  1. Empire going as high as it did. I still don't get the appeal of it, I'll be surprised if it holds for very long though.

Empire's domination. I didn't expect much from it before it aired but WOW...

Also this just reminded me of Utopia...I totally forgot that existed. So the people were supposed to be in isolation for a year right? Did they get pulled out after 8 weeks or do they still think they're on the air?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Utopia got pulled. They all went home.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Empire for sure, but The Blacklist getting its ass kicked @ Thursdays was a big surprise too.

Not surprised Castle has dived - the season wasn't up to scratch in a lot of areas, and yet another showrunner change won't help its cause heading into S8.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I'm bit surprised by VD's decline. I understood people leaving last year but this year was quite well executed.
Empire came out of nowhere. Interested to see how S02 will look like rating wise at least. I'm not watching the show.

    ReplyDelete
  6. NCiS:LA while decline some has held its own.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Never watched it. The show is originally from The Netherlands and it's actually still on there (second season). Can't believe it, cause I think the format is just weird, but whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I watched it on the livestreams and a bit of the Dutch version as well but the States have such a crap track record with that sort of stuff. The producers were too heavily involved and the colonists were retards who were chosen specifically because they would either hook up or argue. It could have been great if it was done properly.

On the other hand, ITV's The Island With Bear Grylls is exactly how such a concept should be executed.

  9. other : the buzz once upon a time garnered thanks to frozen. i knew the movie was popular but i didn't expect it to positively impact OUAT ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Oh yh I forgot about that, that really surprised me as well. I wasn't even expecting it to get near 3.0 and then it got 3.5!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Sleepy Hollow becoming the failure it became.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Empire of course!

Other- Revenge hitting Sub 1s which it did not deserve at all

    ReplyDelete
  13. Empire success
    Revenge cancellation
OUAT big ratings at the beggining of the fall

    ReplyDelete
  14. Empire
    Laura
    Blacklist
    NBC
    The Millers

The Originals was clear after being sent to Mondays
I always thought Jane would be renewed as it looked cheaper and great replacement for Dixie

    ReplyDelete
  15. You've made a mistake by putting TVD and TO as one option, cause I knew TVD would fall (come one, even hardcore fans must have started to see the light), but didn't expect that for TO.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Empire's success. Before the season began, I thought it would get canceled.

Also, the fall of CBS procedurals, The Millers being pulled from the schedule, Laura lasting an entire season and The Blacklist sadly hitting a 1.2.

    ReplyDelete
  17. How is that a surprise that Jane the Virgin got renewed? The show brought the first award EVER to the CW, and rating wise it's not the worst one of it network. The real surprise for me was that Reign got renewed so fast. Now it consistently goes under 1 million viewers each week. Apparently the CW just wanted something for its Fridays.

But the biggest surprise was definitely Empire. Never saw that one coming.

    ReplyDelete
  18. -I don't think anybody could have predicted Empire's success.
    -The Blacklist falling so hard
    -MoL still in air
    -The rest is not surprising.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think they meant before the season began, did you expect any of these to happen? We only knew the premise for Jane. Not how acclaimed it would become.

  20. I think they meant before the season began. Did you expect any of these to happen? We only knew the premise for Jane. Not how acclaimed it would become.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Whoops, I didn't read the title completely! Ok, then forget about the ratings, but the critics were already very good for Jane, even before the show started. I remember hearing a lot about it and how good it was at the end of the summer, which made me watch the show, even though I never watch shows from the CW.
So I still don't think that was a massive surprise.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1.Empire Monster level success.
    2.JtV getting renewed.
    3.The Blacklist hitting 1.2.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The Blacklist hitting a 1.2. This was NBC's strongest scripted performer since Heroes and it completely collapsed on its own. Usually hits like that hold up better, especially now.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The fall of CBS can be attributed to too many procedurals at the same time on the same network. And unfortunately, FOX is making the same mistake with genre shows and CW with superhero/sci fi shows. It's too much of the same thing and it's not appealing to a wide enough audience.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The Mysteries of BobMay 16, 2015 at 2:00 PM

    1- Empire monster
2- Jane and LMOE being renewed
3- Blacklist hitting a 1.2, unbelievable (lol NBC)
    4- Laura renewed (lol NBC)
    5- The Millers pulled

    ReplyDelete
  26. The first time I heard about Empire, I said 'What the hell is Taraji doing there?!'

