Scene Of The Week - May 24, 2015 - POLL

A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in past seven days on TV.

BATTLE CREEK, "Homecoming", May 17, 2015, Actors: Michael Beach and more, The Scene: Larry talks about his son's degenerative brain disorder
A Dahne:
Larry talks about his son's degenerative brain disorder because of playing football with concussions. There was something very poignant about this scene. Yes, he admitted to murder but watching him break over watching the deterioration of son until he finally committed suicide was memorable and heartbreaking.

BROOKLYN NINE NINE, "Johnny and Dora", May 17, 2015, Actors: Andre Braugher, Andy Samberg and more, The Scene: Captain Holt leaves 99th precinct
Justyna K:
I absolutely adore this show, so glad we're getting another season! Especially with this ending. There were many great moments in the episode that would be worth mentioning here, Jake and Amy, for example, were really lovely together. More than I expected, actually. But it's the Captain's speech when he's forced to say goodbye to his precinct, that I couldn't not include in the article. A great performance by Andre Braugher! Holt's known for being strict and his cold and reserved manner of showing emotions, so when he openly admitted how much this job, place and people really meant for him, it makes it a truly special moment. And him actually doing a robotic voice per Jake's request makes it all so unexpectedly sad. At least he's got Gina, who chooses to leave with him. I loved everyone's reaction ("What the hell???") and even though I'm sure the entire situation means quite a lot of hilarious moments in the future, I already can't wait for the Captain to be back. Kudos for a fantastic finale!

GAME OF THRONES, "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken", May 17, 2015, Actors: Maisie Williams, Tom Wlaschiha, The Scene: Arya discovers the faces chamber of The Faceless Men (picked by Darth Locke)

iZOMBIE, "Mr. Berserk", May 19, 2015, Actor: Matthew MacCaull, The Scene: Sebastian becomes a zombie
A Dahne:
Sebastian, the assassin, rises out of the water a zombie. I had a really hard time picking the best scene for iZombie this week. I think because I like two scenes equally but for different reasons. Sebastian crawling out, obviously a zombie, won over Major taking care of a drunk Liv because it will have more impact on the story in the long run. Don't taste zombie blood. Good to know.

JONATHAN STRANGE & MR NORRELL, "The Friends of English Magic", May 17, 2015, Actor: Eddie Marsan, The Scene: Norrell brings the statues to life in York Minster
Sandi:
Again this is another show where it was difficult to choose which scene to go for, but I finally picked this over Marc Warren's appearance as the Gentleman and the Vinculus & Childeramass' tarot reading. This first spell that Norrell casts in York Minster is wonderfully done, I couldn't imagine what was going to happen to begin with, so the creepy whispering voices threw me a little. I like that that used the real statues from the cathedral - seeing the King's Screen come to life and having them all arguing with each other was a lovely touch for example.

MAD MEN, "Person to Person", May 17, 2015, Actors: Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, January Jones, Jay R. Ferguson and more, The Scenes: Stan and Peggy declare their love for one another & A random stranger talks about not being seen & Don calls Betty after hearing about her diagnosis
Tonya Papanikolas:
Stan and Peggy declare their love for one another. What a fun scene. It kind of comes out of nowhere as Stan suddenly starts talking about his feelings for Peggy. And it throws her off. When she has to respond, I love how she talks through her own feelings out loud to herself until she realizes she loves him, too. Elisabeth Moss was fantastic in this scene. She expressed such an array of emotions until she finally started crying and smiling to herself. In the end it’s fun seeing Peggy sappy, sweet and in love. What a great moment when Stan runs into the room and she tells him she loves him – and they kiss. I loved this surprise ending for Peggy. The scene was as unique as the characters.
Darth Locke: A random stranger talks about not being seen, including his metaphoric Refrigerator Dream. I didn't like Man Men's Series Finale much at all, but this scene I thought was a really creative way to tell the viewers one last time who both Donald Draper is and who he isn't and was one final oddity, that at least for five minutes, allowed some kind of emotional response from Don.
Max Conte: Don calls Betty after hearing about her diagnosis. This will go down as one of my favourite scenes in one of my favourite series ever. 7+ years worth of love, hate, sadness and anger came through incredibly in one scene. Betty, knowing she'll be gone soon, was heartbreakingly honest with Don, making it very clear she wanted their children to be raised by her family - not him. When Don broke down and called her "Birdie", an old nickname, and she responded simply with "I know," I was totally crushed. Jon Hamm and January Jones were incredible.
Diana Mack: The final scene. A relaxed Don Draper, ready to do yoga, suddenly smiles: he's found a new idea, maybe for his next spot and he's ready to get back to Sterling Cooper & co? I've loved the series finale. Everything fit perfectly and there were so many changes in the characters. Donald Draper ended his painful journey on accepting who he really is and left behind all the sins he has done -- he's not Dick Whitman, that man is dead - but just Donald Draper, a salesman in a publicity agency - and do I need to mention the Coke spot at the end of the episode? Truly amazing. I'm going to miss this show

