Once Upon a Time - Operation Mongoose Part 1 & 2 - Review: "The show lives up to its potential"
May 12, 2015
Once Upon A Time PB ReviewsI’m going to be honest with you: Season 4 is my favorite season of Once Upon a Time. I can already hear the uproar of the fans who hold a candle for the first season and who say it can’t be beaten; I beg to disagree. While season 1 was pretty fresh and innovating, season 4 has done a big development of characters and has gone through some really creative directions, while delivering great humor. I understand the season 1 nostalgia, but I’m really glad OUAT evolved and became what it is now: one of the most entertaining shows on TV. And by the way season 4 ended, it looks like the show will stay on that path.
The one criticism about this finale I can already see coming is saying that it is essentially the same thing as the season 3 finale. And you are not wrong, the similarities are obvious. But you know what? It doesn’t matter, because the finale is crazy fun! We got time to enjoy the role reversal and we got our first steps on season 5. Every single step of the way in this finale was truly great for me.
Visiting this alternate universe in which the hero and the villains roles have shifted is pretty fun as it allows to see sides of the characters we wouldn’t see otherwise. For instance, it’s pretty darn amusing to see Snow White playing The Evil Queen and Charming being his forced servant. It pushes new dynamics that are fresh and pretty fun to watch.
I have to give it to Jared S. Gilmore for being able to anchor the whole finale; he is the weakest link acting wise on the show, but he has steadily improved. While some of his scenes are still unconvincing, for the most part he has grown into a more believable actor, and I foresee that he will only get better and better.
Talking of which, it’s nice that for once Henry has the spotlight, as he is usually a character that is either forgotten or not used as well as it should (Neverland, anyone?). Just like on season 1, he is the only one who knows what’s going on in this world and he is the only one there who can make sure things change back to normal. It’s a race against the clock and Henry has to make a whole journey to change things backs to the way they were.
It’s interesting how his relationship with Regina hits the reset button and how they quickly develop a rapport even while Regina only wants to leave Henry behind; the more time they spend together the more chemistry these two characters have. Lana and Jared become a great team, and Lana is able to draw the best acting bits from Jared. Having spent so much time together on the show certainly shows when they share scenes, and these one are especially interesting since they are creating a whole new dynamic.
Regina is in the same place Emma was on season 1, with a kid behind her telling her to believe. It’s really interesting to see because this whole season Regina has undergone a redemption arc that has essentially left her on the heroes side, and now she gets to be the savior, without really knowing it. It’s fitting and Lana Parrilla, as usual, nails it.
The finale explores plenty new dynamics: we get to see Rumple as the light one, and the author gets him to admit his true nature, but we get to see how conflicted he is and interestingly he sways to the darkness in the end. Robin Hood is under Zelena’s spell before realizing she’s not the one for him, and he gets to be Regina’s rival for a while. Black Beard controls the Jolly Roger, Hook is a coward, Emma is trapped and she is guarded by Lily.
All of these new dynamics make for more than enough material for half a season and the show could have had fun with it for a while, so it’s a bit of a shame that we only get this alternate universe for 2 episodes. Every actor seems to be having fun playing new sides of themselves, and it should be. It’s pretty fun to watch as they say lines they would never say otherwise.
But the finale also offers opportunities for character exploration, most notably Emma, who after being captured and watch Hook die, she gets to tell Regina that she was always afraid of getting close and she never had the chance to tell Hook that she actually did love him. It’s a beautiful moment that showcases how Emma has become able to open up with Regina, and even while she doesn’t remember her, Regina does feel for her, and her words inspire her to stop Robin Hood’s wedding with Zelena.
Which brings us to OUAT’s best choreographed sword fight ever. Emma vs Rumple has to be the best sword fight the show has ever made; the movements flow nicely and the pace feels natural, which makes it entertaining to watch even while short.
Emma gets beaten and Regina sacrifices herself to save Henry, which makes Robin Hood get out of the chapel to check on the injured Regina, making Zelena become green of jealousy (literally).
For a moment there Isaac thinks he has won, that everything will stay the same and he gets to be rich and famous, but then Henry goes for the quill and becomes the next author.
This is a natural progression and a great place to put Henry as a character. He gets to save everybody by destroying Isaac’s fiction and he becomes immensely powerful.
