The Messengers - Path to Paradise - Advance Preview
May 1, 2015
Reviews The Messengers WMThe Messengers is not a break out hit ratings wise. I'll just state the obvious because I know we are all thinking it. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't enjoy it. Especially now that after last week's episode, Strange Magic, we have an idea about all the potential the show has. God has given these people these gifts as a test. If they can work together and save mankind from The Devil, the Four Horseman and the seals of the Apocalypse, then maybe the mankind is worth saving. Though the trouble now is, where do they start and how do they just get to carrying on saving mankind when they can't even save themselves? Last week, Joshua had a vision of the Horseman of War and the team is now set to find the Horseman and stop them. Trouble is, they have no idea who the Horseman is, or where he is, because Joshua's visions don't quite work like that.
Raul Garcia, He's all for saving mankind, but there's something he's gotta do. Last week, it was Vera's turn to get a bit of her past and this week Raul comes to the forefront while we still get peeks into Vera's past. Raul's story with his niece was easily my least favorite story introduced, but I do like his flashbacks. We get to see glimpses of the feelings that Raul had for his brother's wife, which may be why Nadia hates him so much. We also see how exactly he got into the federal agent biz while in present day he searches for his lost brother after he drops Nadia off with Erin. Cue the awkwardness of Erin trying to explain her relationship with Raul. (Also awkward, how willing Erin is to leave her child alone with a teenager thats practically a stranger).
Vera is still not enjoying the fact that she has been dropped into an episode of Touched by an Angel and she wants out, even though Joshua thinks she should stay, not stray. Vera makes her choice, which shouldn't be that hard to predict and is unaware that she is being watched as she leaves The Last Supper diner. Vera just wants to walk away from Houston and all the trouble it has caused, but Alan shows up with that rock from the crash site and tells Vera he set an appointment with some famous professor in Houston to get it looked at. That Professor shares a history with Vera. (I'm sure you can guess how)The rock storyline is weird, but it does bring us Vera's gift, and I was really surprised at it. I wasn't expecting it based on what they showed in previews.
The Man just keeps getting better and better; he's so creepy as he sulks around managing to stay ahead of the messengers as they search for the Horseman of War. The team is scrambling around trying to piece together who exactly the Horseman is based on the flashes from Joshua's vision; a task that proves difficult without Raul and his gift. The question of who the Horseman is, isn't the only question this week. Is one of their own a Judas? You'll have to tune in and find out.
Why You Should Watch: Looks like the show has finally found it's footing. The hour flies by and once again we get more questions than answers. That's okay though because it seems to be what is going to drive the story. The fact that there are so many different layers of story make it pretty easy to find yourself engrossed in at least one or two of them. I like that they are going back and taking the time to show us more about the characters so we can sympathize with them. This week it's Raul and it looks like Episode 4, Drums of War will be about Peter. The bottom line is, The Messengers just feels like it has jumped leaps and bounds ahead of where it was in the pilot, and if there were any doubts about where the show was going after the exposition heavy Strange Magic, this week's episode Path to Paradise should start to clear things up a bit.
Path to Paradise airs Friday May 1st at 9pm EST on the CW.
Are you liking the show thus far? Do you plan on sticking with it? Are you bummed with the ratings? Sound Off Below!
Thanks for the great preview! One of the shows I look forward to most every week, and I intend to enjoy it while it lasts, although I'm still praying it gets a pickup for summer 2016. I like Raul the most probably, but so far his story has been one of my least faves, but seems like we'll be getting lots of interesting info on him.
ReplyDeleteI'm really enjoying it so far, and your review for tomorrow's episode has me quite excited. Still I'm worried of getting a bit too attached... because if the ratings last week are any indication, I really shouldn't. I'll still watch though, just don't want to be heartbroken when the cancellation hits.
ReplyDeletesame here
ReplyDeleteone of them a JUDAS?! NOOO!!!!!!! so is there feelings shown in that scene between Raul and Erin before he leaves to do what he has to do?
ReplyDeleteGreat read once again Winston, made me looking forward to the episode even more. Can't wait for the new episode.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving the Erin and Raul chemistry and storyline. The niece (Nadia) storyline is something I didn't like in the prior episode...I just think she is unnecessary, but it is what it is. Were there at least some Erin and Raul moments???
ReplyDeleteBut the ratings in the key demo went up to 0.4 in the second episode. First episode got a 0.3. So there is at least a ratings increase happening. If it gets 0.5, for a Friday, that would be more than good enough.
ReplyDeleteI believe those were the numbers with the preemptions. The final adjusted ratings showed it hit a 0.2 and had less than a million in total viewers. That's not good, period.
ReplyDeleteEspecially with Avengers released in US today. I would love a 0,3 but who knows.