NCIS: LOS ANGELES, "Chernoff, K.", May 18, 2015, Actors: Chris O'Donnell, Linda Hunt
The Scene: Hetty tells Callen his father is dead
Tonya Papanikolas:
Although this turned out not to be true, I was happy to have this scene because it was an emotional moment for the character, and Chris O’Donnell really shined. He showed us how hard the news hit Callen. He was shocked, emotional, agitated, disappointed. You felt bad for him as he realized his dad had lived in Moscow while he was there. But now he’s lost any opportunity to meet him (or so he thinks). He also hung onto any information Hetty gave him about his dad. This was a moment fans had hoped wasn’t true, and it was a sad scene. And it made it all the better when we found out later it wasn’t true!

ORPHAN BLACK, "Certain Agony of the Battlefield", May 23, 2015, Actors: Tatiana Maslany, Dylan Bruce, Jordan Gavaris and more, The Scenes: Sarah's dream sequence & Alison and Donnie twerking in the bedroom & Paul's last stand & Felix visits Rachel
Tonya Papanikolas:
Sarah meets Beth in her dream. What an awesome scene! I loved getting to meet Beth, who we only saw for a second in the first episode. But it’s clear from this scene how much her death has impacted Sarah. The visuals of the scene were spectacular. I loved how the camera followed Beth in one long shot as she talked to Sarah in one part of the room, then walked and talked to Sarah in another area. It looked so cool! The tone of the scene was also fantastic. Beth blamed Sarah in the dream, which showed that Sarah feels guilty about Beth’s death and everything else that’s going on. And I love how it ended, tying into Beth’s train jump. As usual, Tatiana Maslany was wonderful. She created a distinct new character in Beth: serious and practical, yet distraught and overburdened. This scene was spectacular from every aspect.
Darth Locke: There was so much to love about this episode. I wish I could choose almost every scene, but I felt that it was this scene that brought together and transitioned so many parts of the series, let alone the episode, and also let us explore a more metaphysical aspect, but this time from a unexpected place, Sarah! She was able to get in touch with Beth to preparation to let go of her and, by extension, Paul, but also to hold onto Helena and motherhood. Just beautiful.
Jamie Coudeville: Paul's last stand. I was going to go with the dream sequence at first but then this scene came along. I've been a Sarah and Paul fan from the start (even with everything that happened last season) and I was so excited to see them have scenes together again. My heart broke when he didn't go with Sarah, at this point I knew he wouldn't make it but I did not see that grenade coming. The entire scene with the flashbacks was great, brought tears to my eyes.
Nirat Anop: Felix visits Rachel. Felix's love for Sarah is utterly strong, the way he "harasses" Rachel for answers about Castor is both frightening and heartbreaking, the sheer amount of desperation is vivid on his face, the way he breaks down has to be one of Jordan Gavaris' best performances on Orphan Black to date. The subsequent humiliation in Rachel's face just broke my heart especially at the end of the episode as she cries while looking at a photo whilst painting. It cannot be mentioned enough just how incredible Tatiana Maslany was in this phenomenal episode!
Sandi: Alison & Donnie twerking in the bedroom. It was a very close call between this, Paul taking the out the lab with a grenade as he died and Felix visiting Rachel this week, all three scenes were brilliant. But I had to go with the comedy in the end as it was needed to balance out the heavier drama elsewhere in the episode, and I really missed the two characters last week so I was glad they were back in the spotlight again.

SUPERNATURAL, "Brother's Keeper", May 20, 2015, Actors: Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Julian Richings, The Scene: Sam talks Dean off the ledge
Justyna K:
This is why I can never truly let go of this show. The way that Sam and Dean always fight for each other. No matter what happens, whether they're against Lucifer, demons, angels, Mark of Cain or Death, in the end, they're much stronger together and their bond, their brotherly love is still my favorite thing about their story. This time, it's Sam trying to get through to his big brother, refusing to leave his side or call him anything but a good man and even willing to sacrifice himself to save Dean. Very much like Dean back in season five finale, which makes it even more powerful and emotional moment. First, I have to say, I missed this Sam so much, he finally seems like his old self so that's easily one of the best things about this season. And it was a pretty good one, glad I caught up with it. I always miss this show, mostly because Sam and Dean and the wonderful actors portraying them. Jensen and Jared did such an amazing work in this scene, their acting is always award worthy and I can never say it enough. Kudos! And one other thing that makes this moment so special - the photos. I love how much their mom means to Winchesters, even if they got to spend so little time with her. And I don't believe there's much the two wouldn't do for her. It's a beautiful thought and such a strong family. Excited to see what the ending means for season 11. Congratulations about that once again!
A Dahne: In an ode to Swan Song, the Supernatural finale flipped that episode on its head. Family pictures stood in place of the Impala and Sam was the one who would not leave his brother's side this time. He was clearly willing to make the biggest sacrifice in order to convince his brother of his worth.

