New York – Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs, Fox Television Group, today unveiled the FOX primetime slate for the 2015-2016 television season to the national advertising community during its annual Programming Presentation at the Beacon Theatre.


“Building on the phenomenal momentum created by GOTHAM, THE LAST MAN ON EARTH and, of course, EMPIRE, we’re infusing next season’s schedule with new ambitious dramas, smart comedies, aspirational unscripted series and big live events and specials – all from the best creators in the business,” said Walden and Newman. “And our strategy with these bold creative swings is simple: schedule them strategically, market them relentlessly and create events that break through and captivate viewers across every platform.”

Tuesdays are all-new this fall on FOX, with new comedies GRANDFATHERED and THE GRINDER, followed by killer comedy-horror series SCREAM QUEENS.

The new comedies kicking off an all-new Tuesday are GRANDFATHERED and THE GRINDER. A comedy about coming of age – at any age – GRANDFATHERED stars John Stamos (“Full House,” “ER”) as the ultimate bachelor whose life is turned upside down when he discovers he’s not only a father, but a grandfather. THE GRINDER, starring Emmy Award nominee Rob Lowe (“Parks and Recreation,” “The West Wing”) and Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award nominee Fred Savage (“The Wonder Years”), follows a famous TV lawyer (Lowe) who, after his hit series, “The Grinder,” is canceled, moves back home and joins his brother (Savage) at their family’s real-life law firm – despite having no formal education, no bar certification, no license to practice and no experience in an actual courtroom.

Award-winning executive producers Ryan Murphy (GLEE, “American Horror Story”), Brad Falchuk (GLEE, “American Horror Story”) and Ian Brennan (GLEE) meld comedy, mystery and horror in SCREAM QUEENS. All hell is about to break loose for the Kappa House sisters of Wallace University when a murder takes place, exactly 20 years after a mysterious death originally rocked their college campus. The super-charged anthology series is a modern take on the classic whodunit with a killer cast, including Emma Roberts (“American Horror Story: Freak Show,” “Scream 4”), Jamie Lee Curtis (“Halloween,” “A Fish Called Wanda,” “True Lies”), Lea Michele (GLEE), Oliver Hudson (“Nashville,” “Rules of Engagement”), Keke Palmer (“Akeela and the Bee,” “Masters of Sex”) and guest stars Ariana Grande and Nick Jonas (“Kingdom”), among others. With at least one casualty each week until the mystery is solved, anyone could be the next victim – or the murderer.

Two new dramas – the futuristic MINORITY REPORT and the Miami-set ROSEWOOD – debut this fall. Based on Steven Spielberg’s international blockbuster film and the first of his films to be adapted for television, MINORITY REPORT follows the partnership between a man (Stark Sands, “Inside Llewyn Davis”) haunted by the future and a cop (Meagan Good, “Think Like A Man” franchise, “Californication”) haunted by her past, as they race to stop the worst crimes before they happen.

Also joining the schedule this fall is ROSEWOOD. From executive producer Todd Harthan (“Psych,” “Dominion”), ROSEWOOD stars Morris Chestnut (“Nurse Jackie,” “The Best Man” franchise) as DR. BEAUMONT ROSEWOOD, JR., a brilliant private pathologist who uses wildly sophisticated technology and his drive to live life to the fullest to help a tough-as-nails detective (Jaina Lee Ortiz, “The After”) and the Miami PD uncover clues no one else can see.

The next mind-bending chapter of THE X-FILES debuts with a special two-night event beginning Sunday, Jan. 24 (10:00-11:00 PM ET/7:00-8:00 PM PT), following the NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, and continuing with its time period premiere on Monday, Jan. 25 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT). The thrilling, six-episode event series, helmed by creator/executive producer Chris Carter and starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI Agents FOX MULDER and DANA SCULLY, marks the momentous return of the Emmy Award- and Golden Globe-winning pop culture phenomenon, which remains one of the longest-running sci-fi series in network television history.

