The Player (formerly Endgame) hails from the John Fox and John Davis' Davis Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television. Set in the high-stakes world of Las Vegas, a the drama revolves around a former sniper-turned-security expert (Strike Back's Philip Winchester) who is drawn into a mysterious conspiracy that forces him to complete a series of heroic challenges in order to save innocent lives. Wesley Snipes co-stars in the drama that was considered a lock heading into this week and had been already staffing. John Rogers (The Librarians) penned the script and exec produces the drama, which has been earning rave reviews for star Winchester.
Game of Silence, considered a dark cable-type drama, marks CSI alum Carol Mendelsohn's first drama series under her new overall deal with Sony Pictures Television, with Universal Television boarding the series as a co-production. The show, which sources say is a 10-episode commitment, is based on the Turkish format Suskunlar and centers on a rising attorney (Revolution's David Lyons) on the brink of success who could lose his perfectly crafted life when his long-lost childhood friends unexpectedly reappear after 25 years. When a dark secret resurfaces, the brotherhood bands together to right the wrongs of their shared past, pushing the limits of their loyalty and quenching their thirst for revenge. Larenz Tate and Michael Raymond-James co-star in the drama penned by David Hudgins (Parenthood, Friday Night Lights). Mendelsohn, Julie Weitz and director Niels Arden Oplev exec produce.
The most interesting news is that NBC Universal took over part ownership of Game Of Silence according to Deadline. Suddenly, it becomes a lot more important to NBC.
ReplyDeleteAs for The Night Shift, a third medical drama is not needed. Good for Sony for getting it in, but best of luck scheduling it in any realistic position that will earn it more than a 1.0.
Only NBC can justify renewing The Night Shift.
ReplyDeleteWoo hoo! Thank you NBC and Sony.
ReplyDeleteThe Night shift is the pity renewal. Congrats to the fans though
ReplyDeleteso today was NBC/Fox yesterday CW/ABC......tomorrow hopefully CBS please....
ReplyDeleteYes! Game of Silence
ReplyDeleteI figured TNS would be renewed.
ReplyDelete2 at that
ReplyDeleteI like dark things, and I love Michael Raymond James from OUAT as well :) I'll give Game of Silence a try at least.
ReplyDelete"Game of Silence" sounds kinda interesting. I'm reminded of the movie "Sleepers".
ReplyDeleteomabin is going to be really happy about it. He loved Undeatable's live episode and he wanted Game of Silence.
ReplyDeleteI myself may try both The Player and Game of Silence, see how they develop
Game Of Silence really needs to go post The Voice. It's phenomenal, in my opinion, the best across all networks.
ReplyDeleteI want TMOL season 2 as well. Come on NBC! Give it to me!!!
ReplyDeleteLaura has been renewed
ReplyDeleteLaura got renewed... weird, since they are reporting 13 episodes, which puts it farther from syndication
ReplyDeleteGAME OF SILENCE!!! I am so excited about this story and series!!! rock on Silencers
ReplyDeleteNow the only shows I'm waiting to hear if they're cancelled or not is A.D: The Bible Continues, American Odyssey, The Slap, and Bates Motel.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing!
ReplyDeleteI know, a edgy story plus MRJ best of both worlds! so excited about Game of Silence
ReplyDeleteOdyssey and slap are so dead. AD might squeak a renewal out and bates motel for sure will be renewed
ReplyDeleteYeah I know most of the one's i'm wating on are very likely to not get renewed, but until an official statement on their fate, one never truely knows.
ReplyDeleteI hope Game of Silence gets a good rating, because NBC!!! -_- but David Lyons and Michael Raymond James in one series, yes please!!! *_*
ReplyDeleteGame Of Silence sounds like a good show....we'll see tho!
ReplyDeleteYeah I realized the announcement was there that minutes after typing my original comment above :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting me know as well.
Exactly. I don;t get it either.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. They must have gotten TNS quite cheap if they are willing to renew it.
ReplyDeleteIt didn't drop off that much from its first season so it was consistent at best. It only means The Voice is not a compatible with TNS.
ReplyDeleteTNS s3 might be the last too :(. Excited for Game of Silence :D. Too bad TMOL could end next year
ReplyDeleteSo happy about Undateable, should be so much fun.
ReplyDeleteI'll give Game of Silence a try, mainly for Michael Raymond-James.
So happy for Game of Silence!!
ReplyDeleteYES! for Player and GoS getting picked up!
ReplyDeleteDon't care about TNS
And with the all live episodes, I think I'm done with Undateable.
Both new shows sound intersting.
ReplyDeleteYay for Undateable! I don't care if they are Live episodes or not cause it's awesome either way!
ReplyDeleteI knew they would act while i was asleep! Anyway, very happy about all of these news, especially Game of Silence, which had long been one of mu most antecipated pilots! I am so in for that! I will also try out The Player! In returning shows land, I like Undateable more and more each week and I adores the live episode, so I am all in for this, quite happy! Finally, The Night Shift is a little, harmless show that I enjoy watching in the summer; wouldnt be a huge loss if gone but i am quite happy it gets to stick around.
ReplyDeleteAnd i gotta say... All hail Sony! Damn, they get them to do everything
because, the original turkish serie 'suskunlar' was based on sleepers. game of silence is double based :D
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way.
ReplyDeleteAll the good news happened while we were sleeping :)
But I agree, I'm happy for TNS, GOS, and a live season of Undateable.
No interest in The Player?
ReplyDeleteI managed to stay awake up until the CSI news exploded, but that was my limit.
