The Big Bang Theory - The Commitment Determination - Review

May 8, 2015

All pictures below were taken from SpoilerTV, CBS, and Warner Brothers (WB). I give credit to all of their hard work.

Shamy & Penny/Leonard

After a strong start in Shamy's relationship by them kissing, Sheldon brings up about "The Flash", which enjoys watching. However, Amy is not interested but this angers him more. Amy finally stands her ground to Sheldon and she walks away from him. Now, Sheldon has to ask for advice on how to improve his relationship with her, but Penny and Leonard blame him for making her angry.

While having to deal with his problems, they debate whether to get married or not. After having a conversation with each other and Sheldon (who sometimes unnecessarily butted in), they finally decide to get married, but not without Leonard's confession. On the way to Vegas to get married, he admits that when he was at sea (back in the S7 premiere), he admitted that he kissed a girl. At first, Penny gets jealous at him but she decides to forgive him. They both agree to get married officially.

Raj & Emily

Meanwhile, the couple have a picnic in a graveyard. Before they meet up, he lets Bernadette and Howard know that he wants to break up with her since they are two different people and the fact that she creeps him out for wanting to have sex in a graveyard. However, Howard does not believe that Raj is brave enough to tell this to her face. At the graveyard, it seems that Raj wants to end the relationship wth her, but not before she predicts that he wants to breakup with her. However, it seems that he has changed his mind and tells her that he loves her. They kiss at the end.

Bernadette/Howard & Stuart

Elsewhere, Howard makes the suggestion to Bernadette that Stuart should move out. It should have been taken care of a long time ago as they claim. However, with him being sick, holidays, and his happiness coming back because of the bookstore opening, they did not have the guts to do it. Later, when he gets back from grocery shopping, the couple decide they want to have a chat with him. Just when she is about to announce that he needs to move out, his father texted him that it was his birthday today. Instead of them kicking him out, they celebrate his birthday with a small cake.

Ending
At the end of the season 8 finale, Sheldon decides to skype Amy. They both have been thinking about their relationship. After tolerating his immature behavior all of those years, she confronts him that she needs some space to sort things out. This shocks him and she says goodbye to him. In the last few seconds, he reaches in his juror and it is revealed that he has an engagement ring in it. This could implicate that Sheldon was going to propose to her. We'll have to find out in late September.

My Thoughts
There is no secret that this season has struggled (There were still some awesome episodes this season), but the past three episodes have been solid. Even though I'm a huge fan of Shamy, it was nice that Amy finally had the courage to stand up for herself and tell him that she needs a break from him. I really am interested to see what happens next in September on whether he was going to propose to her or he returns (or pawns) the ring since she dumped him. Also, I would have been really sad if Raj and Emily broke up as she was the first girl ever in his life to love him this much. With Raj, I'm glad he realized at the end that she will always have a dark side. What matters the most is the love she has for him. As for Penny and Leonard, I think it was too early for them to get married because their chemistry this season hasn't been that good. I would have saved the storyline of them getting married in the 200th episode instead. Although Stuart can be irritating to Bernadette and Howard, I was glad that they celebrated his birthday instead of kicking him off the curb. At times, she can be really sassy, but she can really have a good heart for people.

Episode Grade: B+
Overall Season Grade: B

  1. I'm going to catch a lot of crap for this because I know they have a really...enthusiastic following, but I'm kinda happy about the Shamy "breakup". I've never been able to like Amy and I've really tried.

While I have no doubt this split won't last long, I'm not broken up over it.

  2. Agree with both grades.
And man! Was I shocked when Sheldon showed the ring! It was quietly devastating...

The Shamy breakup may be able to make Sheldong see things with more focus now, but seeing that he planned on proposing makes it quite devastating.

This was an episode filled with great moments and development, funny and poignant, though it staled a bit with Howard and Raj's storylines.

