10:56 - Elizabeth Wilson, Character Actress With Roles in '9 to 5' and 'The Graduate,' Dies at 94
Elizabeth Wilson, a Tony winner and character actress who had memorable supporting roles in films such as The Graduate and 9 to 5, has died. She was 94.
During her nearly seven-decade career, Wilson won a Tony in 1972 for David Rabe's anti-war drama Sticks and Bones. She also was nominated for an Emmy for her role in NBC's 1987 miniseries Nutcracker: Money, Madness and Murder.
One of her most memorable film roles was that of Benjamin Braddock's (Dustin Hoffman) mother in Mike Nichols' 1967 film The Graduate. She went on reunite with Nichols on Catch-22 (1970), The Day of the Dolphin (1973) and Regarding Henry (1991).

We all know how fickle the TV business is — one year you’re up, next year you’re down. After launching the No.2 highest-rated new series of the 2012-13 season among adults 18-49 (Revolution) and the No.1 (The Blacklist) last season, NBC’s freshmen stumbled this season. Only one first-year series, comedic crime drama The Mysteries Of Laura, made it to a second season after an 11th hour reprieve on Friday night. (NBC is yet to make final decisions on late drama entries American Odyssey and AD: The Bible Continues, but neither looks promising.)
This is not your mother’s CBS. Long known for its reliable, often older-skewing procedurals, the network is going younger for next season. A lot younger. On the heels of the success of its action drama Scorpion, the network has picked up three more series targeting the younger set, Supergirl, Limitless and Rush Hour, all toplined by actors in their 20s or early 30s. Yes, the network also ordered a new Criminal Minds spinoff starring 60-year old Gary Sinise and medical drama Code Black starring 55-year-old Marcia Gay Harden, but the generational shift is clear and it also spreads to the comedy side.
NBC will likely be the only broadcast network with an all-multi-camera comedy lineup next fall since the long-time leader in the genre, CBS, has picked up two single-camera series so far, Angel From Hell and Life In Pieces. This is believed to be the first time CBS has ordered only single-camera new comedies.

International weekend estimates are now in from the studios with Avengers: Age Of Ultron‘s offshore box office hitting $562.4M after a $68.3M frame. As the film’s China release looms on May 12, it is holding firm as the No. 1 movie in many overseas territories. But Down Under, the Marvel superheroes faced off with the Barden Bellas this weekend as Pitch Perfect 2 bowed in the top spot in both Australia and New Zealand. Elsewhere, Warner Bros’ Hot Pursuit set off in some smaller markets and Sony’s Chappie hit China for a $9.7M start.

The 2012 soundtrack to Pitch Perfect was a rare gold-cup winner in the sales sweepstakes, thanks in part to the viral success of Anna Kendrick’s "Cups," the flukiest of fluke hits. Now, with a Pitch Perfect 2 album arriving just three days before the movie’s May 15 bow, the challenge for the team behind the sequel’s music is not to clone "Cups," which was "a lightning-in-a-bottle moment that’s really not replicable," as Mike Knobloch, president of film music at Universal Pictures, puts it. It’s to remind people the first soundtrack did fine without that late-breaking hit.
Indeed, there has yet to be a buzzing prerelease tune from Pitch Perfect 2, even though the sequel has something the first one didn’t: an original song. "Flashlight," a "Firework"-style inspirational ballad, is a recurring plot point in the film. It is sung by Jessie J on the soundtrack and Hailee Steinfeld onscreen (rumor has it the actress wowed music executives and has been signed to Republic Records). As a single, the recording has already dropped off the Pop Digital Songs chart, where it debuted at No. 46, since Republic released it in late April (it’s No. 24 on the Billboard-Twitter chart dated May 16). But Bruce Resnikoff, president of Universal Music’s UMe division, says any action at radio would be "a bonus -- an additional bump to what the soundtrack will do." It’s all about the full song score, he insists, saying the Pitch Perfect films are to millennials "what Grease was to a prior generation."
While the marketing behind the film has been aggressive, the pregame push for the soundtrack has been virtually nonexistent. Fans looking for a song lineup for Pitch Perfect 2 on services like iTunes or Amazon have only seen blank spaces, as UMe aims to keep the 18-track lineup under wraps until its actual street date, a level of secrecy not even Taylor Swift strives for. The reasoning: A huge chunk of the film’s biggest laughs come from hearing the first bar or two of a musical cue, whether it’s -- spoilers ahead! -- the Green Bay Packers doing "Bootylicious" or Rebel Wilson’s Fat Amy wooing her ex-boyfriend with a comically melodramatic "We Belong to the Night."

Since Fox’s House ended its run three years ago, ABC veteran Grey’s Anatomy has had the broadcast-TV medical drama field all to itself, with no serious challengers. That may change next season when four new medical dramas, NBC’s Chicago Med and Heartbreaker, CBS’ Code Black and, to some extent, Fox’s Rosewood join the fray.
NBC has been the most aggressive in the arena, picking up both of its medical pilots — the Chicago Fire spinoff Chicago Med and Heartbreaker — as well as renewing The Night Shift for a third season. While Chicago Med is expected to be a Dick Wolf-style procedural, Heartbreaker, like Grey’s, is a soapy drama featuring sexy young surgeons. CBS, which also commissioned two medical drama pilots, Code Black and LFE, has ER-set Code Black starring Marcia Gay Harden, while Fox’s Rosewood is using a crime procedural framework for the lead character, a private pathologist played by Morris Chestnut.
We’ve never had so many superheroes populating broadcast television. After the last couple of seasons successfully introduced DC’s Arrow, The Flash and Batman (via Gotham) as well as Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., we have big new additions, DC’s Supergirl at CBS and superhero team-up Legends Of Tomorrow at the CW, both from Arrow and The Flash‘s Greg Berlanti, as well as DC/Vertigo’c Lucifer at Fox. Add to that Marvel’s Agent Carter, which will return for a second season, Marvel’s superhero series package for Netflix, which kicked off with Daredevil, and DC’s Titans TNT pilot, and we get a very crowded superhero TV universe.

Amell continued, “Now, Constantine was an NBC show. I’m on The CW. I had had discussions with DC… so not NBC, not CW… but with DC Entertainment about guest starring on Constantine when it was still on the air. And that was and is still on the table. So we have Flash, we have Legends of Tomorrow, a new show which is directly connected to the Arrow universe, we have Supergirl… she got picked up, directed by my good friend Glen Winter, that pilot, I can’t wait to see it, I’m sure it’s going to be amazing… there’s Gotham obviously, and I’m missing something… Titans, there you go. So again I wouldn’t worry too much about the movie universe, because we have no shortage of options for me and other characters to populate.”
But what would have led Arrow to appear on Constantine? Amell explained, “The reason that I was going to guest star on Constantine, at least the idea that we were throwing around was he’s an expert when it comes to the Lazarus Pit, which is now something that is a part of and will continue to be a part of Arrow.”
Amell also went on to voice his support for Constantine returning on another network.

19:45 - Joe Henderson To Run Fox Drama ‘Lucifer’

White Collar co-executive producer Joe Henderson has joined the newly picked up Fox drama series Lucifer as executive producer/showrunner.
Lucifer, from Warner Bros. TV, DC Comics and Jerry Bruckheimer Television, was written by Californication creator Tom Kapinos, who also had a CW pilot and is not very involved in the Fox drama. He will remain an executive producer on the series but won’t have hands-on involvement as showrunner.
Henderson and Kapinos executive produce the project, based on the characters from DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint, with the pilot’s director, Len Wiseman, Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman and Ildy Modrovich.