THE FLASH, "Fast Enough", May 19, 2015, Actors: Grant Gustin, Rick Cosnett, Carlos Valdes and more, The Scene: Eddie's death & Cisco confronts Wells & Barry says goodbye to his mom & Barry visits his dad, Henry
Justyna K:
This has to be one of my favorite finales of this TV season. There's just so many scenes I could include in this week's article: Barry's goodbye to his mom, all the talks between Barry and both his dads, Cisco confronting Eobard, Eddie's talk with Dr. Stein, the lovely wedding and more. But in the end, I had to choose Eddie's final scene. I absolutely didn't see this coming. When I think about it now, it seems like I should have but still, I missed that and Eddie's decision to take his own life to stop Eobard from ever being born and hurting anyone, just when he was about to kill Barry and all his loved ones, it felt like a punch in the heart. Poor guy. He spent quite a while thinking he's no one and when he finally decided to fight for his happiness and ignore the future, choosing his own path, this happens. Of course there could have been so many different ways to stop Eobard, but the thing is, not for Eddie, not in that moment, when everyone could have been killed. He was a truly good man, a real hero, who dedicated his life to protect others when he became a cop. In the end, he was the one person who could have changed things, the one no one could see coming. And his goodbye to Iris was such a heartbreaking moment. More than that, it's the death that changes everything. If Eddie died, Eobard is never born, never goes back in time, never kills Barry's mom... It's all so impossibly complicated but when the show comes back next season, I don't expect anything to be the same. Kudos to the entire cast & crew for this spectacular finale and the season. Rick Cosnett, Eddie Thawne, you'll be dearly missed!
A Dahne: There were about 5 scenes in The Flash finale that top all other scenes this week for me. Since we can only pick one, I chose a scene I don't think others will. I loved when Cisco confronted Wells about killing him in another timeline. The hurt and betrayal on Cisco's face were so sincere. Carlos Valdes did an amazing job here. I also like the wealth of emotions that flash across Wells' face. He obviously does care about Cisco a great deal, well as much as a sociopath can. It's part of what made Wells the best superhero villain on TV these days. He was complex without being illogical or too over the top. All in all, a fantastic scene in the midst of a great episode.
Sandi: I have loved every scene between Cisco and rfWells so far, and this one did not disappoint either. Lots of geeky moments, from Cisco's questioning of Wells' Costume Ring to the explanation of his future secret identity as Vibe and Wells' involvement in it. Yet the actors still brought the same level of gravitas to the scene that their two previous meetings had. You could feel Cisco's mixed emotional state - hurt, betrayal, wonder and eagerness to understand - while there was no doubting Wells really does feel a fatherly connection that even he doesn't fully comprehend.
Jamie Coudeville: Eddie takes out Wells. At this point I should know that big declarations of love mean someone is going to die very soon. Still, didn't see it coming. His goodbye with Iris broke my heart. I wonder, since his body was thrown into the wormhole, if maybe we'll see him again. Maybe the future can save him.
Nirat Anop: I also loved the speech Henry Allen gave to his son. Every time this father and son meet they share some of the most meaningful moments I have seen on the show. Regardless of his father being in prison they have one of the most heartwarming relationships on TV. "I am in awe of the remarkable man that you are becoming", John Wesley Shipp & Grant Gustin were outstanding. I also loved that Barry called Joe dad too.
Ben L: The interaction with Barry and his mother.

THE MESSENGERS, "Metamorphosis", May 22, 2015, Actors: Jessika Van, J. D. Pardo
The Scene: Koa sees her wings
A Dahne:
I have no idea where Koa fits in this story but I did love the surprise that both she and Raul had when seeing her wings on the screen. She adds an interesting dynamic into the team, which had been gelling pretty well at this point.

YOUNGER, "I'm With Stupid", May 19, 2015, Actors: Hilary Duff, Sutton Foster, The Scene: Kelsey helps Liza cover up her sports injury
A Dahne:
Kelsey helps Liza cover up her sports injury and tells her that each of us have our own deal breakers and that's okay. One of my favorite things about Younger is how they've started showing respect to all their characters, even if they do boneheaded things. In this case, they gave us a brief but sweet moment between Kelsey and Liza. Usually Kelsey is doing dumb stuff like adultery, but here she shows surprising wisdom and acceptance of Liza for who she is.
