Outlander - The Search - Advance Preview

In this episode, “The Search,” Claire and Jenny attempt to find Jamie after learning that he has been captured by the British.

Previously on Outlander, the truth about Jamie’s identity was threatened when the British deserter, Horrocks, arrived at Lallybroch to meet with The Watch. Ian intervened and killed Horrocks when he blackmailed Jamie. Jamie confessed to the leader of The Watch about his identity when he questioned the circumstances around Horrocks’ disappearance. Given no other choice, Jamie agreed to ride along with The Watch once while they planned to ambush the British. Meanwhile, Claire helped Jenny with the difficult breech delivery of her daughter. Afterward, they learn that the British have taken Jamie.

The search for Jamie is on when Claire and Jenny depart Lallybroch seeking his whereabouts. Soon they find someone who may have some knowledge of Jamie. Claire learns how far she’d go to find Jamie. They learn that Jamie has escaped his captors. When Jenny has to return to Lallybroch to care for her daughter, Claire continues the journey with Murtagh.

Murtagh devices a plan that he hopes will bring Jamie to them. He and Claire go from town to town seeking news of anyone who has seen Jamie without any luck. Frustrations are high between Murtagh and Claire when their plan doesn’t appear to be working. After Murtagh opens himself up to Claire, he assures her that she isn’t the only one who loves Jamie. Eventually they do learn where to find Jamie.

There are moments in the second half of this episode that had me tearing up. The one thing that is really clear is how much Claire loves Jamie. And she is really afraid that she isn’t going to see him again. Caitriona Balfe as always does an excellent job portraying Claire. She really brings the character to life and gives a very convincing performance. It has only been 7 episodes since Jamie and Claire got married, and yet it is completely believable that they feel so deeply for one another. It amazes me that it is so believable in such a short span of time.

I loved all the time that Murtagh and Claire spent together. At first it is light and I was laughing out loud a few times at their antics. And then things got serious, and they had a real heart-to-heart. As much as I love Claire and Jamie’s dynamic, I also love how rounded out the other characters are. They make the show that more rich. And just as I was thinking we haven’t seen some people in a while, they show up in this episode.

Events are really kicking into gear as this season approaches the end. I both want to know what will happen and yet dread it at the same time after hearing a little from people who’ve read the book.

Tune in tonight at 9PM on Starz to see “The Search”.
