The Originals - City Beneath the Sea - Review

2 May 2015

We’re almost at the end of the season. This week, Dahlia won Klaus to her side. Elijah, Rebekah, Cami, Davina and Freya all tried to find a way to defeat Dahlia. Meanwhile Hayley and Jackson are on the run with Hope. Josh said goodbye to Aiden. Dahlia makes her move.

Character that is too precious fort his world: Oh poor Josh, I just want to wrap a blanket around this guy and tell him it’s all going to be okay. He just can’t catch a break. All he wanted was to have some fun in New Orleans with someone he thought was his friend. Then he got turned into a vampire, stabbed in the back by that fake-friend and pushed around so much I’ve lost count. Then when he finally finds happiness with Aiden, it gets taken away from him again. Both him and Aiden were just pawns in someone else’s war. I hope we get some more scenes with him and Davina soon, they’re kind of kindred spirits now, having both lost someone (or in Davina’s case, two someone’s) they love. I’m so glad he got to go to Aiden’s funeral. The werewolves even seemed to accept Josh by the end of it. Let’s hope he doesn’t actually end up leaving town.
Most interesting backstory: So I had been anxiously awaiting Dahlia’s backstory to see how she became the way that she is. But I still don’t quite get it. When Dahlia and Esther were taken by the Vikings, Dahlia focused on her magic so that she could free herself, while Esther decided to make the best of a bad situation. Both of those things are okay. What doesn’t sit well with me is how Dahlia refused to accept Esther’s decision. Sisters don’t have to stay together for the rest of their lives. All Esther wanted was a normal life away from magic. She didn’t choose this to hurt Dahlia. Of course that’s not how she saw it, she took it as a personal betrayal. I can understand that the firstborn witch in that generation would be extremely powerful and dangerous. But Dahlia could’ve chosen to help guide both Freya and Hope without trying to take them away from their families. She says she cares, but if she really did she’d never try to take a child away from her mother.

Missed opportunity: I think many will agree with me when I say, seeing Klaus daggered was oddly satisfying. I hate that the writers chose this moment to do it though. The timing was awful. He was daggered for maybe a day. Considering how many times he’s done this to his siblings, I’d really wish he’d get to stay daggered for a few centuries or so. Of course that would never work for the show (unless they did a century long time jump). Storyline I’m very excited about: So we haven’t seen much of Davina since Kol died. She’s been very focused on bringing him back. But it seems she might be getting a storyline soon. If she becomes the leader of all 9 witch covens, she would get a whole lot of power. That would also mean we’d get to see a lot more of the witch community. I, for one, am all for it.

Least favorite character: So this is the part some of you might hate me for, Klaus. I don’t know what it is this past half-season, but he’s been spiraling. Becoming more and more paranoid. I remember thinking just this past winter, that Klaus was becoming one of my favorites on the show. But in this second half of the season, his behavior has been getting more and more erratic. I think there are two things that have brought this on. Jackson and Freya. Now Klaus didn’t really have a problem with Jackson before the wedding, mainly because I think he didn’t see him as a threat. But as the wedding neared, he started to feel more and more threatened by him. The thought that Hope might grow up to call Jackson daddy scares the hell out of him. After the wedding, the wolves got all this new power and Klaus realized he no longer had a hold over them. Then came Freya, who reminded Klaus of himself. And yet, his siblings seemed to side with her over him. Which only fueled Klaus’ paranoia. Now we all know that control is very important to Klaus. So I believe that all of his actions lately have been to regain the control he feels he’s lost. This week that behavior reached its boiling point. I wanted to give him a head-slap Gibbs-style for siding with Dahlia. What the hell is he thinking? He must know that the minute that Hope is old enough, Dahlia will tell her that Klaus killed her mother, Hope will hate him and Dahlia will have her all to herself. He said he’s never cared for Hayley but he’s proven the past year that that is not the case. But even if what he said was true, how could he do that to Hope. How can you take your own child’s mother away. Considering how paranoid Klaus has been lately, I can’t believe he’d side with the least trustworthy person on this show. I hope he’s playing her, because that would be great character progress for him. To still help his family even after they’ve seemingly given up on him.
Character that needs to be discussed but that I can’t find a good title for: I’ve had mixed feelings about Elijah this season. One week I love him, the next I’m not so sure. Same happened this week. I’m surprised at how quickly he believed Cami about Klaus’ innocence. I’m not sure who this had more to do with: Klaus or Cami. I understand why he wanted to keep Klaus daggered, but I can’t believe no one considered the idea of Dahlia getting in Klaus’ head. I feel like Elijah was the decision maker this week. He started to see Klaus’ point when it comes to Freya, but rather kill her or kick her out, he found middle ground. Freya wanted to use Hope as bait, but instead Elijah decided to use her. If Freya was so sure that Hope wouldn’t have come to any harm, the same should be said for her. He didn’t run after Hayley and Hope (yet). Both he and Rebekah were able to understand Hayley’s side of things, as much as it hurt them. They know all too well how much danger their family brings. Can you imagine your child’s life being in danger (and having been so since the day she was born) all because of her father’s family, and not being able to do a single thing about it except for try to escape it. But we all know from the promo that she won’t get far. I’m curious to see which sides the Original siblings will end up choosing (mainly referring to Klaus and Freya here).