In 2016, additional new series joining the schedule include devilish drama LUCIFER and modern action series THE FRANKENSTEIN CODE; and two comedies, THE GUIDE TO SURVIVING LIFE and animated BORDERTOWN.

Based on characters from DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint, LUCIFER stars Tom Ellis (“Merlin”) as the charming, charismatic and handsome-as-hell original fallen angel, who, bored and unhappy in Hell, takes refuge in Los Angeles, where he uses his gift of persuasion to punish bad guys. But the longer he’s away from the underworld, the greater the threat that the worst of humanity could escape.

In THE FRANKENSTEIN CODE, from executive producer/writer Rand Ravich (“Life,” “Crisis”) and executive producer Howard Gordon (“Homeland,” “24”), a disgraced, 75-year-old ex-sheriff, whose life ends at the hands of corrupt cops, is brought back to life and given a second chance by a pair of young tech scientists, as a 35-year-old (Rob Kazinsky, “True Blood”) with unpredictable near-superhuman abilities.

NEW GIRL will return to Tuesdays in January, for its first-ever season of virtually uninterrupted originals. These weekly all-new episodes will platform THE GUIDE TO SURVIVING LIFE, the new young ensemble comedy about a group of friends living together for the first time. Each episode is told from the perspective of COOPER BARRETT (Jack Cutmore-Scott, “Kingsman: The Secret Service”), a wickedly charming and deeply flawed recent college grad whose life is filled with terrible choices, excellent mistakes and fantastic misadventures.

A new animated comedy from FAMILY GUY’s Mark Hentemann and Seth MacFarlane, BORDERTOWN is a satirical look at the cultural shifts taking place in America. Exploring family, politics and everything in between with a cross-cultural wink, the series centers on two very different families living in a fictional Southwest desert town on the U.S. - Mexico border.

AMERICAN IDOL will begin its 15th – and final – season this January on FOX. A season-long celebratory event, AMERICAN IDOL XV will feature host Ryan Seacrest and judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr., as they search for the final IDOL superstar and pay tribute to the past 14 seasons of amazingly talented contestants and the millions of fans who tweeted, texted and championed their IDOLs.



As previously announced, GREASE: LIVE, a three-hour production of the massively popular crossover musical “Grease,” starring superstar singers, dancers and actresses Julianne Hough (“Safe Haven,” “Rock of Ages”) and Vanessa Hudgens (Broadway’s “Gigi,” “Spring Breakers”), will air LIVE Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016 on FOX. With Hough as the angelic “Sandy” – Rydell High’s most talked-about newcomer – and Hudgens as iconic bad girl “Rizzo,” this first-ever live television production of “Grease” will re-imagine the hit musical for an entirely new generation.

THE GRINDER

How many TV lawyers does it take to try a real-life case in a real-life courtroom? One, and his name is THE GRINDER. Starring Emmy Award nominee Rob Lowe (“Parks and Recreation,” “The West Wing”), THE GRINDER is a new comedy about a famous TV lawyer at a crossroads. When his legal series ends, he decides to move back home and join his family’s real law firm – despite having no formal education, no bar certification, no license to practice and no experience in an actual courtroom. MINORITY REPORT