    ReplyDelete
  27. The Vampire Diaries has declined in part because there are a number of new and fresh shows, particularly on the CW, which are aimed at the same demographic and which are doing extremely well. The current popular trend is superheroes and it's rapidly growing stronger, while TVD isn't a novelty anymore and the vampire craze has died down. Also, Season 5 was a disaster and I think a lot of viewers gave up on the show and just never came back, so it would actually have been logical to expect a decline. The show runner and producers knew that and tried to get things back on track in Season 6. I think they delivered some very good TV despite the obvious manipulation of the lead-up to Nina Dobrev's exit, including a fabulous new villain, the introduction of the Salvatore brothers' Ripper mom, and a greater concentration on the characters as in Season 1.

There is still life left in TVD. Some characters are now gone, which I actually see as an opportunity to move the show in different directions. Hopefully we're done with love triangles and shipping which got so crazy in the past, to the detriment of the show. Last week's season finale set us up for a return to more darker and dangerous story lines and I welcome that. As someone who plans to stick with the show to the hopefully not bitter end, I have hopes for at least a modest ratings increase rather than a decline over the next season. If it's to be the last season, so be it. As Damon once said, "It's been a hell of a ride."

  28. The ridiculous negative effect of the whole overblown by fans Katrina role on Sleepy Hollow.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Same here. The first teaser clips looked awful.

But Empire did one thing well, it sold itself well to urban media outlets which according to reports makes up between 60% to 80% of its total live weekly audience.

FOX made a mistake passing on Studio City. It would have hit a wider outlet net, which would have created two Empires on the same network.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Agreed. Ratings fell because the show could not sustain itself. Ratings will likely be worse in season 3, and Katrina isn't around as the convenient scapegoat. Eventually the show itself will get the correct blame.

    ReplyDelete
  31. it won't. It has Rosewood as a lead in, not American Idol and these shows that survive on buzz fizzle quickly.

Look at Scandal and it's ratings slump. Once the OMG moments get saturated, the show heads on a spectacular downward spiral in the ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I thought Empire was going to get a Friday slot with Glee and premier to a 1.5 LOL.
OUAT premier ratings surprised a lot of people; weird it isn't here (I predicted it would get 3+ though).

    ReplyDelete
  33. Other- Arrow rising in ratings despite its terrible season

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'd say probably the one that most surprised me was Empire getting 5.& higher

    ReplyDelete
  35. Empire going as high as it went

The Last Man On Earth and Jane the Virgin being renewed

    The Blacklist hitting a 1.2

NBC having a scripted average in the low 1s

The Mindy Project receiving a full season

    ReplyDelete
  36. How would I know if a poll I submitted has been thrown out of the circus?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Let me take this opportunity to say you were right and I was wrong about the sleeping curse. I will never doubt you again, oh great one! LOL! I still don't particularly like the sleeping curse thing but after seeing the episode a few times I have to admit that it gave Elena the opportunity to say goodbye to her loved ones, and they to her. Maybe that could have been accomplished if she had been on her deathbed the way Caroline connected with Liz, but I admit that wasn't exactly the same thing. The season finale was kind of a gift, or a love letter, to the fans which wouldn't have happened if Elena had died outright. And I'll be forever grateful for Elena and Damon's dance in the very spot they first met, bringing to mind images of them in "Miss Mystic Falls". My last image of Delena - unless Elena magically returns in the series finale - is a glorious one and I couldn't have asked for more.

  38. NBC having a scripted average in the low 1s hit the hardest in overall network approach, because NBC's push for live programming and variety shows is a direct result of having limited scripted success. Instead of trying new scripted shows, they changed paths and became a magnet for live programming.