And with great power, comes great responsibility, which is essentially what The Apprentice says to him when he says that he has to resist the temptation to use the quill.
Henry decides no one should have that much power and he breaks the quill, but he is still the author and I'm wondering if he could get another quill later on and if he could fall into temptation. If so, I’ll be more than happy that Henry gets more layers and become more human by deciding to make adjustments of his own, but that’s for the show to decide. He has a great deal of power right now - quill or no quill, he is still the author -, and it’ll be interesting how the show manages that.
The episode allows for many of our characters to be on a nice place: Lily stays put on Storybrooke to find about her father, Regina decides to deal with Zelena’s pregnancy and be happy with Robin, and even Rumple gets a pure heart by pulling the darkness out of him.
Now the cliffhanger of having Emma becoming the dark one is great not only because of the storytelling possibilities it brings, but also because it is a development that came from love. She made a promise to Regina to give her a happy ending and as she has come too far to lose it all, Emma decides to take in the darkness for her, becoming the dark one instead of her.
That’s love; I don’t mean it in a shipper way, I mean it in a way that Emma simply cares too much about her, she’s probably the closest friend she has ever had, and she is not letting her fall when she can do something about it. That makes the sacrifice all the more poignant. And it makes the following storylines all the more interesting since Emma is going to be the most powerful character on the show besides Henry, as she now has her standard magic + the dark one magic. Saving her is not going to be an easy feat.
But that makes season 5 all the more promising!
This season has grounded OUAT in the way that it made its hero character more complex and more interesting, allowing for much more interesting dynamics with the already complex villains on the show. It has allowed for depth and character development, while also bringing great entertainment via lines and references, and as a whole it took a creative turn that revitalized the show and proved how much it has to offer. And I’d say it has plenty to offer; this is why OUAT is among my favorite shows, because its creativity allows for amazing turns.
Episodes Grade: A
Frozen Arc: B+
Heroes and Villains Arc: A
Season 4 as a whole: A-
Stray Observations:
-So ABC had me watching 3 straight hours of television. My head ached, but after the amazing season finale and the very satisfying Revenge series finale I can say this: I regret nothing!
-It never ceases to amaze me how The Apprentice shows up everywhere.
-The process of choosing a new author is remarkably similar (if not outright based on) to the process of choosing the Dalai Lama.
-Isaac prefers this world with room services and indoor plumbing. I honestly can’t see myself living in the Enchanted Forest either!
-Let’s assume that Isaac wrote fast because of magic, otherwise Emma and the rest would have caught up with him pretty quickly.
-Henry walking alone in the streets had a vibe of 28 days after. Oh, and his driving lessons with David payed off.
-If Henry didn’t go to the Enchanted Forest because he was born in this world, then Neal shouldn’t have gone either, which raises the question: who was taking care of him while this was going on?
-Isaac: “You don’t have to be faster than the ogre, just faster than the other guy.”
Ok, who else felt a TVBTN vibe here? Anyone?
-Rumple: “Good deeds come with no price.”
That is so weird to hear coming from him!
-Love to see Robin Hood and Regina as competing bandits! Such an amusing dynamic.
-Grumpy as he smacks Isaac: “Hi, ho, boys, it’s time to work.”
-Evil Snow: “Long live Regina? Not very likely”
Ginnifer Goodwin’s nonchalant voice killed me. Spot on performance!
-Evil David: “You don’t have to yell Snow, I will always find you.”
Evil Snow: “You will always find me, what?”
Evil David: “I will always find you… your majesty.”
-Even while posing as a good person, Zelena always has a creepy look on her face.
-Seeing Emma so haggard while she was trapped on the tower was pretty affecting.
-I have bragging rights as I said from almost the beginning of the season that Henry would wind up being the author at some point!
-The Dark Swan rises for season 5! God! I want it already! See you next season guys :)
-Subtle brag: I made a much better job bringing the reviews on time this season. I'll keep it up ;)
Forgot to include in my review:
ReplyDelete-Will Scarlet still serves NO purpose whatsoever: I hope season 5 will fix it, but at this point I'm starting to believe that he is just a living reminder that OUAT in Wonderland happen and nothing else.
