Rookie Blue - Open Windows (Season Premiere) - Review

Welcome back to Rookie Blue Season 6! Or as I would like to call it, Season 5B. A lot happened during the previous season of Rookie Blue. 15 got blown up, Andy and Sam were very happy and very much in love, Oliver became a white shirt, Dov and Chloe called it quits, Chris was barely in the season, Holly was leaving for San Francisco and Gail was ready to be a mum. And the biggest cliff-hanger of all, is Marlo really pregnant with Sam’s baby or not?

Let's just address the pregnant elephant in the room. Yes. Marlo is 4 months pregnant. And yes, it is Sam’s baby. I know some McSwarek fans must be disappointed and even slightly miffed over the baby drama, afraid Marlo’s going to ruin their relationship, but I don’t think so. Marlo’s not showing up at 15 to break McSwarek up. She’s there to do her job. She wasn’t going to tell Sam (although he has a right to know), but since she’s going to stick around because of the bombing case, it’s probably wise to let him know before she starts showing. Instead of dwelling on the hate and dislike for this storyline, we should focus on how Andy and Sam are going to cope and move on as a couple. If/when they manage to come out of this mess together, they would be stronger and better than before. What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.

We pick up a month after the bombing, everybody’s back at work like the first day of school. Sam and Andy spent 3 blissful weeks at Oliver’s cabin. Dov has been working with Marlo on closing the case, but we learn that Ted Macdonald wasn’t connected to the bomb and there is a chance it is an inside job. Throughout the episode, we see that Dov and Marlo has established some sort of friendship. It was Dov who found the sonogram last season, he’s the only person in the division to know about Marlo’s pregnancy yet he kept it to himself. I like this friendship, I just hope the writers don’t cross that line. I’m still hoping for Dov and Chloe to get back together.

I might be the minority, but I’m actually pleased that Marlo’s sticking around. Marlo Cruz is a character who deserves to be more than being a part of the McSwarek drama. She’s a pregnant bipolar cop who’s trying to solve probably the most important case this season. Baby drama aside, I’m happy to see Marlo and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for her this season.

And why do I think it’s the most important case? Because my theory is that someone from 15 planted the bomb and the higher ups have something to do with this. Probably Duncan’s stepfather, Commissioner Santana and maybe even Inspector Jarvis.

That’s where Juliet Ward comes in. Turns out, she’s not really a transfer from Vancouver P.D., which also explains the reason behind her bailing on Nick the last time we saw them. I think she's investigating the cops at 15. At the end of the episode, we see her getting into a car with someone I presume to be her handler of some sorts. What do you guys think of my theory?

I hope they delve deeper into police corruption at 15. I want to see the gang sticking together and facing the challengers that would make or break their careers and even their relationships with one another. Will they struggle with power and authority? Will justice be served? It would be a great storyline.

Nick’s training for ETF. It seems like he has made up his mind at the beginning of the episode, but I have a feeling Juliet might be a good enough reason for him to stay. We’ll see how it plays out this season. Nick deserves some happiness.

Finally, a storyline for Chris. He’s doing well and going to meetings, except he’s dating a married cocaine addict, who happens to be the Inspector’s wife. That’s going to be messy. I just hope Chris isn’t going to get hurt or fall back into doing drugs. He deserves to be happy too.

Last season, Gail had gone through some pretty major character developments. She doesn’t do boys anymore and she’s ready to be a mum. That hasn’t changed, she’s still trying to adopt Sophie and although given little screen time this week, Gail delivered my favourite line this episode. “Oh hey, it’s just me, Gail. I’m a nice, single homosexual police officer standing in front of a swing set trying to look both playful yet responsible.” I hope being a mum doesn’t take away her snark.

Case of the week is a touchy one. There’s a sexual predator on the loose breaking into people’s homes. Unfortunately for him and Andy, he targets a cop (Traci) who happened to be spending the night at Steve’s. The suspect got away, but not without a fight from Andy.

This episode touched on rape and sexual assault towards women. As a young woman myself, I’m grateful the show managed to convey the message that it is no woman’s fault if she gets sexually assault in her own home. And always make a police report. It might help the police and stop the next woman from being a new victim.

Naturally, a detective from the Sex Crimes unit takes over the case from the guys at 15 but it doesn’t sit well with them. Taking matters into their own hands despite orders not to, Andy and her fellow cops failed to catch the guy responsible and I don’t know if this is going to stretch out into the next few episodes. I hope so, they need to find him and put an end to it. Hopefully the guy hasn’t skipped town.

Last season, we saw the rookies being preoccupied with their own drama. I think the theme for this season is moving on. Everyone is moving on in different directions, with their relationships, careers and family. What’s going to make this season interesting is how they are going to overcome their obstacles while trying to move on as a person and as a team. The heart and core of the show are the rookies. Since the first season, we’ve seen them grow and evolve together into the people and cops they are now, and I want to see it in the last season, if season 6 is indeed the last.

The 5 rookies are what make the show special (sort of like Grey’s Anatomy) and I really hope we get to see the band back together this season. There are rumours that this might be the last one and I wouldn’t be surprise if it is. I just hope the writers give the characters the endings they deserve.

As for this episode, it didn’t feel like a season premiere. Probably because it wasn’t meant to be one.

What about you? What do you think of the premiere? What do you want to see in the rest of this season? What are your hopes for the characters? Do you think this season should be the last? Leave a comment to let me know!

The U.S. premiere of Season 6 airs on June 25th.

