As you know each year we try to see how good your prediction skills are in determining which shows will be renewed and which ones will be cancelled.
You can see how we did last season here.
So we're going to be running a series of polls asking you what your predictions are for next season. The remaining networks' polls will be posted during the course of the next week or so.

Today it's the FOX shows. You can find promos, clips and photos for most of the shows via the FOX Menu at the top of the site.
We have a poll for each of the shows airing on FOX this season. For each show you can choose whether it will be renewed or cancelled.
So vote below and let us know in the comments which shows you hope will be renewed, and which ones you think will be cancelled.
NOTE: All of these polls will remain open until the beginning of August so you have quite a bit of time to get your predictions in.
Isn't the X-Files just a limited series? I think it'll run for one season and that'll be it although it'd be exciting if there was more.

ReplyDeleteThe X-Files is a limited series, like 24:LAD, so I don't think it's even up for a renewal.
ReplyDeleteFOX considered another season of 24, and they are still considering to make one but without Kiefer Sutherland, so a renewal for The X-Files is very much in the cards depending on how it does
ReplyDeleteFOX's renewals is anyone's guess. I can't see them excited at the prospects of extending New Girl, Bones, and Sleepy Hollow past next year, but American Idol ending means that they have to find something to replace multiple hours.
ReplyDeleteEmpire is the easiest pick by far.
ReplyDeleteOf the new shows I had a hard time predicting The Frankenstein Code, which I went with cancelled, though it could vary. Of the returning shows, Sleepy Hollow is the trickiest one, it'll depend on how it fares on Thursdays and with the poor Bones lead in it may be headed to cancellation, but I'm not ready to call... I went with an optimistic renewal, just because it may do well enough to get another season, but it'll be an uphill battle
I am aware of that, but even if 24 returns in a few years, I would not count that as a renewal. A show that does not make it to next season's schedule (fall, midseason, summer) is not renewed in my book.
ReplyDeleteIf there are any quick changes to the schedule, I'd guess once the ratings start rolling in, Bones and Sleepy Hollow will change timeslots. Sleepy Hollow vs. The Blacklist vs. Scandal vs. football is not a battle this show is going to win.

Can The X-Files even be renewed? If so, I guess I say renewal but I am not sure about it.
They both look like fun but they're in a ridiculously competitive timeslot. They'll only get renewed fail less disasterously than Fox thought they would. Their competition is The Voice/NCIS/The Flash/& The Muppets-Fresh Off the Boat.
ReplyDeleteCelebrity Apprentice was 100% renewed 2 years ago and it returned now. Hotel Hell as well. Once upon a time in its life, 24 also spent an entire season not airing due to the strike and it was still renewed. I don't think that is a good criterion to use. But I am not sure how to classify these either.

Scream Queens & The X-Files are both limited series, so "renewal" = "we want/plan to make another one in the future, if not necessarily next season." (But Scream Queens'll probably show back up in 2016-2017 if it hits. TXF could take another couple of years a la 24.)
ReplyDeleteSQ is not limited series it's an anthology like AHS. If it gets a second season it will be about a new murder case.

ReplyDeleteDepending on how the reality shows perform on Fridays, I wouldn't be surprised if FOX schedules The Frankenstein Code/Houdini & Doyle there midseason and if both can manage to pull low 1s, keep them both there for a while. It solves FOX's problem of what to put on Fridays.
ReplyDeleteScream Queens has been confirmed to be an anthology so if renewed it can be back next fall with a new story, just like AHS does every year.

ReplyDeleteLimited series are like an awesome way of hedging a bet while also maintaining a sense of 'wow' about a brand. If something is a limited series, the contracts only exist for that one series, so the audience has to treat it as if this is it. It ups the appeal so people "event-ize" it and up the numbers. It lets them bring in talent who don't want to commit to the grind of a regular series and that also changes up what they can do with the story because now, just because a character is played by a big-name actor or actress in the series, it doesn't guarantee they'll survive. (See: a certain ABC limited event series this past year.) The story can wind up being better because of this, which is another plus to making something a "limited event series". (Not really The X-Files as they aren't going to kill off Mulder or Scully but it's relevant to pretty much every other limited event series out there.)
ReplyDeleteIf the project fails entirely, then a network can sweep it under the rug by saying that it was only ever commissioned for a limited run anyway (see: Fox & 'Gracepoint'.) If a network feels like it's worth it to keep it going, then it can return (ABC's 'American Crime') or it can even be set to return as a potential complete reboot of the franchise into a regular series again (what Fox is considering doing with 24, which is currently seesawing between limited event series and rebooted-but-not-exclusively-Kiefer-fronted regular series.) It also kind of depends on what the talent wants to do. The X-Files will undoubtedly be back beyond this run, provided DD and GA want to do it but they're both really busy with other projects and there will be at the very least another year or two between the Winter 2016 revival and anything else in the future. Shy of them refusing to do it anymore, more X-Files will totally happen.
I don't know what to expect from the show. But cause of the cast I hope the story and timeslot really work out for it.
ReplyDeleteIf you want to get technical, it's not a renewal but it is a recommissioning because it's the same brand. If you want to get really technical, you also can't say that Scream Queens will be renewed because that, too, is a limited event series, even though shy of it arriving DOA (which is very unlikely), Fox will order the hell out of more of it.