-Snow has a good moment in which she tells Isaac he became a villain when he tried to get his happiness in expense of everyone else; that's something to consider, you can't be truly happy by hurting everyone else, because love is part of all happiness, and if there's no one to love you (in a romantically, friendhsip or familial way), you simply can't be truly happy.
I really liked this episode. I loved Hook as a coward that was the cutest thing I have ever seen haha I would have loved to see more of the world in the book and in some scenes the acting was a bit off in my opinion. But I really liked it and I do like that Emma is the Dark One now and I really hope we see her in the Enchanted Forest as the Dark One like Rumble with his greenish skin but does that mean next season is just rescue Emma Mission and Camelot? Didn't we already have Excalibur? idk great Review and Happy Hiatus everyone hahahahhhha.......:(
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review :) I didn't like the finale or 4B as much you did, don't get me wrong, it was a brilliant story and great acting but I found 4B and the finale really predictable and it took away most of the impact for me.
ReplyDeleteDidn't Henry lose the ability to change things when he broke the pen? Otherwise that entire gesture was kind of pointless.
"Henry walking alone in the streets had a vibe of 28 days after. Oh, and his driving lessons with David payed off."
I thought the exact same things lol, the music that played while Henry was walking through town was so good!
I'm still extremely not into Hook or his relationship with Emma, hopefully with Emma gone he'll interact and develop relationships with other characters and stop making all his actions revolve around Emma.
I really liked Jared in the finale as well, his acting has improved so much but Jennifer Morrison has been the weakest actor imo since season 2, it was Jared for me in season 1. JMo seems to get worse imo each season, maybe everyone else is just getting better.
I've no idea what to expect from next season but I'm looking forward to it! Now that the season is over here is my new ranking of favourite to least favourite season:
4A>3B>1>>4B>>>>>3A>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>2
4B did have one of my favourite episodes of the series, Cruella's episode (don't remember the name) was one of my favoirites, largely due to Victoria's acting.
That's ok, to each his own. At least S4A was a big catch for you, and it seems you still enjoyed 4B :).
ReplyDeleteMorrison gets the job done, but after seeing Abby Ross stepping up as a young Emma I honestly would like for her to step it up. During the finale she made a much better job bringing Emma's vulnerabilities to the surface.
And Henry broke the pen? I was watching from a live streamer, so maybe the scene froze and I missed it. I'll check it out.
I expected this review yesterday, but I'm glad U took time and let everything settle in. Great review ^^
ReplyDeleteI'm like season 4B, 4A had some flaws and I would've constructed it differently. But I hope for an Elsa guest appearance in season 5 and help in the search for Emma and Merlin.
People say there were a lot of predictable things with Author Henry, Emma The Dark One and Merlin, but all those predictable events were pulled off in a majestic way no one could've ever expect.
This episodes were huge on Emma's and Regina's character giving the leads even more space and development.
Emma and Hook were brilliant together and Outlaw Queen was also really sweet.
I like the show ended with so many open stories and I can't believe that we have to wait 2 months for the first scoop on the new eps and 4 and a half months for the new episodes.
P.S. Lets start a petition for Merlin's casting. #JoeLandoForMerlin ^^
Yh I deifnitely still enjoyed it. I'm really interested to see how she plays Dark Swan, OUAT has so many great villains, the standard is pretty high at this stage.
ReplyDeleteHenry said it was too much power for anyone to have then snapped the pen, then The Apprentice said something along the lines of "perhaps this time we did chose the right person".
Yes Henry broke the pen during his scene with the Apprentice.
ReplyDeleteI replayed the scene and I caught it. Damn it, it was more interesting the other way around xD,
ReplyDeleteBut that's ok, it doesn't undermine the finale or anything
I definetely like it better when the streamer cut off that scene xD, but that's ok, it's not like it downgrades the episode or anything. There's still plenty of exciting scenarios for Henry now that he is the author
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't mean that the Savior's son who is the Author won't find a way to do it. *_*
ReplyDeleteThat's right, the good thing about OUAT is that possibilities are always open
ReplyDeleteHa, I remember Joe Lando from The Seceret Circle; he would be a very interesting cast choice.
ReplyDeleteI also hope Elsa comes by on season 5! I really liked her character and was sad to see her go.
