Scene Of The Week - May 3, 2015 - POLL

May 4, 2015

A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in past seven days on TV.

ARROW, "Al Sah-him", April 29, 2015, Actors: Stephen Amell, Willa Holland and more, The Scene: The fight scene at the warehouse
Daniel van der Veer:
This was quite a big fight with various people involved. Felicity smuggling in the guns, with Lyla taking them and starting to shoot at the League. And then everyone jumps in and fights Oliver and the League. Nyssa, Laurel, Diggle and Lyla all fight the League, even though they can't prevent Nyssa from being taken. And the fact that their fight came to an end because of Thea, makes it even better.

BACKSTROM, "Rock Bottom", April 30, 2015, Actors: Thomas Dekker, Rainn Wilson, The Scene: Valentine hands Backstrom his mother's bowl
A Dahne:
This was especially touching because Backstrom thought it burned up when he threw it in the fire in a pique of rage. That Valentine realized how special it was and then gave it to him at the place where they scattered his mom's ashes solidified their standing as brothers. I also loved when Valentine stood up to Blue for Backstrom. Their bond is one of the best things about the show.

BATES MOTEL, "The Pit", April 27, 2015, Actors: Max Thieriot, Kenny Johnson, Vera Farmiga and more, The Scenes: Dylan and Caleb have a shootout with the gun runners & Norma and Norman's big argument at the end
Geo N:
Caleb and Dylan arrive at their delivery destination. A shootout ensues, but Caleb is prepared and saves Dylan. Also picked by DarkUFO and Darth Locke
Romain Ossust: Norma and Norman's big argument at the end, with Norma screaming "You're gonna kill me Norman".

BATTLE CREEK, "Old Wounds", April 26, 2015, Actors: Janet McTeer, Rotimi Akinosho
The Scene: Guz and Danny reconcile
A Dahne:
Guz explaining her back story to Danny and describing her own addiction problems made for great backstory. Still it was her saying that raising him helped her fight addiction and that now she wants to return the favor that really stuck out. It was a great heart moment that allowed mother and son to finally reconcile.

GREY'S ANATOMY, "She's Leaving Home", April 30, 2015, Actors: Caterina Scorsone, Kevin McKidd, The Scene: Amelia threatens to relapse
Jimmy Ryan:
While the folks at Shondaland floundered through a 2 parter that achieved nothing that fans wanted, and further cemented the departure of Derek Shepherd as perhaps the most monstrous cockup television has seen in this decade, Caterina Scorsone had a huge challenge on her hands in playing the devastated sister of Derek. In short, she was by far the highlight of the 2 hours on Thursday night, producing her finest performance yet for the series. Amelia's scene with Owen where she threatened to relapse was her best moment of them all as Scorsone called on all her skills to bring the suppressed grief Amelia had bottled up, to the surface. It was a scene that never should have had to have happened, but Scorsone truly made it her own. Klutzy girl: Caterina absolutely knocked that scene out of the park.
Jamie Coudeville: Such a powerful scene. Caterina Scorsone gave an amazing acting performance. I had to force myself not to cry.
Diana Mack: Caterina Scorsone gave GsA a great improvement, her character is so fresh and she's a wonderful actress.

GRIMM, "You Don't Know Jack", May 1, 2015, Actor: Claire Coffee
The Scene: Adalind talks to her mother's coffin
Diana Mack:
Adalind talks to her mother's coffin, thanking her for being dead when she needed her help. Lol, that scene was hilarious. Adalind has all the best lines, and Claire Coffee is a comedian herself. Bravo!

JANE THE VIRGIN, "Chapter Twenty", April 27, 2015, Actors: Gina Rodriguez, Yael Grobglas
The Scene: Jane and Petra's wrestling fight
Romain Ossust:
It was hilarious.

LOUIE, "Bobby's House", April 30, 2015, Actors: Louis C.K, Pamela Adlon, The Scene: Pamela gets Louie to put on makeup and roleplays as a man
Max Conte:
After doing Louie's makeup to hide bruises, Pamela makes him over to look like a woman, then puts a cap on herself to look like a man. They flirt and eventually have sex this way. Louie's girl talk was so hilarious, and the scene was awesomely awkward.

MAD MEN, "Time & Life", April 26, 2015, Actors: Elisabeth Moss, Jay R. Ferguson, The Scene: Peggy confesses to Stan that she gave up a child
Tonya Papanikolas:
This was my favorite scene of the week. It was such a huge moment for Peggy to tell Stan about giving her child up for adoption. And it really cemented their bond and friendship. Stan proved himself to be a loyal, caring, sensitive friend. And Peggy proved that she could be vulnerable with somebody (apart from Don). The scene showed the struggle and guilt Peggy has dealt with, but it also showed the peace she’s come to feel about her decision. I just thought it was a great moment for Peggy.
Max Conte: There were many callbacks to Peggy's kid with Pete throughout the episode, and Peggy finally breaking down and talking about it was a huge breakthrough.

