Ratings Breakdown:
The two-hour “Survivor” season-ender led CBS to overnight victory on this final night of the traditional (September to May) television season. While its advantage over No. 2 NBC was only two-tenths of a rating point (or four percent) in households, the Eye net’s lead in adults 18-49 (and all the young adult demographics) will be considerably higher.
“Survivor” closed this 30th edition (“World’s Apart”) at an estimated 5.7 rating/9 share in the household overnights from approximately 8-10:10 p.m. Comparably, this was four percent above the 5.5/ 9 in the overnights last week, which translated into 9.61 million viewers and a 2.3 rating/8 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data. The year-ago season finale scored a very similar 5.9/10 (on 5/21/14). While not the best season of “Survivor” creatively, chalk up another season of solid ratings. And the right person absolutely won!
Leading out of “Survivor” was a shortened live reunion show at an estimated 4.5/ 8 from 10:15-11 p.m., which featured the fall 2015 “Second Chance” cast reveal. And the participating returnees (in order of season) are as follows:

In series-premiere news, ABC game show “500 Questions” from Mark Burnett and Mike Darnell began its seven consecutive nightly run (excluding repeats on Saturday and Sunday) with a respectable 3.7/ 7 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, “500 Questions” bested the first half of the two-hour season-premiere of competing “MasterChef” on Fox (2.6/ 4) by a hefty 42 percent, and it should have no trouble ranking second in the hour in adults 18-49 (ahead of older skewing NBC drama “The Mysteries of Laura,” which concluded its freshman season with an above average 5.1/ 8 in the 8 p.m. hour).
Given the competition from “Survivor,” consider this is a positive start for “500 Questions.” While the network, no doubt, was patterning this event type scheduling after former “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” on Aug. 16, 1999, my personal choice would not have been to launch it so close to a big holiday weekend. Translation: lower HUT Levels. That said, keep the expectations low.
Next on ABC were the season-finale episodes of sitcoms “Modern Family” (#2t, 5.4/ 9) and “black-ish” (#3: 3.9/ 6), which will remain intact in the Wednesday 9 p.m. hour (out of returning “The Middle” and “The Goldbergs” next season). One year earlier, “Modern Family” ended the season with a notably larger 7.2/11 in the overnights (on 5/21/14).
At 10 p.m. on ABC was the season-premiere of modest summer entry “Celebrity Wife Swap” (featuring Jackee Harry and Traci Lords) at a distant third-place 2.3/ 4 in the overnights at 10 p.m.
Out of the season-finale of “The Mysteries of Laura” on NBC were the season-ending episodes of also older skewing dramas “Law & Order: SVU” (#2: 5.5/ 9) and “Chicago PD” (#2: 5.1/ 9) from 9-11 p.m., which all are worthy of positive mention for the compatibility. Older viewers need options too!
Elsewhere, the aforementioned two-hour “MasterChef” season-opener on Fox could only muster a 2.7/ 4 from 8-10 p.m. Unfortunately, a 2.7 overnight household rating is unlikely to translate into much in the young adult demo department. And veteran “Supernatural” concluded season 10 on The CW at a typical 1.4/ 2 in the overnights from 9-10 p.m. An encore telecast of “Supernatural” scored a 0.9/ 2 in the 9 p.m. hour.
In late night, it was all about David Letterman, of course, with his final appearance as host of CBS’ “Late Show” franchise at a whopping 9.3/21 in the household overnights. Comparably, this was 365 percent above the 2.0/ 8 on the year-ago evening and 300 percent above the 3.1/ 8 one week earlier. About the Daily Ratings
Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

Modern Family will be down a lot from last year's hyped wedding episode

Well, the summer shows are in practice replacing repeats so as long as CWS>Nashville (R) and 500 Questions > TM(R)+TG(R) it was worth it.

ReplyDeleteThe end result is the same. For them to air TM and TG last night, they would have needed to air additional repeats of those in April, which in turn would have resulted in either TG or Blackish airing an original alone in a sea of repeats at 9h30 that night.
ReplyDeleteThat's low for MasterChef and really low for Celebrity Wife Swap. However, 500 Questions seemed to do OK in its premiere. However, I'd be interested to see the halves as there could be a massive drop off.
ReplyDeleteNBC made a smart choice running a procedural night on Wednesdays. Criminal Minds is weakening and Code Black likely won't be able to find traction Wednesday at 10 PM.
But NBC stills finishes 4th on most Wed
ReplyDeleteThat's where a stronger 8 PM would come into play. If FOX is going to make a horrible decision in keeping Empire at 9 PM, this is where Chicago Fire or Shades Of Blue should enter and give them a boost at 8 PM.

