It took some extra negotiating between ABC and 20th Century Fox TV, but I hear a deal has been sealed for a fifth season of Last Man Standing. The multi-camera sitcom starring Tim Allen has done a solid job opening Friday night for ABC. Led by Shark Tank, with contributions from Last Man Standing and 20/20, ABC has become the dominant network on Fridays among adults 18-49. Joining Last Man Standing on the night next season may be ABC’s newly picked up multi-camera comedy Dr. Ken, created by and starring Ken Joeng.
In anticipation of a fifth season renewal of Last Man Standing, 20th TV recently signed a deal with series’ co-executive producer Matt Berry to become executive producer/showrunner for Season 5. He will succeed Tim Doyle, who is moving on after three years at the helm. A fifth season will likely help 20th TV to land an off-network syndication deal for the sitcom.

I don't watch the show but I always root for it for some reason because I think it is very much under-appreciated. And it does way too well an under-promoted Fridays at 8 sitcom to need to sweat out renewals every year. Good for it being renewed.

ReplyDeleteI catch at least a couple episodes (or rather, am in the room when it's on TV) and I've always kinda hated it. Yet it's always nice to have someone other than CBS and Grimm on NBC to get Friday stability so yay for that I guess.

I would have moved The Goldbergs to Tuesday due to compatibility and strength, but not after seeing what happened last season. ABC Studios needs to hurry up and get some of their comedies to syndication, so I think Real O'Neals on Wednesday is a given as well. The wild card here is The Muppets—we don't know how much ABC likes the show, so I think it could be a dark horse for the fall schedule. Personally I think they should use it for spackle. Should be interesting having one more scripted comedy on the slate than this season.
It still bothers me though with ABC's #2 comedy leading an hour, but #4 (I think?) is moving away from MF and on a different night. Hard for me to tell what they should do, but hopefully it's nothing like NBC.
For sure! Coming from an Asian culture, its good that ABC has put Asian type shows on TV especially with FOTB. Dr. Ken is one I'm looking forward to.

ReplyDeleteYou should watch it sometime, it's really quite funny. Be forewarned though, the main character is ultra conservative...but the rest of the family is not. The writers ride the edge of offensive but since there are middle of the road and ultra liberal characters it's not as bad.
ReplyDeleteFOX tends to release their schedule + promo's at the same time as the upfronts. So roughly 18 hours to go.

ReplyDeleteI do not think Blackish is as weak as you give it credit for. I know you hate the idea of The Real O'Neals but it might not be such a bad fit with MF. And it is a family comedy after all, at least they haven't reversed to that. Honestly, I am kind of partial to the real o'neals already just because its pickup prevented chevy from being picked up, which I was dreading. During the last friday hours I was strongly rooting for it as the last hope standing between chevy and post MF slot!

ReplyDeleteI'm glad Chevy wasn't picked up too, as you know. I think if Knoxville was picked up then The Goldbergs would be a lock for 8. Honestly I would have rather seen it or The Brainy Bunch on the schedule, O'Neals wasn't even on my radar lol. It actually reminds me slightly of the premise of The Middle's original pilot, where the oldest son had lost his friend in a car accident and was depressed.

ReplyDeleteThe Rea O'Neals wasn't also on my radar, but it became highly there when I realized I needed it to stop Chevy! I am probably willing to check it out though because of Martha Plimpton. I was not a regular watcher of Raising Hope but the few episodes I watched I really liked her there. And I have had that show on marathon duty for ages, though I will probably never get around to do it lol.
I've watched the pilot a long time ago and I didn't dislike it. We'll see. I'll be adding comedies to my rotation during summer since I actually ended up this season caught up on all my comedies and I don't have comedies coming out during summer, so maybe I get there. I will watch Black-ish first, then we'll see.
ReplyDeleteSorry for the misunderstaning, I meant the pilot that was originally under development. They had one going with Ricki Lake leading instead of Patricia Heaton in 2006 or 2007, but the Writers Strike kind of put a halt to it. They redeveloped it with all-new cast members, except for the kid who plays youngest child Brick, and gave the characters of the other kids makeovers.
ReplyDeleteThe Goldbergs and Trophy Wife, meanwhile, aired pilots that had nothing t do with the series. Pilots can be rough, rarely is the pilot one of my favorite episodes. That's why usually I check out a pilot and if I don't like it, listen to what you guys have to say as far as how it's developing.

ReplyDeleteYes, I've watched both the pilots of The Goldbergs and Trophy Wife. The Goldbergs I found quite boring and not engaging at all - I didn't care for the characters at the end of it and I didn't laugh in between, although I thought the mom had potential. As for Trophy Wife, I actually enjoyed the pilot a bit. It didn't blow me out of the water, but I enjoyed it enough and I would have watched the show if the ratings weren't DOA right away.

ReplyDeleteI tried TW when it got the back 9 and everyone went crazy. Wanted to know what was up with all the love for such a low-rated show.
ReplyDeleteRough beginnings though. They recast the daughter after the pilot but didn't actually change the character's personality until later. Both shows are/were a million times better than their pilots.
I will probably try TG this summer again at some point since I will need new comedy blood to get me through the summer. I will go with Blacklist first though. I know you don't like it but I enjoyed the pilot. I will also be watching Unbreakable Kimmi Schmidt from Netflix. After that, maybe The Goldbergs gets a chance.
ReplyDeleteNot my fave show but if I'm home on a Friday night I will turn it on as well as shark tank. To me they are Good Friday shows because you don't have to watch religiously and still get entertainment. Glad for last man standing.
ReplyDeleteEven though there are a few comedies I like better than The Goldbergs, Adam Goldberg really is the best. Lots of interaction on Twitter and the AV Club reviews. Makes everything personal, he talks about behind-the-scenes stuff and everything.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE blackish, it is hilarious! I will say that it took me a little while getting used to laughing at some of the jokes but once I did, it became must see TV.

ReplyDeleteLMS has 86 episodes currently which is enough to sell into syndication. Any extra's are a bonus and will improve the package.
ReplyDeleteCristela only had 22 episodes and would have had to be dragged for another 3 years to have enough for syndication.