MARVEL'S AGENTS OF SHIELD, "The Dirty Half Dozen", April 28, 2015, Actors: Chloe Bennet, Clark Gregg and more, The Scenes: Skye fights Hydra's agents and saves Lincoln & Coulson and Ward's phone call at the end
Justyna K:
It seems like forever since the day we met Skye back in the pilot. After everything she's been through and thanks to May's training, she's become quite a fighter. This week, on her way to save Lincoln, Skye encounters Hydra agents and takes them all down, one by one, in a spectacularly well made single-take action sequence, done by the great Chloe Bennet. Kudos! Brilliant work by everyone involved. As if this fantastic moment wasn't enough, I really loved the following part where Skye managed to control her powers well enough to bring back Lincoln flatlining on a surgery table. It's horrifying to think about everything Hydra's doing to people with powers, so I'm truly relieved that Lincoln's okay. Both Skye and Chloe Bennet made a great impression on me this week. Now I can't wait to see where the story's going from here. Here's to another brilliant episode like this one!
Klutzy girl: Everything about it was perfect. And the fact that Ward doesn't believe he has any good inside of him highlighted that he does and now Coulson knows too. The redemption arc is going to be a fun, painful ride.

NCIS, "Troll", April 28, 2015, Actors: Emily Wickersham, Jamie Bamber, The Scene: Jake and Bishop's conversation in the car
Daniel van der Veer:
That was a great conversation between Bishop and Jake. It really highlighted how their marriage changed when Bishop joined NCIS. I like the fact that the show addressed how the couple is dealing with it and how it impacts Bishop. It was good that she also told Jake that she killed someone. Great moment in the character development of Bishop!

NCIS: LOS ANGELES, "Field of Fire", April 27, 2015, Actors: LL Cool J, Eric Christian Olsen and more, The Scene: The team talks about kids
Tonya Papanikolas:
I thought this was a very funny scene. It was written well with great dialogue. There were so many hilarious lines. You could also feel the rapport between all of the team members as they joked with and made fun of one another. And you learned more about the different characters. That's an all-around fun scene.

ONCE UPON A TIME, "Lily", April 26, 2015, Actors: Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parrilla, Agnes Bruckner, The Scene: Regina stops Emma from killing Lily
Jamie Coudeville:
There were a lot of good scenes with these two this week. But I love how they've kind of switched places. Their relationships is the main reason I still watch.

ORPHAN BLACK, "Formalized, Complex, and Costly", May 2, 2015, Actors: Tatiana Maslany, Jordan Gavaris, Josh Vokey, The Scene: Cosima, Scott and Felix perform brain surgery on dead Seth
Darth Locke:
Cosima, Scott and Felix perform brain surgery on dead Seth in Felix's bathroom. Like Hannibal meets Bates Motel, this scene was truly astonishing, especially since Cosima was so physically comfortable with it, but yet uniquely decides this is an appropriate time to continue to ponder about metaphysics!

PERSON OF INTEREST, "Asylum", April 28, 2015, Actors: Michael Emerson, Amy Acker and more, The Scenes: The Machine gives up its location to save Finch and Root & Root kills Martine & Root spots Shaw
Justyna K:
This one's not only my scene of the week but also one of my favorite moments of the entire series. Harold's creation is undeniably impressive one. But for the Machine to truly care about the team, enough to sacrifice its location to the enemy that wishes to destroy it, that's so much more than I imagined. In one-of-the-kind scene, the Machine communicates with everyone in the room, negotiating for the lives of the people it cares about. And I loved it when at one point the Machine addressed Harold directly. I could watch an entire episode where Finch and the Machine talk to each other. This show is certainly one of the best ones on TV and it's the moments like this one that makes it so beautifully unique. Also, the actors were, as always, absolutely brilliant! Kudos! I can't believe it's almost the end of the season. It's been fantastic. Also picked by Bradley Adams and Ben L
Jimmy Ryan: Root snaps Martine's neck, then surrenders to Greer. Totally out of the blue and totally badass. One of the most satisfying enemy/nemesis deaths I've seen on television. Also picked by DarkUFO, Darth Locke and Romain Ossust
Diana Mack: Root spots Shaw - yes, she's alive! Can't wait to see her coming back with the team.

