The finale episode of “NCIS: Los Angeles” continued the multi-episode arc dealing with stolen oil and Arkady’s daughter. In “Chernoff, K.,” we saw our favorite agents travel to Russia to track down Anna and the oil. They find Anna pretty quickly, and she’s already killed the man who kidnapped her. She then helps the team determine who was selling the oil, which turns out to be ISIS. After going undercover, the team stops the sale. In the meantime, Arkady and Hetty both give Callen more information about his father. Callen learns his dad escaped from prison and lived in Moscow until the late ‘80s. But Hetty tells him his father died several years ago. Fortunately, though, Hetty is wrong. At the end of the episode we see Callen’s father alive and well. But Callen never learns the truth before heading back to the U.S.
I was looking forward to this episode, hoping it would be a thrilling Russian journey that revealed exciting new information about Callen’s father. And at least that part delivered. I was ecstatic to learn Callen’s father is still alive. That was a gripping, exciting moment that granted fans’ wishes. Several other scenes also proved fun to watch. But unfortunately, much of the episode left me disappointed. The case was boring for a lot of the hour, the team wasn’t utilized well, Arkady’s daughter didn’t end up having any ties to anyone and they didn’t make good use of going to Russia. Overall the episode didn’t feel like a finale.
The episode also didn’t leave me too excited for the new season because it didn’t leave viewers with hope that Callen would find out his father was alive. After waiting so long to learn the identity and story of Callen’s dad, knowing we have to wait even longer for that actual reunion is frustrating. It feels like a tease. And the problem is, people are tired of waiting. It’s taken too long to get here to tease us some more.
The Setting and Plot
One of the things I was excited about with the team going to Russia was seeing them in a new environment. Location episodes are always fun because they give you a unique feel for different countries, cultures and traditions. But I was immediately disappointed on that front. They jumped right into the action with no location setup. We didn’t see them arriving in Russia or getting adjusted. The episode began with a shootout at a house that could have been anywhere. The Russian scenic views were so static, they felt almost lifeless. And when Sam and Callen were driving in Moscow, it looked fake. I felt like they missed a big opportunity to show us the sights, sounds and feel of a new city. Why write an episode going to Russia if they are not going to take advantage of it?
As for the plot, the case just wasn’t that interesting to me. With so much mystery surrounding Anna, they didn’t deliver on the intrigue. Her character was okay but definitely not as exciting as I’d hoped. She was actually pretty obnoxious. (Although maybe I should’ve expected that with Arkady as her father.) And the whole “You should really trust me” storyline did nothing for me. The team also found her so quickly, it felt anti-climactic. And she’d already killed Karposev on her own. They’d built him up to be this violent threat and we never saw him alive. Plus, I’d kind of hoped Anna would be connected to Callen or the case in some interesting way, and there would be an intriguing reason Arkady didn’t want anyone to know about her. But we got none of that.
The rest of the plot was also less than thrilling. Following the buyers and the sellers was confusing – and so was their task with the computers. This series often focuses too much detail on their drawn-out, zig-zag, change-direction-every-moment plots at the expense of paying better attention to the larger picture. The one plot-related highlight I did enjoy was seeing the team all use their individual styles to beat up the buyers’ representatives in the hotel rooms. It was interesting to see Kensi use that ball and chain while Sam whipped out a baton and Callen and Deeks fought the men with their hands. These guys have some serious fighting skills!
Hetty and Arkady
Arkady was as funny as ever, especially in his scenes with Hetty. I absolutely love the two of them together. When Arkady came out of Hetty’s kitchen in her Moscow apartment and started criticizing her lack of food and decor, I had to laugh. These two have undeniable chemistry. And funny dialogue, too. I loved Arkady asking Hetty if she was lonely in school, and Hetty responding that she was “the queen of the prom, Sweetheart.” Go Hetty! (Can you picture Hetty as a prom queen? I want to see a photo!) I also enjoyed how Hetty pointed out in front of Arkady that Anna was nothing like her father because she wanted to help them. “You know I’m standing right here in the room?” Arkady asked her. These two crack me up.
And then there was the singing. Hetty was so amused with her distraction plan at the hotel. And poor Arkady had no choice. His singing audition was hilarious. Did you see the way he thanked the judges with all that confidence and suave style? I think he actually enjoyed himself. I really wish they’d expanded this scene. I would have liked to know more about his audition or see him walk in the room and struggle with picking a song and getting started. This scene was already funny, but it could have been even better if they’d explored it more.