The episode as a whole was a big win for me as it opens up somany possibilities for next season! I honestly can't wait!
The episode was excellent! That cliffhanger was awesome
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more :)
ReplyDeleteAmazing finale, hitting all the right notes which all the more remind me why I love this show in the first place. :D
ReplyDeleteThank you again for a great review. And for me, you've right: is the best season...and season finale was a great one, I wasn't disappointed, all the finale not.
ReplyDeleteOnly what I'll miss in S5 will be Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin in the Enchanted Forest. Was always so fun to watch.
Joe would be great for the role. He can play good, evil, mysterious, I think he would nail it.
ReplyDeleteThe episode was a nice closure and opened so many stories for next season. Heartbroken Snow searching for Emma, Regina wanting to help her, "Human" Rumple, Merlin, Camelot and where the heck did Emma disappear to and why?
Do you know who i am? I changed my Name yesterday
ReplyDeleteWill's very presence was a total downer indeed. I really do hope Michael Socha is given more material for his arc next season, one that involves Maleficent ideally considering how they share history that was not revisited this season
ReplyDeleteI didn't see you around yesterday, so... no, you'll have to tell me your previous nickname xD
ReplyDeleteI'm certain will get some flashbacks with Rumple in Camelot. Doubt the writers would pass on that as Rumple mentioned he visited.
ReplyDeleteMy Name was Goodbye Revenge 2011-2015 😢
ReplyDeleteOne additional note:
ReplyDeleteIn the real world, when The Apprentice first encounters Isaac, it's said to be the year 1966. The Apprentice makes reference to the former author having died. I am almost certain that was a reference to the late Walt Disney, who died in 1966.
hope so...yes I remember when Belle asked him about it was in Camelot and Rumple said: good for me, not good for Camelot...but more flashbacks I can't imagine, except 1-2 with Regina/Evil Queen :-(
ReplyDeleteooooh! Noted :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind words :)!
ReplyDeleteLet's hope season 5 keeps it up!
Nice one! I didn't notice that!
ReplyDeleteNeal was conceived in the Enchanted Forest, maybe this is why he went to the enchanted forest, and became Rumple and Belle's son! :P
ReplyDeletethink too was a wonderful honor for Walt Disney which died 15.12.1966... and it must have been around Christmas time, Isaac as the seller in the shop, you could here "Jingle Bells Rock"
ReplyDeleteI'm still not so sure, but I'll give it a pass since the episode was pretty good. But I remain lukewarm about that explanation
ReplyDeletedefinitely! I'll see as many again rant about "my" Rumple LOL
ReplyDeleteno seriously: my most beloved serie is OUAT with all these beautiful characters and stories they create
I'm actually really glad they didn't milk the alternate reality.
ReplyDeleteRumple had 300 dark years and enough time to screw up multiple lives. So I'm sure there is still potential to tell the story.
ReplyDeleteHis new begginigs as a human compare to his start as TDO. Don't worry RC will jump in that glitter a bunch of times I'm sure.
For a moment there, I honestly thought OUAT was going to tap into Marvel lore and bring Venom into the canvas because of how the darkness has shown itself to be symbiotic with its hosts. lol
ReplyDeleteI know this show can be confusing, but Baelfire is Neal right? He was born in the Enchanted Forest. His mom abandoned him to be with Hook and become a pirate maiden. Baelfire/Neal came to our world when he feel through the portal, trying to get his father to go with him, but Rumple couldn't give up his power and Baelfire ended up alone in our world.
ReplyDeleteI think he was referring to Prince Neal, Snow White and Charming's son that was born last season.
ReplyDeleteIn the Heroes and Villains story, Isaac made it so that Neal had been born a long time ago and died during the Ogre Wars despite Rumple's best efforts to save him.
ReplyDeleteAhhh! Forgot little about little baby Charming....I mean, they seem to themselves, so it's easy for me, lol.
ReplyDeleteI am guessing since Isaac made it so Snow was now the Evil Queen and did not have a True Love any longer because something Regina did that caused his death, baby Neal doesn't even exist in this alternate world.
