PREMIERE PREVIEW

SO WHO GOT SHOT?

I'm not actually going to answer that question, sorry! However, the episode begins at the end of season two - when everyone leaves the church after Rosie's and Spence's wedding and Carmen sees Ty putting on the balaclava and raising the gun from inside the car. Carmen tries to warn everyone but she's too late ... THREE people are shot and one of them dies. It's quite a blur when this happens as the action is muted but there's music over the top of it, making it seem pretty surreal. One of the casualties is in a coma for four months - so we have a four-month time jump from the season two finale. The cliffhanger is actually quickly wrapped up and the shooting and aftermath lasts about 3 and a half minutes.

There is actually some pent-up tension between Marisol, Carmen and Zoila. Marisol has had her book (a tell-all about her time as a maid) become quite successful so she hasn't been able to make time for the other girls. She's now really good friends with Evelyn who has a very Evelyn-like reaction to her being the bitch boss in the book. It seems like Marisol is torn between two worlds now. I felt that ever since she stopped being a maid and transitioned into season two, she hadn't really found her place yet. Now she's floating between her "maid" friends and the elite of Beverly Hills. Carmen is in a difficult place herself, screwing a married man who was introduced at the end of season two in the glorious form of Giles Marini as Sebastian. Zoila, now four-months pregnant, realises she can't really hide it much longer and she has no idea who the father is. In typical Devious Maids fashion, there is some funny predicaments in order to find out if Javier or Pablo are the father. Rosie finds out about one of Spence's secrets about how he has been getting money and she isn't very happy about it.

Valentina has been kept off the Devious Maids promos and posters, but as revealed in a promotional image that was released (left), she is very much alive so I have not ruined that for anyone (I hope). The actress has been demoted to recurring and you can kind of tell in this episode. Remi is a little obsessed with protecting Valentina after the wedding incident but it starts to cause a huge strain on their relationship. In other Evelyn news, because she is the best character obviously, she and Adrian are having problems in the bedroom and Evelyn tries to do some creative things to help the situation. The scene with the... creativity... was one of the funniest scenes in Devious Maids. Let's just say it involves German. That's not all though, because the hilarity continues a little later that requires both Evelyn and Adrian to be excused.

And the thing that a lot of people have been looking forward to - the arrival of Naya Rivera as Blanca. Blanca is the polar opposite of the flame-tongued Santana in Glee, so Naya is trying something different with this character. Naya does a fantastic job in the premiere actually and she feels like a very likeable character already. Marisol hooks up her up with a maid job which ties into the return of Taylor and Michael. If you guys remember, Taylor returned as a guest for an episode in season two and told Marisol she and Michael were looking to adopt. Well they got a little girl, and apparently they didn't just adopt her, they adopted a secret. And let me just say, the little girl is really creepy. A lot of shows I have been watching lately have incorporated a creepy-ass child into the mix (for example Salem), they are literally the new craze. Move over superheroes and zombies, it's the dawn of the demon-spawn. The scene in the trailer for season three, where Blanca walks into the room with the blood everywhere - that happens, and the severed limb in Evelyn's garden? That happens, kick-starting a new season promising dark and dangerous secrets.

PREMIERE WRAP-UP

Devious Maids, as it has done in the past, started off in quite a spectacular way for the premiere. A season-long mystery has now been introduced and I feel so lost about what's happened already so tuning into the second episode is a must. For the most part, this premiere felt like a regular episode. The wedding cliffhanger was resolved before the Devious Maids title card, then the characters were explored a little as we find out what they've been doing for four months.

The premiere probably wouldn't have been as good if it didn't end in another cliffhanger where there is potential that a character we know is dead. Yes, the episode had some very funny moments and boy was I glad to have this show back in my life, but it wasn't a truly out-there premiere. I don't know, maybe I was expecting something more... juicy? Scandalous? 'Awakenings' ticked all the right boxes, that's for sure, but it still felt a little scaled down to what it could have potentially been.

Fortunately you do find out who lives and dies from the shooting and you do find out who the father of Zoila's baby is. Some storylines are wrapped or expanded on while more are opened. It's all very exciting in hindsight and the premiere was very good, great in fact, but not as amazing as I was hoping it would be. However, the characters we know and love are back and, judging from what I've seen so far, it promises to be another exciting season of Devious Maids.