Hetty had other great moments, too. She knew just how to draw out Anna. She used her stealth skills to sneak into the security room. And she revealed she used to be married. That was a shocker – for Callen and us! His reaction was hilarious. I definitely got the impression Hetty was lying when she said it meant nothing to her. But she piqued my interest. Who was her undercover husband? Hetty has such a fascinating life. And she always keeps us guessing.
After all his selfish actions, Arkady proved himself to be a selfless father by jumping in front of Anna to protect her from getting shot. He also demonstrated his loyalty and helpfulness by telling everyone to leave him bleeding in the garage so he could stall the police and give them a chance to get away. I hope Sam remembers that in the future! And I was very happy to hear he was still alive. I actually thought they were going to kill him there for a moment. But fortunately for us, he lived to joke another day!
Sam, Kensi, Deeks, Eric and Nell
For a finale episode, I was really surprised that they didn’t use all the characters well. Kensi and Deeks were barely shown. Nell and Eric didn’t add anything. And Sam had a minor supporting role. Everything was pretty much about Callen. Don’t get me wrong – I love Callen. But I also expected the other characters would have some important contributions. While they did have smaller enjoyable scenes, they were all grossly underused. And that was disappointing.
Sam played the role of supportive yet questioning partner. I loved how he stood by the car watching his friend when Callen goes to visit his father’s grave. He gave Callen time and space but was still there for him. But he also served as a reality check and voice of reason. This was actually kind of sad, but I understood. He disapproved of Callen using Eric’s Kremlin access to dig up information because the action could put them in danger. And he didn’t want his partner getting his hopes up about his father because he didn’t want to see him disappointed if his dad was dead.
Sam had some funny lines when it came to Arkady. After Arkady’s contact doesn’t want to see him again, Sam responds, “Does anyone in Russia like you?” (Arkady was also funny in his answer: “These are anomalies. You know, I’m good-time guy.”) Sam also made me laugh when Callen told Anna they were her father’s friends and Sam clarified, “I’m more of an acquaintance.”
Kensi and Deeks had two short scenes that I enjoyed. Their first was the shooting in the woods. Kensi amused me as she gave Deeks no credit for killing the bad guy, leaving Deeks confused as to why his actions were not appreciated. I loved how he repeated “You’re welcome” even though Kensi never said thank you. Then I enjoyed watching Kensi stop the driver from Cameroon. She was fantastic playing the ditzy, cute, coy girl who needs help. Little does this man know. I loved when she whipped out her gun and threw his “bunny” nickname right back at him. But the only time we saw Deeks in the scene was when he got in the car without a word. I missed seeing more of these two.
As for Nell and Eric, I was surprised they got on each other’s nerves so much. Nell was annoyed when Eric kept asking her what she was doing. (Her rude response annoyed me.) Then Eric got snippy with her requests later. He was clearly under a lot of pressure but that was surprising because he doesn’t usually get stressed out in situations like these.
Callen and his Father
Callen’s search for information on his father was the best part of this episode, its saving grace. But even with that, it wasn’t until the end that I felt they made it worth our while. Up until the last few scenes, I thought they were kind of stingy with information. But nonetheless, I enjoyed watching the revelations, beginning with Arkady and Callen at the cafe. I love how Callen can read Arkady so well. He knows Arkady chose that location for a reason. And Arkady finally tells him why. His dad used to frequent the cafe, using it as a meeting hub. I loved how Callen goes from not trusting Arkady to suddenly looking at a picture of his father. There was a moment of vulnerability before he glances at the picture, realizing what it is. He’s surprised, intrigued, wondering if this is really his dad, accepting it’s really him. Finally seeing his father’s face is a huge deal. This was a nice moment. Callen also learns some surprising information. His dad must have somehow escaped from Gulag (a Soviet system of forced labor camps where millions died) because 14 years after he was sent there, he was still helping refugees escape, taking meetings at this cafe. Arkady met him there once himself.
Later at the church, Hetty expands on that information. Showing herself to be a caring mother of sorts, she gathered the information Eric found and gives it to Callen herself. She wants to help him find answers. Hetty confirms Arkady’s story that Callen’s dad helped refugees escape to the West until 1988. She also tells Callen his father apparently changed his name. He left Nikita Reznikov behind to become Konstantine Chernoff. He must have taken on the new name after escaping Gulag. Hetty also tells Callen that his father lived an hour away. But Callen picks up on the fact that Hetty used the past tense of the word ‘lived’. When he presses, Hetty confirms his fears: His dad died in 2008.
