Starz has given a greenlight to FremantleMedia North America's (FMNA) adaptation of Neil Gaiman's acclaimed contemporary fantasy novel American Gods. Bryan Fuller ("Hannibal," "Pushing Daisies," "Heroes") and Michael Green ("The River," "Kings," "Heroes"), will pen and showrun the series. Gaiman will also executive produce the series. FremantleMedia NORTH AMERICA will produce. Start of production is dependent on casting the lead role of "Shadow Moon."
Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said, "STARZ is committed to bring American Gods to its legions of fans. With our partners at FremantleMedia and with Bryan, Michael and Neil guiding the project, we hope to create a series that honors the book and does right by the fans, who have been casting it in their minds for years. The search for Shadow begins today!"
Commented Neil Gaiman, "I am thrilled, scared, delighted, nervous and a ball of glorious anticipation. The team that is going to bring the world of American Gods to the screen has been assembled like the master criminals in a caper movie: I'm relieved and confident that my baby is in good hands. Now we finally move to the exciting business that fans have been doing for the last dozen years: casting our Shadow, our Wednesday, our Laura..."
Commented Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, "Almost 15 years ago, Neil Gaiman filled a toy box with gods and magic and we are thrilled to finally crack it open and play. We're grateful to have Starz above us and FremantleMedia at our backs as we appease the gods, American or otherwise."
Craig Cegielski, Co-CEO, FremantleMedia NORTH AMERICA said "'American Gods' has been the passion project for us at FMNA since Stefanie Berk brought this exceptional piece of literature to the company when she joined two years ago. Chris, Carmi and the entire team at Starz are committed partners, sharing the same creative vision and ambition for this series. Neil's novel is a brilliant work of art, and together with the talented Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, we are committed to delivering a series that is nothing short of extraordinary."
The 2001 novel has been translated into over 30 languages and earned numerous accolades including Hugo, Nebula and Bram Stoker Awards for Best Novel. The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of biblical and mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society's modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.
FremantleMedia North America's Craig Cegielski and Stefanie Berk will executive produce the series along with Bryan Fuller, Michael Green and Neil Gaiman. Senior Vice President of Original Programming Ken Segna will be the Starz executive in charge of "American Gods." Starz will retain all network pay TV and SVOD rights to the project. FremantleMedia will distribute the series worldwide.

I have the book on my Kindle. Should probably finally read it!
ReplyDeleteThe book really disappointed me but I'm looking forward to this adaption, its been in the works for a while I think HBO originally planned to do it. Fuller being in charge is a good sign.
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing news! Been wanting this for years.
ReplyDeleteLove the book(s), Love Mr Fuller (Hannibal is a dream!) , very much looking forward to this!
ReplyDeleteOmggg yes finally it gets picked up can't wait to see who they cast. Hopefully they announce it soon.
ReplyDeleteVery interested to see how this will look on screen! Very impressed with what Fuller has done with Hannibal so far, so I have hopes he can make this even richer than the novel.
ReplyDeleteYES!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI am ridiculously excited about this.
ReplyDelete- Jason is ideal for a lot of reasons... but I agree he might be a tad too busy... and honestly not my first pick on further thought. Hie eyes lack the kindness I expect from Shadow.
ReplyDelete- Wentworth: I like him but he's all types of wrong for this...
- I'm with you on Sunjata
- Jesse Williams is a decent "maybe", but I think Grey's will keep him busy, and IMO he's also not physically big enough (pretty much one of the issues I have over Wentworth)
- So much YES on Howard Charles! (though it depends as I'm not too keen on the Musketeers ending, but if it does, YES! Don't know how his American accent is though...)
- I like Kodjoe, but there's something about him that just doesn't work for me in theory...
I will say, if this was like 15 years ago, the ROCK all the way... but alas, he is too old now...
Really? I loved it! (Anansi Boys was better though...)
ReplyDeleteHBO would have been great for it, but after Spartacus and what they've been doing since, I think Starz is just as good a place.
I also think Fuller is so the perfect guy for this job though, it's not even funny!
Jason would be perfect but yeah he is too busy with films I think.
ReplyDeleteDon't let them change its content...
ReplyDeleteI really loved the concept but it just didn't work for me as a story. I feel like this about a lot of Gaiman's work. My favourite of his books is probably The Good Omens and considering he co-wrote it with Pratchett that is probably why I like it.
