Many months ago it was revealed that a new character, a women, would become the new Thor. After many months of speculation, Marvel has now confirmed her identity.
In October, Marvel Comics introduced readers to a new hero: a female Thor. Since then, the identity of the woman wielding Thor’s mighty hammer has been a secret. But that ends on Wednesday when issue No. 8 of the Thor series, written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by Russell Dauterman, goes on sale in comic book stores and digitally.
The story reveals the new heroine to be Dr. Jane Foster, a former girlfriend of the hero who has been battling breast cancer. “Jane Foster has been part of the Thor comics and the Thor mythology from almost the very beginning,” Mr. Aaron said. “The very act of picking up this hammer, of becoming Thor, is killing her. Where we go from here is the real story.”
The new series has been a Top 10 book for Marvel. “Most of the new readers seem to be women and young girls, which is great,” Mr. Aaron said. “You’re seeing more and more comics that appeal to that audience.” The popularity of the new Thor has also increased his recognition with non-comics fans. “Usually when I say I write comics for a living, I kind of get blank stares,” Mr. Aaron said. “Now, when I say I write Thor, they say, ‘You’re the lady Thor guy?’ Yup. That’s me.”

I don't think she should be called the female Thor. It's like the supergirl and batgirl thing.
ReplyDeleteMarvel has actually been stressing that she's not 'Female Thor', 'Thor Girl' or 'Women Thor' she's just 'Thor' or 'New Thor'.

ReplyDeleteI'm good with this in the comics and will read them. If they ever make a movie though, I'm not sure about Natalie Portman taking this on. I know they're separate, she's just the one I envision.

not sure if she could pull that off. But not been a fan of Thor movies much anyway. Comics it will probably end up fine though.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's how I see it too. Thor hasn't been replaced, Jane Foster has simply taken on the mantle of 'Thor.' Just like how Sam Wilson became Captain America—it doesn't mean Steve Rogers is completely gone, it just means Sam took on his mantle. Unfortunately there's no way to differentiate between Thor and 'Thor' which is why it can sound odd to call her 'Thor' sometimes when the original Thor still exists.

ReplyDeleteIn the comics Thor is closer to a title rather then a single person. When the current Thor is deemed unworthy of the power/title of Thor, it finds someone new to take up the mantle.
ReplyDeleteThe main Thor that we all know is Dr. Donald Blake. A doctor that tried to put the people first but always wanted to do more. When the previous wielder lost the power, he was chosen.
Just like Power Rangers lmao each season new heroes are born to fight evil lol.
ReplyDeleteSimilar to the Lantern's each ring chooses a worthy person to wield it and if the ring sense's they are not worthy it shuts down making the ring worthless lol
This seems a lot less amazing than it originally did. Maybe that was my mistake but I had the impression it was more like a ret-con where Thor was actually a woman rather than just a female taking over the title. The other thing that annoys me is the "The hammer is killing her" part. Makes me think this is more of a limited gimmick than they made it out to be. The rest of the new Avengers team though still seems very diverse so I hope it's not just a 6 month-1 year thing and then after they just go back to the usual white guy originals.

ReplyDeleteAs for the impact on the MCU, absolutely non existent. Hemsworth has a fair few films to go yet and they won't be replacing him any time soon.