STALKER, "The Woods", April 27, 2015, Actors: Maggie Q, Victor Rasuk and more, The Scenes: Beth visits Ben in the hospital & Beth watches the cabin burn with Ray inside
Tonya Papanikolas:
Maggie Q was phenomenal in this scene. Her character has been too stoic for me. I actually think it has hurt the show. But here we finally see Beth’s emotions – and Maggie Q couldn’t have played it any better. Beth really looked traumatized and relieved and happy for the help she received from her team. But she didn’t need to express her thanks in words because her face and eyes said it all. Finally everything was over and she could no longer control her emotions. They were just bubbling over. I also thought it was fitting that everyone was there together – they have become Beth’s family. I was surprised this story didn’t carry on to the finale, but I thought this scene was a nice ending to the story. If the show gets canceled, I will be sad that we never saw Beth’s character continue to develop after this point – it’s a great jumping off point for something deeper and more real.
Daniel van der Veer: So it finally appears to be over. Ray is dead, killed in a fire. It couldn't have been more symbolic since he killed Beth's family by setting their house on fire. Beth watching Ray die was a great moment. You could see how relieved she was that everything is finally over. Great acting by Maggie Q in this scene, but also throughout the rest of the episode.

THE BIG BANG THEORY, "The Maternal Combustion", April 30, 2015, Actors: Laurie Metcalf, Christine Baranski and more, The Scene: Beverly meets Mary (picked by Ben L)

THE BLACKLIST, "Quon Zhang", April 30, 2015, Actors: James Spader, Megan Boone
The Scene: Red tells Liz about her mother (picked by Geo N)

THE FLASH, "The Trap", April 28, 2015, Actors: Grant Gustin, Tom Cavanagh and more, The Scenes: Barry talks to Eobard Thawne for the first time & Team Flash attempts to set a trap for Wells
Justyna K:
First of all, Tom Cavanagh is doing such a brilliant job on the series. For the first time Eobard Thawne confronts Team Flash and all it takes is a phone call to change everything. No more hiding, no more secrets, what a brilliant hour for the truth to come out, a real game-changer. And a chance for all the actors to shine. I loved the scene where Team Flash attempts to set a trap for Wells, poor Cisco though, that must have been terrifying, but Thawne making them realize he was one step ahead the entire time made the episode for me. I can't wait for the good guys to take him down but I have to admit, Wells is one memorable villain. I'm very interested to learn why he hates Barry so much as it doesn't seem like a good man like Allen could ever do anything dark enough to start all of this conflict. Very excited for the final episodes, this show never ceases to amaze me. Kudos! Also picked by Bradley Adams
Ben L: Cisco, Barry, Caitlin, and Joe try to take out Harrison Wells.

THE FOLLOWING, "Evermore", April 27, 2015, Actors: James Purefoy and more
The Scene: Joe Carroll's execution
Jimmy Ryan:
Though I'm on the fence about capital punishment, there was nothing better than watching the evil spirit depart the body. But where will that spirit go now? We will have to watch to find out. Also picked by Bradley Adams

THE GOLDBERGS, "Dance Party USA", April 29, 2015, Actors: Troy Gentile, Hayley Orrantia
The Scene: Barry tells Erica that she can join Laney and him at Dance Party USA
A Dahne:
I love The Goldbergs because they do such a great job of combining laughs and heart. This was one of the best scenes of the season because Barry lets Erica know that he understands what she has been going through, gives her courage to not care what she looks like, and reaffirms their sibling bond. Great scene.

THE ORIGINALS, "City Beneath the Sea", April 27, 2015, Actors: Steven Krueger and more, The Scene: Aiden's funeral
Jamie Coudeville:
I loved the whole atmosphere of this scene. The music was great. Everyone is always arguing on this show, so it's nice to see a whole community come together to bury their friend. Josh broke my heart.

  3. Voted for Coulson and Ward's conversation on AOS. Other than that I didn't really have any scenes that stuck with me.

  4. what makes you think that Coulson thinks there's good left in Ward?

  5. Person of Interest - The Machine gives itself up to save Harold and Root.

The Flash - Harrison Wells is always one step ahead. What an amazing character.

  6. AOS: Skye taking out the Hydra agents. Hell yes.

The Middle: Sue getting her prom moment, what a nice dude that guy was. Sue having happy moments always makes me smile

Veep: Dan getting screwed over at the end, that was funny as hell.

  7. The smile on his face after hanging up with Ward - that he's doing something that wasn't for himself or Skye for once. Coulson's starting Ward on his redemption path and this is definitely just the beginning. I'm so excited!

  8. The AoS fight scene. Although I take issue with the fact that they've made Skye this badass at fighting this quickly, as in addition to her powers, she's on her way to really eclipsing everyone else - it was a downright extraordinary scene from a technical standpoint. I can't even imagine how they pulled it off on a network TV shooting schedule... they get like 8 or 9 days to film an episode, yet they managed to do an entire fight scene that's ONE SHOT. Mad props to Chloe, director Kevin Tancharoen (who BTW is the brother of showrunner Maurissa Tancharoen), the stunt coordinator and everyone else involved.