Seriously, you must have some kind of shipper bias, because you left out the most important part of the whole episode. After 3 years of build up, Emma finally told Killian she loved him, and you didn't even mention it! She finally opened her heart to him. Their scenes together in the Enchanted Forest were some of their best ever, and you didn't mention them, either. You turned Emma's confession of love for Killian into some kind of commentary on her friendship with Regina. Really? And you totally missed the part when she returned to Storybrooke desperate to find him, thinking he was dead for a brief, terrifying moment, only to explode with joy when she saw him alive. I mean, the entire second half of the episode was about Emma realizing her love for Killian and finally telling him. It was about her emotional growth to the point where she has finally opened her heart to him. And that last moment, when she told him she loved him, and when she kept looking at him until she disappeared--it was the most heartbreaking scene of the entire season. What kind of review leaves out the emotional heart of the entire episode?
ReplyDeleteBaby Neal "spent" his first eight months in the Enchanted Forest. ^^
ReplyDeleteI'm sure he is the baby Belle and Rumple got in the AU :)
You're right. Also, Christmas decorations all around.
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I am so so excited to see where they go with Emma becoming the Dark One. Emma sacrificing herself to become dark so Regina would'nt again was probably one of the best things about this episode. Their relationship brings the feels!
ReplyDeleteMy fav ep of S4 just beyond epic, why? : I got to see my dream granted of Rumple with light Magic, I will never thank Adam enough for it. Hook will fight for Emma & Regina too. That is amazing. Zelena's envy for Regina was *_*. Regina crashing her wedding too. The new life of Rumple + his doubts & pain will be soooo exciting for me to see. I cried so much for Rumple's words to Bele, sooo moving. "I don't love Will" Belle said. I fainted. Belle is sooo worried for Rumple *_*. I cried when Hook died and CapitainSwan was sooooo deep.
ReplyDeleteHe was there, as Belle and Rumple's infant son.
ReplyDelete"-If Henry didn’t go to the Enchanted Forest because he was born in this
ReplyDeleteworld, then Neal shouldn’t have gone either, which raises the question:
who was taking care of him while this was going on?"
It's always been the case that people conceived in the Enchanted Forest get whisked away in these situations even if they were born in our world. That's why Cinderella's daughter Alexandra wasn't left behind when everyone went back in the middle of Season 3. And if it wasn't clear enough already, the showrunners confirmed that on Twitter. So Baby Neal, Alexandra, and Aurora's son Phillip weren't left behind in Storybrooke either. Baby Neal became Belle and Rumple's baby.
They keep saying they want to bring back Anastasia next season, so I hope they do and Will becomes relevant.
ReplyDeleteTechnically, this makes Gold a baby snatcher, which is ironic because (A) Snow and Charming stole Maleficent's baby, and (B) that's what Rumpelstiltskin was known for in the original fairy tale.
ReplyDeleteyeh, Scarlet could have been gone and I would not have noticed. Even if he is supposed to be important(which I doubt) next season, they had no reason to bring him in now.
ReplyDeleteIm really hoping there some time differential between everyone else and Emma, when the show returns because that would make things a whole lot more difficult and interesting. Not really a timeskip for our characters, but something for Emma would be nice. But I hope Emma was sent to parts unknown as well.
ReplyDeleteI just think Emma and Hook's relationship is more than well explored and the review focused on some other dynamics of the episode. I didn't go on deep on them, not because they are not important or badly done, but because it was just a matter of time for these development to happen.
ReplyDeleteThey are organic and they feel right, but they are not standouts to me.
I like Emma and Hook as a couple, but they are not the sole reason I watch the show.
I keep my ships to myself, the reviews try to cover more aspects of the show. I could have mentioned the development in the relationship and it is a huge step for Emma to say she loves Hook, but a bigger momment for me is when she realizes she lost the chance to do it, because that leads into it, that's the momment where Emma realizes she has to open up and I believe that's worth noticing. Emma saying I love you to Hook is important, but the previous moment in which she tells Regina that she should have said it is more important in my opinion.
