Welcome back to Last Week in TV, where despite many shows ending (both for the season and series) I am still behind. But hey, at least the column wasn't delayed this time. While I did get more caught up on Poldark, I still haven't seen the season finale so I'm postponing my review on it another week. I also have zero interest in Castiel and Claire's family drama so, even though it is rare for me, I will probably skip last week's episode altogether and just pick up Supernatural again this week. I also need to catch up on The Royals, AD, Elementary, and Young & Hungry, most on which I will marathon later. So how are you doing at staying caught up with your shows? Do you need the brief hiatus between spring and summer shows to marathon like I do? Speaking of marathoning, I am adding this week's nominated show, Merlin, to my marathon list. It was the best show I've seen this week even if it can't win Show of the Week due to it airing years ago. This week's nominated show has me nervous because I am staunchly anti-antiheroes and antiheroes don't come any bigger than Dexter. Show of the Week:
This episode is a great example of why I love The Goldbergs. Every time Coach was on screen I laughed until I had to catch my breath but it also had more heart than most hour-long dramas. I adore how Barry is so supportive of both Erica and Laney when they aren't exactly looking like themselves. It's part of the charm of a character that can sometimes be written as overly obnoxious. In this episode he is a clear hero, not only doing letting his sister crash his TV date but also making sure she wasn't blocked by someone the producer felt was prettier. It was a sweet gesture by both Barry and Laney. Still his speech to Erica about how he never wants her to feel like a dork was even better. In fact, it was the best scene of the night. I also love how Murray reminded Adam of how much Pops does with him so that Adam can continue to admire Pops but with a bit clearer eyes. As always, The Goldbergs does the best job of making me laugh but also giving me a reason to watch in the first place. The character interactions are golden.

Nominated Episode:
Now that was one exciting ride. Granted, I didn't know what was happening in some places since I went from the pilot to episode 3.12 and I might be confusing some of these characters. Like Gwen. Is she Guinevere and if so, why is she siding with Morgana? That makes no sense. Also, I get that Merlin is hiding his magical powers from the sundry but does Arthur know he has them? He never showed his powers while Arthur was looking so I can't be sure. Then there's Morgana. Her identity was a secret? I thought it was widely known that she was Arthur's half-sister. Oh well. Slight confusion aside, this was a packed plot, moving quickly from one catastrophe to the next. Yes, it was very predictable. I mean who didn't know that Arthur was going to lose the Holy Grail the second he got it. But it was a great ride, scenes seamlessly moving from one adventure to the next. I especially liked the friendship between Arthur and Merlin, like many suggested I would. It's the kind of bromance that makes every quest better and the playful, snarky banter between them is fantastic. I cannot wait to watch 3.13 since this is quite the cliffhanger to leave off on.

New Show:
To say this is not the comedy for me might be the greatest understatement of the TV season. From ALL the cursing to the sex with a beloved animated advertising character, I'm not putting episode 1.02 on my to-watch list. It has that kind of pretentious air complete with references to Samuel Beckett and Camus that is likely to get it labeled a thinking man's comedy, but really means glacial pace and not remotely funny. At the foundation is Thomas Payne, an aptly named 44-year-old marketing executive whose bleak world outlook is made even worse by the hiring of two 20-somethings to be his new bosses. He's a middle aged man fighting for survival in a hipster world and even the presence of his newly bought skinny jeans can't disguise how uncomfortable his world has gotten. In other words it's an comedic take on the generation gap but unlike Younger, this one is more discomfiting than funny and the younger generation does not even come off as sympathetic. Pass.

Weekly Shows:
Procedurals always take a step forward when the case of the week is personal. By making this one about Danny's murdered parents, they gave another glance into Guz's history and unleashed a wealth of back story. I never would have guessed that she came from an abusive family or that it caused her to turn to alcohol. While I think it would have behooved her to share this info with Danny a long time ago, it created one of the best scenes in Battle Creek so far. I love that when she confesses her past to Danny and reaches out her hand to him, he grabs her hand too. It's a reconciliation likely to be fraught with hard times and setbacks, like any addiction, but I like that they are now in it together. I hope we continue to get updates on how Danny is doing for the remainder of the show, which sadly won't be too long from now. I'll miss Battle Creek, although I won't miss Russ, who still acts like a child and a douche alternately.

