This week in Grimm You Don't Know Jack: a string of homicides have the press asking Captain Renard if a Jack the Ripper copycat has arrived in Portland. While dealing with the investigation, Nick, Hank, Monroe and Wu deal with a situation they never expected. Meanwhile, Adalind and Rosalee must work together on a last ditch attempt to fix Juliette's condition. Elsewhere, Juliette decides to help her new ally even if it means hurting those around her.
Yes, the trailer is gone. Everyone remember the first time they stepped into there and it's very touching. Nick, Hank, Monroe and Wu can't believe Juliette burned the trailer down. No more books, no more weapons. And that wasn't Juliette who did this, but the Hexenbeist inside her. Anyway, Juliette or not, she does have a plan: contact Kelly Burkhart and get her into a trap, as Prince Kenneth ordered.
Adalind is doing everything she can to make amends but Rosalee still can't trust her properly. Next problem is keeping Adalind's safe and the only place Nick and the others can take her is Bud's house, who's surprised to realize the whole situation with Nick, Adalind and Juliette - yeah, Bud, we feel you, we had the same expression.
Also, the team need to exhume Adalind's mother body and that scene with the coffin was pretty hilarious and one of the funniest in the episode. Basically Adalind tells her mother what happened to her in the past season; the missing daughter she had with Sean, the other one she's expecting from Nick, and how much she wants her to be alive because she needs her help, so "Thank you mom for being dead when I needed you". In the background, Monroe, Rosalee and Renard had done a big effort trying not to laugh. Despite the whole situation, Adalind hasn't lost her sense of humour. Another scene I loved was watching a braveheart Rosalee who manages to cut and open Adalind's mother body. Monroe and Adalind are pretty disguested since Monroe said "I'm vegan". I didn't know that, did you?
Once the potion is done, what they have to do is make Juliette drink it. Adalind decides to drink it first, since she's a Hexenbeist. If the potion will work on her, then it's going to have the same effect on Juliette. I guess drinking that is really disgusting, also because Adalind feels: "Like I've just drunk my mom". Anyway, the potion worked. Adalind tries to woge, but her wogen side is gone for good. Now they need Juliette, who is meanwhile plotting with Prince Kenneth and his evil team to break into Nick's house probably. As Nick helps Adalind to take some rest, she still wonders what will happen with their baby. Nick reassures her saying, "No one's gonna take him from me this time."
The Wesen of the Week involves a Jack the Ripper copycat who kills prostitutes in Portland. So instead of killing women because they were prostitute, the copycat choses to murder women because they are Wesens. When Nick, Hank and Monroe investigate and read some books that apparently didn't burn at all, they discover that the copycat wasn't a Wesen but someone was commanding him to do so. Or did Jack the Ripper survive nowdays?
Meanwhile, this bleeding thing with Sean Renard is getting really annoyed. It was about time he finally decides to talk with someone like Henrietta. "I think something is wrong with me", well you keep bleeding, obviously you're not ok. When Renard leaves, Henrietta gets killed byt the copycat. What?!
In the last scene, when Juliette arrives at the Spice Shop, it comes clean she's totally lost her control and doesn't want any help. She likes what she is now. And she's incredibly dangerous. Her power makes everyone do whatever she wants as she smashes Rosalee - who was trying to give her the potion - into the shelves, and control Nick and his loaded gun pointed to Monroe. Then, a gunshot is hearded, but we don't know what happens next because the scene goes black. I just wonder why neither Monroe or Hank did something in that moment. They were frightened by Juliette?
What's coming next? Is Juliette going to become the next enemy in Grimm? Are Adalind and Nick raising their child together? Also, Trubel, Kelly and Diana are coming back. Not to mention the murder case still hasn't been solved.

is this Grimm anymore? what they're doing to Juliette, are they REALLY having them switch roles? Adalind and Nick?
ReplyDeleteI cannot tolerate this saint version of Adiland after all the crap she has pulled over the years. All is now forgiven and swept under the rug-Why?Coz she's carrying Nick's magical baby?Just NO.I actually liked the evil/Semi-evil version of Adliand.Juliette was useless in the 1st season, however with time she became semi interesting as a character. This is Katrina of Sleepy Hollow all over again. The
ReplyDeletewriters are taking the easiest route-Pick the character which is universally despised by majority of fandom and set her up as a villain all of a sudden coz they have no clue what to do with the character
anymore!