It's quite surprising that in the last four years of development, the only two scripted shows NBC can claim has lasting competitiveness on roster is Chicago Fire and Chicago PD. Grimm and The Blacklist has survived, but both are on a massive decline. Shows like Undateable, The Night Shift, and The Mysteries Of Laura are likely to be on schedule. The first needed a format change to fit their live programming initiative, the other two are not competitive but helped by corporate interests. That's not good to claim two scripted victories out of four years of work.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Nothing was quite as shocking as Empire soaring that high. Everything else was either predictable or only mildly surprising.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Undateable is funny as hell! It's not lucky to be on the schedule!

    ReplyDelete
  41. It might be funny, but it also pulled a 1.3 in its season finale after The Voice. That's not great for any show after The Voice.

The format change and a Friday timeslot should help the ratings though as it will face less competition and there's the who will show up factor now.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I differ from you in hoping that Sleepy Hollow will bounce back to better show running and higher ratings in Season 3 as I have found it absolutely delightful, for the most part, and enjoy Ichabod's funny head butting with the modern world as much as I do anything on TV.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Other: Agent Carter declining throughout the season (except episode 1x06, where I think it went up a little). It's a shame, because it's one of the best shows imo, I thought the ratings would have been better.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Castle and NCIS:LA did not drop at all. What did happen there is a drop in first view. However, with the Live +7 dvr ratings they are exactly the same before the change in the rating system.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I don't think that's the reason the procedurals have fallen. CBS has been fine the past few seasons when they had as many procedurals as they have now. Also, nearly every procedural did fine when it returned or premiered in the fall. During spring, everything collapsed.

    ReplyDelete
  46. WHEN DID BLACKLIST HIT 1.2???? I'm so behind in the TV world. Stupid university.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I agree, the sleeping curse theory sounded childish on paper but it turned to be better than expected. It wasn't perfect like season 1 or 3 finale but it was pretty powerful.I liked it.
As for my predictions,i told you before-When it comes to TVD predictions,i'm almost always right :-)

    ReplyDelete
  48. It was as close to perfection as a show can get and it deserved better ratings. Peggy and Jarvis were a miracle of pairing.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think it will have a Desperate Housewives trajectory from now on. Hard to imagine storylines will always be fresh and intriguing for seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I have to add in one extra: The sudden decline of Scandal starting from episode 15. The show was holding up incredibly well for the first 14 episodes, even slightly outdrawing Season 3, and all of a sudden it just went down to Season 1 levels for the last 8 episodes. Given that Scandal had mixed reviews from the start of Season 3, one has to wonder why the sudden decline at this time. I have to say, the B613 storyline with Papa Pope always winning and insulting Olivia time and time again, as well as the "White Hat" Team's on-again, off-again soap opera of having a bit of hope, then ranting off and getting crazy eyes when they failed, must have caused the decline. Huck and Quinn, once fan favorites became quite annoying, since they just ramble off in monologues or kill people or have cringeworthy make-out sessions. I think taking away Quinn (plus the loss of Harrison) from OPA also hurt, as the team dynamic is now Olivia Pope with two psychopaths.

  51. The Blacklist moving to thursdays is something I didn't expect it should of stayed where it was. NBC Lmfaoo

    ReplyDelete
  52. I totally agree. I understand that a lot of people gave up on The Vampire Diaries after that horrific Traveler heavy season but it really picked up for me this season. That said, I don't see it continuing past next season with all of the people pissed about Nina's exit. I, personally, think it needed to happen. While I enjoyed Nina in Doppelgänger mode, I grew soooo tired of Elena and won't miss her.

As for Empire, I'm surprised it did so well. I'm not a fan or R&B or hip hop but checked it out because one of the creators is a Buffy alumni and I loved Taraji on Person of Interest. She rocks that Cookie Lyon role and I found myself sucked in.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Castle and NCISLA have both declined in part because they essentially share the same audience and fans are having to choose one or the other. NCISLA was hurt badly by losing its Tuesday night slot. The show has been treated poorly by CBS this season.

    ReplyDelete
  54. We'll have to wait and see, maybe people will comeback after they found out the Delena drama is over and if it gets promoted enough people maybe return. Unlikely but still could happen. The thing going good for VD it has an international fanbase and could pull and pass season 7. But don't think they'll pass season 8. But who knows?