ReplyDeleteI liked Raul & Erin but they give me the feeling of "omg we met 5 minutes ago and are so in love" which is not bad but I roll my eyes in most of their scenes hah but please tell me she doesn't leave her daughter with that girl, how stupid can she be? I do like all of them but Vera is my favourite so I am very curious to see what her powers are :) Just a quick question tho, they said that they can use their powers for good or evil but the only one I can see using their powers for evil is Peter and maybe Raul but the Erin and Joshua can't really do anything evil with their powers or are these "early" stages of their powers and they can actually do more with them? Idk but thanks for the preview, got me hyped for the episode without spoiling it too much :)
ReplyDeleteOh wow! I didn't realize it adjusted DOWN that much! Oh well....I feel like CW signed it's cancellation by moving it to Fridays late in April. They let Zombie premiere on a regular night. I love The Messengers way more than the Zombie show. And I feel like CW didn't even want to give The Messengers a try. I'll still enjoy the 13 episodes a whole lot. I figured it would be a 13 episode series anyway when I heard it was moving to Fridays....
ReplyDeleteThere was no "we're in instant love" feeling with them. They had an instant attraction when they saw each other at a store. That happens in real life. You see someone that you find very attractive and you notice them. That's realistic.
ReplyDeleteI know that, but in MY opinion that is the feeling I am getting with those two.
ReplyDeleteVera is my favorite as well. I kind of like the weird bond that Raul and Erin have, and hope it does turn into something more.
ReplyDeleteAs for the powers, that is an interesting question! I don't know the answer to it though, but it would be cool to see if someone does go evil. I think as time goes on they will probably develop their powers.
There really weren't any Erin and Raul moments this week! More so Erin and Nadia(Who isn't as annoying this week) I agree that Erin and Raul have really good chemistry.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteI really loved this episode. not much actually happened as far as "ACTION" but it was a nice character driven episode and there's some moments of bonding between the characters that is really great!
That scene is pretty much all there is. Nothing more or less aside from the glances. Though maybe next week Raul might need a shoulder for some comfort after this week and Erin's shoulder is looking mighty good. Hope they make it happen soon.
ReplyDeleteI know. I've went from mildly interested to almost invested and though I know the future is bleak for the show, I kinda hope there is some chance for a second summer season.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I don't see the Avengers helping matters when it comes down to tonight's ratings. :(
ReplyDeleteThanks for Reading!
ReplyDeleteLet's form a prayer circle for that pickup!
Yeah, this week was a big episode for Raul, so if you were already like him, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
I like character driven stuff! It makes me love the characters and dig the story more. ^_^
ReplyDeleteMaybe. I secretly hope they shuffle it to thursdays with BATB this summer. it's not much of a lead in, but it'd be a pretty good genre night.
ReplyDeleteMe Either. I don't realize that both ABC and NBC had thursday summer lineups!
ReplyDeleteStill, I think The Messengers deserves a move this summer, especially if they plan on airing out the whole series.
Hmm. Maybe you have the gift of intuition???? Idk, I won't say what it is though!
ReplyDeleteMe too! I think that's why I initially felt so disconnected from the pilot because they didn't mine the characters to my liking, but I really loved how 2 & 3 have developed these characters so far.
ReplyDeleteLOL that'd be cool, i guess i'll see tonight, at first i actually thought it was Phasing but then in the Producer's Preview i saw her passed out again and wake up and it reminded me of Prue in Charmed
ReplyDeleteI will mention...tonights episode ends on a rather....arresting development.
ReplyDelete"rimshot" LOL
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the producer's preview! So I didn't know what they showed. (no pint when you've seen the whole thing you know?)
ReplyDeletePrue in charmed, eh? Well.....you're (SPOILER)....
Me too. They have a natural chemistry.
ReplyDeleteRaul will find himself in the sight of The Man this week, so be afraid. Be Very Afraid.
I know U also got number 4, have U already seen it or waiting after 3 airs?
ReplyDeleteI'm waiting. I may watch it tonight, if not then I'll see it tomorrow, so I can post the preview over the weekend.
ReplyDeleteThumbs up for U will power to not watch all 4 in a row. But I understand U want to be objective on the single episode while preview/reviewing it.
ReplyDeleteLook forward for the next read.
Oh yeah... that's gonna hurt...
ReplyDeleteI think they night the +7 ratings into account for this one... at least I hope they do...
ReplyDeleteAnd I hope the +7 are actually good...
Big time.
ReplyDeleteJust today I saw a bunch of people write on TVlines what to watch article that they gone DVR it so I assume people possibly could like it and watch later.
ReplyDeleteWell as of now I'm still liking iZombie more but I'm in no way putting myself in a situation where I have to pick which one the two I'd rather go to the chopping block. I want them both to stick around.
ReplyDeleteI still very strongly think TM would have been a great companion with SPN and I'm hoping that they might pair it with SPN reruns this summer... I doubt it, but it would be nice...
I think depending on how the new slate of pilots pans out and if MP wants to keep an active summer schedule, and if the DVR numbers hold up, there might be a chance for a summer slot.
ReplyDeleteReally small change if it keeps the 0.2 and doesn't hit at least a million in total viewers though...
Fingers crossed the DVR numbers give it a good boost.
ReplyDeleteWith their love ratings a +150-200 can happen, overly enthusiastic.
ReplyDeleteLOL