For NBC's sake, I'd hope not. With what they paid to get Jennifer Lopez over, they are banking on her being able to self start.
ReplyDeleteThe season kind of sputtered about. Not enough demon Dean and Mark of Cain storylines. They truly wasted tons of potential. But the acting on this series is always superior, especially the very talented Jensen Ackles. He might be too good for The CW.

ReplyDeleteWow I didn't realise so many reality and competition shows were on last night. I don't watch SPN anymore but going by tumblr and my twitter feed it had a horrible finale, and a bad season overall to according to a lot of people. I'm really interested to see if next season will be the time it's ratings don't rebound.
ReplyDeleteThat lineup has potential, but I'm not that big of a critic on how Chicago Fire is scheduled now. With so many limited series on NBC's schedule, something stale needs to be held back. 2 Wolf shows is enough for the fall.

ReplyDeleteNBCs Wednesday's results (sans Empire and Code Black, which is tracking well) shows why it was not a good idea to keep the night intact next fall. Especially with Laura leading off the night, and potentially going fractional, against the similarly themed Rosewood.

ReplyDeleteIt pretty much the same story, I expect a very low rated summer for them, leading into a distant fourth place (besides Empire). This is not going to be a good year for FOX.
I guess you're right, but it often seems to me that the inarticulate suddenly become articulate... and then there's the editing decisions.

There's definitely producer's influence in what is being filmed and how it is edited. It's not so much "reality" as their skew of "reality".
ReplyDeleteThey're giving it a go it's just moving along very slow. On the broadcast nets I have 5 scripted shows airing over Summer. Which is about half the amount I had during Fall. Then I have a hell of a lot more on cable. The only competition show I'm watching is Britain's Got Talent (I don't like the judges on the American one).

ReplyDeleteThat's sad to hear but not surprising. I guess the comments depend on which fan base hated the show. It's so divided. While I didn't love it, I liked a lot about it. Performances for one. The feel of early seasons, Azazel for another.
ReplyDeleteHalf of the fanbase could be thinking the show is horrible and the other half can be thinking it's the best thing ever. In personally tumblr would be the last place I would base a SPN episode on. lol Only viewers I care about is the one who hold the boxes. It's a wait in see next year.

ReplyDeleteHorrible night for NBC. The WCW block resulted in a year to year loss. Last year's results (per: showbuzzdaily) were: Revolution (1.1/1.1), SVU (1.6/1.6), CPD (1.6/1.6). NBC would be wise to reconsider continuing with their Wednesday block next year.

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't necessarily say so. It is more likely that whatever it was that affected MF also affected Blackish. So I wouldn't say MF is the cause for Blackish being down, but more that both were affected by the same thing. My guess is that there was legitimate confusion with viewers who probably thought last week was series finale for ABC Wednesday.

ReplyDeleteUnderwhelming for NBC finales, Laura is the only one that rose. It's weird that SVU and PD skew so much older compared to last week. Both are up in audience but down two tenths in demo.

ReplyDeleteSupernatural did ok in the middle of all this. Yes it is way down from last year's finale but it didn't blink despite the absence of an original lead-in and a 0.7 is still a big number on the CW land.

ReplyDeleteCarver has set up a potentially good season 11 (and beyond) but I dont trust his ability to deliver when it comes down to it. I think he's lost the show a lot of fans this season and I'm not entirely sure they'll all come back for season 11. I want to have hope that next season will be better but under Carver thats a hard thing to do.

ReplyDeleteSurvivor won't be around forever, but it is incredibly steady. It will be around for 4-6 more years minimum. The show seems to go down with the average ratings for broadcast TV, so it never seems low.

The counter argument is where do you put Laura where it maintains anywhere near its result? Wednesdays are going to get a lot more competitive in the fall. Right now Laura is benefiting from a lack of procedural competition. That is why many, myself included, find Laura's renewal puzzling. The argument can't even be made that it is funneling viewers into the night as Wednesday, as I wrote below, sustained a yearly loss. In fact, even NBC has Laura cancelled in its first draft of the schedule leaked by season-zero.

Carver's inability to tell a story, his vision of the show being more angst/teen drama and fantasy, rather than being rooted in a dark, gritty somewhat realistically world, the complete lack of interest and understanding of the Winchester characters by all of the writers, and the truly poor writing and rehashed stories have lost the show a third of it's audience this season. I have never missed an live airing of an episode in ten years, but I'm out.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping that SPN picks up some viewers over the summer – it's a binge-watch favorite. And maybe the brothers vs. the world setup for Season 11 will draw a few viewers back in. We'll see. SPN has rebounded before when the setup for the new season looked promising. I just hope it doesn't plummet.

ReplyDeleteI love Undateable but Undateable isn't so big that NBC should bend over and renew her for it, in my opinion. Also, at the end of the day, WB wouldn't blackmail NBC per se. If NBC were to say it was Undateable and nothing else or nothing else at all, WB would eventually negotiate on Undateable alone.