I didn't watch Empire, the only thing I liked about it was the song they used to promote it on Fox Adria. The ratings are a huge surprise, but people have mixed feelings about at least here.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Definitely Empire. I watched the first episode and I still don't see the appeal.

All the others were, for me, predictable.

    ReplyDelete
  56. The Blacklist had an incredibly terrible season. Lots of stupid plots, lot of things that didn't make sense, a lot of stuff in season 1 being either forgotten or completelly changed to fit season 2. So not surprising.

To me the biggest surprise is Jane The Virgin. It had such a stupid premise I never expected it to last at all.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Most sites quote the number as 60% which means that even without the so-called "urban" viewers, it would be getting ratings of around 2.5 in the 18-49 demo, which would be better than most shows. I think Empire has definitely dispelled the ridiculous notion that white viewers will not watch a show with a predominantly black cast. So I'd say that Fox clearly didn't make a mistake. They picked the show that would have astronomical ratings in the 18-49 demo, and now they are reaping the benefits from sponsors. .As far as I'm concerned, once you're in that targeted demo, a viewer is a viewer period. Shows that have predominantly white viewers clearly have a less diverse audience, but they are not faulted for not having a "wider outlet net".

    ReplyDelete
  58. Empire being the rating mega hit it was (and honestly I'm not 100% sure it can hold on to those numbers...)

LMoE and JtV being renewed and being the critic darlings they are. This is what I say sometimes a silly idea can work if the execution is good!

The CSI collapse... I thought I wouldn't live to see the day... but lo and behold!

    ReplyDelete
  59. "Grimm and The Blacklist have survived"

You are incredibly biased. Grimm is syndicated and has a whole new season ahead, after four years on Fridays. How many shows have done that? And The Blacklist didn't "survive." It was automatically renewed through Season 4 when Netflix paid the ridiculous amount of $2 million per episode.

Chicago Fire, what you like to call "NBC's strongest show" got a lower rating after a higher lead-in than The Blacklist got after a SVU repeat, and Chicago PD still has a long run until syndication.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Empire, a show I was NOT going to watch, being the hit it turned out to be and The Mysteries of Laura not only making it a full season but getting a second season. most of the ratings declines didn't surprise me at all.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Empire having those crazy ratings and Jane The Virgin being renewed, even though I watch the latter, I thought JTV would lose its viewers - must have stayed for the narrator. :P haha (Originally, that is why I decided to watch JTV after seeing the first episode and then later I surprisingly got interested in the characters enough to quite enjoy watching the show - it's fun).

    ReplyDelete
  62. Agreed, Season 1 & 3 finales were awesome. For a freshman show Season 1's finale was even brilliant IMO.
Despite my comments above, and I meant them, I can't help recognizing the calculation behind this season's finale. It leaves open the possibility of bringing Elena back in some way, maybe for the series finale, and I'll bet they have possible scenarios for that already. I guess producers and show runners have to leave every possible option open.
I look forward to your predictions and comments for Season 7. I really wish it wouldn't be the last season but like life, unfortunately that's not under my control. Is there a god of TV shows I can pray to? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  63. Since CW president Mark clearly said in the upfronts that they have no plans to end TVD this season and Julie has already said they have come up with Season 7 cliffhanger to launch Season 8-Unless the ratings completely collapse(Which i highly doubt),i'd say season 8 is happening-short or full.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Love the Originals and the vampire diaries I thought they were both good season finales but sad

    ReplyDelete
  65. Good list! Voted for empire and millers

    ReplyDelete
  66. 1. Empire's success
    2. The Last Man on Earth and Jane the Virgin being renewed
    3. The Blacklist hitting a 1.2
    4. The Goldbergs outrating The Middle
    5. The decline of Castle and NCIS: LA

    ReplyDelete
  67. It was because Scandal became the one thing that a show like it shouldn't become-boring. Season 3, as ridiculous as it was, it was never boring. Season 4 wasn't either until after the save Olivia arc.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I think Season 3 is actually quite awful in terms of storyline, and Season 4 was better, but less exciting. Season 3 had so many WTF moments like Huck pulling Quinn's tooth, Mama Pope chewing wrists and Sally Langston becoming crazy. Election year is always exciting, both in real life and on tv.
