Outlander - To Ransom a Man's Soul (Season Finale) - Advanced Preview

Outlander Reviews TPIn this episode, “To Ransom a Man’s Soul”, Jamie is rescued from prison. Claire fears that Jamie’s wounds are deeper than she can heal.
Previously on Outlander, after learning that Jamie is at Wentworth Prison, Claire desperately tries to save him. Jamie meets up with Black Jack again when Black Jack arrives in time to prevent Jamie’s hanging. Black Jack offers Jamie an alternative death to hanging if he is willing to let Black Jack have his body. Jamie steadfastly refuses to relent until Black Jack catches Claire in Jamie’s cell. To protect Claire, Jamie relents and tells Black Jack that he can do whatever he wants and he won’t resist.
A crafty plan is successfully surprises Black Jack and the British, and Murtagh, Rupert, and Angus are able to find Jamie and rescue him. They find sanctuary at a nearby abbey where Claire quickly sets to working on Jamie’s physical wounds. Yet it is difficult to save a man who doesn’t want to be saved.
Jamie’s ordeal has broken him, and he has reached a point where he wishes for death. When the episode opens, Jamie reminds Black Jack that he owes him. Before Black Jack can follow through on his word, the disturbance happens that frees Jamie from prison. Jamie battles shame and guilt despite Claire’s care.
This episode was as equally disturbing to watch as the previous one. And without having read this far in the book, I truly wasn’t sure what the outcome was going to be. Sam Heughan has done a terrific job showing just how broken Jamie is in this episode. He has been through so much, and it is so easy to see why he’d welcome death as a reprieve. The hardest part for me is seeing Jamie, who has been a survivor and maintained his jovial spirit, lose that. He survived his ordeal, but it has changed him.
And Claire never gives up and continues fighting no matter the odds she faces. That is what I love about her character. Her optimism and spirit was a ray of light in this episode. Repeatedly she has refused to let those around her give up when they felt the cause was hopeless.
The cast, crew, writers, and everyone associated with this show deserve all the recognition, awards, etc that they will hopefully receive. I really appreciated that they never held any punches when it came to telling the story despite it being quite disturbing at times to watch. I’ve only read the first half of the first book, but I found that the show remained true to the book. And any changes that were made only enhanced the story and made for better television. That is very hard to do when adapting from a much-loved source.
Sadly this is the last episode of this season, but thankfully there is another season where Claire’s story will continue.
Tune in tonight at 9PM on Starz to see the season finale, "To Ransom a Man's Soul".
The Jamie rape scenes were horrifying to watch but what was worse was to see Black Jack take his soul and his heart. The psychological torture he endured was almost to much to watch. Sam and Tobias were amazing with very difficult material. This was something I've never seen on television before.
ReplyDeleteCan I ask something?
ReplyDeleteHow much are they graphic? A LOT?
Thank you for your replies, guys!
Can't wait to see that! Great advanced preview !
ReplyDelete11-16 (Worst part) 29-30.30, and 41.25-44.25. (I posted this on Twitter yesterday)
ReplyDeleteThere's no fade to black when it comes to some of the scenes. This show has always seemed to tackle the difficult scenes head on and not leaving it up to anyone's interpretation to what exactly happens. If you've found those scenes difficult, then skip the times that Robert posted. I wouldn't skip the whole episode though because they really are only a small portion of the episode. And there are some truly beautiful and powerful scenes in this episode particularly between Jamie and Claire. And yet if you can tolerate those scenes, I'd definitely try to watch them. Sam Heughan really is brilliant in this episode as is all of the cast.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'll check your tweets :-D
ReplyDeleteThank you so, Robert.
I'm a Daugher of Anarchy (remember? XD) and I'm an old Oz fan. If you ever watched Tom Fontana's show, you know what I'm talking about.
I'll be able to handle it
(I can't say so for my best friend ah ah! She told me that she will skip the whole hour)
No big deal for me. Thanks :-)
ReplyDeleteHuge congratulations to Tobias and Sam, already. I really adore Menzies (he's fabulous) and I'm starting to like Heughan a bit more.
no big deal. scenes were fine. some people just have weak stomachs
ReplyDeleteanyone who would honestly think jamie is gay is quite a fool.
ReplyDeleteenjoyment of a sexual ACT does not determine sexual ORIENTATION. many
men would not admit so, but if they received oral sex from a bottom boi,
who does it 'properly', they would likely enjoy it just as if it was a
woman doing it. that does not make them 'gay'. being gay is the DESIRE
TO BE WITH only men, including finding them ATTRACTIVE etc. what we feel
during sexual pleasure is the body's NATURAL response to enjoyable
stimuli. and when ALREADY AROUSED, the body is more receptive of
pleasurable stimuli. there have even been many cases of women feeling
pleasure and even having orgasms while being raped. THIS DOES NOT
NECESSARILY MEAN they 'liked' being raped. but as much as she may
resist, if the cauc is fat and they are wet, there is likely little they
can do to stop feeling pleasure when they're being stuffed. bottomline
is, there is a lot that goes into pleasure and it has little to do with
sexual orientation. what IS IMPORTANT is that victims, such as in
jamie's case even niyla styers enjoying being eaten out, no be made to
feel guilty because they 'enjoyed' it. their significant others need to
try to understand that it was simply a physiological response and not
dare claim that it's something they (victim) would like happen again.
claire did the right thing in showing jamie she did not care in the
least.

claire did the right thing by showing jamie she did not care in the
least that he enjoyed being bullered
loved how meaty & juicy this season was. so thick and rife with
tension that it left you gripping and clinging to the edge of your seat.
If you ever watched Oz or Sons Of Anarchy, there's no need to hide under a table ah ah XD