The future is coming. Based on the international blockbuster film by executive producer Steven Spielberg and the first of his films to be adapted for television, MINORITY REPORT follows the unlikely partnership between a man haunted by the future and a cop haunted by her past, as they race to stop the worst crimes of the year 2065 before they happen. Set in Washington, D.C., it is 10 years after the demise of Precrime, a law enforcement agency tasked with identifying and eliminating criminals…before their crimes were committed. To carry out this brand of justice, the agency used three precogs – “precognitives” Dash, Arthur and Agatha – who were able to see the future. Now, in 2065, crime-solving is different, and justice leans more on sophisticated and trusted technology than on the instincts of the precogs. Precog DASH (Stark Sands, “Inside Llewyn Davis”) – driven by his terrifying, but fragmented visions – now has returned in secret to help a brash, but shrewd police detective, LARA VEGA (Meagan Good, “Think Like A Man” franchise, “Californication”), attempt to stop the murders that he predicts. Meet the Beethoven of private pathologists…From executive producer Todd Harthan (“Psych,” “Dominion”), ROSEWOOD is the story of DR. BEAUMONT ROSEWOOD, JR. (Morris Chestnut, “Nurse Jackie,” “The Best Man” franchise), the most brilliant private pathologist in Miami. Using his wildly sophisticated autopsy lab, he performs for-hire autopsies to uncover clues that the Miami PD can’t see. His new partner-in-crime is Detective VILLA (Jaina Lee Ortiz, “The After”), a Miami PD detective with attitude and demons to spare. While she’s impressed by Rosewood’s incredible abilities, his constant optimism is more annoying than it is infectious. THE GUIDE TO SURVIVING LIFE

Wouldn’t it be great to have a friend who has made all the mistakes in life there are to make, and then tells you exactly where he went wrong, so you don’t have to? THE GUIDE TO SURVIVING LIFE is a new comedy that explores what we all go through on our way to figuring out what life is all about. COOPER BARRETT (Jack Cutmore-Scott, “Kingsman: The Secret Service”) still doesn’t have the job he wants; he’s accidently fallen in love with his across-the-hall neighbor, KELLY BISHOP (Meaghan Rath, “Being Human”); one of his roommates, NEAL (Charlie Saxton, “Betas,” “Hung”), just can’t seem to dump his bodybuilder girlfriend; his other roommate, BARRY (James Earl, “Ground Floor,” GLEE), is a “loveable jackass” who can’t stop getting into trouble; and his 40-year-old-brother, JOSH (Justin Bartha, “The New Normal,” “The Hangover” franchise), a married father of two, is constantly popping in to come hang with the fellas. The one thing they do have is each other. As Cooper struggles to survive each of life’s many challenges – a night in jail, an inappropriate text he never should have sent, an ill-advised household pet – he will guide us through the often-messy, always-hilarious ordeal, so that our lives don’t have to be nearly the entertaining disaster that Cooper’s is turning out to be.

From FAMILY GUY’s Mark Hentemann comes BORDERTOWN, a new animated comedy about two families living in a Southwest desert town on the U.S. - Mexico border. The series takes a satirical look at the cultural shifts occurring in America, where the U.S. Census forecasts that by 2017, ethnic minorities will become the majority. Set against this increasingly diverse backdrop, the comedy explores family, politics and everything in between with a cross-cultural wink. LUCIFER

  32. My first impression is that this is a terrible schedule for FOX. Thursdays and Fridays are going to be very tough for FOX. I see two sub 1 nights for them.

    Elsewhere, why put Scream Queens against two hour The Voice chair turn episodes? That's asking for disaster. Even worse, the comedy block is the lead in. Scream Queens is likely DOA. Rosewood into Empire doesn't make sense either. Rosewood doesn't have much of a chance without a lead in.

    Gotham into Minority Report is OK, but Gotham is not a strong enough lead in for Minority Report to likely survive on its own.

    I'm surprised no Lucifer for fall. It's like FOX gave up and decided not to program. This is a schedule likely to land them in 4th place this fall.

  47. I really don't know who's worse though, NBC or FOX. Because FOX Thursday does not look pretty and those 8pm shows would benefit a lot more by swapping with 9pm. They could potentially be getting 3 flops there because of that and Gotham could benefit from a better lead-in. Seems they're trying kill shows they have and throw a few news shows to the wolves...

    NBC ran scared on Wednesdays because they wanted to see where Empire landed. Now that it's Wednesday at 9 PM, expect Chicago Fire Wednesday at 8 PM. They'll likely announce that today at their upfronts. But their plan of putting new shows after The Voice is smart and I like that they aren't comedies. They are trying to get hits out of Blindspot, Heartbreaker, and The Player.


