2nd July 2019 - Andy Muschietti in Talks to Direct; Christina Hodson Eyed to Pen Script
Andy Muschietti, the filmmaker behind the hit Stephen King adaptation It and the upcoming It: Chapter Two, is in talks to direct the action-adventure project based on the DC Comics superhero. His partner and sister, Barbara Muschietti, will produce. joining Michael Disco on the project.
John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who wrote drafts of the script and were slated to direct the project, have moved on, however, Ezra Miller, the actor who has long been attached to star as the fleet-footed hero, remains on board to star.
But in further development, the studio won’t be moving forward with the script Miller co-wrote with comics author Grant Morrison. Instead, Warners will hire Christina Hodson, the scribe behind Bumblebee and the studio's upcoming DC movie, the Margot Robbie-fronted Birds of Prey, to tackle the script. The goal is to be in prep by January 2020.
16th March 2019 - Ezra Miller to Take Turn at Penning Script with Grant Morrison; Miller's Contract to Expire in May and May Exit if Script Isn't Agreed Upon
Ezra Miller is taking a stab at writing the script for the Warner Bros. project, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. He has teamed up with Grant Morrison, the acclaimed comics author, to pen a draft that could determine if he stays on as star, playing crimefighter Barry Allen.
John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have a light hearted approach whilst Miller is said to want a darker take on the material. Miller’s holding deal on Flash expires May.
The two sides have been working on compromises since last year but Miller took the initiative to tackle the story himself. He partnered with Morrison, with Warners hiring the two to script their take.
16th October 2018 - Production Delayed Until Late 2019; Release Date Pushed
Warner Bros. is pushing back the start of filming on the studio’s still untitled standalone Flash film, sources tell Variety. The film never received a formal greenlight nor did it have a set release date, but it had been expected to begin shooting in March. However, a script is still being tweaked and the studio thinks that it won’t enough time to get the script in shape in order for the film to make its original start date.
That’s a problem, because Ezra Miller, the live-wire performer tasked with playing the Flash, also has a key supporting role in “Fantastic Beasts,” the “Harry Potter” spin-off series. The third film in the franchise begins shooting in July, which would cause scheduling headaches. The standalone Flash film is now expected to commence production in late 2019. That likely means the superhero adventure won’t debut in theaters until some time in 2021.

13th June 2018 - Production Begins Early 2019; Back to the Future Serving As Inspiration
The Flash, which will finally begin production in early 2019 with Ezra Miller starring, has abandoned the somber themes it had been expected to tackle. The film now has the Game Night team of John Francis Daly and Jonathan Goldstein on board, and it's looking to Back to the Future as a touchstone.

“Vacation” helmers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are in negotiations to direct “Flashpoint,” the Flash’s standalone feature starring Ezra Miller.
Warner Bros. had no comment.
The studio had initially courted Ben Affleck to return to the director’s chair, but he eventually passed on the gig. By tapping Daley and Goldstein, the studio seems to eye a comedic tone for the film, given the duo’s directing background on pics like “Vacation” and the upcoming “Game Night” starring Jason Bateman.

During Warner Bros’ Comic-Con session, a sizzle reel revealed the logos of the studio’s upcoming slate and their potential titles including Shazam, Suicide Squad 2, The Batman (with Ben Affleck’s Batman shown), Justice League Dark, Batgirl, Green Lantern Corps, The Flash — followed by a Flashpoint logo, and last, Wonder Woman II.

Warner Bros.’s big-screen take on The Flash has narrowed down it's search to three directors: Matthew Vaughn, Robert Zemeckis and Sam Raimi have all met in recent weeks and are each strong contenders for the gig.

26th January 2017 - Joby Harold to Reimagine the Script
Joby Harold has been hired by Warner Bros. to reimagine the script, EW has learned. The move comes after director Rick Famuyiwa (Dope) left the Ezra Miller-led movie back in October.

1st November 2016 - Director Exits Again
Rick Famuyiwa, who made waves with his coming-of-age Sundance sensation Dope, has parted ways with the studio over "creative differences," The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment’s “The Flash” movie has hit another big speed bump: sources tell Variety that director Rick Famuyiwa has left the project.
It is unclear why the “Dope” director left the film, but this now marks the second helmer to exit the pic following Seth Grahame-Smith’s departure earlier this year.
Warner Bros. had no comment on the news.
The move comes as a shock, given that pre-production for the film is already in high gear, and production was set to start in early 2017. The project was also far along in casting, most recently adding Kiersey Clemons to play Iris West and Billy Crudup to play Barry Allen’s father.
The movie was scheduled to be released on March 16, 2018. It’s currently unknown if this latest detour will force start of production and the release date to be moved.