What I like about Stalker most is how strong a character Beth is. She's not my favorite character but she is well-rounded in a way few female cops are. She is the victim but she never plays the victim. What I mean is that they've allowed her to be vulnerable and scared when under attack. They allow her to feel and cry and all those pesky emotions that female cops, especially earlier, were never allowed to do because they were playing the tough guy in a man's world. It makes the character feel real. Yet, she doesn't let it become her. Beth full-on takes down the psycho who killed her family while having her hands handcuffed behind her. That is a straight up kick butt women and probably the best action sequence of the month. She's smart and absolutely never the damsel in distress that has to be rescued, but she doesn't shunt off help anymore either. For those who hated Stalker on principal as being misogynistic, you really missed out on a powerful, empathetic, smart female character. It's a shame that the dreadful pilot (and it was dreadful) caused people to turn away. This is a great example of how much better a show can get if you give it time. Sadly, it will never get a season 2 to prove itself.

The "I've Seen Too Much TV for This" Award - No body, no death. No matter how implausible it is that the villain could escape, if there's no body then you can't really consider them dead. If it's a genre show, even with a body you can't count them out unfortunately.
Worst Plan - Coming up with a plan and then constantly looking in the direction of where you're going to go when a psycho has abducted you. Look anywhere else, Beth.
Most Fun - Ray really did sound like he was a fun date before he went all stalker and psycho
Biggest PSA - Never let a stranger into your house EVER!
The "You Tell Him" Award - Janice tells Jack to stop whining about who's in charge and do something to find Beth
Biggest Busybody - Hazel, who barges into the cabin without being asked and ends up getting killed for it
The "That Makes Zero Sense" Award - Why would the one mailbox not be with the entire row of other mailboxes? Could the person not go the extra 20 feet when their place is in the middle of nowhere? It's not like they wouldn't be driving or hiking down to the road anyway.
Worst First Aid - Beth, take your shirt off and use it as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding
Most Suspicious - The cabin they walk into is unlocked. Even in the middle of nowhere, I find that highly unusual.

And here when I dropped Helix, I thought I was done with killer rats. Nothing like a zombie rat to get other rats cowering in the corner. Still that's a positive sign providing no one gets bitten or scratched. Maybe Ravi really will find a cure. As for the case, I thought this one was handled pretty well for having already seen it in a thousand other shows before. I like the new perspective Liv got from the pregnant victim, especially since it helped her bond with her mother. Evan, though, is probably wondering why he suddenly has 2 moms. I also love how Liv and Lowell have to maneuver around them both having brain-controlled personality changes. What isn’t working for me is Major. Since when would he break into someone's car? That seems too rash and quite frankly dumb for his character. He could lose his job over this. They either need to put him in the know or get him out of this plot altogether.

Biggest Hmm - I don't get it. Were the kidnappers in league with Blaine and therefore not really dead after all or did the lieutenant find a way to plant evidence of all the missing kids out there? Wouldn't that take the actual bodies? Ones with missing brains that would be autopsied. Also how would they get them out there without the rest of the police force knowing? This all sounds like shenanicanon.

This is another win for The Flash, mostly because they have fleshed Harrison Wells/Eobard Thawne so well. I love that there is a hint of intense personal connection between them. Whatever happened in the future, it was enough to make Eobard cross time to try to get rid of his nemesis. Even better, Barry doesn't know what started this chain of events. Sure, the time travel stuff makes no sense and the whole "creating your own nemesis" thing is a thousand times facepalm. Still the way that Wells can turn on a dime from pep talking Barry into saving people's lives to boldly announcing his eternal hatred for him is chilling and utterly fascinating. This is why he will always be a better villain than Malcolm Merlyn, who was just another overreaching cartoon villain on Arrow. Harrison does have some equally bad dialogue, but he overcomes it and makes it powerful instead of hokey. This is the comic show standoff I am most looking forward to and I know that it will be great. Just like almost everything The Flash has done this season. What a freshman start!