    With FOX, they aren't putting their new shows in a position where they can succeed. Mid to 1 comedies before Scream Queens? That will be a disaster. Scream Queens isn't destined to break a 2.0, likely won't break high 1s. Rosewood before Empire? Another sub 1.5 demo new show premiere. It's a mess at FOX.

    Brooklyn 99 is perfect on Sundays.
    It will be a long wait for New Girl. Only advantage is uninterrupted episodes throughout.
    Will check out Lucifer and X-Files in January.

  61. The pairings are correct, but the nights are a complete miss. Thursday and Friday won't break low 1s. When 2/5ths of your major nights are in that territory, they needed to rethink it completely.

    For all of NBC's misses, I can't say that about them.

  62. I do not believe, at all, that Bones would do better on Fridays. Maybe relatively speaking but not in absolute terms. The show is not the same show it was a year and a half ago in terms of strength, so I don't see the comparison as being meaningful.

    And while Bones cannot indeed anchor Thursdays, I think giving up Thursdays for low priority filler stuff (Bones, MC Jr, SH) is the right play. They cannot attack all days at once and Thursday is the right day for them to give upon. Because 1) the other networks hare too big there and 2) they have zero established presence there. It is a good scheduling strategy to recognize limitations and deal accordingly. NBC, for instance, is incapable of doing that when needed. FOX did that, so for that, I salute them. Thursdays ratings do not matter for them and they aren't what will measure the success of their fall schedule.

  67. I agree that they can't attack all days, but they didn't attack any day. They just left things as is and said we'll wait to midseason.

    I'll put it this way, Blindspot, Heartbreaker, Best Time Ever with a few weeks The Voice assistance, and The Player have a shot with thier schedule to find a sustaining audience. Fox's new shows do not have that shot. The best chance is Minority Report with a lead in that has been lackluster lately.

    In my opinion, that is the sign of a network that gave up and hasn't learned how to properly allocate their assets to make a viable schedule.

  68. Interesting schedule. I will say that I'm curious about episode orders for Bones/Sleepy Hollow. Assuming that AI airs on thursday again, would they use it to lead in/out a new show? If they did, would Bones be shuffled off again if it is a full 22? But if it is a final season short season it'll have aired all of it's eps to let AI take the slot and then when SH finishes it's 18 ep run...new show? Or does it move to fridays as soon as AI premieres and new show takes it slot?


    I'm also assuming SC is a short season too...So NG+ New comedy takes it's slot if the others get full 22's?

  69. Sleepy Hollow has 18 episodes; at least that was what they said when they renewed it. I think this is what will happen in January:
    Wed: American Idol | American Idol
    Th: American Idol | Sleepy Hollow

    And then February onwards
    Wed: Rosewood, Lucifer or Frankenstein | Empire
    Th: American Idol | American Idol

    Sleepy Hollow will be over by then. Bones can either be over too (if they short the season due to Emily's pregnancy) or sent to Fridays.

  70. I would have preferred Masterchef Jr. on Thursdays indeed but there are two good reasons for it not to happen:
    1) It can only have 7 episode seasons (Due to child labour laws or whatever) so they can't have it there for the whole fall and they would need replacements, moves, etc, which they clearly want to avoid for those low priority nights
    2) By tentatively placing it on Fridays, they can use it midweek if something bomb, like they did this year with Utopia. They wouldn't be able to sell a gap on Thursday, but they can sell a gap on Friday. Rosewood or the comedies seem possible to bomb (my money is in Rosewood), so Mastechef Jr. can be placed there when that happens and run until the end of the fall like it happened on Tuesday this year, with FOX launching something else on January.

    So placing it on Fridays gives them flexibility and stability.

