The Whispers - X Marks the Spot - Series Premiere - Advance Preview/Review

ABC’s The Whispers seems like a compelling though somewhat slow paced summer mystery series.

A group of young children are being manipulated by a mysterious mutual imaginary friend Drill, into doing the unimaginable including killing their own parents.

Our protagonist is FBI Agent Claire Bennigan (Lily Rabe) who is still mourning the death of her husband Sean, whose plane mysteriously crashed in Alaska 3 months ago and was never found – this happened during a troubled time in their relationship when her husband found out she was having an affair with his best friend Wes and she is still haunted by the guilt.
Claire is living as a single mother to their deaf son Henry and just returned to working for the FBI after a long leave of absence.
Claire begins investigating a series of cases involving children claiming to have been manipulated by an imaginary friend only to discover a mysterious man has been stalking these children and his description matched that of her dead husband.

Meanwhile Wes is investigating a strange crash site in the west African Sahara for the military. There he finds a crashed plane, a strange rock structure and mysterious footprints. He is shocked to discover that the plane is the very same one Sean was flying when he went missing in Alaska. Elsewhere, a strange tattooed man wakes up in a hospital with no recollection of his identity. He talks in his sleep in languages he doesn’t even know. He is then broken out of the hospital by a mysterious little girl.

The identity of Drill remains a mysterious, is he an alien? is it Claire’s husband Sean? and if so is he himself or is he possessed? How does the mysterious rock in the desert connect to this? And how did Sean’s plane that went missing in Alaska end up in Africa? And some people in the white house seem to know something they are not sharing.

The series asks a lot of questions and provides few answers in the pilot episode. The series needs to pick up the pace in the coming episodes and start giving some answers but so far it does have an interesting setup and i am curious to see where it goes.

  2. It was definitely the best pilot I've seen in a long time. I really think you should give it a try.

  4. Geez you made it sound boring, no offense. When i read some other reviews they made it sound like one of the best premieres in years.

  7. It depends on what we consider flop. By all accounts, Mistresses was also a flop and it is going to begin its third season. I have a hard time understanding the expectations for summer shows. They are clearly expected to do better than repeats but lower than originals. Where in between is the question.
ABC was pretty open to renewing bridge shows this year (which I think have the same rationale as summer shows) so I would guess they wouldn't need much to renew this either. We'll see.

  8. The pairing is quite nonsensical though but I hope it has enough outside interest to do ok.