  1. I like them to explain the timeline. How can Marlo only be 4 months along with Sams baby when that alone is the amount of time that played out between 4x13 and 5x11(that's what Tassie Cameron said). Now another 3/4 weeks have past, plus I don't think Sam had sex with Marlo while she was in her manic episode or after that. The whole storyline just doesn't fit. That's what makes me angry the most about it.

If they wanted to give Marlo her own storyline and me not just assiciate her with being an obstacle for Andy and Sam they should've never made her pregnant.

  2. No so fast, it hasn't premiered on ABC yet. Is Canada airing it before ABC again like they did last summer?

  3. I'm always scored when Rookie Blue comes back on. It was a god first episdie that set up lots of stories. I really hope that you are right that Marlo has just come back to do,her job, Andy and Sam are finally or should I say were in a good place and this happens. I hope that Sam doesn't decide to be noble and want t marry Marlo. There is a part of me that this are not quite on the up and up with the pregnancy as we do know how obsessive Marlo is. Could it have been Marlo that planted the bomb. Lots of stories I want to see played out. Thanks for your review.

  4. Well first, how can you or anyone believe the pregnancy timeline? 4
months pregnant is such a joke! Thirteen episodes have passed since Sam
and Marlo were together and then they come back to this episode almost
another month. In normal people's calculation, this equates to at least
7 months pregnant. I love this show but you would think after 5 and
1/2 seasons the writers would have started to sew up the romance and
story lines. Create real excitement for the fans, rather than regress
and throw in such a ridiculous tactic. And Marlo - you are clearly in
the minority on this one. She has no place on this show and only turns
people off. Her story line in season 4 started to affect the ratings.
Why would they bring her back and to this extant. Ridiculous....Don't
you read the feedback from the fans and viewers? I know we get a nice
surprise at the end of this season for Sam and Andy, and I hope Rookie
Blue goes on for more seasons but Marlo needs to be gone for good.....

  5. Yes, you're right. Canada's airing about a month earlier than the U.S.

  6. Man, I would LOVE for them to explain the timeline too! You're right about Marlo. I'm just hoping and still trying to believe in the writers that Marlo's not just an obstacle for Andy and Sam, because it'd be a shame to waste such a good character on relationship drama.

  7. I'm excited when it comes back on too. Mostly because we have to wait so long, haha. Yeah, there are a bunch of storylines I'm excited to see in this season. The episode did set them up pretty nicely. Thanks for reading. :)

  8. I don't like it either. I don't think anybody does. Yes, the timeline might not make sense, but the stories have been written and told, we can only just hope for the best. If the show continues next season, I don't think Marlo would be in it. I'm pretty sure she's in this season because of the pregnancy and to find out who's responsible for the bombing. Once it's settled I doubt she'd be back. That being said, I loved season 4. I think it was one of the strongest season and season 5 fell flat compared to it.

P.S. if you have any questions or doubts about the show you can try tweeting the creators/writers because I think they respond to fans and you might get some answers.

  9. I wish ABC would bring this back sooner instead of waiting for another month.

  10. I don't mind Marlo sticking around, but the baby story is old and boring, Andy and Sam really deserve better than this... The show is already struggling, and this is not helping.... so sad, I used to really love this show.

  11. I hate that the stupid punk cop who is terrible is still there: Duncan. Ugh he is terrible and he is still a lame cop.

I will say I am not mad about Marlo being around either. I kind of like her character. And it doesn't have to be that dramatic over her pregnancy. I can't blame Andy for being surprised, sure, but I think if they just got used to it that it would be like any other relationship where people have a child together but aren't in love or dating: they just parent together. That's it. Andy and Sam could still stay together and share custody of the baby with Marlo (or rather Sam could and Andy would get to see the kid grow up to). Assuming of course the pregnancy goes all good and they don't try to get all dramatic on us by making Marlo take off with the baby, lose the baby or fight for sole custody (which I can't see happening).

Chris is soooo screwed and in a terrible position even though he didn't know so it's not entirely his fault. It's mainly the wifes fault for lying about her marriage or rather not admitting she was married to a captain no less. I hope this doesn't screw Chris up to bad since he seems to have just gotten better and is back at work in routine. I hope it doesn't affect his job but it probably will because I am thinking the boss will find out it is a drama after all.

  12. Me too. Then we can all watch it together at the same time.

  13. Yeah, I gotta agree the show isn't as great as it used to be anymore.

  14. I just can't wrap my head around why the writers would keep Duncan around. The only reason I'd accept is he's going to be involved one way or another in the police corruption/dirty cops at the station, seeing as his stepfather is the commissioner.

Yeah I get Andy's reaction, I just hope she'd process her feelings and communicate with Sam and then work with him to move on from this.

I have a feeling Chris will try to break it off but fail to do so. Like he'd claim he's in love or the inspector's wife would have a hold on him somehow, that sort of thing. I hope it doesn't affect his job too.

  15. Season 4 ep. 12 says it says that Marlo didn't want to see(or come over, whatever) Sam like for 2 weeks.

    Season 5 = 11 episodes = 11 weeks

    Season 6 = 3 weeks vacation

    11+3+2= 16 weeks

  16. Garbage. You have no idea what you are talking about. That storyline did not affect the ratings. Despite what you believe and the handful of McSwarek fans that rehash the same crap on every blog, feed and social media outlet this show and all of its characters are deeply loved. ALL. Do us a favor fact check and grow up.

  17. Can you post this everywhere? Please? I'm so tired of these fans picking apart one of my favourite shows it completely kills it for me.