First they have to be clear if they want to make it a procedural or a serialized show.Clear out the mess you've created,go with the MOTW SL for a while and then pick up the main arc from there.
Minor correction: It's "exhume", not "resume".
ReplyDeleteThis has been quite a thrilling episode, and I wasn't surprised that Juliette turned down the offer.
Meanwhile, I was kinda hoping Henrietta could stuck around but too bad it wasn't meant to be. At first, I thought the Captain could be Jack the Ripper but it seems too obvious as the writers are putting in coincidental incidences into Sean's scene that would easily connect him to the murders. We've already seen how he's exactly been doing in his blackouts, going randomly violent on anyone he finds, whereas "Jack" is picking and choosing his victims.
Those two contrasting patterns alone would clear Sean off without a doubt.
Adalind actually has a long way to go to be completely forgiven by everyone so her redemption as a character has to be earned. Her actions in this episode is a good first step towards that.
ReplyDeleteThe EP's have made it clear last fall that the key storyline will come back into play the following season. I think we're already about to get back to it since the current stories is leading us back to the Royals have been pretty much in the backburner scheming and plotting while they've yet to yield actual results in getting Diana and add more keys to their collection.
I'm sorry but I gotta ask: Where are you seeing a saint in anything that Adalind is doing or has done recently? Your comments and those of some others are expressing frustration at the direction of the story. Fair enough. But again what is it that you're seeing that makes you believe that Adalind is being treated like a saint? She hasn't done anything good or selfless or heroic. Also, why is it that you think that everything she has done has been forgiven or forgotten and "swept under the rug"? The people around her have and continue to act in a sense of amazement while throwing scorn in her direction. How is any of that "forgiveness"? I think you should continue to watch how this all plays out and stop overreacting prematurely.
ReplyDeleteThis is my last season so maybe when they get back to the Key & Map SL along with Royal SL in a more prominent way,i'll tune in.It's pretty clear where they're going with Adiland next season,it doesn't require rocket science to understand this show's SLs.In other words,no,i don't have that much hope in the writers as you do.I always watched this show as a fun time pass show, nothing more but this baby melodrama has destroyed that fun part.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I don't think they're setting Adalind up as a saint. Everything she's done so far has been in her own best interest. The show has also made a point of having her do something at least mildly awful in each episode: (last episode, when she physically forced Nick to touch her stomach. This episode, telling Bud that Nick was the father, making him look like a cheater instead of explaining the non-consensual aspect.)
ReplyDeleteIt honestly seems to me that they're setting her up for a bigger backstab rather than a redemption arc.
In spite of a few peoples' misgivings, of which I think many are overblown and hyperbolic, this episode and the last few have been the most entertaining the show has been in a while.
ReplyDelete"You Don't Know Jack" accomplishes a handful of things that I've been wanting Grimm to get done for a while now. Mainly, Grimm has finally found a way to get all their characters involved without using any boring tacked-on subplots.
While the direction of Sean Renard's personal issue has been apparent to me for a few episodes, it's still nice to see him out from behind a desk with a subplot of his own. As an added bonus, we get to see a more vulnerable side of the almost always stoic Sean Renard so good for Grimm for giving the character something different.
Bud was in this and Bud appearances are an automatic win. Not to be overlooked, the "pie" section of the conversation at Bud's house was priceless.
Juliette. She's one of two divisive characters on this show but she has never before been this interesting, useful, or entertaining. She makes a damn good villain and this storyline makes me wish they went dark with her sooner. She was great in You Don't Know Jack's final scene.
Adalind. The other divisive character. Adalind has been drifting around the periphery of the show since season two going from one dull pointless subplot to the next. It has been a long and disheartening misuse of a good snarky character. Finally, Grimm has seen fit to reintegrate her into the show and while some object to the way it has been done, I do not. In YDKJ, Adalind gets to be funny, catty, sarcastic, vulnerable, and of course self-pitying (It's Adalind after all) and since they've finally brought her back into the fold, I can actually bring myself to care about it which I normally wouldn't. That gets another thumbs up for this episode and for Grimm.