Now enjoy some dialogue teasers:

"You're alive!"
"Now I understand why you got a little..." "What?" "Fat!"
"I don't mean to sound rude but don't we have perfectly good orphans here in the States?"
"Oh come on, everyone's talking about it."
"Then you're just gonna have to get creative, now go!"
"I'm sorry I didn't make you proud."
"You'll break his heart if you tell him the truth."
"At the church when the shooting started, I didn't protect you."
"Don't date a man with an accent sexier than yours."
"I did not see that coming."
"Well if they weren't stupid, they wouldn't be maids."
"I had sex with another woman's erection?"

Got any questions about the season three premiere of Devious Maids? Love the show as much as I do? Let me know in the comments and be sure to watch the season three premiere on June 1st on Lifetime!

  3. Everyone really will love the premiere. And those photos of Naya in the premiere were both amazing, exciting moments too! BTW, love your site. It's the best Devious Maids dedicated fansite out there! Keep up the hard work :)

  4. The episode was so fun and interesting at the same time.
I'd missed it really much. I really thought only one person was shot because we only saw Ty shoot once.
That twist in the last minutes though... I'll sure be watching every Monday night.

  5. Definitely agree there - fun and interesting. It just felt like Devious Maids from start to finish, it hasn't lost its touch and I'm so glad it's back. I wasn't sure myself about how many Ty shot but I was pretty shocked three people got hit. Guess they really wanted some casualties.

So weird to say Monday nights now, I hope it transitions well into a new night.

  6. Thank you ! I'm happy to be here since the beginning (and before), and so glad we saw Pilot, 2x01 and 3x01 before the airing date ! Really loved this first episode, lot of things happened, love this show, and everyone will love it ! Hope the ratings will be better than last year

  7. Now if only WOEE was still around and Lifetime aired it back to back with Devious Maids this summer. That would have made a spectacularly must-watch 2-hour block every week.

  8. I am really hoping the move to Monday will be beneficial to the show. I want a ton more seasons of Devious Maids, season 3 cannot be the last one! I hope we get to see more episodes before the airdate - I always feel so special when I get to see an episode to write a special preview post for :D

  9. You just voiced my absolute dream there. I honestly, honestly wish WoEE was back, and I have no idea why Lifetime didn't just do that last year with both shows during the summer. I think both suffered quite a bit and I know the first 2 episodes of WoEE season 2 aired with the last 2 of DM season 2 and they were the season's highest ratings - such a missed opportunity for Lifetime. Really disappointed about WoEE, I'm never ever getting over it :(

  11. I'm sure Pablo is the dead one. It seems to be the logical way, after the end of the second season.

  12. Good theory, you'll find out if you're right or wrong on June 1st ;) That would certainly put a spanner in Zoila's and Valentina's lives.

  13. Well, since I'm admin on the DM wiki I know some spoilers from the future eps. Zoila's storyline seems to be quite strong this year :D

  14. Ahh I didn't realise. I visit the DM wiki regularly when the show is on air and I was just on it yesterday too, you're doing a pretty amazing job with it! Can't wait for more Zoila.

  15. Thank you :) it is nice to see our work is useful for some people ^^

  16. Oh definitely, and being an admin on a wiki is hard! I created a Ghost Whisperer one about 5-6 years ago and it was so hard to maintain, I gave up after a few months. Totally commend you for keeping up that hard work.

  17. I think you're gonna love the premiere ;)

  18. Season 1 was average but Season 2 improved drastically IMO.Every episodes were entertaining & full of twists.Plotholes were kept to a bare minimum. So,my expectations are quite high for this season.June is going to be jam packed for me with this one,Hannibal,UTD,Mistresses,OITNB etc.

  19. Most of season 2, for me, was great, but I felt like Marisol was floating a little and didn't find her place if you know what I mean. Might have just been me though. But yes, season 2 was a little tighter than season 1 and season 3 already seems to be going in the right direction. June is jam-packed for me too, and I'm reviewing quite a lot of shows again haha.

  21. Same! It's a total guilty pleasure and I'm sure you're going to love the season 3 premiere. Thanks for reading!

  22. The year wait for this show has killed me! I'm not going to be doing the regular reviews for Devious Maids, I'm only going go be doing the advance previews if we get screeners as the regular reviewer is deaf and the screeners don't come with subtitles. I am back-up though so if he can't find time for a review one day, I'll step in :) You are so right about Giles Marini! He's been stereotyped as a cheater now, bless him.

