The Originals - Ashes to Ashes - Review

This episode concludes the second season of ‘The Originals’. Dahlia has finally been defeated by the Original siblings with the help of Esther. Davina is furious at the for ruining her chance to bring Kol back. Cami admits that she has feelings for Klaus. Klaus and Elijah are at odds. Hayley is still trapped under the curse. Rebekah was briefly back into her own body to help out before returning to Eva’s body. She left town to try and find a way to bring Kol back, but not before reuniting with Marcel.

Best return: I’ve missed Claire so much. Maisie did a great job these past few months but I realized this week that there was a boldness missing. Not sure if that was intentional or not, Rebekah could have toned it down being in a mortal body. As sad as I am that her return was only for this episode, at this point I guess it’s the best solution. Both Claire and Maisie have new shows so I guess we won’t be seeing much of Rebekah any time soon. It’s a shame because, at this point, Rebekah is kind of the glue that holds the family together. With her gone, I doubt Freya will be enough to keep the peace between Elijah and Klaus. Klaus really did go easiest on Rebekah. I half expected him to dagger her at the end of the episode. It’s sad that we won’t get to explore their relationship further, because they’ve always been my favorite family dynamic.

Unexpected turn of events: There were a lot of parallels in between this episode and last season’s finale. More on that later. What surprised me was how my opinion of Elijah and Klaus has changed. Last season, Elijah blamed Klaus for Hayley’s death. At the time, I was seriously pissed at Elijah, because in my opinion this wasn’t Klaus’ fault. I also felt that yelling at him while searching for his newborn daughter who was about to be killed may not have been the best timing. This year however, we’re in a very similar situation. Instead of Hayley, it’s Gia who’s dead and Hope is in as much danger as she was last season. This year however, Elijah was 100% justified. I’ve always thought that Elijah has been too forgiving of Klaus in the past, with everything Klaus has done to their siblings. Now it’s clear Elijah will not forgive this so easily. I believe the rift between the two brothers will be a major aspect of season 3. Personally, I hope Klaus finally takes some responsibility for his actions.

Best sacrifice: Last week I said I didn’t get how Esther could be the one brought back from the dead rather than Kol. Boy, did the writers show me. At first I was mad, because I really want Nate back as Kol. And I’m very interested to see how his new relationship with Davina will develop. But after seeing the confrontation scene between Dahlia and Esther, I’m glad the writers chose this path instead. I never realized how much I needed to see Alice Evans as Esther again. I’m assuming this is the last we’ll ever see of Esther and I’m okay with that. I think this was the perfect ending to her character. When we first met her on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ she was trying to kill her children, now she died saving them. I would’ve liked to know what changed for her, or if she would’ve never been able to go through with it.

Best parallel: This season started with Rebekah telling Hope a bedtime story. It ended with Klaus doing the exact same thing. I never realized that that would be the perfect way to end the season. If you only look at those two scenes, you’d think that all that has changed is that Hope has gotten bigger. But so much has changed in between. The season started out with the Original siblings united and trying to find a way to bring Hope home. Now she’s home, but the unity between the siblings is no more.
Storyline that needs to be resolved ASAP: We saw very little of Hayley this week, but what we did see is that she’s absolutely miserable. She looks broken and it’s only been what? A day. When she’s freed from this curse, this is going to have some serious psychological consequences. Cami better clear her schedule.

Best quotesRebekah: "In case the analogy is lost on you, I believe my brother is calling you a hypocritical bitch."
Freya: "Well, my adage holds. Nothing good ever happens in a clearing in the woods."
Esther: "Let me share with you the glorious freedom that I have found... in death."

Season 3: So as for season 3, here are some of my predictions. Davina is going to retaliate. The Original siblings ruined her one chance of bringing Kol back, she’s not going to let this slide. My guess is that they’ll probably build up to this and save the actual ‘war’ for the second half of the season. Maybe by then Rebekah will have found a way to bring Kol back. Freya will hopefully find a way to release Hayley from the curse. Klaus and Elijah will be at odds, that may be an understatement. I read that the first vampire ever sired by the Mikaelsons will appear next season. Now this I find very interesting. There are certain things I’ve been curious about. For instance: who was the first one to turn someone? How did they figure out how to do it? Or was it an accident? So many questions! Hopefully I’ll get some answers next season.

That’s it for season 2 of ‘The Originals’. It’s going to be a long wait for season 3, which will air on a new night: Thursdays instead of Mondays. Hopefully you’ll remember to check back here in October. Until then, let me know in the comments what you thought of the finale.
