were lots of complaints about the next triangle between Catherine and the 'one whose name we will never mention anymore' and all to no avail. On the contrary, one of the 'inventors' - I forgot if it was Sherri or Jennifer - actually twittered to the fans after they asked her if there would be 'romance for Valentine's' (at that time we were still hoping that Catherine would come to her senses) and she responded with 'yes, there will be romance'. That was really cruel and it would have been better if she had NOT responded AT ALL, because we all know what happened in 'Till Death' when Catherine was NOT kissing Vincent like we were all hoping, but the completely wrong guy - and even worse: took off to Mexico with him.
So much on the subject 'fanpower'. The only power you really have as a fan is 'the power of good-bye'. Of course, THAT is never going to happen. I suffered through S2 - I can take S3. Although, my loyalty is really being tested in the next episode - I cannot believe what they did to my lovely Catherine there.....
Ivan, without being too spoilerish, did you like Catherine in this episode? I was appalled and thought she was on too many espressos, especially when interrogating the old man.