  23. Thanks for reading Deny! The two weeks is going to be painful, and if there aren't any screeners for Devious Maids after this one, I'll have to wait 3 weeks for a new episode :(

  28. Watched it a couple of hours ago.As promised, this is my POV-

    I,for one,loved it.
During the shooting in the beginning,i noticed
Remy ducking and i found that very odd.Imagine my surprise when they
addressed that part-Brilliant detailing. The mystery setup was
intriguing, can't wait to find out more.Evelyn stole the episode for
me.Rebecca Wisocky was born to play this role.I'm Team javier too but
i'm pretty sure he will dump Zoila the instant the truth comes out and
it will, very soon in the worst way possible. It always does.
The only things i didn't like were Rosie & Marisol's arc. Both felt odd & rushed and with no reason.Bianca-Need to see more episodes to say anything about her.For now, she's okay.
The Mystery-It's related to Taylor & Michael's Adopted child or so they
announced.Something fishy is going on here. That girl was so
creepy.Michael gave some Henchmen money to get some work
    done(Murder,perhaps) during Marisol's book-signing party.That person
murdered the perp and put it underground in Evelyn's
Garden.Unfortunately the dog dug it up-something was sticking out
perhaps to draw the dog's attention.Plus did you notice that little girl
deliberately cut her fingers to show she was bleeding. That was shady
too.Plus that ending-So much blood.Taylor was looking like s**t when
Bianca stumbled into her. What went down in that room?
So many questions-I hope we get some answers starting from episode 2.
BTW,I am not feeling Sebastian's character at all. He's an eye candy but that's about it.
I skipped your detailed Advance previews & all the promos. Now that i read it,thank god i didn't beforehand. It spoils a lot.Especially, anyone can tell who got shot by that spoilery screenshot in the beginning.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I thought Remy ducking wouldn't have been addressed either as it seemed a little comical in a way, but I was very glad they got round to that too. It took 4 months for the characters to resolve it - that's a long 4 months!

Couldn't agree more about Evelyn - she steals every single scene! "I had sex with another woman's erection?" Hahaha. The truth always wins out so things aren't looking good for Zoila but that's so exciting too - how long will she keep up the con? Rosie's storyline was so minimal and I think Marisol's was needed so she could learn a lesson about friendship. Still wasn't the best of the episode.

Oh yeah I did notice the little girl do that. What a creepy little girl she is. Why was Taylor trying to hide it when she should have phoned the police. Something definitely fishy going on! Far too much blood to be an accident. Definitely agree on Sebastian haha.

So sorry about the detail of the preview! The photo was a bit of a giveaway wasn't it, but it was sort of predictable Pablo would die anyway. With the ratings of the season 3 premiere, it won't surprise me if Lifetime cancels the show like they did Witches of East End :(

  30. Well, I liked it very much, but it's a little sad knowing that Edy Ganem is leaving the show, I'd like her to interact more with the other characters in the next episode, to give her a good ending.
Evelyn is so perfect, I agree with you. That couple is my favourite!
I'm worried about Zoila, I don't want her to suffer. First, she lost her husband, then her daughter's gonna leave her, but we don't know if it'll be in good or bad terms... Anyways she'll lose Valentina too... And then there's Javi.
I don't know if the leg is related to the creepy girl, or to the blood in Taylor's house, but I think Michael wanted that girl out of his house, that's why he gave mony to that man (whose face we don't see).
Marisol's arc is kind of interesting, where does she belong? Carmen is a mess, she had Sam! Well, I supposed it's karma, dunno.
An my poor Rosie... I'm looking forward to seeing the moment she knows Ernesto's alive... She always compare Spence with him, I think she still loves him.
For now on, I'm gonna read all your stuff about Devious Maids, I can tell you're such as big fan as I am ;)

  31. By the way, sorry for my english, I'm not good at it, I'm from Veracruz, Mexico.

  32. Don't apologise for your english, you're english is totally fine :) Very grateful you shared your thoughts :)

  33. Aww I am so sad too about Edy Ganem, I was hoping she would stay even if she wasn't a main character anymore :( She totally deserves a good ending. I didn't think of Zoila's situation like that but yeah, she's going to be abandoned by everyone in her family - and she'll be a single parent in a high-demanding job. Fortunately she'll still have her friends to comfort her. The question of where Marisol really belongs started with season 2 I think as I didn't feel like she fit in very well that she wasn't a maid anymore.
Meeeester Spence! Love Rosie! Aww thanks for reading and leaving your kind words! If SpoilerTV gets any more screeners for Devious Maids, you can bet I'll be writing the previews for it, though someone else is doing the actual reviews for the show. You're right though, I am such a big fan of Devious Maids and it makes me really happy to know you are too! :D