It was so sad watching Callen receive the news. He starts breathing heavy. His eyes mist over. He fights the emotions and then becomes agitated. As expected, Chris O’Donnell was fantastic. Callen’s greatest fears came true and his hopes were dashed. I was actually happy they gave us this scene before revealing his dad was still alive. This way we got to see the emotional reaction and the drama behind that horrible moment. It will hopefully make the happy news even better (whenever Callen actually receives that). But the sad news doesn’t end there. As he processes everything, Callen realizes his dad lived in Moscow while he himself was there. (I believe he spent time in Russia both with the CIA and NCIS). They were in the same city together for years. Think of all those missed opportunities they could have had together. The realization is awful for Callen, but for the audience it raises some interesting new questions. Could Callen’s dad have known his son was there? I'm not sure how he would have known about covert American missions - except that he has an intelligence background himself. But I like the idea of his dad secretly watching over Callen. Regardless, whatever happened in the past, at least Callen has the chance to pay his respects before they leave.
After visiting the cemetery, Callen returns to the cafe. It was sad to watch him stand outside, looking in. You get the impression he’s been there awhile, just waiting, hoping the news may somehow not be true, and wanting to be in the place his dad used to frequent. But then they have to leave, and the show fades to black. Yet just when you think it’s over, the picture slowly fades back to the cafe. I loved how they structured the ending. They gave us a moment to mourn before they revealed the real truth. As soon as you see the setting, you know what’s coming – and it’s exciting! You watch as a man walks into that café, and you immediately know it’s Callen’s father. He’s alive after all! He sits down at the table and twirls a coin in his hand, a coin meant for someone escaping Russia. He is still helping people leave the country. Callen’s father is still risking his life to help others. If only Callen had stayed a little longer.
The ending raised a slew of new questions. Does Callen’s dad know the whereabouts of his son? Does Hetty know the truth? Does Arkady? The Russian said he worked with Callen’s father until 1988, but could he have started up again later? Maybe the coins in his desk were current coins. The possibilities are endless. But for me the biggest question was this: How is Callen ever going to find out his father is alive? While the revelation was exciting, it was also frustrating because I could foresee it taking a long time for Callen to find out the truth. He thinks his dad is dead. So how long are we going to have to wait now for their reunion? Like many fans, I am getting restless. I don’t want to wait anymore. I don’t want this story to drag on for another two years. I hope they revisit it a lot sooner than I’m expecting.
What did you think of the finale? Did you enjoy the revelations about Callen's father? Are you excited for next season? Do you have any predictions on how Callen and his dad will be reunited? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
I dunno, the end scene could be interpreted more then one way. Yes, most fans want Callen's father to be alive and it is likely the show will go that route cause it opens up a lot of story and allows for Callen's mystereous pass to continue without resolution. BUT there's no timing on the scene, it fades to black, could be that it was a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteChris O'Donnell does an amazing job when he found out that Callen's father had died. I think that usually finales end with one of the members in a life-threatening situation. This time it focused on the development of G's family life, and relationship built between Arcady and G. I think this will introduce Anna more next season, though I didn't see any real chemistry between them or attraction. I like your idea of Arkady helping people even today. I also like that Sam and G trust each other where they don't have to speak to each other about what's going on but they know how to be there for one another. Could've been more exciting? Yes. But for me I like Chris O'Donnell and his acting was amazing this episode. After some very heavy season finales, like the one with Deeks and Sam tortured, Sam and Callen trapped in a sub, etc., this was a nice change. There's a balance between character development and exciting plot. So I have a feeling that the plot will continue to get exciting since they introduce Isis as the bad guys. Which is very close to reality.
ReplyDeleteOnce again you have done an amazing job describing the episode. I also didn't feel the team was utilized very well. I'm a huge Callen fan so the heavy focus on Callen was fine with me, but it did feel like more could be done with the team. I am also getting frustrated that they aren't moving Callen's story along more. I was really hoping Callen would finally get to meet his dad, so I wasn't thrilled with how they chose to end the show. I think a lot of fans are beginning to give up on the show because things get strung out so much. This concerns me because I could see the show getting cancelled before the writers get around to answering all the questions they've raised. I think it would be a lot better if they resolved storylines in one season and then opened up new ones the next season. I will continue to watch next season, but I do understand when some say they aren't looking forward to it. If the writers want the show to continue I hope they improve their story pacing next season. Now that my rant is over, I do at least have to give Chris O'Donnell kudos for a great performance last night, and I really enjoyed the scene with Hetty and Callen in the church. Hetty/Callen scenes have always been my favorite scenes of the series. Thanks for a great season of reviews, I hope we will see more next season.
ReplyDeleteWell done as always, Tonya. I love your reviews, they are so spot on. I agree with everything you wrote, except one thing: I don't think Callen spent his childhood in Moscow. Why would he? He was born in Romania and brought to the US at the age of four, when his mother died. He grew up in the US. I think he was referring to his undercover mission for the CIA, when he spent some time in Russia. Therefore his father wouldn't know of his whereabouts. Unless he was the one responsible of sending him to America.