7. Joe: "I'm not following." Barry: "Alright what if that day Cisco found out that Wells is Reverse Flash and then Wells killed him, but when I ran back a day I changed the timeline so that event never happened?" Joe: "If it never happened, how could Cisco remember it?"
I have to admit that this episode surprised me. I should have seen the twist coming but I guessed the wrong culprit. I thought it was the girl's dad and not the girl herself. If I had remembered that he didn't go into the airport to see her off, I wouldn't have missed it. I also missed that Krumitz broke the law for an illegal search in order to catch the teen. Well done, CSI: Cyber. I'm not usually fooled twice. The third surprise I'm filing under TV logic though. No way a senator, even one in a scandal, doesn't have enough clout to keep a cyber hacker in jail. That Willa was released without jail time seems a bit naïve for the situation. Everyone knows that a hacker can do massive damage and be more dangerous than a murderer in the right situation. The fact that she shows no remorse also makes her a sociopath so letting her out without consequences is going to come back to haunt them.

This episode starts off fairly typical but then turns surprisingly emotional at the end and I'm still not sure how I feel about that. It was a lot of emoangsting in a usually funny show. I am clear that Backstrom was one of the biggest surprises of the 2014-2015 TV season for me. I dreaded watching the pilot because I am not a fan of anti-hero pricks and that's all the promos made Backstrom out to be. Surprisingly I liked the pilot and especially the characters. I've not seen a more diverse team on any cop show and I don't mean the casting. And that's what made it so awesome. The interactions between them as they've stepped up to carry one another has enriched the genre and the overall humor made it easier to skim over Backstrom's more flagrant obnoxiousness. So is the fact that the team and Valentine call him out on it. In the end, I am really sorry that this show did not catch on with people. It's the rare cop show with actual heart and I will miss the characters a lot. I wish all involved the best and thank them all for making my week better for having been entertained by them. So long Special Unit team. So long Valentine and Deb. May you live forever on streaming and in fan fic.

This is my favorite Big Bang Theory episode so far this year and the first time it's been in contention for Show of the Week. It's all because of the mothers. I have always adored when Mary Cooper is on the show. Even when I don't see her, like the episode where Sheldon and Penny are in an escalating prank fight, she is golden. She often puts Sheldon in his place, which is another reason to love her. Beverly Hofstadter is harder for me. I don't believe in Freudian psychology so a lot of what she says is nonsense to me and it usually goes for bathroom humor. I think I was as nervous about the two moms meeting as their children were but it ended up being golden. I loved the Mary versus Beverly verbal smack down in the living room. Both actresses did a masterful job and Penny trying to settle things down was perfect. I believe in the power of the facepalm and so I laughed throughout. Here's hoping that Beverly can unwind a bit and give Leonard the love he deserves. Initially I was annoyed when the show turned from the mothers to Howard and friends cleaning, but the Annie sing-a-long was fantastic too.

To be honest, the best part of this episode for me was confirmation that both Mama Grimm and Trubel will return in the last couple of episodes. It was a huge mistake sending Trubel off and I hope they've realized that now. Fair warning - if they kill off Mama Grimm or Trubel but leave Juliette or Adalind, I will be the one howling for vengeance. It will also kill off any interest I still have in Grimm. Stop getting rid of the best characters and leaving the most annoying ones, Grimm writers. As for this episode, I cannot believe what I am seeing. They are actually trying to redeem Adalind's character. In one episode, the main characters go from rightfully hating Adalind for what she's done to listening to her whining with some sympathy to actually worrying about her. I'm sorry but that's not going to happen with me. Redeem her all you want. Ignore the fact that she's the most self-centered and selfish character on the show, which has nothing to do with being a hexenbiest by the way. Take her completely out of character and even make her the new Juliette. I don't care. I'm never going to want Princess Pity Party anything but dead. This character should have gone long ago. Still with HexenJuliette doing her own screeching, it's a tie on which character needs to die most for me. On the plus side, we did get Bud at his most delightfully tongue tied. Not happy about the hints that Renard is Jack the Ripper incarnate though.