ReplyDeleteDid you know that the BBC are doing a Anansi Boy adaption? Think its airing sometime this year.
I'm happy, but I'm gonna need some casting before I can get excited, since I love the book so much.
ReplyDeleteAwww, you love American Gods too? Did you read the sequel novellas? I read "The Monarch of the Glen " which was great, haven't read the new one that's in 'Trigger Warnings', but I love Shadow and the American Gods universe so much, I'll take any sequel/adaptation I can get.
ReplyDeletePretty much my feeling son all of them... I pictured Momoa as I read, but I only read it a couple years back now...
ReplyDeleteNone of the available actors I listed feel perfect to me so I'm hoping someone I have not thought or maybe even never heard of gets the role.
Some people have suggested Manu Bennett for the role I know, but as much as I like him he feels wrong for the part to me. Not sure why...
ReplyDeleteHe does have that STARZ connection having worked on Spartacus..... Who knows....
starz is becoming better and better
ReplyDeleteHmmm..
ReplyDeleteJust thought of Geno Segers who played Chayton on Banshee. He certainly has the stature for the role, but I haven't seen him act all that much. The Banshee role was awesome, but fairly limited range wise....
Anyone seen him act on anything other than Banshee?
I pictured a younger Dwayne Johnson... :P
ReplyDeleteSeriously he's IT for me... but I know that's a no go...
I was thinking of Manu too, and even though I don't hate it, there's something about that casting I can't get 100% on board with either...
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen him in anything but I looked him up and you're right, physically at least he does fit the bill...
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any of the sequel novellas but I really should, I love Niel Gaiman's stories. He's an honest-to-God fantastic storyteller! I'll check out the sequel novellas ASAP.
ReplyDeleteLove Gaiman. Very excited for this
ReplyDeleteThat's funny, I love Good Omens but, having read their individual works I credit Gaiman not Pratchett for why that book is so good.
ReplyDeleteMomoa also has The Red Road on IFC so he's pretty busy with TV and Movies which is good/bad depending on your POV
ReplyDeleteManu has a show on MTV (I believe) not sure if that would preclude him from doing another show.
ReplyDeleteI didn't hear he was cast as Allanon in Shannara!
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Not sure I like that casting honestly... Hmmm.
Certainly not how I pictured Allanon, but maybe it can work....
Red Road was cancelled after Season 2, but he will be busy anyway!
ReplyDeleteAquaman..... I never got that hero! XD
Love the title!
ReplyDeleteOh, I didn't know it was cancelled. Bummer, I just started watching.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know either until I was looking at some Momoa links and noticed it.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Season 1, but I haven't seen Season 2 yet. I was saving it to watch this Summer when things calm down after the World Cup. Hopefully there is a good resolution to the series....
I love his stories too, some of his novels I love more or less, but even if I don't always love the execution or ending, his ideas are so creative, I love the worlds and characters he creates. 'Monarch of the Glen' is in 'Fragile Things', a collection of short stories. Some are better than others, I haven't finished reading it, because 'Monarch' was the one I was really interested in, the rest are just short stories to read whenever I feel like it.
ReplyDeleteWeird isn't it? I'm not like a huge Pratchett fan but I've definitely enjoyed his books more than Gaiman, even if Gaiman does have some very interesting ideas.
ReplyDeleteI guess I could see Manu. Its a difficult role to get right.
ReplyDeleteI always end up slightly disappointed because Gaiman's books always seem right up my alley and then I can't click with them. I don't know why it is!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes the BBC Anansi Boys adaptation, I guess it may not happen until 2016 now as the wiki page its a bit empty but its meant to be in the works.
I'm telling you Good Omens is good because they're both involved. They covered each other's weaknesses and it's why it has such a huge appeal!
ReplyDeleteCasting will be super important!
ReplyDeleteMaybe, they're putting it on hold and they might try to connect it to this if it's a success and do a co-production with starz...?
ReplyDeleteJust spitballin' here.
Perhaps. BBC have been doing a lot of co-productions lately.
ReplyDeleteYa know, I've been thinking and if he wasn't busy with The 100, I'd say Ricky Whittle would be a pretty candidate for #CastingShadow
ReplyDeleteYes, it will be, but I've got quite a bit of faith in Fuller when it comes to casting, he's done pretty well on Hannibal and at least he's publicly stated he won't white-wash Shadow, so that's a good start.
