"It's hard to make friends as an adult woman," said Kaling. "In L.A., the only people you meet are women in your spin class. You wonder what the motivations are, but you're so desperate for friends!"
Mindy Kaling is excited about her show's new home at Hulu.
"My TV show, which is the love of my life, has been through a lot of changes. … It's like being in a really rocky relationship — it's been more dramatic than any love life has been, this show that's about romance and dating." the Mindy Project creator and star excitedly reflected while previewing her upcoming book,Why Not Me? at BookCon on Saturday morning at New York City's Javits Center. "The writers' room is starting up on Monday!"
One major focus of the upcoming fourth season will be female friendship, since her character Mindy Lahiri doesn't have many of them. "It's hard to make friends as an adult woman. … In L.A., the only people you meet are women in your spin class. And you have to wonder, if a woman seeks you out at spin class, you wonder what the motivations are! But you're so desperate for friends. … It's much harder to find someone you want to talk to than a man you want to sleep with."
When a fan asked what Kaling has learned from her onscreen alter ego, the actress and author said, "She's so much smarter than me in some ways — she's a surgeon, and OB/GYN … but in some other ways, she's just a narcissistic, crazy, 25-year-old woman. Those two dials, I feel like a lot of us have those."

hey if we cut out the shameless self-hailing as well the show might be worth watching again.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, I tried, I tried to watch through 1 and 2 but...it's just oh-so clearly braggadocious.
You know...Seinfeld was the same in that premise but what Kahling doesn't get is the fact that Seinfelds characters NEVER came out on top, in fact they lost everytime due to being so self-centered.
Sorry Mindy Project fans, just needed to get that off my chest, had to sit through s 1/2 in the last 4 days and I feel like I finally know what kind of person to avoid
The Mindy project is easily one of the top 3 comedies out there! Love the show and so excited it got renewed by Hulu for a 4th season!
ReplyDeleteYeah if you ignore how all the supporting characters are ignored and you just know mindys new friend will be forget in a few episodes since mindy only likes to write about herself and Danny.
ReplyDeleteI disagree but that's your own opinion.
ReplyDeleteThis panel was great. Mindy and B.J. are adorable and hilarious.
ReplyDeleteShe did say the writers are meeting Monday to discuss details about Season 4, including getting a female best friend for Min.
I wish she had spoken more about the show, but the panel was about her upcoming book which does apparently feature a lot of details about the show. SO EXCITED TO READ IT.
A lot of the show is in fact about the two of them and how their relationship developed over the course of the show. I agree that some characters are side stepped, but that's okay in this case. Morgan, Jeremy, Beverly, Tamra and Peter are the supporting characters who matter and I believe they get good enough arcs which are funny and make me really enjoy their on screen presence. Do I wish they had more story lines? Sure. But I def don't think they get less time. It's probably just enough to want more but not so less that I will complain.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad HULU gave it a new life :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm laughing on this...Isn't she the one who cut all the females characters on her show just to get all the other men around her?Mindy Kaling is a unfunny joke.
ReplyDeleteShe written off all female characters just to center only on her.
ReplyDeleteShe plays a 25 year old in the show? Really?
ReplyDeletedon't you see how young and QUUUIIIIIRRRRKY she is? Shurrs da purrrfect gurrrrlllllll ;)
ReplyDeleteI mean it doesn't make sense, how can she have done her residency and still be 25? Either the article has the age wrong or miss Kaling doesn't want to appear "old" on TV so she doesn't care that the age doesn't fit with the character.
ReplyDeleteUmm...you realize that the three female characters you are referring to left the show, two of their own free will from the first season and the third, I think Betsy (?) was cut due to financial pressures from the network. All situations that Kaling could not prevent...
ReplyDeleteI hope they get a great actress for this. I am just so thrilled the show will be back, it is for sure one of my absolutely favorite comedies.
ReplyDeleteHear hear, one of the best comedies around!
ReplyDeleteSo why just regular women castmembers left the show and not the men?
ReplyDeleteShe used to have so many fun friends on the show before what happened to all them. I get that some of the actresses have gone on to do more roles but I can't believe that of all the various chicks Mindy was friends with over the first two season that not any of them can come back. I used to like seeing Mindy with her college friends and her female friends. It's one of the things that made me a little frustrated about the last season which had a few issues. Mindy went from miss fun social to what the hell happened to all her girl friends why does she only ever to seem to hang out with either Danny or one of her coworkers?
ReplyDelete"self-hailing" you say? actually, that's the main premise of this comedy series, haha. well, you do have a choice, if you don't like it, then you're free to go.
ReplyDeleteIt's a joke within the show, that Mindy lies about her age and tells people she's only 25. There's an ep where Danny talks about how serious their relationship has become and he jokes that she actually admitted that she's 30-whatever (I can't remember the exact number).
ReplyDeleteAs the two female friends left of their own accord, you would have to ask them. However, I believe that both of them chose to go to other show opportunities. Betsy's character is the only cast member that was cut. I believe it probably had less to do with her being a female versus the fact that her character part was small (remember it was always a small part) and that other actors, including Tamara, had emerged as bigger characters.