9th September 2016 - Billy Crudup in Talks to Play Henry Allen
After playing Dr. Manhattan in the Warner Bros. film “Watchmen,” Billy Crudup is now looking to reunite with the studio on one of their highly anticipated comic book movies.
Sources tell Variety Crudup is in talks to play the father of Barry Allen (aka the Flash) in the upcoming Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment film, which stars Ezra Miller as the title character.

17th August - Cyborg to Appear
Cyborg will appear in “The Flash,” sources tell Variety.
It’s not known how substantial a role the hero will play in the film. But it’s another signal of DC Comics and Warner Bros.’ ambitions to build a sprawling, cinematic universe to compete with Marvel Studios, one where heroes and villains will pop up in solo spinoff adventures, as well as lend support to other costumed allies. Cyborg’s appearance in “The Flash” and next year’s “Justice League” are intended to whet audiences’ interest in the character, building toward a potential, standalone “Cyborg” film in 2020.
Ray Fisher, a newcomer best known for his stage work, has played Cyborg and his alter-ego Victor Stone. He made a small cameo appearance in last spring’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” DC released “Suicide Squad” this summer and will debut a “Justice League” film and “Wonder Woman” in 2017.
A spokesman for Warner Bros. declined to comment.

25th July - Kiersey Clemons to Star as Iris West
Kiersey Clemons has closed a deal to star opposite Ezra Miller in “The Flash” movie.
Variety first reported earlier this month that she was the top choice for the female lead in the Warner Bros. film.
Insiders reveal that Clemons is likely to play Iris West, the tough-as-nails journalist and friend of Barry Allen, the alter ego of the Flash.
“The Flash” had to overcome the hurdle of replacing the film’s original director, Seth Grahame-Smith, who parted ways with the project over creative differences. The movie, however, appears to be able to meet its start date. Production is expected to commence sometime this year.
The studio is keeping Smith’s most recent draft of the script, which is based on a treatment by Chris Miller and Phil Lord.

Sources tell Variety that Famuyiwa’s top choice for the female lead in “The Flash” is Kiersey Clemons, who also starred in Famuyiwa’s critically acclaimed dramedy “Dope.“

3rd June 2016 - Rick Famuyiwa Added as Director
Barry Allen’s solo on-screen adventure is getting a tune-up. The popular DC Comics character The Flash will have Sundance darling Rick Famuyiwa now at its helm. According to two sources, the director of Dope is in negotiations to join the DC Comics multi-verse, helming his first big-production flick starring Ezra Miller as the titular hero.
The news comes just a little more than a month after DC and author Seth Grahame-Smith parted ways over what was to be Grahame-Smith’s directorial debut. After Warner Bros. fledgling subsidiary DC Films stumbled on Batman vs. Superman, it decided to take a closer look at who was in charge of each upcoming film.
Famuyiwa is no veteran to big-budget movies but he has made four films, including the 2015 Sundance darling Dope. His other credits include Brown Sugar, The Wood, and Our Family Wedding. He also co-wrote the 2007 film Talk to Me and most recently directed the HBO movie Confirmation, starring Kerry Washington as Anita Hill. The Flash will mark the biggest budget effort yet for the 42-year old Nigerian-American filmmaker.

30th April 2016 - Director Exits
Warner Bros will need to find a new director for The Flash, as Pride And Prejudice And Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter author Seth Grahame-Smith has left the super hero tentpole film over creative differences, Deadline has confirmed. Grahame-Smith first became attached to direct the film in October, speeding past candidates that included WB’s original choice, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who are still on as producers.
We’re told Grahame-Smith will remain involved in the production despite leaving the director’s chair, and that an immediate search for a replacement is under way. (Lord and Miller will not be in the running however, as we’re hearing their dance card is too full with the Han Solo stand alone movie to direct The Flash.) There’s still plenty of time, as The Flash is (for now) scheduled for release in 2018 as the sixth installment of the DC Extended Universe (WB’s answer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe).
Warner Bros was taking an enormous chance on Grahame-Smith, who would have made his directorial debut with The Flash. Whether WB will hand the reigns of the film over to another green recruit remains to be seen, today’s news comes amid continuing rumors of a major shake-up with its DC Comics-based films following the divided critical and audience reception to Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

22nd March 2016 - Why Grant Gustin Wasn't Cast
Zack Snyder’s decision to not hire Grant Gustin as the Flash for the upcoming Justice League movies might have surprised some fans. But the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director explains why the star of The CW series was never in the running to reprise his role on the big screen.
“I just don’t think it was a good fit,” he told the New York Daily News. “I’m very strict with this universe, and I just don’t see a version where … that (tone is) not our world.”
While the DC Comics films are known for their dark and serious tone, The CW’s superhero series The Flash and Arrow feature more levity.
“Even if Grant Gustin is my favorite guy in the world and he’s very good, we made a commitment to the multi-verse (idea),” Snyder continued, “so it’s just not a thing that’s possible.”

