Orphan Black - Scarred by Many Past Frustrations - Advance Preview
May 16, 2015
Orphan Black Reviews ROOrphan Black will continue its third season this Saturday on BBC America with an all new episode titled "Scarred by Many Past Frustrations". This episode will mark the mid season, time has passed so quickly. I can’t believe we’re already in the middle of season three. It has been such a great ride for now, the addition of the Castor clones and the new directions for Allison and Cosima really gave a new and interesting dynamic to the show.
I like this season way better than last year. The tension is way more higher with Dr Coady and the male clones than with Dyad and Rachel. It’s a complete different universe, with the male clones and their closed and hierarchic relationships.
The quest for the original samples has always been one of my favorite story in Orphan Black. I was so thrilled last week with the discovery of Johanssen’s baby. It'll open new horizons for the clones, but getting the original DNA and studying it will take lot of time so in the meantime, Coady and her clones will work on Helena and Sarah, as they’re now their prisoners. Sarah will finally meet Virginia Coady and she will make it clear why she’s so interested in her sister and her.
Finally in "Scarred by Many Past Frustrations", Helena will have interaction with one of her sisters, Sarah. Helena had been kept alone for the four first episodes, with only the scorpion as a friend and of course her captivity has affected her. It’s not the first time Helena has been locked up and tortured, so it might bring bad memories. Her reunion with Sarah won’t be as sweet as I expected. Remember Helena knows Sarah was the one who gave her up to Castor… So if you expected sweet and happy reunion between the seestras, well, lower your expectations. Helena won’t be friendly the first time she’ll see Sarah.
And here’s a list of what to expect from "Scarred by Many Past Frustrations" :
- We haven’t seen the last of Gracie ! She was cast out by her family, and so she will turn to someone we know for help. Honestly, I’ve never expected to see more of her, I thought her story ended with the loss of her baby. But the writers are planning something new, very interesting and quite shocking for the Prothelean girl. You won't see this one coming.
- One clone won’t show up during "Scarred by Many Past Frustrations" and another will have 48 hours of free time.
- Helena has a new plan and it will involve butter.
- Cosima will have her very first internet date ! Of course she’ll be anxious and nervous about it, anything can happen with those kind of dates (I know something about it…) but it will be actually quite surprising and not that bad. Two things I really didn't expect will happen during that date.
- Paul will be back and he will have a talk with Sarah about what he's done and what she's done. Paul always wants to make things clear to Sarah, we will understand more his actions. But still, I kinda hate him for being Castor and locking them up…
- Helena’ special friend will be back ! It will lead to some funny moments with Helena talking to him and Sarah being totally lost.
- Sarah’s first meeting with Dr Coady and other Castor doctors will go in a very Sarah Manning way. Actually, it made me think about the premiere when Allison played Sarah at Dyad, she was really in the character.
- Parsons will be mentioned several times, and we'll see him too.
- Sarah will learn what Helena did to Parsons, and she will tell Helena about their brothers. But will Helena believe her ?
- Sarah’s disappearance will make her friends and family worry.
- Mark will be questioned by his superiors about his wedding ring and his tattoo. He better has good explanations to give them because Coady will be suspicious of his activities back at the farm.
- One character will make a surprising and shocking choice.
- The sisters will prove they can be very resourceful together, and by themselves too. We've never doubted it but Castor will learn it.
- Felix and Mrs S will spend much time together in "Scarred by Many Past Frustrations" and Mrs S will shed some light on her past. Her revelation will touch Felix and it will change what he assumed of her. If you’re a huge fan of Mrs S and Felix as I am, you will love their scenes. I'm so glad we got to see more of their relationship.
"Scarred by Many Past Frustrations" will be another epic and intense episode of Orphan Black. Sarah and Helena will be prisoners at the Castor base, they will do their best to work together to escape Castor. Sarah and Helena always have the most complex and interesting clone relationship of the show, "Scarred by Many Past Frustrations" will really focus on that.
Also, for once, the episode will give the spotlight to Mrs S and Felix and their fun and dynamic mother/son relationship. Well, "Scarred by Many Past Frustrations" will explore those different relationships, particularly focused on how the past has influenced our beloved character.
Are you excited about "Scarred by Many Past Frustrations" ? Are you thrilled or scared of Sarah and Helena locked up at the Castor base ? Hit the comments !
And finally some quotes from "Scarred by Many Past Frustrations" :
"I'm not someone you can fight"
"Not so smart after all ?"
“Why are being so nice to me ?”
“Maybe you’re next”
“I’ll show you how it’s done”

Thanks again for the great preview but " Remember Helena knows Sarah was the one who gave her up to Castor" isn't right. It was Mrs. S. Poor Helena just think it was Sarah because "Mother" told her so.
ReplyDelete"Sarah’s first meeting with Dr Coady and other Castor doctors will go in a very Sarah Manning way."
ReplyDeleteI'm so looking forward to that!!
Why so many people write 'sestra' as a 'seestra'?
ReplyDeleteYes we know that but Helena doesn't it yet, she just assumes it was Sarah for now ;)
ReplyDeleteIt'll be hilarious. I love badass Sarah :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Romain.
ReplyDeleteI am excited to see what they have in reserve for Gracie and Ksenia Solo.
So no Alison ? I rather having one less clone during an episode than having too much in one episode. And Orphan Black episodes are always well filled.
I am really liking the boy clone storyline too.
They are what Sarah and the girl could have been. Biologically there are the same being and were raised in the same environment therefore they should be the same but they were raised together, that's an other factor. Nontheless they stays way more alike than the sisters who despite being biologically the same have been raised in entierely differents environments and are so different from each other.
So I wonder... Why is Mark different from is brothers? Why ?