As a whole, season 8 hasn't been great, but it hasn't been bad either. I think season 9 can do a lot of work to improve the show as a whole and I can't wait for it to come back.

And on a side note: yes, Sheldon should watch The Flash. And I, just like him, endured the quality declines of Smallville xD

  3. As much as i ship Shamy, I was glad she broke up with him. She has put up with a lot from him. 5 years is a long time. Sure he's grown in some ways, but she IS a woman with needs, and she's not getting any younger. She's been at a stand still and she loves him so much so i get it. But at the end of the day she's still a woman with needs, and she's been hella patient. But it's not only about the sex, there's still so much they haven't done in their relationship that wouldn't take 5 years to do. And they haven't even spoken about their future. The closest they came was when Sheldon wanted to go to Mars and they hypothetically discussed Amy going to so Sheldon could have alien babies, i mean c'mon. If you ask me Amy breaking up with him was long overdue. I look forward to seeing what he does to try and win her back.

Leonard and Penny were also disappointing. I would've been happy for them if the move they made didn't feel so obligated. It just felt like they were doing it b/c they had something to prove, not b/c they actually wanted to get married. After briefly discussing what they wanted for a wedding, they dropped it all within ten minutes and wanted to drive off to Vegas. ugh! Not a fan of that whole cliche in general. And i would be so pissed if they did it w/o the gang. Then Leonard goes and springs this news on her that also bothered. So you're saying if you weren't getting married you would've still kept that a secret?? I wish he could've told her sooo much sooner, not on the day she wants to spend the rest of her life with you.

Raj also bothered me. I really like him and Emily together, i don't want them to break up, but Raj is unhappy, and if he's unhappy, i'm unhappy. Sure this is his first girlfriend ever, but it's his first one not his last one. I hate when characters (or people in general) stay in relationships b/c they don't want to hurt the other' s feelings. Um, you're still hurting their feelings, you're just making it worse. And instead of him doing what he wanted to do, he did the opposite then let out the L word which made it ten times worse. Now he's gonna have an even harder time breaking up with her than before. And i hate that. It's gonna suck for both of them and i didn't want that for them.

Howard, Bernadette, and Stuart- lol that whole thing was just typical. I really don't have much to say about that. But they should be a little less subtle, and start leaving newspapers open so he can look for apartments.

For all this flack this show gets for being "Nerd Blackface", the lines about Smallville and his comments to Gollum could have been out of a Community episode

  5. i don't like people bashing Smallville, it's like they didn't know what the premise of the show was: it was an ORIGIN story about Superman, a show about Clark Kent NOT Supetman

  6. A sad episode for everyone.
    Raj/Emily... Howard/Bernadette and Stuart.
All could've been fine if they just talk things out but they didnt.
I like Emily in Raj's case, i think she is a great add to the story tho we have seen her in a very little episodes, i think her weirdness will make a great add and drive everyone (specially Sheldon) crazy.
Stuart has always been this guy that everyone hates but loves at then d and this show it. But there is a a fine line where is love and other is pity , tonight it felt more out of pity than everything else.
    Amy/Sheldon...... Penny/Leonard
Im glad that out of veryone trying to break things, Amy got teh balls to do it, you would've thought she woud eb the last to do that cause afetr everythign she has always been teh uinderdog and im glad she stood up for herself. She loves Sheldon but she is done with his crap, he shows his loev with little gestures but clearly otehr stuff are more important to him ar i think that's just the way he is. He has never been ina relationship and trying to balance the things he liks and all the things he does with the person he loves it shows how difficult of a time he has or how he cant function properly.
I didnt even noticed tehy hadnt set a date. I guess i really even didnt care, they practicaly lived together xd. But like Penny said Leonard bringing up that story it felt like a move to stall things out betweet them. And wrong move there.
And for a wedding in vegas iw as hoping they would start calling all his friends and go on a trip there for it.
For a season finale. It didnt felt like one. Like the set up for one?, yeah, but season finale? Not. At. All