What will the writers do?: So Rebekah is about to be untied to the witches. Davina is getting closer to bringing Kol back, most likely by the end of the season. So her promise to her brother will be fulfilled. So what then? Rebekah will no longer have an excuse to remain in Eva’s body. So will the writers make up another one or will Claire come back? I recently started watching ‘H2O: Just Add Water’ and realized just how much I miss her as Rebekah. So I’m definitely hoping for the latter.

Best song: 'Matches' by Letts (played during Aiden's funeral)
Best quotes: Hayley: “Why would he take the blame? Because he’s stubborn and irresponsible on top of being a bloodthirsty, murdering lunatic.”
Josh: “I never thought much about the whole immortality part of being a vampire. Suddenly, forever feels like a really long time.”

So that’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.

When I started writing this I didn't think I'd have much to say this week, and then I ended up writing my longest review ever. And yes, I put 2 Josh pictures in there. Poor thing needed some extra love.

  2. You recently started watching H20? wait until Clairel unexpectedly leaves the show (she does, she doesen`t seem to like being tied down to a show)

  3. If Klaus is not playing Dahlia, it would be a weird change for Klaus. But the witches do seem decimated so idk. On the subject of Josh, he's been to neglected for me to care about him much. It seems like Claire's exit was her decision so I doubt she is coming back at all. Kol seems like a definate return though.

It's always satisfying seeing Klaus get taken down a notch, if only because the originals have a bit roo much power and especially that had never been daggered.

I am still waiting fir Freya to go darkside.

  4. Mac what do you have against Claire deciding she's had enough of playing Rebekah or wanting to move on to a better network then the CW or do movies exactly ?
Let say for a second you got a job on The Originals as a assistant to one of the producers/directors and after two season you get offered a job ( since they know of your love of film making and have seen your short films shot during your time working there ) filming a Buffy movie staring SMG and the entire cast ... are you going to turn it down or feel like you have to remain on The Originals for the rest of your career just because they gave you your start in the biz or are you going to move on to bigger and better (and higher paying) projects that continue to challenge your growth as a artist ?

  5. you know me, I'm about loyality to your work. It's more of a thing I have than a problem with her decision, I can't watch anything featuring David Caruso anymore for what he did to NYPD Blue either. If you're not loyal to a character and think you're above something you created you don't have much value to me as an artist.

As for that hypothetical question, I'd choose TO over Buffy. Now, you've know me for long enough to know that Buffy is my everything but I for the life of me could not leave something hanging without major emotional withdrawls. I just couldn't.

I respect her decision to grow as an actress but what happened there BTS wise is just too iffy for me. First she proclaims the plan was to never have Rebekah on for longer (what clearly wasn't true given the quick recast), the proclaims to just need some time with her family only to return a week later for Aquarius (wich clearly was the reason she left, what they told the press just made it sound nicer than "She left because Aquarius pays better and gives her more exposure").

I adore Claire, I don't adore her decision. And yeah....I'm a scorned fan in that way.

  6. I liked this episode. I like Elijah in every story. Dahlia story was interesting but I still don't trust her just like I don't trust Freya. I thought it was smart when Elijah used Hopes blood and put it in Freya. I was hoping that Elijah would kick Jackson ass its like when he is with Haley he acts so innocent but when he is not around he acts different and he has no right that he can see Hope he is related to her not Jackson. Being a Elijah and Haley fan when she said goodbye I thought she was going to say I love you and I cant believe that creep Jackson made her choose its like she listens to everything that he has to say there is a part of me that does not trust him either. I can understand where Haley is coming from and wants to protect Hope but Klaus is the father and nothing is going to change that. And I always like the friendship between Cami and Elijah and I like that he knows but I think he knows for awhile how Cami feels for Klaus and he knows that Klaus did not do it. Is Kol coming back. Klaus is not happy. Now I am not a Klaus and Haley fan but I don't think he will kill her. And this promo is freaking me out I just don't want anything to happen to Elijah Everyone is saying Haley is going to die but have a feeling its Gia and I like her

  7. Who knows with Klaus character

  8. I think she left to be in a movie. I thought it was a cute show and Phoebe's acting wasn't as bad as it is on TO and she had decent chemistry with her love interest (which is something she really lacks on this show).