  73. I disagree. Minority Report has a shot and so has Scream Queens. In regards to Scream Queens, although I think the network as a whole would have been much better off with it at 8, it is actually maximized as this hour as it avoids the voice and has completely different dramas on CBS and ABC, and what I expect to be a non entity on NBC. So it is set up pretty well. I doubt it is the type of show that needs a lead-in so the comedies won't hurt it anyway. In addition, they are giving LMOE the best chance they could to grow on Sundays instead of going with the obvious thing to move it to midseason.

    They've screwed the comedies and Rosewood in this process, which is pretty stupid and not at all necessary, but I think they truly don't like Rosewood and are just using it as a placeholder here.

  89. I better enjoy Sleepy Hollow while I can. Between moving it to Thursdays opposite Blacklist and Shonda shows ... and putting it after deteriorating Bones ... and losing Orlando ... unless a miracle occurs, this'll be it. Fox clearly is just giving up on Thursdays. Well, I'll give them 18 weeks on that night. As for Empire, I'd follow that anywhere, but I admit I like it on Wednesdays. For me. Business wise, I dunno.

  99. I kinda understand some of Fox decisions. They didn't move empire because they don't want to mess with it and want to Nurture it. And even as a lead out, Empire helped American Idol, it can do the same for a new show. Also 8 pm is less competitive than 9 pm.

    Scream Queens at 9 makes sense because of censorship. It's a horror series and they might be able to do more with it at 9 pm. Also comedies at 8 pm is going after the success ABC found there with FOTB. With NCIS and The Voice weakening every season, they have a shot.

    I know Thursday is the most important night for networks, but the profit Fox gets on Wednesday with Empire more than cover that so they can prioritize other nights to fix first. Thursday 8 pm is a murder ground with Greys and TBBT, so although low rated Bones is at least reliable. I just pity Sleep Hollow, which will face Scandal and The Blacklist, but as genre show Fox probably expect it to be counter programming. I fear for its fate though.

    I believe Shades of Blue will anchor a Latina block on Sunday's in the Spring paired with Hot&Bothered so that NBC can recreate the magic of Desperate Housewives on Sunday's.

    Putting a show that is on it's last legs ( few seasons ) that not many will watch due to Scandal and The Blacklist ( and whatever else airs ) fills a time slot in the schedule no one would be watching anyway as well as allows Sleepy Hollow to quietly slip into syndication heaven in a few seasons. Maybe FOX is willing allowing Sleepy Hollow to be Scandal/The Blacklist/???/???'s sacrificial lamb so to speak and in the end 'reap' the DVD rewards.

  105. It hit a freaking 6.9 for the finale. If it returns even close to that, then it should be a great lead-in, especially for a premiere. Plus Rosewood has an African-American lead-in so that some viewer crossover potential there.

  111. Again, I feel that you are way too condescending on the networks with development. If Rosewood is a known flop, that is their damn fault. They are the ones who greenlighted bad shows to pilots and they picked a flop from pilot to series. It is not some sort of inevitability which shows end up on a network pipeline. FOX deserves credit for picking up Empire just as it deserves to be brought down from picking up Rosewood, if it indeed is a flop in which they don't believe.

  114. So some snap judgments.
    Mondays: Minority Report paired with Gotham makes sense, but are they not expecting it do well enough to get a back order since they same slot will be used for X Files and then Lucifer? I don't think we ever heard that it is a limited series.


    Tuesdays: Why is SQ not a lead-in? FOX begins their fall a week earlier than the other networks so there would have been a chance for SQ to attract an audience before The Voice came. And does FOX really have enough faith in John Stamos and Rob Lowe to think that their comedies will be self starters opposite The Voice?


    Wednesday: Why on earth is Empire not moving to 8. Yes Part 1 of the finale rated almost a full rating point than part 2 at 9, but it still hit a massive 6.0. If it returns even close to that, that should be a great lead-in for a new show. And I see people saying that Rosewood and Empire are not compatible, which is somewhat true, but if you lead-in is 6+, you would surely benefit somewhat. And Rosewood as an African-American lead-in, so there has to be some crossover.