You can get Rosalee to somewhat sympathize with her. It's still not going to make me want Adalind any less dead even if you make her the new Juliette. Adalind is way past her expiration date. Kill her.

The Messengers is becoming more intriguing the more the characters' individual loose ends are being tied up. As a bunch of different stories loosely tied together, it doesn't work. As a group that understands it has a common mission and accepts that, it moves forward rapidly. Now the Raul's family drama ended in explosion, hopefully he will unite with the others leaving only Vera as the skeptic. It's also why she is the worst character so far. Still it's Rose who is the biggest mystery. She knows more than the others, that's for sure and yet she's doling out info piecemeal. I don't get it when this is certainly an example of the more you know the easier it will be. For instance, they all need to know what the devil looks like and yet when he appears, she doesn't point him out. It's like she wants them to meet him on their own and fall for his schemes. Maybe that's the point but it feels counterintuitive right now. Overall though, this show keeps getting better with this episode by far the best. Here's hoping the CW allows it to run its course.

Cancellation and Renewal Predictions:
It's upfront season again when we will know whether our favorite shows are coming back or not. Since everyone and their cousin are predicting what will and will not be cancelled, I thought I'd join in. Mind you, this is NOT what I want to happen but what I expect will. At the end, I put my scorecard of the wins, losses, and tossups of the season for me. With 11 losses, this is a bigger cancellation season for me than usual. Last year most of my favorite comedies got slaughtered but this year it's all about the dramas sadly.

Supernatural -
I actually liked this episode. I didn't cringe at Claire or Cas. I love Cas's interactions with Sam. There were 2 really different scenes between Sam/Claire and Dean/Claire that I liked. Claire was really toned down in this episode.
The Flash-
Tom Cavanagh is just so good, Harrison is a villain I love to watch.
I still haven't watched anymore of The Messengers yet, and I love iZombie more with every episode. Ravi is so fun to watch and it's great to see Bradley James on TV again.

ReplyDeleteMy TV week was pretty good but it usually picks up during May sweeps as everyone races to their finales. It's a time of great twists and even better action - everything I love. Sadly this is also the time that shows get renewed and cancelled. At the bottom of the column I've listed my predictions, mostly so I had it on record. Any you disagree with? I've also given my annual TV scorecard, which shows just how out of sync I am with Nielsen America. I always have a bunch of my favorites cancelled but it's more this year than normal. Are there any shows you are really going to miss? Any shows you're delighted to see returning?
That episode of Merlin was fantastic. I see that the IMDb crowd picked the next episode as one of the best of the series so I am excited to watch it too. Of course, I can't get to it right now but it is in the top of my summer marathon list. Here's hoping the rest of the series is as fast moving and exciting as this episode was.
ReplyDeleteSPN - I really dislike Cas and all the angels so I just don't think this episode is for me. I am glad to hear that Claire was toned down though. She was beating Krissy for most annoying teen on the show for me. So did anything of importance happen that I need to know for the rest of the season?
Flash - Wells is one of the few villains I don't hope gets taken out at the end of the season. Generally on today's comic shows, I find the villains lame or annoying and I can't wait for them to die so the writers can try again. Wells I hoep stays for awhile because he is already a fantastic villain.
The Messengers is getting better each episode but I am still not sure it will even air all its limited episodes so I am a little nervous that it's going to end badly. iZombie may make it into my top new shows list because it constantly entertains me.