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge Callen fan, too, so of course I liked the episode. But it didn't feel like a season finale. And like the rest of the fans I'm tired of waiting. I guess Callen's first name will be revealed in the series finale and then we'll finaly have him meeting his father and it will make for an appropriate series finale, but I really hope we'll get that revelation earlier.
By the way I had that crazy idea that Callen's name doesn't even start with a G. He knows it only from the engraving at that box we saw in the first episode. The box looks quite old and I started to think that he got it from his grandfather George and it was his initial and not Callen's. Crazy theory, I know. :-)
Hello Boomer. Hadn't thought of that. There is no timing on the scene, you're right. I don't think the show is taking it that way, but like you point out, it's possible. Thanks for sharing that thought! (I also like how you say it would allow Callen's mysterious past to continue "without resolution," since the show clearly has no immediate intent to resolve things.) Thanks for your perspective.
ReplyDeleteChris O'Donnell really was great when Callen found out his dad had died! He always rises to the challenge in these kinds of scenes. I love watching him. So true that the show's finales usually feature a team member in a life-threatening situation. I also didn't mind that not being the case this time (since we always know they're going to survive). Lol. I liked the focus on G's family life, I just wanted more. I also didn't see any real chemistry between Anna and Callen. I wonder if we'll see more of her next season. Probably. That idea of Arkady helping people today crossed my mind. Not sure if it will turn out to be true. Love your point on how Sam and G trust each other to the point of not needing words. We saw that with Sam at the cemetery. I totally agree there's a balance between character development and exciting plot. I think they need both! For me this episode was lacking on team character development, though not Callen's. And the plot was just meh. But hopefully they'll achieve a good balance next season. I thought the ISIS plot was over since they recovered the oil, but maybe not. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Molly! So glad you enjoyed the episode and the type of finale it turned out to be!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Linda! I don't mind the emphasis on Callen at all. But they just didn't utilize the rest of the team enough for me. And it looks like for you, too. Yes, it is getting frustrating that they aren't moving Callen's story along more! It would have been fun to see him meet his dad. I also think it's a real concern that fans might give up on the show because things get strung out so long. People don't stick around for years if they're not getting answers. I totally agree with you: I would like it MUCH better if they resolved storylines in one season and then opened new ones in the next season. Things are much easier to follow that way. I will also continue to watch but I hope others do, too. Like you, I believe the writers really need to improve their story pacing next season. Now that that's out of the way, yes, we definitely need to give Chris O'Donnell kudos for his performance. I love watching him. He was so great in that scene with him and Hetty in the church. I loved it!! Those two have such a special dynamic. Thanks for all your wonderful comments during the season, Linda! I've really enjoyed chatting with you. :)
ReplyDeleteI really like to watch more Dicks/Kensi development!
ReplyDeleteI just love these too. They are so funny together!
Want Anna to get that job offered by Hetty with NCIS: LA, NO or NCIS even as a crossover guest? A kick ass kinda agent like Kensi that freelances all over the globe...NCIS:Anywhere?
ReplyDeleteMissed more Kensi and Deeks love those two but wish we saw a bit more of the couple thing they now have going on. Roll on S7 would love a juicy IA story for Deeks but also for the writers to further develop their personal relationship. It's all good as there are 24 episodes just waiting to fulfill fans wishes.
ReplyDeleteHello, fan! Thanks for your comments. I agree that it was nice not to have a "will they die" or "how will they escape" episode, since we all know they get out of everything! Your point is valid about how people who are adopted don't always get answers about their birth parents. But I hope Callen's search ends one day! Since the writers are in control of these stories, I think it makes better drama when they follow up on the things they start. Thanks for the reminder about the note left on his sister's grave. Hadn't even thought about that. Very interesting. Yes, S7 should finally address the Deeks IA investigation. I was hoping to see more of it this season, but I'm looking forward to that story next season. You are totally right about Callen not spending his childhood in Moscow. Thanks for the heads up. After being born in Romania & living there when he was young, he moved to the U.S. I made a quick assumption that I didn't fully think through. I've now changed that part of the review. Thanks very much for alerting me to that! :)
ReplyDeleteHey Starsearcher. Thanks so much for the nice words about my reviews. And thanks for letting me know about Callen's childhood. You're totally right. When I heard Callen make the comment, for some reason his upbringing in Romania suddenly became Russia in my mind. I didn't think it through. So I'm very glad you mentioned it. I've changed that in the review now. But I still think it might be possible his dad knew where he was. Who knows, though. That's really just me hoping. :)
ReplyDeleteGlad I'm not alone in thinking it didn't feel like a season finale. I feel like we fans have been pretty patient, which is why we're tired of waiting - we've waited too long now and it's only partially paying off. Gosh, I really hope it doesn't take until the series finale to learn Callen's first name and have him meet his father. It would make for a good series finale, but that is WAY too long to wait! Haha.
