  • 10:52 - Scream - Buzzfeed Interview - How MTV’s “Scream” Will Be Like “Friday Night Lights”

On the show, Noah Foster (John Karna) says, “You can’t do a slasher movie as a TV series.” Let’s start right there. Can you?

Jill Blotevogel: You absolutely can. That statement for me was essentially saying to everybody who was going to question and doubt and have issues with it, I wanted to let them know I was absolutely aware of the [challenge] of doing something like this, and yet we were still going to find a way to do it and entertain the heck out of them. Essentially, it’s just a wink to the audience who love horror movies and realize they exist in 90 minutes and yet we’re going to take it in a different way. I also worked on a show called Harper’s Island, which attempted a similar sort of thing. It was more of a classic Agatha Christie, Ten Little Indians kind of thing. It’s definitely possible.

Jaime Paglia: It’s really, really hard. When I came on to do this with Jill, that line in particular was the reason I thought it might be possible, because we are acknowledging the challenges right out of the gate. It’s the self-referential humor; the wink and nod to the audience to say, “Hey, listen, come along for the ride. We think we’ll make it worth your while.” And that’s what we’re doing.

JB: And of course the bookend to that is Noah’s line later in the episode, when he sort of counters and says, “Well, maybe you can do it if you fall in love with the characters, if you understand the Friday Night Lights of it, and then realize that, yes, there’s a horror movie going on here as well.”

Right. He says in order to make these deaths matter, you have to care about the characters. So are you basically writing a dramatic TV series where people are being murdered?

    JB: Yes.

JP: I think that’s definitely accurate. What we try to do in every moment is separate out the fact that this is a town where people are being stalked and look at them individually as characters, figure out what their secrets and lies are, and what their relationship dynamics are going to be. So if you were to watch this as a regular teen soap, you would be engaged with them and care about them and the stakes would be there. We do end up having Friday Night Lights with life-and-death stakes.

JB: And it’s also creating more of a mystery around the murders than ever existed in the Scream movies. It’s kind of like the way Twin Peaks used the death of Laura Palmer to set off this chain reaction of looking deep into the underbelly of that small town. We’re kind of using that format more than the Scream movies ever did. They always went fast and furious with a body count, whereas ours is going to take its time a little more and dig into the mystery a little more.

  • 09:12 - Law and Order SVU - Season 16 Finale - Showrunner Warren Leight Interview with THR

In the final moments of the finale, an injured Amaro (Danny Pino) informed Benson (Mariska Hargitay) of his intention to retire from the NYPD and move closer to his family. "I know I wasn't what your old partner was for you," he said.

"No, you weren't. I grew more in my last four years with you than I did in the 12 years I was with him," Benson told him. "You know, that relationship, whatever it was, didn't allow for anything else. But with you, your support, I have a family."

Although it was a sweet farewell for the two, their exchange not received warmly by fans of Benson's former partner, Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni), who left the unit suddenly after season 11. "There was obviously a lack of resolution with Elliot's departure, so every time it comes up, it kind of pulls that scab off," showrunner Warren Leight tells The Hollywood Reporter. "There's nothing you can do or say or write about Elliot that will appease the people who don't understand why his character left."

Leight spoke with THR about the decision behind Amaro's exit, why Amaro didn't die and how fans "absolutely misinterpreted" those remarks.

How and when did you come to the decision for this departure?

It's tricky. It was almost in the wind a year ago. Danny did four years here and seven before this on Cold Case. That's 11 years straight [years] of procedurals, and he lives in LA and has a home there so there was some question about whether he was going to stay last year. Then as the season went on, it became something of a questioning process and then [a] decision of: Where can this character go? Because we've put his character through the ringer and in some ways, he probably went through more changes in four years than the entire cast of Mad Men did in eight years.

I tried to be very careful about making sure when Cragen left and Munch left that there was a sense of closure, so that fans weren't left in the lurch, and Danny felt the same way. We weren't even sure until the last four or five episodes of the season that that's where we were going to go. These things are hard. No one likes separation. In his first episode, he almost put his life on the line to rescue Rollins when he thought she was in trouble. He has that gear that if a woman is in jeopardy, he will fly in front of a bullet to try and save her. That's something that's been in his DNA from early on. I wanted him to go out in character, doing something heroic, and I didn’t want him to die. For a number of reasons, I didn't think that was necessary.

  6. I really want to try Scream but I'm not sure they should be bold enough to compare any part of their show to Friday Night Lights.

  7. Just watched Scream 1 and Scream 2...

  8. I don't get the comparison either.

  9. I think they're just trying to say there's going to be small town teen drama amidst the slasher hijinks.

  10. 24 episodes of Madam Secretary? Are they insane?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I for one enjoy madam secretary a lot so i am happy with this. I think this means they are committed to the 5 seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  12. They're going to make it run for another 4 years with those ratings? o_o

    ReplyDelete
  13. Well it looks like it doesn't? I have no idea of what financial reasons are behind this, but well...

    ReplyDelete
  14. I really don't know. I haven't been in this "world" for a while so I'm not aware of anything about a channel committing to producing 5 seasons for a series.
I mean I thought CBS would order 13 episodes and then just cancel it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oh sorry I didn't mean "committed" as having a contractual obligation or something, I meant more like "adamant"

  16. My goodness. 24 episodes of Madam Secretary. I don't really want to go into politics but we are heading into election year with a former female Secretary of State hoping to get on the ballot.

    Coincidence or not?

  17. I agree, I'm happy for the show! And I'm very confident it will get a season 3, which also means a season 4 and maybe 5.

  18. Joe Morton's character sounds like Command which I hope won't be the case.

  19. I really want to know what CBS is getting from this turkey. Those spring ratings were pathetic.

  20. I know, right?

  21. My guess is upscale viewers.