Sometimes I leave out things not because they are important, but because I think the audience was already expecting it or they are not as big moments to mention (not the case) or I simply just forgot (I'm only human). To be honest I forgot to mention it, but I don't think it's a huge deal not to talk about when I already explored Emma's vulnerabilities on the review in the first place
I appreciate the response! It seemed like such a glaring omission. The showrunners promised that the finale would explore Emma's feelings for Hook, and they did an amazing job of it, far exceeding my expectations. ABC felt it was so important that they promoted Emma telling Hook she loved him today at the upfronts. I understand people ship who they ship, but Emma's admission of her love for Hook had nothing to do with Regina, other than the fact that she was hoping to use Regina to give Robin true love's kiss in order to get back to the real world where, hopefully, Hook would still be alive. It seemed like the review was trying to minimize Emma's feelings for Hook and over-emphasize the fact that Regina was in danger when Emma sacrificed herself at the end, even though the whole town was in danger and Emma would have done the same thing had that black CGI goo been attacking anyone else in that street, whether it be Snow, Robin Hood, or whomever. Emma telling Hook she loved him was the emotional part of that scene. It felt like the review intentionally ignored that moment in order to pretend that Emma loves someone else entirely. Glad to hear it was just an oversight.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great review, there was lots to like in the episode but parts did dissapoint me. As a CS shipper I am glad we finally got the I love You from Emma but then they were ripped apart which I didn't like. I feel they have had more than their share of challenges for multiple seasons when others have had little challenges for only one season, but that is just me. I hope dark Emma only lasts for 1/2 a season and fr some reason I see Rumple getting his power back in some way. The difference between Emma as the dark one and Rumple is that Emma has so many people that love her: her parents,Henry, hook, and Regina and now Robin as well. I think it will be that love that brings her back but I don't want to see it dragged on all season.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the season in general not my favorite, I felt they spent way too much time on frozen and the Villians and the core and secondary characters were not used near enough. Micheal Sorcha for one- great character but totally underused and as Belle sudden love interest? I really didn't like the Zelena / Marion/Robin or how Marion was used from then beginning, it just didn't feel right and this show has always been so creative I think that it could, have been told differently with the same effect and not piss off a lot of fans. I really feel like with the Marion story they thought fans would be okay with it but when there was such a huge reaction they tried to,fix by bringing back Zelena and her getting pregnant which just made an awful taste is many fans mouths.
Love your review! and I couldn't be more agree with it....for me as well season 4 was the best of all...it had so much content and definitely family was the main topic on it (which I personally support)....
ReplyDeleteAdam and Eddie are genius...but I think it is a big challenge to JM to play a different dark one, it cant be as Rumple, he is he and she must to be different....depending on that the next season will be as good as this one....I am worried about one tinny thing...how long will Emma be the dark one?....and how long can we all fans can handle it...personally I will approve if she stayed that way the entire season 5...=) =) but I know they must have 2 different arcs in one season....
by the way I loved Regina in the alternate universe (great acting on Lana Parrilla) Did anyone else noticed a lot of Emma lines on her? loved that detail!! ...I also would wanted to see more of the alternate universe....
Also..everyone is commenting about finding Emma, but the dagger remained in the middle of the street, so if they want to see her...the only thing they need to is summon her with the dagger right?
I bet Regina will be the one that keep the dagger safe....
Anyway see you on 4 months!! happy hiatus!! =)
I wondered where Neal was, too. He wasn't a part of the magical world either. Has Henry left him in his crip?
ReplyDeleteThe alternate universe really was purely entertaining which was probably because the actors had so much fun doing it. Hats off to Ginnifer Goodwin and Lana Parrilla. They were the best in their alternate roles. Evil Snow had this perverted style of the light Snow and was kinda impish. And Regina lost all her regal composure and was more like a farmer. I wouldn't have been surprised if she had spit on the ground for no reason. But that would have been too much and Parrilla knows how to play a whole different character by altering her laughter, voice, her gestures and mimics. As always brilliant! She really needs some more awards.
Aaaaah okay. Thank you. I am not on twitter and was wondering what had happened to Neal.^^
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts, too. The darkness even behaved very similar to Venom, lurking around until it found its pray. And its form was the same.
ReplyDeleteShouldnt be Black Swan instead of Dark Swan?
ReplyDeleteYou can call Emma per "Black Swan", but do not impose names to others.
ReplyDeleteI'm not imposing anything, but Black Swan fits better.
ReplyDeleteI made the joke because it sounds like "The Dark Knight Rises" only with Swan instead of Knight
ReplyDeleteMmmm, "The Dark Swan Rises"? I like that.
ReplyDelete