Oh wow. Love your theory about the G. Wouldn't that be funny? That would really throw everything off! Thanks so much for your great comments!
I love those two as well! They are hilarious together. I wish we'd seen more of them in the finale! But next season we should find out more about the Deeks internal affairs investigation.
ReplyDeleteHey, you never know - maybe they will bring Anna into the fold. Interesting suggestion. So you really liked Anna? That's awesome! She was pretty kick ass! She could grow on me, I think. But I wasn't too sure what to think of her in this episode. After she stopped being so obnoxious, I could like her better. "NCIS: Anywhere" made me laugh. And Agent Borin has already been on NCIS and NO, so maybe LA is her next stop! :)
ReplyDeleteLove your wonderful optimism for S7!! "24 episodes just waiting to fulfill fans' wishes." That's an awesome statement & outlook!!! I also love those two and wish we'd seen more of them (and their wonderful relationship). I too hope for a juicy IA story for Deeks next season! I can't wait to find out what the writers have in store. And to see the characters deepening their personal relationship. Bring on season 7! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how this season several shows chose this path also. not alot of heavy cliff hangers but alot of bread crumbs for next season. Fans don't like to get the rug pulled out from under them constantly and they get restless but this didn't bother me. The NCIS franchise doesn't offer alot of personal moments. they do things very slowly and always in the background of a case. this episode was different. It seemed the case was secondary to Callen's personal life. it was a nice change and I think that is why the case seemed almost to be in the background. It almost seemed like it was getting in the way of the real case, finding Callen's father. I do think we will get some answers and pretty quickly in season 7. for one, You don't hire an actor of the Caliber of Daniel J Travanti for a 3 sec walk on if you're not planning a bigger role soon. there have been lots of bread crumbs this season and not a lot of answers. maybe the time and day change had something to do with that. Whatever the reason, I think we'll get more answers and less bread crumbs in season 7. Chris O'donnell was awesome in this episode. He really shines in the heavy emotional scenes. I didn't find Sam very supportive. He seemed to dash Callen's hopes at every turn. Maybe he was trying to get Callen to not get his hopes up but it seemed odd to me he wasn't more encouraging. Arkady, singing, was hilarious. one of the funniest scenes I've seen in this show. I absolutely hated Ana. I didn't like the character and I didn't like the actress. I can't imagine her as Callen's new love interest. I know she will be back but I hope not. And Hetty. Did she know Callen's father was alive and lie? if she did why? is she protecting his father or callen? I can't imagine she would have gotten it wrong but then why lie? Does she lie to get Callen out of Russia? When Callen wants to stay back to get Arkady out, she tells him that he has lots of contacts that can get him out. Is she talking about Callen's father? is that how Callen will find out he is alive.
ReplyDeleteI agree about the G. idea, often thought the same thing. I do have a question what box?
ReplyDeleteI never tire of the Arkady and Hetty vaudeville routines and am glad he will survive to be a thorn in the team's side again. I am so with you on the whole trip to Russia scenario not being fully realized. Remember when the team went off to Eastern Europe to rescue Hetty a few years back and it was such a great adventure ? This just fell flat, albeit with some fine moments mixed in. (One of which was NOT that alley which was soooo LA and not Moscow) This is again in line with my contention that something has gone amiss in the show's production as it is not rendering the cohesive show it should be giving us , with such a great cast to work around. Insert head-scratch. I wonder if the salaries for such a large cast over time are eating up too much from a too small production budget. Anyway, I shall be looking forward to and hoping for improvement next season. And , for goodness sakes, some answers. PS I was a bit weirded out that Hetty either (1) was wrong- HETTY WRONG ? - about the death of Callen's father OR (2) that Hetty would lie to Callen about the truth of his still being alive ,knowing how devastated he would be - too too cruel, I would think. Thanks again for another perceptive report.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Chris was awesome in this episode. He really does shine in the heavy emotional scenes.
ReplyDeleteI'm also not a fan of Ana. I don't really want her back and I definitely don't want Callen involved with her. Leave his current relationship in tact.