  9. I'm the opposite. I'm really rooting for Dahlia. I hope she does kill Hayley, but TVD is always unwilling to kill off anyone so I'm sure this will be the exact same way.

I don't think Klaus has always been paranoid. I think he became that way over centuries because of various events/betrayals in his life. He's obviously not wrong about Freya or about Jackson trying to take his daughter away from him - so his paranoia I think is well justified. It's not as if he's seeing threats that don't exist.

  10. Kol isn't coming back. Nate pretty much confirmed that on instagram yesterday.

  11. I always assumed that version of Kol was never coming in any shape or form.

  12. But they can't write for the wolves/Hayley to save their lives, they must be somewhat aware of that by now. I don't think Jackson fits into the category of a character they won't kill, though everyone they have killed this season has meant nothing to me.

  13. sorry i forgot, when did they say that Rebekah's doing to be unbound from Davina and the other kids?

This type of logic is nuttly. I get it, we all become attached to actors who play a certain character, but actors are people too, and career advancement is a natural progression in the work place. If I was working at CW and was able to score a role on NBC, you bet your bottom dollar I would take the role on NBC - as there is more exposure as an actor, and you get paid more. NBC has a larger budget then CW.

Actors are not slaves to their characters, they too are people....

    Just saying....

As well, female actors have a harder time in Hollywood - they don't get paid as much as male actors - whether it be movies or TV.

So Claire had to do what was best for her economically and professionally. I can't blame her for it.

Dunno, but I think TPTB refocused the show on Hayley AFTER Claire decided that she was going to leave the show. The show most likely knew at the onset of the series that Claire had other plans. Hayley is one of the only lead females on the show - able to stand up to the main characters.

My hypothesis is that Hayley was supposed to have left with Hope, and TPTB had to change the scenario as there were not enough females on the show. Lead females, that is. This is why at the end of season one it kinda didn't make sense that Hayley grew up in a war zone and was given away by her family..that she would end up doing the same with her daughter ...rather then just leaving and taking her daughter with her.

I thought the episode this week was seriously boring, and amounted to filler in my opinion. I was literally thinking who cares about Dahlia and her perspective as to why she hates her sister....I found it annoying that the show spends sooo much time on Dahlia and Klaus and literally ignores the fact that both sisters are alive and clearly have things to resolve with one another....Esther and Dahlia should be in the same room with one another and it kills me that the show spends sooo much time on Klaus and Dahlia....in my opinion No One Cares.

The shows plot was not advanced this week, and was somewhat boring. Someone needs to light a fire under TPTB -cause they are in the danger zone of being down right irrelevant.

    I thought Freya killed Esther?

I always found it weird that she'd sign on to a new show and leave after less than a season. I guess you're theory makes more sense.

  21. No. She killed Lenore. We haven't seen Esther's real body since TVD (when Alaric killed her at the end of Season 3).

  22. But Rebekah never had a storyline to being with. She was just takced on to Marcel's storyline. Rebekah nor Elijah really had any sort of indepenent storyline in Season 1.

I think the show was created around Phoebe/Hayley. Phoebe was the first person cast for the show, before Joseph, Daniel or Claire even.

  23. The writers can have great story lines at times but they are the real problem. The plot was in when season 4 TVD started that the Originals were leaving. So they killed off Finn by the hands of a human and the cure experiment led to Kol death by a baby vamp and hunter and kept Klaus, Rebekah and Elijah for the tv show. Now it has back fired from season 1 finale into season 3 with the replacements of their siblings as witches now was a waste of time. Vincent and Kaleb should have not been Kol and Finn. Rebekah should've been daggered cause maisie line at this min is useless, rumors now she's leaving. Mikael was great for the show as a rival to Klaus. Esther's arrival was cool because she's a witch. All this became the body swapping failure. My problem again if davina bring back Kol now that Nate no longer available will be a set back to me. The writers and staff are not listening to us. Please stop killing off the Mikaelson's who we really like I say dagger them.

  24. But she was a vamp. Would she even go back to her "real body" ?
