Gotham - All Happy Families Are Alike - Advance Preview
May 4, 2015
Gotham PC ReviewsWith the Ogre out of the way, “Gotham” closes its freshman season with “All Happy Families Are Alike,” which rightfully returns focus to the mob conflict that’s been bubbling since the premiere. It’s an entertaining enough episode, but not nearly as grand as it could have been.
Two weeks have passed since the Penguin pushed Falcone and Maroni into all-out war and the GCPD is struggling to stem the tide (although not so much that Montoya or poor Crispus Allen manage to make it on-screen). Oswald is confidently waiting in the wings, ready to swoop in for the crown once his enemies eliminate each other. There’s also a wild card in the water in Fish Mooney, who sweeps back into town like her subplot on the island of Dr. Dulmacher never happened (if only). And mixed in with all these villains is our hero James Gordon, who worries about what will happen to his city if the wrong victor emerges.
There’s some fun moments scattered throughout, like Fish ranking her various enemies on a scale of how slow and painful their deaths will be and a surprise appearance by Selina during the proceedings. Sadly though, the story too often fizzles when it should sizzle, low on action and high on people standing around talking. But when the dust settles, the show’s mob scene has been thoroughly shaken for next season. Characters die, characters flee, and a new head of the Gotham criminal underworld stands tall.
In subplot news, her ordeal with the Ogre has led Barbara to latch on to Leslie, first as her doctor (why the medical examiner is seeing living patients, I have no idea) and then as her trauma counselor. These contrivances to put his former and current girlfriends together leads to a lame twist that changes the outlook of Gordon’s love life. Also, a tense conversation with a suspicious Kristen Kringle pushes Edward Nygma closer still to his Riddler persona.
Finally, Bruce is still obsessing about his conversations last week with Sid Bunderslaw and Lucius Fox and what secrets his father could have been concealing about the corruption at Wayne Enterprises. Amusingly, given the amount of time the characters spent on that set this season, Bruce and Alfred tear apart the Wayne Manor library searching for answers. And in the scene that will keep Batfans smiling all summer, Bruce does make a discovery, one that will open up a whole new world for him.
The first season finale of “Gotham” airs this Monday on FOX. So for the final time until fall, share your pre-episode thoughts and speculations in the comments section.

why the hell is Selina with that BORING character Mooney?!
ReplyDeleteI knew it would be pretty entertaining, but of course it's disappointing. Gotham has had an average season. At least the last couple of episodes have been pretty good.
ReplyDeleteU wrote an intriguing piece. Just enough tidbits to draw me in and push me back.
ReplyDeleteI have just 1 question, will the Wayne family murder be revealed? I mean who plotted it? The executioner is probably some random person.
Great preview. Sums up how I felt when I watched it. Not truly as grand as it could've been.
ReplyDeleteThe best part is the final scene for sure. The forced Barbara inclusion was back this week and it was really lame.
Oh well. Until season two.
It's so random how it happens!!!
ReplyDeleteDid we get any Bruce and Selina scenes? I always enjoy their scenes together.
ReplyDeleteNo. There will not be any. Selina gets scene almost all other central characters though
ReplyDeletelet me guess in gotham the bat cave was started for some reason by thomas wayne.
ReplyDeleteI just hope leslie doesn't become barbara's new lesbian flame lol
Montoya and allen will probally not be In season 2.we haven't seen Montoya since she ended it with barbara.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure about that. They still made the effort to keep them in the opening credits. Which means they payed them all this time. I'm sure both actors don't make bif money but still.
ReplyDeleteHas to be better than the past 3 eps with the Ogre which left me wanting to give up the will to live. I just hoped the show would have overcome its teething problems already...
ReplyDeleteAt this point the character has been an anti-hero for a while.
ReplyDeleteWell if they're going comics it's probably Joe Chill.
ReplyDeleteoh, given Selina's story and the type of person I thought they would go a different way. Not that it would make much sense mind you, but I thought they would go there since her mother was not brought up again.
ReplyDeleteHmmm didn't know about him. But I at least would like for it to be mention, insinuated and clarified, especially if no one "big" was part of it. They just left that hanging in the air.
ReplyDeleteYes she has. But she starts as a villain. One of the bad guys.
ReplyDeleteAs a thief who hates killing. Not much of a villain.
ReplyDeleteNot much, but one nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteIt's gonna be a long wait until season two then.... No mention of that point at all.
ReplyDeletei think the Discovery Bruce made was when he opened the Fireplace and the Found the future BatCave, lol ...☺...
ReplyDeleteoh they ended it? i never knew that LOL
ReplyDeleteaw damn it!!! and even Gordon?
ReplyDeleteWhy the hell does this series exist?
ReplyDeleteI very much doubt this version will be one. She hasn't even been one in the comics since probably the 70s. It seems like she'll just be a thieving anti-hero. Like she has been for a long time.
ReplyDeleteyou really think so?
ReplyDeleteis the Bruce reveal amazing? and have you warmed up to David Mazouz?
ReplyDeleteTerrible decision by the writers. Really terrible to not conclude this story, which btw was the moving the story for the first 10 episodes.
ReplyDeleteYeah judging by modern versions of her and this show's presentation.
ReplyDeleteWhen the secret passage is found behind the fireplace: Bruce and Alfred will discover that Thomas Wayne was involved with the Court of Owls.
ReplyDeleteBut don't forget, the "Gotham" Selina already rather remorselessly killed someone.
ReplyDeleteI do think the show views her as a more gray character, but like others (such as Edward Nygma), the capacity for violence has been ramped up.
I kept waiting for Selina's mother to come up in relation to Carmine Falcone (who, in some continuities, is her father), but I guess the show isn't going that way.
ReplyDeleteThat's what's so weird. They clearly lost all interest in Montoya and Allen, but instead of letting the actors go (which is common in a show's first year), they kept them on contract and in the credits.
ReplyDeleteI think the show overall needs to focus more on the cops. Even Bullock is being shortchanged.
Yeah, Montoya rather randomly dumped Barbara and that was the last time we saw her.
ReplyDeleteBut didn't that Lovecraft guy hint to Gordon that the Wayne murders were part of something bigger?
ReplyDeleteYeah, once Selina claimed she didn't see the guy after all, everyone kinda forgot about it.
ReplyDeleteThanks everybody for reading and for all the great comments!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I was just expressing that I wish they weren't.
ReplyDeleteI think she's putting on a facade in regards to killing Reggy. But if she isn't Selina didn't enjoy it, and only did it as a last resort to protect herself and Bruce. She's not like Nygma or Cobblepot in that sense.