ReplyDeleteAs for everything else, I am hopelessly behind. I have over 100 episodes in my Hulu queue (this after several expiring too) and the summer isn't going to give me much time to get caught up!
I tried Merlin ages ago but didn't like it, it was the pilot though, maybe it improves over time. I had a nice TV week overall, pretty slow at the start now though with both Scorpion and The 100 gone.
ReplyDeleteAOS 2x19 - I liked this episode, mainly seeing Ward again and I loved his conversation with Coulson at the end.
TBBT 8x23 - I feel almost exactly the same as you do on this one. I loved the mothers, I probabaly like Beverly more than you do though. I didn't like the story with Howard and the others either.
Grey's Anatomy 11x22 - This is one of my favourite episodes of GA, I really loved it. I found pretty much everything about it perfect. I'm glad it was too after last weeks episode.
TVD 6x20 - I really enjoyed this too, I have to admit though I'm enjoying it a lot more now knowing Elena will be gone and warming up to Steroline being romantic.
OUAT 4x21 - Great episode, wrapped a few things that could have been dragged out and I'm happy for that, it also set up the finale really well!
Secrets and Lies 1x10 - The only bad thing about my TV week, I found the finale pretty boring and disappointing. Shame because I enjoyed the rest of the season so much.
Penny Dreadful 2x01 - It's finally back and I loved it! Those witches are so so creepy and the whole thing is so well done, I can't wait for the rest of the season.
I think Penny Dreadful and Grey's Anatomy tie for Show of the Week this week. I never thought GA would be that good but this week it was :)
It was a nice surprise to see your predictions at the end. I agree with them all, the only one I'm any bit unsure about is Agent Carter but I'm leaning toward cancellation on that one.

ReplyDeleteAgent Carter, Forever, and Galavant are my big loses this year. Last season it was Enlisted as the #1 by far. I still can't believe The 100 was already renewed and I stil owe many thanks to the CW for it.
Merlin was fantastic. I wasn't super impressed by the pilot when I saw that years ago but this episode was great. I look forward to exploring it more. I feel your pain at being behind. I feel like I can never even keep up much less catch up.
ReplyDeleteMerlin - I watched the pilot and then never watched anything else. I always meant to get back to it but the pilot didn't impress me as a must watch situation. This episode was great though, the best I saw this week. I'm not sure if you would like the show or not, but I strongly suggest that if you want to give it another go, try this episode. The CGI is cheesy but the pacing is fantastic.

GA - I am glad you liked this episode. After all the bad press Derek's death episode got, I wasn't sure if fans would go into it already soured on the show.
TVD - I don't watch this show but I am curious about how they are going to take her out. Plus, that eliminates the neverending love triangle.
Secrets & Lies - not reading what you wrote because I am studiously avoiding anything that can spoil the ending for me. I hope to marathon this in 2 weeks.
Eye Candy is also on my loss list but I didn't include cable in this. It was so much better than people expected it to be and I think that's what hurt it in the long run. I would love to be wrong about Agent Carter though. It was one of the best shows of the season for me and my favorite comic based show, just edging out The Flash. That might change when I finally see the rest of Daredevil but I doubt it. You definitely made out better on your win to loss ratio than I did. Congrats!
I'm going to miss Forever most. :( I actually don't have a lot of shows I expect to be cancelled and/or don't care if they get cancelled (For one, I like The Messengers, but won't really miss it).
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping Grimm and Supernatural end on announced final seasons soon. I know Supernatural's already renewed but next year. Clearly the writers aren't getting better on either show keeping annoying characters around and not making good plot choices, imo.
TVD - Forever bitter over the romantic department, even if I'm warming up to Caroline/Stefan but at this point yes, go Elena, leave thank you. Hopefully this means more brother stuff next season? Please?
ReplyDeleteOUAT - Definitely a better episode than the last. This season has been a mix for me. I like some plots, utterly hate others.
I watched Wayward Pines yesterday and I have to say it was a pleasant surprise, I really enjoyed it. Didn't include it in my post though, I will when it airs on FOX but I hope it does well.

ReplyDeleteAOS - I'm not sure about his redemption arc either but I do really like Ward. I was hoping he'd move to the spin-off so the redemption arc wouldn't be an issue.

OUAT- I feel the same about 4B, although I haven't hated any plots but I've found parts a bit boring, especially last weeks episode. Hopefully the finale will deliver :)
I never actually finished Constantine since I knew it was getting the axe.
I think that's what I liked about it. I didn't know what to expect and it was a pleasant surprise to like it. I can't wait to find out what's going on in that town. I haven't read anything on it so I won't be spoiled.