Speeding past several other candidates, Warner Bros is close to choosing Pride And Prejudice And Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter author Seth Grahame-Smith to write and direct its 2018 superhero film The Flash. We’ve confirmed the deal isn’t done but that talks are very close to completion.
Warner Bros’ reported previous choice to bring the Fastest Man Alive into movie theaters was The Lego Movie duo of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, now attached to direct the Han Solo stand-alone Star Wars film for Lucasfilm/Disney.

8th July 2015 - May Be Impacted By Disney's Han Solo Film
Unclear is how their commitment to the Han Solo origin story will impact Lord and Miller’s schedule. The duo became a hot property following their witty take on the buddy cop genre with 21 Jump Street, and hotter still with 2014’s Lego Movie, which included a spectrum of geek icons from Batman to Star Wars.
They were to develop a Flash feature for Warners as a directing vehicle, but now that is likely off the table. As is a third Jump Street movie. However, they could stay on as writers or producers on those projects.

20th May 2015 - Film Flash Believed To Be Barry Allen
Filmmaker Phil Lord (The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street) recently chatted about his plans for plotting Warner Bros.' big screen rendition of The Flash, as well as the recently announced animated Spider-Man movie he's producing for Sony.
While appearing on the Hippojuice podcast, Lord confirmed that his feature film version of the DC superhero will indeed be Barry Allen, the same incarnation used on The CW's The Flash.
"We’re trying to break a story. It’s interesting, because there’s a really popular TV show out there, and we’re trying to carve out space for the movie that’s apart from that. I think we’re doing alright," said Lord (via /Film). "I believe [our Flash] is going to be Barry Allen."

15th October 2014 - Ezra Miller Cast As The Flash
Slowly but surely, Warner Bros. and DC Comics are filling out the ranks of their big screen Justice League. We've known for a while now that Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot are playing Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, respectively, and rumors have suggested actors like Jason Momoa and Ray Fisher will be taking parts like Aquaman and Cyborg. There are still a few names that have not yet been revealed, but today we have news of another huge casting announcement: Ezra Miller will be playing the first live-action feature film version of Barry Allen, better known to most as The Flash.

15th October 2014 - WB Announces DC Film Slate
A Warner Bros shareholder meeting on Wednesday brought with it a plethora of announcements from the company. CEO Kevin Tsujihara officially announced WB’s schedule of tentpole films including DC Comics, Harry Potter, and LEGO franchises.
Filling in all those question marks from a couple of months ago, the new Warner Bros schedule shows some obvious films like Wonder Woman and Justice League, and even announces Cyborg and what is presumably a Green Lantern reboot. Also in the presentation and press release, two major pieces of casting were included. Ezra Miller will star as the movie version of The Flash, putting to rest any speculation of the TV and movie universes being joined. Jason Momoa, long rumored for the role of Aquaman, was confirmed as well. It should be noted, this is not their full schedule of DC Comics movies. The press release reads that these are "at least 10 movies" and that the full line-up will also include "stand-alone Batman and Superman films" that aren't on this initial schedule.

ReplyDeleteDoes it make me a bad person that The Flash is one of my favorite TV shows but that I have zero interest whatsoever in this project? I truly cannot believe they will be able to find a better Flash than Grant Gustin an the TV show truly is everything I could have wanted it to be (and then some). I just don't feel the need to see other people play the characters that, in my mind, are already being played by the "correct" people and change the universe I love and adore. I wish best of luck to the movie and all but it doesn't appeal to me at all.

ReplyDeleteI've already seen some people on 4chan concerned that WB will make them pull The Flash show eventually. When this movie is released, The Flash should have 4 seasons and enough episodes for syndication. WB would be absolutely crazy to do so, but it's WB...they've done much worse.
Although I've seen some theorize that they may cycle through the other Flash's. They've already mentioned wanting to bring in Wally and Bart, plus we saw Jay's helmet...
They're not canning it for sure, there's money involved so I'm going with the cycling through other Flash's theory.

