No! Because if you haven't figured that much out 15 minutes into the first episode then you're not paying attention and probably shouldn't even bother watching because you're going to be totally confused by the end of the second or third episode.
And two: suspicions, speculations and theories are fine, and I do have few myself, but until someone who hasn't read the books doesn't see it in the show it is a spoiler. And so far they haven't exactly been explicit about how the situation works.
So if you've read the books and you know please keep it yourself, and if you are speculating yourself try to be explicit that this is in fact a theory of yours.
I haven't read the books, It was a speculation I just didn't spell it out because I really didn't think I had to. It is Spoiler TV and in episode 1 how 13 years had gone by for the partner he was looking for when in reality it had only been a few days or weeks. Or in Episode 2 when he asked the woman (who was helping him) "what year is it? 1999, Who's the president? Clinton. He then tells her it's 2013 and she has been there a lot longer than 1 year.
Time clearly works differently here, that's for sure, and it could be an alternate reality.
My main theory though is that they are in some sort of suspended animation, where your consciousness is still active, because people ending up there after they've had some weird accident is little too fishy IMO...
Wow I didn't even think of that, but that makes perfect sense. I actually like your theory better than the one I had. That everyone there are lab rats.
My theory is slightly different, although it involves suspended animation. I think a bunch of people were kidnapped at various points in time (some in 1999, some in 2014, etc.) and were placed in suspended animation, and then in the distant future they're woken up at various times in those town. So Beverley was kidnapped in 1999, and was woken up 1 year before Ethan was woken up. Kate and the dead secret service agent were kidnapped 5 weeks before Ethan was kidnapped, but were woken up 12 years before Ethan was woken up. I think the government knew that humanity was going to suffer some calamity some time soon, so they kidnapped various people and placed them in suspended animation until the calamity is over. I think the reason you can't leave is that due to the calamity the rest of the Earth is now inhabitable or something. I think the brain problems that Ethan had (which led him to see hallucinations of his wife and son) are an after-effect of having been in suspended animation for so long. So basically the government lured a bunch of people to Idaho, staged a bunch of car accident, put these people in suspended animation, and woke them in the distant future, pretending like their brain problems are just due to a head injury from the car accident.
I wrote my earlier comment before Thursday's episode aired, but I think Thursday's episode makes my theory even more plausible, given that we now know that there are some kind of creatures on the other side of the fence. That suggests that the Earth outside the town is inhospitable.
I saw it when you'd written before the episode, and I was waiting to see how 1x03 turned out before I commented to see how the new installment might affect your theory.
And I agree. The episode did make your idea even more plausible.
So it looks like I got things almost exactly right, except I didn't know that the monsters were evolved human beings. I just thought humanity was wiped out by nuclear war or something, and the government foresaw it and took measures to save the human race from extinction. But actually it was about "preserving" the human race from continued evolution.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Wow a story about a town that's not in the same reality or dimension as the rest of us. So far it's turning out to be pretty good.
ReplyDeleteDid you just spoil the whole thing?

HHhmmm.... does sound somewhat plausible... I can get behind that theory...