  9. Agents of SHIELD: Skye's one-shot.
Revenge: Emily gets taken by the police.

  10. a One-Shot fight is very hard productively? is that why that they're so rare?

    ReplyDelete
  11. wait you're not messing with me right? Coulson SMILED? how in the world did i miss that?! i thought Skye would be the one to start his redemption

  12. Person of Interest. The entire penultimate episode.

  13. When you're shooting an ordinary fight scene, if one of the actors botches up a move, all you have to do is discard (and then redo) that particular shot. If the entire scene is one shot, however, every mistake means you have to start the whole thing all over again. So I think it's pretty impressive that they were able to do this with as little time as they get to produce an episode. If they only needed one take, that means Chloe (and everyone else) got it ALL right the FIRST time they filmed the scene, which is commendable.

The one-shot fight in the end of Daredevil episode 2 is similar, and actually much longer, but Netflix shows spend a lot more time in production. For a broadcast network show like AoS, this is a wonder.

  19. No Gotham? I'm not saying it's the greatest show by far or anything, but I have still kept watching it from the beginning just to see how things eventually turn out over the season...I found the best scenes this week to be Nygma's scenes, Bullock attending that event, the ending montage preluding the finale...

    ReplyDelete
  20. The Flash, Person of Interest, Agents of Shield, and The Originals scenes mentioned were all great. Things are really getting crazy on POI. I'm worried about what will happen in the finale.

  21. Those were great scenes with Nygma...

  22. In a Zap2It report I read the actress + 2 other people worked 6+ extra hours training and getting it ready.

  23. Grey's - Caterina saved the episode for me.

  24. Battle Creek, and the winner of this week: Stalker.

  25. Couldn't believe Barbara told The Ogre to kill her parents even though they did sorta just put her out when she needed somewhere to stay...The whole Penguin setup to start the war between Maroni and Falcone was pretty great, too...I've grown to like the show more since it began - I hated Bullock when the show started but he grew on me like a fungus lol awesome character now - his reaction to whatever was going on off-screen was hilarious...Looks like we're getting to the origin of the Batcave from the preview for next week

  26. The Big Bang Theory:Bernadette makes Raj, Stuart and Howard help her with household chores. In the midst of sweeping and scrubbing the kitchen foor, the 3 guys start singing "It's a hard knock life" from Annie. Bernadette walks in on them singing in the kitchen and immediately leaves in disgust. The entire sub-plot leading up to that scene wasn't very exciting, but it was worth the little mini-musical in the end, One of the most hilarious moments this season. I also enjoyed the encounter between Leonard and Sheldon's mothers, but for me, the funniest part was the exchange between Leonard and Dr. Hofstetter as they walk up the flight of stairs to their apartment.

Grimm: Adalind tests the potion and suppresses her Hexenbiest powers. Adalind's speach at her mother's grave was also great. I agree about Claire Coffee really having the best comedic timing.

Flash: Barry talks to Eobard Thawne

  27. Person of Interest, as usual, knocks it out of the park. This episode was everything a penultimate episode always is on this show. The stakes are high and people are dying and fans are crying. Great TV. Hope it gets its fifth season, and then some.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Very difficult to winnow that down to 3. I clicked on: POI - The machine surrenders to Samaritan (so many layered elements there), Grimm - Adalind talks to her mother (absolutely hysterical), TBBT - The mothers meet. Wow.

Others - Outlander - Claire tells Jamie she doesn't think she can have kids

    ReplyDelete
  29. wow they really wanted to get it right

  30. wait SUPPRESSES her powers?!

  33. Pretty much all of Asylum.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Like two people have said below, pretty much all of POI's penultimate episode.

  35. The Vampire Diaries - Caroline turns back her humanity
Candice is a brilliant actress. The way she turned it back, the way she cried for her "mommy", and she realized what she's done...it was perfect! Her tears broke my heart. I love Nina Dobrev, but Candice is as good as Nina is. :) <3

  36. I had a thought that she was drugged at that moment she told the Ogre to kill her parents. What do you think? I actually loved Bullock form the start, he is so funny to watch - great actor.

I don't like watching previews, but if what you say is true then I might watch this one. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hmmm you might be right she could have been drugged - would make more sense...I've liked Bullock ever since the Halloween episode where they picked up a cold case he'd worked in the past and they showed the flashback of him and his former partner with the Mask of the Goat killer and then after that he became more of a loyal partner to Jim as well as a friend...The preview was the one they showed after the ep, Bruce presses something and the fireplace moves I believe so it leads me to believe they're opening up that chapter now - curious to see what Bruce's parents had that hidden alcove for