Oh yes, I'll check out "the Player" too for Wesley Snipes, but I'm more excited for GOS. It's great that it will be limited to 10 episodes per season as far as the storyline goes, but scheduling will be an issue (unless NBC ships if to Friday 10pm Hannibal style).
ReplyDeleteI stayed awake until about 11:00pm EST, and the news broke out at around midnight EST it seems. Kinda sad I missed it haha.
Yes I am also much more interested in GOS. Depending on what lands Mondays at 10 in the fall, I wouldn't be totally shocked to see GOS paired with The Apprentice in a Deception type of schedule there. But there are way too many possibilities right now.
ReplyDeleteAhah the last few days have been so hectic around here that I've probably commented everything multiple times and everything is sick of hearing me ahah, sorry about that. But yes, I am happy about all 4 of these news, especially those two!
ReplyDeleteThey have 3 medical dramas actually.
ReplyDeleteIt is much easier to understand than Laura. Two reasons:
ReplyDelete1) Sony
2) It is very cheap, as explained by THR, even including a tax credit that significantly cuts down its costs.
It will probably be a summer show.
THR explains that TNS is very cheap, even including a tax credit that cuts its costs even further.
ReplyDeleteI woke up, so nothing was happening and went back to sleep, lol. And then boom, NBC renews some shows.
ReplyDeleteSo NBC finally got the live comedy they have been wanting for years. Guess this means no more photos, promos, sneaks peeks for this show. Less work for us at SpoilerTV, yay!
ReplyDeleteI lasted until the CSI bombs, but then I was just too tired. CBS is being extremely annoying though.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, do you think we will get official answers on A.D. and AO?
And NBC gave it to you.
ReplyDeleteOh I like that idea the best, especially since TV viewership is high in January.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Songland/Game of Silence from Jan-Feb on Monday?
Plus it's way cheaper.
ReplyDeleteYes, although I am not as sold on Songland as others are, not sure I wouldn't rather use CA. In any case, there are some problems with this alternative:
ReplyDelete- in general, I dislike much giving such a long hiatus to rookie show. I feel that it's too long out of mind for audiences to care when it is back. Fine with veteran, established shows, but with rookies I don't like it. So this could potentially hurt the Monday 10pm fall occupant, which needs to be avoided
- the timings get very complicated. 10 weeks is a big ask and when NBC did it three years ago, the voice came back super late and as a result it had to go into the summer. The winter they endured that year is also one of the most horrific periods I have memory of seeing ratings wise on any network. It was a massacre. That year, Shakira was pregnant and they really wanted her on the voice with usher for their debuts, so they endured it, but I do not think they will go for it again.
I am sure there will still be promos. NBC will promote the show.
ReplyDeleteBetween CA or Songland it's a tossup since both will probably achieve similar ratings.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the hiatus, this will be an interesting thing to consider for NBC since all of their pickups and straight to series dramas are procedurals, so a hiatus is definitely not necessary. But at the same time I don't know if NBC will risk airing a new drama without the Voice lead-in? I guess it depends on the fall performance.
NBC can get through GOS's 10 eps in 8 weeks so that's not a problem (special Sunday airing with the premier of CA or Songland + a 2 hour or 2 night finale).
So happy for Game of Silence and The Player. Honestly, I think NBC has the best pilots this year, so I wish them better luck in the fall, because last season was awfull for them.
ReplyDeleteGame of Silence sounds good and it has David Lyons as an added bonus! The Player i'm not so sure about but will probably take a peek.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea why NBC didn't announce them last night with the other shows. Same with Mulaney and Weird Loners for FOX. Maybe we'll get them today.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy that The Night Shift is renewed, I was scared there for a while. And great news about Undateable, one of the funniest shows that I watch.
ReplyDeleteI mean weekly episode promos. Obviously NBC will shoot some generic promos to promote the show.
ReplyDeleteI read the cheapness of The Night Shift and I'm not sure about it. Are they talking about dramas in general or within the medical show genre? While they hire mostly unknowns, there is multiple victims/patients which is expensive to shoot. And while New Mexico has a 30% tax credit (that's not bad), it's not the cheapest place to shoot. Chicago has a 35% tax credit, Atlanta has a 34% tax credit (why not 35% is anyone's guess), and Vancouver/Toronto has a 40% tax credit when you factor in the currency conversion.
ReplyDeleteI'd guess Heartbreaker will be cheaper shooting in Vancouver and owned by NBC Universal than The Night Shift.
I think FOX is trying to pretend as if Weird Loners and Mulaney never existed lol.
ReplyDeleteBut in regards to NBC Sunday, I could see them going with the BS that nothing has been decided yet, since the lineup is still pretty new and will be running for a few more weeks.
Ha, no kidding! I'm gonna have to have a marathon of all these movies that inspired my fall TV choices - "Sleepers", "Limitless", "Minority Report".
ReplyDeleteYeah, someone pointed that out earlier. It just makes the whole thing more baffling. Medical procedurals aren't nearly as successful as law enforcement procedurals so the odds of landing the next Grey's or ER is very slim. It doesn't stop the broadcast networks from trying though.
ReplyDeleteI find it odd because as far as I remember the genre had been relatively dead in the last few years with the biggest efforts being low priority things like The Night Shift or A Gifted Man. Then, all of the sudden, NBC and CBS decided to jump into it big time this season. Seems random.
ReplyDeleteThe networks never stopped shopping for medical shows. It's just that most of the pilots they order never get a series pickup.
ReplyDeleteDisappointed that Love Is A Four Letter Word didn't get picked up by NBC, I think it was a big mistake...very good pilot, very different!
ReplyDeleteand i must watch sleepers and our series suskunlar before game of silence. i hope it doesnt cancel after season 2 like suskunlar
