In this episode, “Wentworth Prison,” Jamie meets up with Black Jack again while Claire devises a plan to rescue Jamie from prison.
Previously on Oulander, Claire and Jenny searched for Jamie and were later joined by Murtagh. Murtagh and Claire rode from town to town hoping to draw attention to themselves and bring Jamie to them. Claire learns from Dougal that Jamie was arrested and taken to Wentworth Prison where he has been sentenced to hang. Claire planned to rescue Jamie with the help of some of the Mackenzie men.
Black Jack Randall appears at Wentworth Prison just as the noose is put around Jamie’s neck. He stays the execution and has Jamie removed to a prison cell. When he joins Jamie later, he offers him a deal. He can’t prevent Jamie’s eventual death, but he can let Jamie choose a more honorable way than hanging. Jamie remains steadfast in his rejection of Black Jack’s offer.
Props most definitely go to the actors who have done such a splendid job with a difficult topic. This show has a way of drawing you in and making you really feel for these characters. I was captivated despite cringing a lot during this episode. I wanted Claire to rescue Jamie. I want them to have their happily ever after because I could feel how deeply they really love one another. Toby Menzies is absolutely brilliant as Black Jack and plays the twisted villain so well. Sam Heughan is equally brilliant. Many times I wanted to cry for Jamie. He is so proud, and despite his circumstances he never appears weak. Black Jack and Jamie are definitely well-matched adversaries.
I can’t believe there is only one episode left this season. This second half has really flown by in the blink of an eye.

I was spoiled by my best friend (she's reading the books and she was deeply terrified by these episodes) and I was first surprised, then.. I don't know. I don't know how to feel about it. Seriously. Many congrats to the actors because it requires some huge balls.

I haven't read the books, but I've gotten advance word that the last two episodes of the season--beginning with tonight's "Wentworth Prison"--as EXTREMELY gruesome, brutal, and horrifying. Since that's not my cup of tea, I'm planning on foregoing these episodes until after I've read the reviews to see what others think.
ReplyDeleteBTW, I'm from the Alfred Hitchcock school of film-making; and Hitchcock always believed that you did NOT have to show violent images to make the point. I've been loving Outlander all season long, and I'd hate for it to take a turn towards the Game of Thrones shock-'em style. If that's where Outlander is going, then they've lost a fan.
I so agree on the Hitchcock front. Personally, I find leaving things up to the imagination can be even more terrifying in the long run. I, too, hope Outlander doesn't turn too gruesome. Thanks for the heads up about the last two episodes for those of us who haven't read the books -- I think I may also wait until others watch it.

ReplyDeleteKnowing about Wentworth going in, I was braced for this episode...and while I still shed a tear for Jamie and Claire during the "surrender" scene, I was surprised (relieved, but surprised) that they didnt reach the most gruesome part of Jamie's Wentworth tale. I am hoping they just go ahead and skip over/imply it (though this show doesnt imply things often...) and was ready to sort of get that part "overwith"...you know? Now I have to dread the next episode as well.... :( I think being braced for the worst, made what happened in this ep, not as awful as it could have been.
