Mindy Project ended its third season with a cliffhanger in March, with Kaling telling THR that she refuses to "create under the assumption of failure" and had preliminary talks with Universal Television's Bela Bajaria about where the series would go in a potential fourth season.
"I just think there are more stories," Kaling told THR about jumping networks should Fox opt out. "I do think there’s more to tell, and I think fans would be disappointed not to see more adventures with these characters. But I came from a show [The Office] that I was on for eight seasons, and it continued for another year after that, so I am accustomed to long runs of television shows. I would be up for that challenge."

The Mindy Project always felt like a show that would be better suited for a digital platform with its small but devoted following. After three seasons on broadcast, the offbeat comedy may take the leap to VOD with a deal at Hulu. I hear the streaming service is in talks for a two-season pickup for the series created by and starring Mindy Kaling. I hear that Fox has informed the Mindy Project team that it would not be picking up a fourth season though the network would not confirm that.

ReplyDeleteNBC universal will make it happen. It is 1 season away from syndication. If not Hulu, they'll put it somewhere, even Syfy (a channel they own) to ensure it happens.

Am I the only one slightly surprised NBC isn't interested. Not only do they own Mindy but their comedy line-up lacks a "face." For years that was the "Friends", Tina Fey, Steve Carrell, Amy Poehler, etc. Mindy Kaling could have been that much needed piece. Not to mention, it's not like they have a bunch of comedy hits on roster.

ReplyDeleteBeing only 22 aways from syndication made NBC Universal so set on finding it another home and it will get it, even if they have to stick it in any of their owned channels.
If the show is owned by the same broadcaster it will get renewed for 4th season no matter what. If it is owned by another company (like Mindy) it will live somewhere else

Dammit I didn't even get to see them have their baby! If they had ended it with a well rounded note and a good ending for everyone I could be less sad but I want to see an adorable Mindy/Danny baby be born. I want to see Danny as a dad and Mindy as an awkward new mom. Why Fox why. Ugh. I hope somebody else picks it up at least to give it a few concluding episodes to round out the storyline at the very least.

Do you know I absolutely hate fox more than any network....I loved Mindy, it was my favourite show! They did it to surviving jack last year and now this! I hate to see mindy and cancelled together as the show is one of my favorite comedies, but in a way, this move might not be bad for the show and it will probably give it more episode than the 22 burn-off ones it would have gotten on FOX Fridays. So, fine, I guess?
Objective reaction: I am somehow surprised with this. I hadn't discounted the possibility of this happening but I had presumed that NBC and FOX would be able to work out a licensee fee low enough that would make FOX accept it as burn off on Fridays Winter or Spring, Glee style. I don't necessarily think this puts into question the idea that a show 5-25 episodes away from 88 episodes will be renewed, but clearly the studio where it comes from matters more than we thought in terms of determining where will that renewal take place.
The show that gets in most trouble for this is actually Brooklyn Nine-Nine. FOX's negotiations with NBCU probably didn't end well if this is the final outcome, and not only does this mean that we won't have a guaranteed 4th season of B99 on FOX, but it could also mean that FOX is going to do strange things with it, like giving it a shorter season next year to timeshare with LMOE which could put a 4th season elsewhere in jeopardy.

For the record, I think there have been worse cases than this one that people systematically overlook due to convenience (myself included for the most part). The following shows were all cancelled while being less than a season away from 88:

ReplyDelete22 episodes and B99 will be a sure thing elsewhere just like Mindy; less than 22 episodes could be trouble as it would give NBCU less incentive to find it another home.
But so far B99 is in no Mindy territory since it rates on par with the Sunday lineup; it may not rate as high as The Simpsons when it brokes 3s or higher, but it usually gets good retention and with a couple of flukes (airing against events and last week showing) the show fares well enough to be renewed despite being owned by NBCU and not FOX

ReplyDeleteI agree but i dont think holding the show is such an unlikely thing. Fox will have 4 male skewing comedies next year: grandpa, grinder, lmoe and bordertown. While a timeshare of lmoe and bordertown (both of which are limited) is an elegant solution, it forces them to leave the sophmore lmoe for midseason. B99 could be useful as spackle to cover a hole caused by one of these comedies failing.

ReplyDeleteIf I'm not mistaken, I believe FOX was saying that The Mindy Project was renewed for a third season because it brought in he higher income, female demographic. Well, I guess that audience was no longer needed. In my opinion, The Mindy Project didn't do any worse than it did last season. That is why additional episodes were picked up this year. FOX should have just gotten rid of it last year and kept Dads.