ReplyDeleteNBC's last minute acceptance of a deal including Undateable and Laura was independent of their results and more an amalgamation of a bunch of things in their favor. 1) NBC's unwillingness to cancel all their freshman shows 2) Greenblatt's well documented penchant for Messing 3) NBC's desire to see how a live format comedy would perform,which they have been seeking since Hospitality's conception, and its fit within their new "live entertainment" direction and 4) the belief that there was not a single strong candidate within their potential new comedies. Basically, they started to doubt their own abilities after repeated failures.
ReplyDeleteModern Family is not dependent on its lead-in, there is more than enough evidence over the years of this, that is absurd.

ReplyDeleteIf repeat overrun finale (even for 30sec) as it goes usually with Arrow we can have some vewers ( and hopefully demo) adjustment up in first half. Depends of 2digits, how high was that 0.7

ReplyDeleteMF on low 2s?! Masterchef 1.2?! Those are awful drops and they came out of nowhere!
My opinion:
ReplyDelete1) Viewing levels were low +
2) There are synergies from the entire block airing together (which doesn't mean MF is dependent on TG per se, but that it benefits from a better 8pm hour) +
3) [Most importantly] By having the 8pm comedies end last week, there was probably a lot of confusion in terms of that being the finale of the 9pm comedies as well.
The repeat didn't overrun here (CW Philly market) and the 8 pm show usually always does.

ReplyDeleteAdd to that, people were probably grabbing the remote switching back and forth between Survivor and Modern Family.

ReplyDeleteWith comedies, more often, you watch the entire line-up back to back than waiting for the actual time for you to tune in thus casual viewers would tend not to figure quickly if a show they like at a later time is actually a new episode but the shows before it aren't.
ReplyDeleteGive that MF has been extremely stable all spring (right around a 2.8-3.1), and the fall before it, I can only assume that a good chunk of viewers figured it ended last week.
ReplyDeleteMasterchef usually do well during the summer.
ReplyDeleteHowever it was pitted against the finale of a competing reality show so it was a tough choice to make for fans of both shows (and it's certain that they both share an overlapping audience).

ReplyDeleteI usually don't buy it either but it seems it was the case here. It is the most compelling explanation. Certainly more than MF being lead-in dependent, which it has proven time an time again it isn't the case.
ReplyDeleteMF is getting weaker so it makes sense. This was also the first time probably its pilot that it didn't have a comedy lead in.

ReplyDeleteHow do you know? We know as a fact that Modern Family isn't dependent from the last six seasons, but we just don't have that "following-a-flop-but-still-sucessful" data for Blackish.

This year I noticed that a lot of shows with a high youth demographic usually do very bad during breaks in the university schedule. I wonder if Nelson's decision to have boxes in dormitories may skew the results some, although this was a really big drop.
ReplyDeleteModern Family did a 3.7 last year on the exact same week (albeit with a much more hyped and stronger finale) so people do still watch TV in late-mid May.
ReplyDeleteCall it hyperbole if you want but IMO a 2.2 for this year's finale is nothing short of an unmitigated disaster. I already thought next season might be it's first in bubble territory but now if it starts out next season anywhere near 2.2 even being a bubble show might be optimistic.
Yet Modern Family was down single digits this season.

ReplyDeleteIt's no different than the Sony deal in which they had to keep The Night Shift, despite having two medical dramas already. The Mysteries Of Laura is around because WB successfully packaged it with something NBC wanted (a live format with Undateable).
As for the season-zero schedule, it was just a bad leak. Those happen with schedules. The Mysteries Of Laura was there because NBC, like everyone else, thought FOX would be smart enough to put Empire Wednesday at 8 PM. They weren't and NBC will replace it with something over the summer to air in the fall. I'd be very surprised if The Mysteries Of Laura airs a single episode in this timeslot.
It's going to kill in syndication. The old viewership base will be very attractive to cable outlets, which is why they were so willing to attach it to their package with Undateable.
ReplyDeleteWhat NBC should be doing is taking a piece of the production, so that if it gets to syndication, they will have a return on their investment. They let The Mysteries Of Laura go too easily into the package and should have taken part ownership.
That is actually not true. Last year it premiered at 1.5 and that was an outright season low. The show would end up averaging a 1.88 and settling around a 2.0 for most of the season.

ReplyDeleteThe people that I have heard from, those who have been with the show since the Pilot and with whom I have communicated with, are leaving the show after this season. I am one of them. It's apparent the network is trying to get newer viewers, the 15-24 year olds, and the writing reflects that. Maybe they will pick up some of those viewers, but they are a fickle bunch and not the loyalists like the older viewers. I don't expect ratings to ever be above .7 and around 1.75 million viewers. It will be enough to keep it on the air on the CW.
