Great finale. Most of it felt like a harrowing journey into a dark part of the human soul. Look forward to the arrival of Holmes's father. But I'm a bit disappointed that there wasn't any followup to who want Gregson out of the way. And has Holmes actually relapsed by the end of the episode? I can't tell whether he has done that or just fallen into a depression after what he went through.

  2. Same here - I wasn't certain he had relapsed or had lost himself. It was a real downer either way.

  3. Elementary EP saying that Sherlock has lost his sobriety in interview. Not liking this.

  4. Before I vote I have to know, did he use the heroin?

  5. Yes, he relapsed and that's why his father is coming to NYC.

So was there a game changer moment?

That's unfortunate. Sadly, it was just a matter of time before the show was going to take that direction with Sherlock to spice up the drama. I just hoped for a moment that it was nothing more than a tease.

I assume Sherlock's relapse and the impending arrival of Holmes's father are the game changer moments.

  10. Sadly it happens. In my career I've seen even the strongest willed people relapse. It's a never ending battle, and it's shocking how easily you can do it.

  11. I know I had a flicker of hope but the EP said in the interview that we all should have known when Sherlock picked up the box and walked into the tunnel what he was going to do. I really do not like this at all.

  12. Well to me this was OK at best. After all that time for him to relapse why? Not to mention the point of him choosing that path and be forced by it.

Damn that was a sad ending. Why are are my favorite guys relapsing? Sherlock with his drugs Booth(Bones) with his gambling. This is just a series of sad finales. Not good at all.

  14. 1) Sherlock relapsing
    2) Sherlock killing someone

  15. What a finale! Im impressed how great this season was and the finale was a game changer indeed. And I was hoping for a relapse for a long time...
But I have a question: Sherlock really liked Oscar_?

    ReplyDelete
  16. So he killed Oscar? I'm missing something. I mean, it wasn't that obvious, was it?
For me the relapse part was obvious, he picked up the box and went back into the tunnel with it. Pretty safe to assume he used it.

I enjoyed the finale, I am very excited for S4! I voted Great instead of Awesome for one reason though - I wish we've seen more rather than guessing. For example I'd rather Joan found him in that tunnel, or he came home in dirty clothes and she figured it out, or something. I'd love to see their interactions and Joan's reaction explored more. So far it's just a scratch on the surface. I still hope we will see it, maybe in the flashbacks. I loved the flashbacks to London this season, it was awesome. But all in love - great finale!

After sleeping on it, I've decided that Sherlock's relapse was a dose of reality for us. Elementary has never shown Sherlock to be super human, in fact, the exact opposite. He has expressed his less than fulfilled disposition after his nearly 2 year sobriety. He questioned the "beneficial" outcome of the constant struggle. Although stronger willed than most, Sherlock is still a human living with some pretty harrowing demons. The Elementary writers, in my opinion, delivered a realistic view of an addict (be he Sherlock Holmes or Average Joe). They continue to take risks like this and I applaud them. They have remained true to the original take on Sherlock which drew me in from the premier! This season's finale was messy & disturbing. I can't wait to see what's in store for Sherlock and Joan next season!!

  18. They didn't mentioned he had relapsed if i'm not mistaken. The final shot of the episode to me was of him maybe killing or injuring Oscar badly and not taking the drugs he picked up.

  19. It is ambiguous in the episode, but Robert Doherty has said in interviews that Sherlock relapsed. Whether he killed or simply injured Oscar is unknown.

Plot A and B were intricately interwoven and related and very well done. Plot B: Did Holmes take the drugs as Oscar hoped and intended? In the final scene Holmes looks like he is in a drug stupor. Plot A: Finding and saving Alfredo. Don’t you love the division of labor. Watson seeking Alfredo and Holmes seeking Oscar’s sister. Well done.
Addiction is an important issue. Millions have been addicted and at least hundreds of thousands have died. But do we have a bell curve. I have known hereon and cocain addicts that have not used drugs in more than 20 years, with no sponsors and no meeting and no apparent inner struggles as stated by Holmes. But I have also known hereon and cocain addicts that will steal their mother’s jewelry until the day they die. There appear to be a biological component involved.
On one end of the bell curve some people are hooked on the first use, on the other end some people seem to be able to use it and then give it up without any great struggle. The researchers on Elementary seem to do a great job in many areas which enhance the shows interest. I wish they would do some in depth research on this pattern. In Doyle and the British depiction of Holmes’ use of drugs Homes seemed to only use it when he was bored and could leave drugs along when he was involved in a case.
But the key to both plots is shown in Plot A; the desire for someone who has descended to his depth’s to take someone down with him. This is a theme we see played out and life and dramatized in dramas. The villain’s, when he knows he is doomed, the desire to take the hero down with him.
Oscar knows that he bears some responsibility for the death of his sister. As Watson indicated the only other human being he cared about. But like most people in self destructive life style he refuses to take full responsibility for his actions and deflect it onto Holmes who he knows despise his weakness and is determined to show Holmes that Holmes is just as susceptible as he is to a self-destructive life style. There is a psychological term for this which escapes me at this point.
Key words. It’ll be your fault this time, not mine.
I also watch Bones. The same Plot B was put forth in their episode as to Booth’s gambling addiction. In Bones, I got the feeling that Plot B was contrived and distracting from Plot A, and I liked Plot A. Plot B had little relation to Plot A.
There is no contrivance in Elementary. First we know that Holmes has a dark side and Oscar took advantage even though he was aware that Homes could be very violent. In the British version Holmes’ self-designate himself as a sociopath. So his beating of Oscar, possible to death, is consistent. Another reason for beating Oscar is that he endangered one of his best friends for no other reasons to make a point. A friend unconnected to his work and recently unconnected with his addiction. Finally for deliberately endangering his sobriety. Basically attempting to destroy and debase Holmes for no other reason than his own personal psychological benefit. Another title could have been "Designed Descent" but that would have broadcast the plot. I hope Oscar did not win.

  21. I was waiting for the show to tackle Holmes' relapse (you could see it happening really) and now that it happen, I'm screaming! I want my baby to be ok! :(

I hope they don't gloss over his relapse in the next season i.e. having him off into rehab during the hiatus and he's sober when s4 starts. I want to see him high and taking drugs and Joan trying to help him.

So is it confirmed that Holmes killed Oscar?!

What a finale though. So sad. So dark.

  22. I agree. I was not thrilled with this episode at all. Sherlock relapsing seems completely out of character at that point. After seeing all of the shite he saw on his journey, I would've thought he'd be happy his friend was safe yet battling his inner demons.

I get that he'd be torn and even in a state of depression but not completely relapsing. From just watching the ending it wasn't as clear as the EP seemed to assume. Sherlock has had heroine on him before and not used it.

I'm also irritated that they didn't address the Gregson issue at all. Why bring it up last week and then not even touch on it in the season finale? Like you said, mediocre at best.

  23. That's unfortunate. Wish he hadn't mentioned that in his interviews.

  24. I also want to see the drug addiction explored more, and not just with words, but visual evidence.

Still unsure about Oscar myself, guess we'll find out? :D

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh I thought it was more powerful that we only got words and not visual evidence. The whole Sherlock going back into the tunnel was very poignant and I think it was more effective than us actually seeing Sherlock use.

  26. It was very clever in the terms of finale. I am kind of surprised that a lot of people aren't sure if he used or not. Not everyone reads interviews, so I like it because of that. But I'd still want to see more in S4 :)

  27. According to Rob, we will see what happens during those 3 days. Guess we'll see Sherlock use and if Oscar died or not.