But not the whole episode I hope? The twins are never stronger as when the are together.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to this episode! I'm especially curious what the Scorpion may have to say about Sarah to Helena! And really excited about this Gracie revelation and looking forward to meeting Cosima's new love interest, could be healing...
ReplyDeleteI also just caught you're previous review fro the last episode yesterday and commented on it! I think one of our clones has a direct connection to Project Castor. I'll just take that part I wrote and repost it here so you don't have to go back:
""Sarah and Cosima found out Johanssen was Dr Hendrix's assistant and he stole the Castor original sample…" -Your Review Quote
So I received the third issue of the Orphan Black Comic, which is Alison centric!. A little chunk of it is a flash back of her dating Donnie in collage and telling her parents (her mother briefly appears!!!), that she wants to Marry Donnie. Interestingly her parents tell her she must take their family name, and she says of course, that is why she loves him. Donie is bit reluctant and argues with Alison's father about it--they talk about how Donnie will learn what "battles" to pick and Alison assures him this is for the best, so that her parents will pay for everything!--this also just so happens right after Donnie signs up for "LIfe Science" to be Alison's monitor. So Hendrix is Allison's family name and not Donnie's and I find it really suspicious now that we have this "Dr. Hendrix" who worked on Project Castor. Is "Hendrix" really a coincidence???....
Alison also happens to be using the "soap" selling as a cover. So I wonder if her mother's "Bubble's" business is actually a front/ a shell company for something relating to all the clones?? (Soap and bubbles go hand in hand as in: cause and effect or in terms of size of business, little soaps are a microcosm of bubbles) I kind of have this theory that the unique patient code that separates their DNA by a small fraction, could be someone else's DNA, meaning they each have a piece of someone else uniquely embedded in them to make them more individual, but also connect them to people we may know in the show?! Sarah sometimes is just so much like Mrs. S that I don't always fully buy that it's purely nurture or empirical. And Cosima was so much like Ethan Duncan..."

I think this will turn around at the end of the season though---I suspect that whatever is going on with Delphine, Ferdinad (James Frain is just too good to waste), his body guard we haven't met yet, Dr. Nelson, Perhaps other members of DYAD/Topline, let alone this back story on Helsinki, could come back and bite us! XD
Thanks again Romain! Saturday can't get here soon enough!!!!!
"So I wonder... Why is Mark different from is brothers? Why ?"
ReplyDeleteSuch a good question! From what we know, what separates him seemingly so far is being separated from his brothers for, what might be, a longer period of time, and also being exposed to other people, who are not his brothers.
Then we have the physiological...
I sort of have this theory that the unique Patient Sequence on the Leda clones could be unique DNA sequences from specific doners, which are characters we meet through out the series. Perhaps the Castor Clones do not have this patient/unique code to individualize them a bit more and this is one reason why they have their 'glitches' and that perhaps makes them easier to psychologically manipulate into a 'hierarchy' system, in which they are designed to keep each other in line--like drone bees centering around a Queen/Mother....
Of course then if we factor in the "self aware" aspect, then you can see a link between them and Rachel as well, which could also mean a lot of things, but won't be anything concrete until we either learn more about Rachel's upbringing (specific conditioning involved to create memory loss??? or traumatic event(s)? or if she was a decoy to protect Cosima?).
At any rate, Mark has not shown glitches, has an ability to think for himself (although that might short lived depending on if he is playing his brother now or not), and he can love other people...
A crazy sci-fi thought to put out there, is if the Tattoo is more than symbolic apart of psychological conditioning and it's ink is kinetic or acts as a tracking devise. But I doubt it! :D
Sarah and Cosima found out Johanssen was Dr Hendrix's assistant and he stole the Castor original sample…"
ReplyDeleteExcept, this is just a typo... Johanssen was Dr Duncan assistant.
Oh Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI still think there could be a shell company--they're too rich and the comic went out of it's way to establish a link between Donnie's life science assignment and him becoming apart of the Hendrix family and having him be a little threatened by juxtaposing those scenes back to back...I was just taking Roman's word for it, -next time I will check myself. For some reason, I didn't remember Duncan being apart of Project Castor too.
Sorry I'm so bad with names :/
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for Dyad to confront Castor. But I think the writers have found a very exciting way to tell the Castor story in the first part of the season, it felt less exciting last year with Dyad and Rachel. Now, we know more about Castor and all, it's time for Delphine and Marion to come back. I'm pretty sure the clone baby will interest them too.
ReplyDeleteI really need to get those Orphan Black comics ! I'm not really into comics, but maybe I can make an exception for Orphan Black :)
Yes Allison won't appear but honestly, the episode is so great and well done that I only realized she was missing when I wrote the preview :)
ReplyDeleteAs for Mark, I think he just wants to live a regular life. He might be bored and unhappy with his life as a military, plus he is in charge of his brother so the relationships are different. He's a bit more than just their brothers, he's their superior too. Mark probably worked closer with Dr Coady and he watched how ruthless she can be. There will be a scene in this episode between Coady and Mark, and clearly, they don't share the same affection that Coady and Rudy.
You'll see ;) Do you think Helena would trust Paul's words over Sarah's ?
ReplyDeleteThey're very short even for comic standards, but it's still kind of nice to see little bits of back story and 'off screen' moments mixed into some of the events of the first season , let alone the timing of their release in relation to where the show is. (I seriously died when I read Helena's issue and saw the Scorpion in it and then suddenly the 3.01's poster featured it, and then it appeared in the episode!! Crazy!)
ReplyDeleteI hadn't been into comics myself since I was a tween, but in the past 5-10 years or so, I found between the art and what kinds of/how stories are told seem to be expanding and I enjoy them more than I did when I was kid. - And I think it's especially nice to have little collectible things that tie into a favorite TV show! XD
No, of course not. Sarah is the most important person in Sarahs live.