Forever is going to be a hard one to lose for me too. Mostly because Henry and Abe's relationship is the best new character interaction on TV this season for me. I'm going to miss that father-son dynamic, especially since it was so unique.
ReplyDeleteGrimm and SPN make my tossup list exactly for this. They've both nosedived although for me SPN is better than it's been since season seven. I wouldn't mind SPN going 12 seasons just to make it the longest running show to ever be on the CW, beating 7th Heaven. Grimm could go tomorrow and I wouldn't care. I just want a Trubel and Mama Grimm spin-off.
That was actually my least favourite part of the episode lol, still a pretty powerful scene there though, I hope you enjoy the episode :)

ReplyDeleteI've heard great things about Secrets & Lies, so I am excited to see how it ends. The only thing is that it's a show I have to be in the mood for so I'm hoping in 2 weeks, after school is done I will be ready.
Manhattan Love Story was the first cancellation for me. It's not that I even thought it was great but out of all the crummy comedies that debuted in fall, it was decent. Usually I have one overwhelming miss but this year it's a 3-way tie between Agent Carter with the fabulous acting, Forever with the great father-son relationship, and Galavant which made me laugh harder than anything else. Plus I love that they tried a musical show that wasn't about whiny teens.
I never tried Manhatten Love Story but the other 3 are all shows I dropped! Although I wouldn't have dropped Forever it the I didn't think it would be cancelled.

I just can't stop watching a show because of ratings. It may end badly but some scenes are worth seeing between the start and end. Even if the ending hurts.
ReplyDeleteI was never big on Damon either, but I like him when he is getting along with Stefan and there isn't the whole Elena romance getting in the way. His time with Rose and the time he helped Stefan in Season 3 get back control over his bloodlust were his best times.
I usually only drop a show because of ratings if I wasn't that invested in the show in the first place. Like an exception would be The Messengers, I plan on watching all we get of that regardless of ratings. I'm just saving it until it finishes up then I'll binge it.

I keep wondering along with others if they're trying to set up a new generation on younger hunters for a potential spin off? I dont think enough people would be interested in watching any kind of spin off of the show but I'm not sure Producers/Carver/Pedowitz etc are smart enough to figure out that the main draw of the show is the brothers/Jared and Jensen and not the less than stellar writing/storylines. Their best option is still a Castiel spin off but Misha Collins is too old for a lead by CW standards, unless they have him not as the main character and bring in a younger support cast I dont see the CW going with it. Also Jared and Jensen wont get as much time off without Misha on the show, though they could wait untill SPN is done before they try.
ReplyDeleteGrimm seems like a huge possibility for a last season. Not sure it will be announced soon/in advance but I can see it being cancelled next season.
ReplyDeleteSPN may have to wait depending on what happens with TVD, not sure CW wil want to lose them both in the same season even though they now have plenty of shows to take up the mantle of staple shows. I hope season 11 is announced as the last during upfronts but I cant see it happening, it looks like this one will likely go out with a whimper and not a bang if the writing/storylines keep going the way they are.
Supernatural - after seeing peoples reaction on twitter I decided to join those who not watching and pretending that episode does not exist. Besides i dislike Cass and angels and fast forward all his scenes for few seasons already.

Looks like this year i would lose more tv shows than usual (forever, galavant, battle creek, stalker, eye candy....)
You picked a great place to pick up Merlin after the pilot, S3 is where I started after not really getting in to after the first two. I think once you know the characters and are behind their interactions, the rest of the series can be appreciated more, it's one of those shows were the actors, and their chemistry, are the reason the material works at all at times imo.
ReplyDeleteLike you, I'm not really feeling the Major storyline in iZombie, the car break in felt wrong, as did the police believing the cat brains cover story. The whole scene came across as a tad awkward to me. Pretty solid episode otherwise however, enjoyed the fun, 'platonic', date and the shoot out & treehouse rescue at the end. I'm assuming her brother is going to get a job at Blaine's shop? Just hope we're not heading for some tragedy here, although him finding how Liv is a zombie could be interesting.
I can see why they've now kept the secret of Barry's identity from Iris, so that she could work it out herself. I have to say that it didn't work for me, but the two young lads who I watch the show with thought it was one of the best parts of the episode, especially the younger one. Cisco was man of the episode for again though, Carlos Valdes has been playing a blinder these last few weeks, really enjoying his performances.
It's been such a great first season overall though, I'm excited to see how it will all be wrapped up/left on a cliffhanger, but have to admit that this is the show I am dreading going on hiatus the most this year. It will be a long wait for season 2, and I just pray that it will be as good as this one has been!
I'm loving Orphan Black this season so far, the boy clones have been a great addition.