    Thursdays: Why is Bones premiering in the fall. I think they should have tried a new show on Thursday and used Bones as back-up if any show needs to be pulled or doesn't get good enough ratings for a back 9. This is pretty much the last season of Bones and it should be used as a schedule filler or back-up. Plus Frankenstein Code seems quite compatible with Sleepy Hollow.


    Friday: Not much to say there. Let's see how well MC Jr does on Fridays. If it does 1.0+ that is a win for FOX.


    Sunday Nothing wrong here. I expect LMoE will be replaced by Guide to Surviving Life since I don't think LMoE has a full season.

  119. Perhaps, but if that was their plan, they'd put it on Fridays. Also, genre shows tend to do poorly in syndication, so I don't think that they are looking forward to syndication on that show. I think that FOX actually thinks that Bones/Sleepy Hollow will hold and they will likely be mistaken.

  126. I have to disagree about Tuesday. NBC wants a medical show to work and Heartbreaker's only chance at finding an audience is to be placed after an older skewing show like The Voice. This was a very good match. I wouldn't change NBC's Tuesday schedule at all. It was one of their better scheduled nights.

    In my opinion, Best Time Ever will do as well at 8 PM and 10 PM, but the 10 PM placement means that Best Time Ever will get the direct The Voice lead in for a few weeks and then be able to live off The Voice momentum at 10 PM.

    With Wednesday, I agree. Shades Of Blue or Chicago Fire will end up Wednesdays at 8 PM.

I suppose they will start shooting in the fall and they should be done with the 5 episodes pretty soon (the pilot is already shot I suppose), which means that they would finish filming, have a series finale filmed, and then be asked to come back if, in January, the show somehow is successful enough for FOX to order more episodes? I have a hard time imagining it work...

  138. No the Tuesday schedule is awful.

    It's disjointed because it's structured as Reality/Drama/Reality and that is bound to fail. Yhe schedule should be Reality/Reality/Drama.

    Besides since NPH only has 10 episodes if it were to air at 10, NBC would need another "State Of Affairs" to replace it in November which would be stupid.

    Ideal schedule would be either Voice/NPH/Heartbreaker or NPH/Voice/Heartbreaker so that compatible reality series can be paired together leading into a 10pm drama.

  140. I don't have a lot of time to respond, but the way it works as far as I see it is networks order their pilots based on scripts and sometime those pilots turn out well and sometimes they don't.

    There are probably many times a great script can turn into an awful pilot, but by the time the networks get to that point they are left with the pilots that they've already ordered to choose from. The process can easily lead to weak development seasons, and by the time we get to upfronts there isn't much that the networks can do to fix that.

    I think the base of NBC's logic (which is probably correct) is that Heartbreaker needs more lead-in assistance than NPH (and NBC also needs more scripted hits), so give it The Voice lead-in. That in and of itself makes a certain amount of sense, but don't then put NPH after it! That makes the night such a disjointed mess. If they had to have all three on the same night, I think NPH/Voice/Heartbreaker might have worked best. I would have actually put NPH somewhere else and done Voice/Heartbreaker/Chicago Fire right off the bat instead of holding their top drama CF for midseason(?!)

    These are fair arguments (and SQ does sound like more of a 9 PM show than an 8PM show), but they've doomed the two new comedies to failure by putting them at 8, I think. It's a tough call, though...the night may not have done any better if Fox had switched the hours.

  159. I was having myself a marathon over the weekends, reliving the good ole days of the show. Watching earlier seasons. Sigh. Seasons 1-8 were the best. (yes i still watch, no i'm not behind at all) I've watched since the pilot. I'm glad i had a marathon, it made me remember WHY i loved the show so much.

Maybe it's smart Fox didnt use Empire as a leadin-1.theyd have to tone down content if it moved to earlier 2.Look at VD,Arrow,PLL,BBT..Having a high rated leadin doesn't mean the show after it does well or has its own audience.3.Avoid a 2Broke Girl situation ehere a show is asked to anchor a night before its ready & it crumbles.
