Disney Considering Marvel And Star Wars Themed Channels

18 May 2015

Disney is currently looking into expanding its reach within the television sphere by considering creating dedicated channels for its Marvel and Star Wars properties.

Company CEO Robert Iger suggested such a move during last week's conference call, noting that while Disney already has a major stake in movies, theme parks, and toys, there's plenty of other areas for it to grow.

"We have said that with these channels and these brands -- ESPN, ABC, Disney, maybe even down the road something related to Star Wars and Marvel -- we do have an ability as a company to take product, specifically filmed entertainment, television, movies, directly to consumers," Iger said

Theirs a big enough back catalog of Marvel cartoons/live action shows that it could probably work for a couple of months. They'd have to really expand with new TV content though.

Don't think theirs enough Star Wars content to support a full channel yet.

  2. They could make an Inhumans animated TV show like the Avengers animated show or Spider-Man etc. Guardians of the Galaxy is coming so why not?

  3. I was just thinking the other day that Marvel and DC should have their own channels.

  4. That sounds great! Marvel comics AND Star Wars? YES!!!!

  5. That would be incredible. Imagine all the lesser known characters they could bring to the screen. Only downside would be if all the shows outside of the animated series (which aren't part of the MCU) are part of the MCU then damn the people are in charge of continuity would be hard at work! Trying to figure out where everything fits would be a big task,

I do think this is probably quite a few years away from ever happening though.

+ It's not like they'll air 3 new shows every day. Maybe 5 new shows at MOST for the first year

  7. Oh, this sounds awesome imo. Marvel having their own tv channel! Imagine putting AOS and Agent Carter on there, I'd hope to think that would mean less chance of cancellation for them if they were on it. I'm all here for this ~ and ofc Star Wars too, however that lacks in content as of yet so?

However, the other side of the arguement is of course, would people get tired of it? Would this oversaturise Marvel television? It wouldn't for me personally, because I love all marvel shows atm, but to the general audiences, would they feel like it's too much?

  8. Agreed with the argument that it may be too much, I do think the superhero genre will reach breaking point in the future. There are 30 films from DC, Fox, Marvel and Sony scheduled from now until Summer 2020. That is a hell of a lot, add in all the TV shows and there inevitably will be some kind of fatigue from the general audience.

Like you though I can't get enough of it right now.

  9. yeah and during the day will be repeats upon repeats of the animated shows no doubt.

  10. There's easily above ten DC/Marvel shows now. I mean, that on it's own, is a LOT. To add that to the ongoing list of films, and even games?, they're releasing, it may be too much. But they're making a lot of money out of it, so I can't see DC or Marvel stopping anytime soon tbh. It'll be interesting to see if the comic fanbases start to get a little tired of it too.

  11. Yeah just did a quick check and DC have 7 shows on air: Arrow, Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Gotham, iZombie, Supergirl, Lucifer. Plus a load of shows in development like Preacher.

Marvel have AOS, Agent Carter, Daredevil, upcoming AKA Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Defenders. Plus a super secret ABC Marvel show.

This isn't including the animated shows they both have.

It is pretty crazy. I have no doubt some of these shows and films will end up disappointing in ratings/box office. But until either side have a string of massive failures they will be continuing!

  12. Well I guess there is the syndication channel.

  13. Rebrand Disney XD into into something that caters to a slightly older-skewing audience, with original programming derived from the Star Wars and Marvel libraries along with syndicated ones ranging from cartoons to live action shows and animes (Naruto, Bleach, Blue Exorcist, and the Marvel anime shows).

I think they should do the Marvel one in like 2 years; they can air all the previous animated shows and maybe 1 or 2 new, 3 new live action shows with reruns of the ABC and Netflix shows + air all the movies they have + some Star Wars material too (movies, animated shows) + buy some syndication shows (like Doctor Who, Orphan Black, and other Sci-Fi stuff)

  15. Maybe they replace The CW and move SHIELD there?

OMG I don't know how to feel but I'd like to see May, Leila, Hera & Nat work together. *_*

  17. As long as they produce good CGI, cartoon and live action content related to these brands I'd be fine

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hell yeah!! I'm up for that. Give me some badass cartoons and i'm there.

  19. RIGHT?? THIS^^

  20. I need more than just cartoons though, some live action material and I'm fine.

In fact I wouldn't mind a bunch of live action half hour shows (for lesser known heroes in a more kid friendly way :D)

  21. I'm interested.

    ReplyDelete
  22. eh?

    Marvel owns ABC.
Meanwhile WB (who owns DC) owns theCW

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't think I'd like that. Lol I'm good with the cartoons. The live action can stay on the big screen where it belongs.

  24. I think Marvel it makes sense, because they have enough material to give their channel some variety, but for Star Wars, unless they're going to suddenly produce 6 new shows, I'm not sure either how repetitive it would be, or how Star Wars related it would be. It sounds like a better plan for 2020.