I so don't care for a Flash movie. DC's just desperate for money, and they are just throwing ideas to the wall, trying to see what will stick. They already have a Flash show, they can't top that with a two hour movie. Maybe if it was a different Flash(Wally, Bart Allen), maybe that would work.

Let's remain realistic there: the Flash/Arrow TV universe is fun.
ReplyDeleteNothing overly impressive but not bad either, it's a mixed bag. Some parts of it are great, others not so much. And who's to say that these movies are going to be bad?
The only issue I have is that DC is limiting its own potential success by being to coy to take a risk
I wouldn't go as far as calling them BAD movies when we haven't seen them yet, but yeah the DC TV Universe is growing and they just confirmed Supergirl as part of the Flarrowverse it's just going to get bigger. Why can't the DC Cinematic Universe be the same as the MCU, you know NO restrictions AT ALL

ReplyDeletethat's the thing though: a movie is gong to create millions (if not billions). A TV show isn't really going to pull in that much.
ReplyDeleteSome solid ad prices on theCW are still not enough to keep up with the potential income for your big budget movie.
I get why they're making movies based on their property, it's going to generate a loooooot of money. But cutting other media-ventures for that property isn't smart at all. The TV verse is still generating SOME money
(for example: Agents of SHIELD is not generating much money for Marvel, the reason they'll keep in running though is because it's a way of advertising their movies while actually making some money from it as well. Win-Win. DC is afraid that its TV universe will create confusion and negative buzz for their big movies. Why negative buzz? Because they probably are still following the old "TV is the lesser medium" mentality)

ReplyDeleteThe official wording on the universe/crossover status is that while it is in the contract that they can crossover they need permission from both sides to do so. The CBS president nixed the idea by mentioning they were keeping Supergirl to themselves.
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't mean it wont ever happen, but currently they're separate. It makes more sense for Supergirl to be separated anyway considering the plot. Otherwise they'd have to explain why no one has mentioned Superman. (So again, if they do crossover, Supergirl is probably in another universe connected via the multiverse).
So how Badly is DC gonna screw the TVShow if in fact they do Barry Allen as the movie flash?

ReplyDeleteThe big introduction is probably Jay Garrick. I believe we might be getting a 'Flash Of Two Worlds' episode early next season. Possibly that's when Vandal Savage will be introduced to lead into LoT. In some versions of his origin he comes from Earth 2, the same place as Jay Garrick. That would also fit into the theory that the 'Jay' they cast for LoT is really a black version of Jay Garrick.

Ughhhh I swear i hate DC more than half the time. I hope right down to the pit of my stomach that they do NOT use Barry Allen. Use Jay, use Wally, just don't use Barry.

ReplyDeleteIt dragged things out way too long. For example people wanted to see Clark fly rather then tease it every season.
ReplyDeleteThey also had lots of plans that fans were interested in but DC kept blocking for one reason or another. Most of those plans revolved around Batman who DC wouldn't let them use. After the show ended, DC decided to introduce Batman in the follow up comic.

ReplyDeleteBut shouldn't they have expected that? the premise of the show was that it was an ORIGIN story about Clark Kent becoming Superman, not Superman flying around saving people. It was the road that this person who felt like he never belonged found a home and people who cared about him, who THEN became the best superhero in the world. So i don't understand why people wanted to fast-forward to Superman, if they just wanted that, they could've just watched the animated series they had.

ReplyDeleteGone was the iconic imagery (the suit, his flight, ect) along with many elements long time fans had come to relate to Superman. While it worked at redefining the characters origins, it still angered people because of how different it was. They wanted them to hurry up and bring him to that character many had known for years.
A similar thing happens with Arrow. Because of how different the adaption is compared to the Green Arrow people have known previously it has people who dislike it.
Huh i guess i understand that, like when i first saw Arrow i wouldn't even begin to see it because i spent years seeing Justin Hartley as the Green Arrow and also the fact that this Green Arrow killed. But calling it bad because they wanted to tell his story in its ENTIRETY is uncalled for.

Thing is though I think Wally's still more popular so it's weird that they won't piggyback off that. But Geoff Johns' is DC's creative officer and he wrote Flash: Rebirth (which as great as it is does shill to Barry's character- Jay literally says Barry Allen made me the Flash), so I'm not surprised that it's Barry.