I'm also thoroughly sick of this waiting. I don't want to wait many more years for this story of Callen's father to be resolved. I hope you're right that we will get some answers and pretty quickly in season 7. And I hope Hetty wasn't lying to him. ( Loved Daniel J Travanti in Hill Street Blues. )
The final episode really disappointed me. There was absolutely no Densi, and additionally there was so little of the team, Deeks, Kensi, Nell, Eric and I found that was very disappointing. We were promised a Deeks backstory this season, and what happened to the IA. It seems like whenever NCIS LA tries to bring in a new character they do it at the expense of the team we love that works so
ReplyDeletewell together. Anna was obnoxious, she put the entire team in danger at the end by coming up from behind with no weapon and she is the reason that Arkady got shot. Not to mention, the inconsistency of her mother being American and growing up in downstate Illinois, where did that ridiculous accent come from, not Champaign, Illinois.

it's just a guess but why hire a well known actor if the character doesn't appear again. Even if they don't meet yet, you can get alot of mileage out of Callen trying to get his dad out of Russia.
ReplyDeleteNot sure what this is. If you're trying to unsubscribe from disqus, this is the wrong place.
ReplyDeleteInteresting how many shows left bread crumbs for next season. You're very right. The NCIS franchise doesn't show a lot of personal moments. I enjoyed the focus on Callen's personal life in this episode. I don't mind the case being in the background - finding Callen's father was more interesting! I hope you're right about getting some answers pretty quickly in season 7. I wasn't familiar with Daniel J Travanti (I was young when Hill Street Blues aired) but I looked him up and I see you're right. So glad you pointed it out because that makes sense they hired him to give him a bigger role soon. That makes me excited!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree about Chris O'Donnell. He's great with emotional scenes. I know what you mean about Sam. He was kind of harsh. I understood why he did it but it made me pretty sad. Usually he's more encouraging than that. I also couldn't picture Anna as Callen's new love interest. A little too high maintenance for him! Lol. I also wondered if Hetty would lie to Callen. I thought she was just giving him the information that Eric had gleaned from hacking into the Kremlin system. So I figured all the records would have said he died - because that's what he wants everyone to believe, for whatever reason. If she did know the truth, she must have been trying to protect someone. Interesting thought about Callen's dad being one of Arkady's contacts, though. It would be an interesting way for the story to go.
I know what you mean about the scripts this season being choppier and not being as tight and balanced as we're used to. And you're so right - there have been lots of bread crumbs but not a lot of answers. I also hope we get more answers and less bread crumbs in season 7! Until then, thanks for all your comments!
I love how you call it vaudeville routines - it is really like that with Hetty and Arkady! And yes, glad Arkady will survive to be a thorn in the team's side again. Lol. That's a great way to put it. Oh, you point out a perfect example of a trip abroad being a great adventure - when they went to Eastern Europe. Yes! Comparatively, this indeed fell flat (although w/ some good moments interspersed). Oh yeah I noticed the alley, too! Very LA. Haha. Yeah, I don't know what's going on with the production. It's not as cohesive as it should be. 'Head-scratch' is right. Interesting thought about the cast salaries vs production budget. Who knows. I'm with you - looking forward to and hoping for improvement next season, along with some answers, dang it! About Hetty... yes, either Hetty lied or was wrong. What in the world??? It does seem too cruel for her to lie about something like this - unless she was protecting Callen somehow. Because of that it makes me lean more toward her being wrong, and that's pretty shocking. But it's possible, I guess. Interested to see which it is in the end. Thanks again for your great comments!
ReplyDeleteI was disappointed, too. What a bummer, huh? I also expected to see more of the team (and Densi). And I was surprised that they didn't follow through with the Deeks IA, leaving it to next season. I don't like to wait that long to get resolution. Anna was obnoxious, right? I could see how she could chill out more going forward, but in this episode she was kind of annoying. Haha - hadn't thought about why she had a Russian accent if she grew up in the states. Wait, did they say she grew up in the states? I think they said she was born in Russia and her mother was from Illinois. So maybe she grew up in Russia? Thanks for your comments.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree that they would not have hired an actor with the resume of someone like Daniel J. Travanti if they didn't have bigger plans for him.
ReplyDeleteThis was pretty much my reaction to the episode. Not bad overall, and I loved getting some more background info on Callen and his father, but like you said, plot-wise it wasn't particularly exciting, and most of the other characters were really underused. I really hope they revisit this soon because you're right, this is starting to drag on too long.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm wondering what happened to the whole "Deeks is under investigation" plotline. I'm hoping that comes back up in the premiere, because frankly I think that story has more potential at the moment.
Your take on this episode is basically the same as mine. My main issues with this episode is the focus was no longer on the case, or Arkady; no it became the intro for Anna. Someone I did not care about, nor with her overly "tough", "see look at me I can fight", and "take of myself attitude", which rang false and forced. I hope she stays in lost in the wind.
