12:30 - NCIS - Season 12 Finale - Post-Mortem Interview
The NCIS team has suffered another stunning blow.
In the CBS procedural's season 12 finale, Gibbs (Mark Harmon) joined Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Joanna (Mimi Rogers) in Afghanistan to track down the terrorist group responsible for Ned Dorneget's (Matt Jones) recent death in a Cairo hotel blast. At the end of the episode, Gibbs was shot by Luke (Daniel Zolghadri), a boy he had befriended, and the special agent's fate remained a mystery at the close of the season.
Executive producer Gary Glasberg tells The Hollywood Reporter that the final scene was intentionally filmed in a "frenetic and chaotic manner" to leave the audience "unsettled and unsure of where we're headed" going into next season.

11:45 - Ripper Street - Renewed by Amazon for 2 more seasons
Victorian crime drama “Ripper Street,” which was resurrected by Amazon after it was axed by BBC One in 2013, has been renewed for two additional seasons. Set in London’s Whitechapel shortly after the Jack the Ripper murders, and starring Matthew Macfadyen as Detective Inspector Reid, this will take “Ripper Street” through at least five seasons.
Filming is set to begin immediately, with no confirmed airdate at present for “Ripper Street.”

10:20 - Jane The Virgin - Interview With The Latin Lover Narrator
The narrator has been so influential to the tone of Jane the Virgin, and so much of voice work depends on the tenor of your voice. How did you come to the point of finding just the right tone?
That's a very good question. In terms of the tone, obviously it's a combination of the character voice, which is something I've had in my repertoire anyway — the Latin lover, Antonio Banderas kind of thing. In terms of the actual emotional tone, that was something that started with [director] Brad Silberling in the pilot, but [producer] Gina Lamar and mostly [showrunner] Jennie Urman, who directs most of the voice-over questions, she brought out some of the sarcastic or sassy or playful side of me when it came to the character. I think she kind of shaped him and molded him as we went along with the episodes.
For, say, a burgeoning TV critic who wants to break into the television-narrator scene, what are your most helpful tips for being a good narrator?
I think No. 1, it's always training. Taking scene-study classes — if you're not going to take a full-on theater or acting course, then, at the very least, take a scene study class. Take voice-over classes and take improv classes, all of which I've trained and continue to train in to this day. But secondly, understand that it's never, ever about you. One of the things that they say is that you kind of have to disappear. The less people notice you, the better job you're doing. That's part of the challenge, I think, with this character. He's so sassy and he's so unique that he stands out, which goes against what we're trained to do, so there has to be a little balance in terms of what the intention is. It's about the story and it's about what's going on onscreen with the other actors.

09:30 - MOVIES: Black Panther - Marvel Courting Ava DuVernay to Direct Diverse Superhero Movie
Marvel is courting “Selma” filmmaker Ava DuVernay to direct one of its diverse superhero movies, which include “Black Panther” and “Captain Marvel,” multiple individuals with knowledge of the situation have told TheWrap. Insiders suggest that “Black Panther,” due first in July 2018, is the most likely possibility.
Marvel has had discussions with DuVernay about taking the reins of one of its marquee comic book properties and while the studio is considering other directors, there is mutual interest in having her join the MCU.
Marvel’s courtship surfaces on the same day that the American Civil Liberties Union asked state and federal agencies to investigate Hollywood’s hiring practices at major studios, networks and talent agencies. The ACLU has alleged rampant and intentional gender discrimination in recruiting and hiring female directors.

ReplyDeleteAgreed, I'm hoping Marvel or some other franchise gives her a gig. She is hugely talented and I want to see that expressed on the big screen.

I just hope that this show, by casting me, who lived here in a studio, has done one of three things. No. 1, it's inspired people that don't necessarily speak with a Midwest accent to step up to the mic, and hopefully inspired casting directors to open up their choices in casting as well. No. 2, that it inspires showrunners and show creators to realize there are tons of us out there that can turn things around for them and give them the quality that a celebrity or an on-camera actor can give them, if not more. And No. 3, that people start to realize and respect this as an art and a craft of acting, because it really is."

*sideeyes Marvel soooooo hard* I love their movies but their policy when it comes to women both in front and behind the camera is so shady.