ReplyDeleteBad. I have been behind on 3-4 shows since February and just now am I slowly starting to catch up. I watched a couple of Scorpion episodes last week, though I didn't finish the season yet. The past two days I have managed to catch up on the latest 10 episodes of The Blacklist. I must say it was pretty great and the were some pretty strong installments. However, I understand why you have it on your marathon list because there are mysteries that slowly start to unravel. Maybe The Blacklist is just a show that's better in marathon mode. Anyway, I'm caught up now so now I only have The Flash, NCIS: LA, CSI: Cyber and Battle Creek to catch up on.
To get back to your article, the only show I watched from the list above was Stalker. But it was an excellent episode and I agree that it's great Beth isn't the damsel in distress. Maggie Q did an amazing job in this episode and the fight scenes were awesome. Stalker will be the biggest loss for me this season, which was lucky enough to get a full season order (just like The Tomorrow People was last year). I will also lose Battle Creek, American Odyssey and maybe CSI: Cyber, but I won't miss them too much I think.
Originally I wanted to have a hunter spin-off but to use kids who learned about the supernatural during the Winchesters' early cases. I would love to see Michael from Something Wicked fighting evil. Same with Lucas from Dead in the Water and before she was killed, Sarah from Provenance. The problem with useing kids like Krissy and Claire is that they are beyond annoying in themselves. Who would ever want to watch that? I'm not opposed to a spin-off which has little to do with the brothers, but I do need characters that I care about or at least can put up with. Supernatural writers don't seem capable of that anymore.
ReplyDeleteI have been advocating for Misha Collins to get his own show for a long time. Still I don't think it would work as a spin-off from SPN. Not so much because of his age, but because of the waning interest in SPN and the fact that the angels are a divisive point int eh fandom. If they had done it around season 5, then sure.
I am a big fan of closure too, but Grimm might be too far down the rabbit hole at this point. Time to wrap things up and move on.
ReplyDeleteGrimm is definitely on its last legs but its future may depend more on how NBC does overall next year. I don't see season 11 being SPN's last either; I think ti will go until contract negotiations again.