ReplyDeleteArkady, showed a vulnerableness, we are not used to seeing – having to depend on Hetty, Callen and Sam, in particular to rescue his daughter while he rummaged though Hetty's house. Hetty taking him to sing as a distraction for her spy business was wonderful, funny and cute! Their interactions are always entertaining. Definitely need more!
Yeah, Granger, Nell and Eric were nice with their moments and felt they added more than Kensi or Deeks. If you blinked you almost missed Deeks.
Was nice to further Callen's history, with Arkady finally revealing what he meant by,"No one introduced themselves to me as your father." I did find it odd that Arkady never outright pointed to the man he was talking about. There were 2 men in the corner: one with the espresso cup and the other with his back turned.
I am confused why Callen believed it to be the man with dark hair and angular features compared to the man he watched on the film of his father, himself and Amy on the swing in "Reznikov, A. Nikita. They looked nothing alike.
Hetty bothered me with her need to research into Reznikov. I understand they wanted you believe she was concerned by Eric accidently tipping off Russia. Yet if she had these contacts before why did she not use them before? Her concern rang manipulative, starting with telling Callen she was married. Was that a tactic to have Callen so preoccupied by that, he will be grateful for the information without asking her why the she never used those resources before?
COD's reaction to the news was moving. So close to answers, to his identity, and to family, and still not enough to get him what he wants.
Sam's overprotectiveness of Callen is always sweet. Even when he is brutally honest with Callen. You know he loves him and wants the best for him. True brothers!
Unlike many I never expected Callen to meet his father now. Brennan/writers enjoy piece mealing everything about his life. From SB's interview that meeting is a long time away(depending on how long the series lasts).
I do expect his father to be a live, I do think Daniel J. Travanti is the wrong man for the role and is nothing like the man were first introduced to(but why am I surprised when they messed up to their own timeline with the "Rage" flashback). Besides seems to easy for this man to show up now.
Oh, agree with you on Anna's strange need for them to trust her. Why? If actions are the only way to gain their trust truly, why not do what you say. Also why Hetty's help for a job? Anna had to many easy answers.
Enjoyed your reviews Tonya, and will be looking forward to them in Season 7!
Wonder where the accent came too? I do hope she never comes back! Yes, she became too important in this episode.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the question. I thought it was a box but I checked and apparently I remembered it wrong. It's one of Callen's bags that we see in the last scene of the first episode that has his name on.
ReplyDeleteOK! I was thinking I forgot something. :-)
ReplyDeleteHey Stephanie. Thanks for your comments. I totally agree with you. And I hope they revisit the topic of Callen's father again soon, too. Yeah, it was kind of weird that the Deeks investigation story was mentioned - then just faded to the background. I'm with you - I hope it comes back up in the premiere. I'm excited for that story!
ReplyDeleteYes, the man in the video was blond with a very Eastern European appearance not like the man in the corner with espresso cup.
ReplyDeleteLOL Tonya. I'm really showing my age by remembering an old tv show. Hill street Blues was a landmark show. it was the first of the realistic cop shows and Travanti is so identified with that show and so well know with that generation that I don't think they would have cast him as Callen's father for a 3 sec walk on only. so I expect to see more of him in season 7. I do think that it will be awhile before they meet but there are alot of interesting things they can do with just having callen trying to get him out of russia. I'm not sure about Hetty. I don't want to believe she would lie but its not like her to take information on face value.
ReplyDeleteHi Tonya, I though your review was spot on, and very well written as usual. Granted I watched it late at night after a long farm day, but I fell asleep during the episode and had to watch the last half this morning. I think that says it all. I was just kind of bored with the episode. I totally agree that it didn't feel like a finale. And, like you, I was bugged by how obvious it was the cast never left California. They went up into the mountains where it is a little cooler and not sub-tropical looking to shoot a few of the scenes, it wasn't a high quality production like you might see in a season finale. It was better than some of the mid-season episodes that were lackluster, but I was more disappointed than not. Great work this season with the reviews!
ReplyDeleteAs far as Arkady helping people today, I'm not sure that would be necessary. Back in 1988, it was just before the breakup of the Soviet Union and travel with the west was more restricted, people may have needed help. After 1989, travel was opened up more so it would be easier for people to travel outside of Russia without needing help. That's probably why they have the 1988 date as the ending date for the coined help.
ReplyDeleteAlso, do you think Hetty lied to Callen and she knows his father is still alive or is she unaware also.?
Didn't they try that NCIS:Anywhere as a pilot and it wasn't picked up. Had a flying bus or something like that.