ReplyDeleteYou are correct and the key words here is Clark Kent, DC were in a battle over the superman rights, so they brought in the the "no flights no tights" rule for Smallville. the story had to be of Clark Kent not Superman for WB and DC to not break the legal issues at the time, but its what made the show.

Marvel have a better movie structure now, but they have also had there fails as well. DC have better TV shows, I did like Daredevil, but movies is where the coin is and Iron man and the avengers are hard to beat movies. Its funny cause it was the Justice League that gave Marvel their break when Stan Lee used The JL group of superheros concept to create the Fantastic Four and in the 80's DC did another crossover comic to help them out of financial trouble.

That never bothered me because i knew i was seeing a show about the human inside the alien: Clark Kent. I loved seeing him be human in his hometown with his friends and falling in love and saving his town. I don't get why it bothered people when they knew that at the end

ReplyDeleteI enjoy the fact Superman killed someone because it created the potential for the start of his promise to always find another way. He was emotionally defeated over killing Zod and living with the consequences will clearly branch off into the next movie.
ReplyDeleteI believe they found another director within a week. Also filming is set to begin before BvS is released so they'll pretty much have SS and WW filmed even if BvS somehow bombs. The problem was that the original director wanted to full fantasy/mythological and DC wanted it more grounded.

ReplyDeleteHarley Quinn seems poised to join Bats and Supes by the look of things. She's always had a big fanbase but the past few years she's absolutely blown up. Supposedly in late 2014 she was selling more figurines and comics then Superman.

OK. Thanks for clearing that up. When you said DC loves to f*ck themselves I took it to mean that they're not experiencing success. The fact that they're making a lot of money means that they clearly are successful which in the business world is the ONLY thing that matters. Everything else is a nice to have.
ReplyDeleteSo you're mainly talking about taste: on what is "good". If that's the case then sorry to have to break it to you but the shows coming out of the CW are not good. They're barely passable as entertainment which is to say they produce a smile and chuckle here and there but are far from high standard. Its fast food TV. Shows like Arrow and Flash are trite, predictable and overall targeted to those of lesser sophistication and education. Nothing wrong with that. Dumb people need to be entertained too.

ReplyDeleteYeah I understand. Don't get me wrong I completely understand people's sentiments. Marvel is doing it better than DC. That is not in dispute. Ultimately that doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is putting people in the theater seats and making money. That is the first, middle and ending of it. WB and DC aren't producing as many films but those that they are producing are making a lot of money. Period. They can fling as much shit on as many walls as they want and appear rudderless, aimless or as disorganized as they want. If people keep buying movie tickets that's it. End of story.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I keep coming back to the money is that regardless of how many people keep complaining that DC should unite their movie and TV universes; so long as people keep buying the product, they won't give two shits what an average 0.9 rating of 18-49 demo consisting of only 3 million viewers cares. They could give a crap.
You know, if DC is so hell bend on keeping TV and movies apart, so much so they're pulling successful and popular characters from the shows with the mere excuse they they "have other plans" for said properties, they should just stick to that, leave Barry alone on TV and make Wally the movie Flash.

No I agree with you Grant Gustin has really grown on me I see him as Barry Allen now. Although I like Ezra Miller as an actor and I would be really curious to see his interpretation of Barry Allen. It is still just weird though that the show would likely be on when this movie comes out at the same time. Seems like it would confuse people especially if you watch both depending upon what version of The Flash from the comics they choose to go with for the movie. I don't know quite how to feel about this movie in development I want to like it and support the cast but I don't want it to affect the show in anyway either especially since the show was there first.
ReplyDeleteI don't really watch Smallville except for the occasional episodes. But based on what I read on TV trope (which may or may not be entirely accurate), the biggest problem people had with Smallville was Lana, she was a Creator's Pet and a Mary Sue, hogged too much screen time and her plot was generally repetitive and filled with obnoxious aesops. All this made her a great turn-off for fans of the show. There's also the fact that CW's president at the time Dawn Ostroff openly hated Smallville and was out to kill it. This led to a drop in quality in later seasons.

ReplyDeleteYeah. Think about it, we were presented with a Superman who never made the choice to become a superhero essentially. The moment he found out about his abilities he was faced with the decision to stay hidden or turn himself into Zod, and he went with the latter. He never thought about what his powers could be used for and he had a really terrible choice to make. I think it's nice that he will deal with the outcome and use that as a reason to always find another solution other than murder.
ReplyDeleteyeah, I agree. the problem is that sales of ticket/DVD etc.. is not because the movies are good but people have hope they will be or that they will see the character/story they love and never do. so that racks up sales/money even if it is crap.