ReplyDeleteGrimm - They do seem to be trying to kill off their viewership. Sadly, it's the most effective thing the writers are doing these days.
I am sad that most of the new shows that I really liked did not catch on in the ratings. Instead shows that I hated are being renewed. I guess that's par for the course these days.
Merlin - I am really happy that whoever nominated Merlin chose this episode. It was right in my wheelhouse with teh constant action, fast pace, and snarky bromance between the two main characters. I can't think of a more perfect place to begin for me.
ReplyDeleteiZombie - For me it's a shame that they are saddling Major with such a nonsensical plot because I really like the character. They seem to have taking the quickest road to tie him into the mythology when he didn't really need to be at this point. Having him be Ravi's roommate could have tied him to the story enough and then they could have slowly made him more central. Unless they are going to make Major a zombie too, I don't really get this plan. If they are going to make Major a zombie, that is a huge misstep at this juncture.
Flash - I'm glad someone enjoyed Iris in this episode. I too like that she figured it out on her own if for no other reason than it makes her seem less stupid. The fact that she didn't recognize her best friend just because he was wearing a mask is a superhero trope that drives me bonkers on a good day. I am also relieved that she finally knows. Not looking forward to the emoangsting that will come from her realizing that Eddie knew and didn't tell her though. My biggest problem with Iris though is that she serves zero purpose in the story. All she does is drag things down. Maybe that will change now that she knows but I doubt it. We're in for angsty monolgues about trust and secrets from a character that I would just as soon pack off to Starling City than to listen to.
Cisco is a true blessing to Flash. He brings the humor and the heart. Most times either Joe or he is my MVP. What I like most is that Cisco could have easily been the Diggle character from Arrow, the guy they have no idea what to do with. While Diggle's sole purpose in season 2 of Arrow was to fold his arms and stand around in the Arrow Cave, Cisco is a vital part of the team. He routinely creates the weapons and other things that save the day and he does it with a smile and a joke. I loved Diggle on Arrow but they completely wasted his character. I'm so glad that they learned from that mistake with Cisco.
I am a little nervous about The Flash as well. Call it Sleepy Hollow Syndrome. The Flash will come in as my most anticipated genre show next time and it is riding a creative high right now. Here's hoping it avoids the sophomore slump and returns as much fun as ever.
I think we are all in the same boat. There is just too much quality, entertaining TV on these days to be able to watch it all. I constantly feel like good shows are slipping through the cracks. I thought Scorpion had some strong episodes towards the end, although I am not a fan of the focus on Walter and Paige. It remains one of my favorite new shows of the season. The Flash has been stellar lately so let me know what you think when you get caught up on it. NCIS:LA, Cyber, and Battle Creek have all been getting better too.
ReplyDeleteLast year I liked The Blacklsit a lot but I was often frustrated by how slow they were to reveal key plot points. By the time they got around to it, I had already grown weary of those subplots. Therefore I dropped it midseason and then picked it back up in marathon later. I found that I could tolerate the glacial pace when it came to key secrets much better this way and it made me enjoy the show so much more. The Blacklist is probably the best current example I have of a show that is better in marathon. I look forward to watching the second half of this season over the summer.
Stalker got a bad rap right from the begining, which i a total shame. Many of the valid criticisms after the pilot became toned down or obsolete as the season continued. Maggie Q as Beth is a large part of why the show was worth sticking with. Her character is complex and strong without being overly obnoxious. That's hard to find these days. I thought this episode portrayed her the best. Not only did she kick butt but she was also vulnerable, smart, and able to ask for help. I like that in a hero.
Then there's those of us who have fallen off the wagon entirely and haven't been able to keep up with our core group of shows... I haven't finished this week's TGW review yet, and I didn't write one for the show since I moved early last month. So So So very far behind. :|

ReplyDeleteI'm afraid that I never got passed the first half of the first season of Arrow, but only because life was so hectic at the time - I moved house and mum had a bad fall which meant her going into hospital for 6 months. I keep meaning to go back and pick it up, but have never quite found the time yet... lol.
I want to like Iris, she's so important to the overall history of the franchise and I don't have a problem with the actress or her performance at all. It's just the writing for her has been so abysmal imo. The jealous streak in her when Barry had a girlfriend did her no favours at all, for example, and I'm never a fan of the female lead who is in love with the superhero rather than the boy next door alter-ego...until she finds out the secret that is. They have at least attempted the latter hurdle in the 'day that never was' before the tsunami I guess, but meh :p
I've thought there are already too many zombies since we found out Suzuki is one. Granted it was smart of Blaine to turn the head of police, but it's starting to get a little farfetched for me.
ReplyDeleteAs for Arrow, you should at least see the season 1 finale. It's one of the best episodes I've seen. Everything else is downhill even though season 2 started well. Then it became the Maury Povitch show and I was done.
I'm not sure if I like the actress who plays Iris, simply because I haven't seen her in anything else. For me it appears to be a combination of very crummy writing for the character and the actress not bringing anything that interests me either. I lean more towards writing though. Since her only purpose seems to be to hold down one leg of a love triangle and to whine about things, I would rather she go. I'm never a fan of people who can't make up their mind about whom they want to be with.
Sorry. This TV season seems to be kicking everyone's butt. Moving certainly doesn't help. Here's hoping you can at least get caught up on TGW for reviews.

ReplyDeleteI'm liking Cyber more than I ever thought I would, considering I wasn't a fan of the original. It's not the best TV but it's good for relaxing and just vegging out.
The way CBS has treated Stalker, basically pulling it midseason, gives me no hope for it continuing. However I firmly believe that if some critics had seen the third episode or beyond, they would not have trashed it as much as they did with the pilot.