ReplyDeleteYeah, exactly! There's just too much on, which could help Fox's comedies with the delayed numbers. I hope they succeed as they both at least look different than most new comedies this year. I was trying not to bleach my eyeballs after the Life in Pieces trailer.

ReplyDeleteYes, you are right. My mistake. Meant to say Secrets & Lies, which is a limited event series that was brought back on the following year's scheduled with a same character in the one played by Juliette Lewis. So... is it now technically a regular series? Who knows, probably, but ABC seems to want to make it one. It's interesting that by having Juliette Lewis play the same character in the second series/second season/whatever, that she won't qualify for an Emmy nomination for the second series/season/whatever if it's still a limited event series. So, ABC might have just turned something that was a limited run into a regular series because they felt it could be successful that way and they could get more out of it. It qualifies as a "limited event series" for this past first season which helps boost its profile a bit and then is a regular season for its Season 2?
ReplyDeleteIt's really not much different than Downton Abbey & the miniseries category a few years ago. Everyone knew Downton was getting a second season and wasn't just a miniseries but calling it one allowed them to get more out of it at the time.

*Now* it looks to be. Its whole first season, it was a "limited event series", just like The X-Files, Gracepoint, 24: Live Another Day, etc.. It was picked up as a limited event series but now looks like it's possible that ABC is making it a regular series for its second season. Probably because of Emmy nominations-- at least in part. The acting fields are super-competitive but the actress in a limited event series is not quite as competitive. So they can campaign for Juliette Lewis to get an Emmy nomination in the limited category for what is now the show's first season, then she is disqualified from that category for its second season because you can't be nominated twice for the same role in subsequent limited event series. But if it's now a regular series? Then the profile boost of calling it a limited run for the first season helps it as a regular series for the second. ReplyDeleteI don't think The X FILES should be a consideration for being cancelled only because I seriously doubt David and Gillian would any more after this. Very surprised that Bones vote was split I am a Bones fan and even I do not think David and Emily will go past next year and their ratings will not get any better. Even with their syndication money I would be surprised if they negotiate with them next year

The fact they didn't already announce it being a final season maybe means they may not trust their pilots, but I still do not think David and Emily will come back after this one. Of course Emily said a couple of years ago she didn't think she would go past 10 years so who knows.

-New Girl: Could go either way. If it comes back to last fall's numbers, I can see it getting a renewal. But given that it's coming back at midseason, I'm not sure it will get enough. Cancelled
-Sleepy Hollow: Bones will drag this down ratings-wise. I feel this could go either way too. Since I'm not sure if Fox will cancel three veterans, I'm going for renewal.
-Bordertown: Am I the only one who thinks this has a shot? I dont think this has been scheduled yet but I believe it could go to Sundays. If it does, I see it doing numbers equal to the current line-up. And I mean, one day Fox is gonna cancel either of Bob's Burgers, The Simpsons or Family Guy and it will need a replacement. Renewed
New shows
-Grandfathered: Leading off Tuesday at 8 with a new comedy? If Fox premieres it before premiere week (like Dads and Brooklyn 9-9 two seasons ago), it might premiere to decent numbers. Either way, it will be cancelled by season's end.
-Houdini and Doyle: Cancelled
-Lucifer: Unscheduled, but I can't see this getting a good time slot. Cancelled
-Minority Report: It won't pull extremely high numbers, but it will do better than The Following. Renewed
-Rosewood: Again, why this was scheduled before Empire instead of after is beyond me. Cancelled
-Scream Queens: The comedies will drag its ratings down, but it will still do decent I guess. Renewed

ReplyDeleteWhy is the X-Files on this, isn't it just a 6 episode miniseries? Does it really have a chance at being more than that?
ReplyDeleteI'm a little optimistic about Lucifer, since they're giving it a fairly decent lead-in. Sleepy Hollow, with them owning that one I definitely think if it can stay above a 1.0 they're gonna try to give that one a renewal as well.
ReplyDeleteI believe it's already been said Lucifer would premiere after The X-Files and it's regular time slot will be Mondays at 9/8c where SH has been for the past two seasons. Not a bad timeslot, I'd say.

ReplyDeleteUm, i believe Bones will be renewed again. I definitely see New Girl being renewed. As for Sleepy Hollow, i really don't know, it really depends on how season 3 goes. With Katrina gone, i see a lot of people who left tuning back in, otoh, with their whole rule on having more filler episodes to take over the season, that may turn the people who remained with the series since the beginning, off.

ReplyDeleteanything not procedural/drama on network tv, particularly syfy on certain networks seem to usually go that way.
ReplyDeleteYou're right! There is so much information during the Upfronts that some things tend to get past me. So Lucifer will have X-Files as lead-in for its first five episodes and then Gotham. That makes me a bit more positive, but I'm not changing my prediction.