ReplyDeleteI remember that now. Weird!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jack! Sorry to hear you fell asleep during the episode - but I guess that says a lot. Haha. I wish it hadn't been that obvious that they filmed it all in California. Nope, it definitely wasn't as high quality of a production as you expect to see in a season finale. Such a bummer. Still had some good elements, but like you, I was more disappointed than not. Thanks for the kind words! And thanks for the comments during the season!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you remembered Hill Street Blues so you could share your insight about the actor with us! I also don't like the idea of Hetty lying. But she usually is good with finding out information. So I don't know what to think about that.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great point, Stang88! Hadn't thought about the history and why it would have been so much more necessary to help people escape back then. Thanks for letting us know about the dates! Callen's father did have the coin in his hand still, though, which made it seem like it was still an operation of some kind. So that's what made me think that.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great question about Hetty. I'm really not sure. People are debating whether Hetty lied to Callen and really knows the truth, or whether she really didn't know. Usually Hetty seems to know everything. So it's hard to say. If Hetty did lie, I could see her doing it if she was protecting Callen or his father somehow. I'm eager to know which it is.
I think your suggestion is a great idea about the wedding! I actually had that same thought. Not sure if it will really happen, but wouldn't it be fascinating? I do think it's possible. She WAS in Russia, after all. Hmmm. Very interesting! Thanks for your great comments.
Hahaha. That made me laugh! (I think you're joking. But if this is true, I didn't hear about that one!) :)
ReplyDeletehopefully if she did lie it was to protect callen and his father and she tells him early on in season 7 the truth.
ReplyDeleteI too noticed the alley looked more like L. A. than Russia but it didn't bother me. the show doesn't have the budget to film any of the international scenes out of country. I actually think we've seen that alley before in Mexico. most tv shows do this kind of thing
ReplyDeleteSo funny, what you said about having seen that alley in Mexico- I was thinking the same thing at that moment ,that it was an international alley. I understand they do not have the budget (or time) to film internationally - I would not expect them to and I cannot remember their ever doing that but I was just saying that it was not well set dressed to be a Russian alley - they threw some Russian graffiti on the walls and that was it. And you make a good point about it being the bread crumbs leading to his father's story - but what I was saying is that we have been breadcrumbed to itsy bits and it is just flat out taking too long. I am a big fan of the show and a bigger fan of the great cast - I just wish the production would live up to that great cast's potential in execution more regularly.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you about being bread crumbed to death this season. I really believe it is because of the time and day change. it takes fans awhile to follow and it takes new fans a while to find the show. I don't think they wanted to reveal too much during the transition. even though ratings are down, they've held their own in a difficult time spot. I think they can easily take over the time slot next season with good story lines and some of the bread crumbs coming to fruition.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope you are right because that was surprisingly a pretty precipitous drop in ratings this year and I am worried about it surviving past next season if things do not start looking up. A lesser vehicle is inexplicably dancing in the ratings in its old home slot and I just am afraid LA will not get another season due to that and if it continues to drop in ratings this coming season.
ReplyDeleteyou can't compare the two, it's apples and oranges. the tuesday timeslot was 9pb an hour earlier with ncis, the #1 show as a lead in. there is no other competition to speak of at 9pm on tues. mon at 10 is much more competative. they started up against the blacklist and castle. the blacklist consistantly won the time but ncis LA either beat or tied with castle. now that black list has moved, ncis LA has consistantly won the time slot. when they haven't won they've been basically tied and they usually win total number of viewers even if they don't win the 18-49 demo. plus it is still the 5th most popular show cbs has. the show that should be worried is Castle.
ReplyDeleteMostly just thinking here in terms of my personal preference being the LA show over the NO show. And PS - I was around to watch Hill Street Blues in the day too
ReplyDeleteLook it up--- NCIS: Red
ReplyDeleteI'm also concerned that next season could be the last--mainly because several of the actors will be on the last year of their contracts, if I'm not mistaken.
ReplyDeleteUh-oh - contract negotiations after all this time on air can be tricky as the actors expect bigger paydays, knowing their characters are iconic to the series. And with ratings down, revenue will be down and it will be harder to keep the cast together.
ReplyDeleteIf she did lie, I hope that's exactly the case!
ReplyDeleteAh, yes, yes, yes. Thank you! I didn't remember a flying bus. Yes, they aired an NCIS: LA episode with Kim Raver that was a "backdoor pilot" to make it a potential new series and CBS never picked it up. I'd kind of forgotten about that. Thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteHi Tonya, Thanks for your great posts! I just started watching the show this season, and I have enjoyed reading your posts to catch up and fill in some blanks. I'm totally hooked now! Do you think I should watch the previous seasons? I think the local library has them - I just don't know if I have time! I love the stories and characters and think it would be fun to know more.
