Outlander - The Watch - Advance Preview

In this episode, “The Watch”, Jamie is put into a precarious situation when visitors arrive at Lallybroch. Meanwhile, Jenny goes into labor.

Previously on Outlander, Jamie and Claire arrived at Lallybroch where Claire met Jamie’s sister, Claire, and her husband, Ian. Jamie’s memories haunt him as he and Claire settle into life at Lallybroch. Jamie feels responsible for his father’s death and shares with Claire what Black Jack wanted from him. Jenny also blamed Jamie for their father’s death until she sees the scars on his back from his imprisonment. Jamie and Jenny have a heart-to-heart and Jamie assures her the only person responsible is Black Jack.

The previous episode left off with a gun being held to Jamie’s head by visitors who arrived at Lallybroch. Quickly it is revealed that they are The Watch. Jenny tells them that Jamie is her cousin, Jamie MacTavish, to hide his real identity. Jamie is angry when he learns that Jenny and Ian have made a deal with The Watch. Ian assures Jamie that the leader isn’t terrible and isn’t as hard on Lallybroch as he is with other estates. Jamie’s real identity is threatened when someone from Jamie’s past arrives at Lallybroch.

Meanwhile, Jenny’s water breaks and she goes into labor. Claire realizes that the baby is breech but she is unable to get the baby to turn. The midwife has been called away so Claire has to help Jenny through her labor and delivery. They talk about Jamie’s family, and Jenny tells Claire that her mother died in childbirth.

This was another fantastic episode, but really aren’t they all? I really liked how this episode paralleled Jamie and Jenny’s difficult circumstances. Both of their lives were hanging in the balance in this episode. And the suspense really built as the episode went on. It is these types of episodes that make me really glad that I haven’t read ahead in the book yet because I really enjoyed the suspense and not knowing what the outcome would be.

Another focus in this episode is the relationship between Ian and Jamie and the growing one between Claire and Jenny. I liked how it was mentioned Jamie sees Ian as a brother. To parallel that, Claire and Jenny are bonding and becoming really close like sisters. Jenny and Claire also reminded me of Claire and Geillis especially in the episode when they were on trial. I love Claire’s relationship with Jamie, but I also enjoy seeing her bond with other strong females. Jenny’s labor affects Claire on a personal level which leads to a revelation and a sweet discussion with Jamie.

The episode leaves with an even bigger cliffhanger than last week’s. Things are really starting to build as we get closer to the end of this first season.

Tune in tonight at 9PM on Starz to see “The Watch”.