That brings me to Nick. He was a bit disappointing in this episode. He was a little too doting on Adalind. I'd like to see a bit more emotional conflict from him. He was also way too naive when it came to Juliette, and smashing his phone right after leaving a message for Juliette telling her to call him was possibly the dumbest thing I've ever seen on Grimm.
A few lingering random thoughts about the episode:
- The new Royal continues to do a great job.
- The two women were way too clean, good-looking, and healthy to be street corner hookers. What is it with TV shows and model-caliber hookers?
- Was anyone really fooled by the accent Sasha Roiz was doing?
- Henrietta's death was too abrupt and anti-climactic for my liking.
- Wu's comment about Wesen prostitutes was a little off-putting seeing as how he was standing right next to a murder victim.
- Hank unhesitatingly offering to stand guard at Bud's house was very kind and selfless of him considering his own history with Adalind. Hank is a good guy.
I wish Henrietta would have lasted longer too. I was looking forward to getting to know that character better.
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree about the episode, every single character was involved. It was awhile since i've enjoyed an episode of grimm this much.
ReplyDeleteNice summary. I like the way the plot is coming together too. Henrietta was an interesting character, so I was really disappointed that they killed her off and it really did seem sudden and out of the blue.At first I thought she was killed off so that the Grimm team would conveniently have access to another dead Hexenbiest to remake their potion, but Adalind stated that the Hexenbiest had to be dead for a while, so her death really seemed pointless.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I think "doting" is the right word. I'd have liked to see him a bit less nice/concerned, but I think he's compartmentalizing heavily (like we've seen him do in the past when personal things come up.) Right now, he's focusing on Adalind as "fainting pregnant woman" over everything else. I don't think the rest is forgotten though. The phone throwing was pretty stupid though. :-)
ReplyDeleteHonestly, at this point Renard's role in the Jack the Ripper storyline seems so obvious, that I'm thinking it's a red herring. Some other clues don't seem to match properly. (I can't explain them obviously using Sasha Roiz's voice though.)
Yeah, you're right. Maybe doting was too strong of a word. I think a better way for me to put it would be to say that I wish Nick had seemed more "begrudgingly attentive" toward Adalind. That would have been a more fitting attitude.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. But the dude probably needs some kind of therapy at this point.
ReplyDeleteThat's for sure. I doubt he's emotionally healthy at this point and I'm sure the worst is yet to come so finding himself a shrink would be a good idea.
ReplyDeleteI think they killed Henrietta to leave room for making the potion to suppress the hexenbiest in Juliette sometime later in season five, when he least expect it.
ReplyDeletethanks for your review. You reminded me that there were moments in the episode that I truly enjoyed. I the last few minutes of the episode I had a couple of moments that kicked me out of the story and I forgot how awesome Bud's scene was. (as I typed this I had this flash of a thought of Adalind going into labor unexpectedly and Bud delivering the baby.) I liked the set up of the COTW plot. Loved the scene with Adalind and her mother's coffin and Bud receiving Adalind as a houseguest. (wonder if his wife knows)
ReplyDeleteKept nodding as I read your comments....especially your comments about the integration of all of the characters into the story and making Adalind relevant again.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Renard's has been evident to you? No snark intended. I've been getting just questions and no clues.
I've also been enjoying evil Juliette. My perfect world is for her to keep her power, her new snark but go back to being a good guy. I'm only hoping she's not really Kenneth's puppet. She's smarter than that. Plus Kenneth is too arrogant. I have always gotten huge amounts of pleasure in watching arrogant characters getting knocked down a peg.
which what I was expecting given how he reacted to feeling the baby kick.
ReplyDeleteHe could call Cami from The Originals. :-) {was binging to catch up and realized that these 1000 year old vampires have embraced the 21st century in having a therapist on retainer.}
ReplyDeleteAbout Renard. Grimm has been slow-playing his condition for many episodes now and have purposely given no answers. I'm one of those people who read press releases on the site so I knew this mystery Jack the Ripper storyline was coming up. I put two and two together and figured that if there were still no answers about Renard by the time the JtR plot came around that Renard's storyline and Ripper plot were one and the same. When they had Renard losing time a couple of episodes ago, that was confirmation enough for me.
ReplyDeleteAs far as Juliette goes, I don't think her being used by Kenneth is due to a lack of smarts but rather her being blinded by her obsession with revenge. And yeah, Kenneth is a smug, arrogant ass. Those are the best kind of villains. The more you hate them the more satisfying it is when they are eventually taken down. There's nothing worse than a dull villain. Personally, I hope Trubel lops his head off with her machete but he may stick around for a while.
Cami also babysits so you're killing two birds with one stone.
ReplyDeleteGuffaw!
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping that Juliette is going along with Kenneth because their goals align and the minute they don't he'll discover that he never had the control over her he thought he had.
ReplyDeleteThat would be nice to see or at least have Juliette double-cross Kenneth before he double-crosses her.
ReplyDeleteA wealth of information was lost for both Wesen and Grimm when Henrietta was killed. Then again, it seemed like Henrietta only gave the basic of information when she was called upon. It seemed like she always had a secret agenda and couldn't really be trusted.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure after the appropriate amount of time, the gang will dig Henrietta back up to make more surpression potion for Juliette. Only next time Juliette won't be asked to take the potion.
the Dumbest thing this epi was the end when we heard the gunshot...then 2 seconds later we see the preview to next week...and we see Monroe standing behind Trubel, lol...☺...
ReplyDeleteI would love it if Juliette were able to keep (some) of her powers yet be one of the good guys. In other words, a Grimm. That way Juliette would be redeemed while evolving this character to make her a more interesting and integral part of the show. Makes you wonder what made a Grimm in the first place. Maybe they were once Wesens that were cured. The first generation of Grimms went on to have children which allowed their legacy to continue. As the years passed, the true Grimm origin was lost. That's my fan fiction anyway. :)
ReplyDeleteAs long as Juliette doesn't do irreparable damage like killing someone and is cured so she can be with Nick ... then I'm happy. I'm really happy if the baby Adalind is carrying turns out to be Nick and Juliette's. After all the good guys have sacrificed to do the right thing, they deserve to find some happiness. Nick, Juliette, Monroe, Rosalee, Hank, Wu, Kelly, Trubel, and (maybe) Renard deserve their happy ending before this series ends.
I knew Monroe was vegan since season 1. That was hs explanation to Nick about why he wasn't like the Others of his kind (anymore). That and pilates.
ReplyDeleteNot sure I'd go that far, but I have to say I love Juliette as a badass enemy and Adalind as the relatable ally. When Adalind is laying badass-enemy, she's predictable. We all know she's a professional strife stirrer. Juliette as a relatable ally is the caring girlfriend she's Always been. Seeing a softer side to Adalind and a meaner side in Juliette is making them both unpredictable...and the show a lot more interesting
ReplyDeleteI have the uneasy feeling that they're planning to tie up all the lose ends with a sweeping season ending two parter. The problem is that the juice likely won't be worth the squeeze. That's particularly likely if they have a fairytale ending with Nick, Juliette and HexenNick becoming one big family. They're also seemingly bend on comnfusing the situation even more by throwing Trubel back into the mix. With Kelly returning, that can only represent some pointless pandering to those few fans who still believe the Trubel arc wasn't responsible for dragging down the program's first half ratings. Apparently the writers have also forgotten that the show is named Grimm not Grimms. Too many Grimms will spoil what's left if this show's entertainment value.
ReplyDeleteI agree . I never really like Trubel. However there seem to be a new Grimm around so I guess they need her.
ReplyDeleteI think the Captain is the one killing all the Wesen. I'm afraid that who ever it is that is killing all the wesen will kill Roselee, or Adaline.
ReplyDeleteWho is HexenNick?
ReplyDeleteoh thanks, I didn't remember that!
ReplyDeleteI hope not!
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading :) yes, about Henrietta I didn't see it coming.
ReplyDeleteWhy everyone is blaming Nick? I think he's doing a HUGE effort trying to balance himself between Juliette (who he still loves) and Adalind (the mother of his son).
ReplyDeleteI'm not blaming Nick for any specific wrongdoing (except for the phone incident). It's a tough situation and no one can be expected to handle everything perfectly. I'm just a little critical because I think he's capable of better choices.
ReplyDelete
