Chicago Fire - Category 5 - Review

Chicago Fire MR ReviewsThe suspicion surrounding Rice finally boils over this week and causes quite the rift between Truck and Squad. On scene after the first call, Rice doesn’t help when he tells Severide, “The way lines are blurred between Truck and Squad around here, no one would guess that Squad 3 is one of the elite firefighting units in the city.”
Now I don’t know how it works in the real word but on the show, I understand that while there are these two different units, they operate as one team both on scene and in the house. Rice knew exactly what he was doing when he said that; he knew saying those words to Severide would only make the divide bigger. And as if that weren’t enough, Rice’s words turn Severide into the immature guy of season 1. Not cool, Rice. Not cool. Severide has come so far and seeing him revert like this was painful to watch.
I want to see both sides of this. On the one hand, do we really have firm proof that Rice is a bad guy? I don’t think we do. And knowing what we do about his backstory (losing his wife, being a single, committed dad), I want to root for him. But you can’t deny there’s something off with him. On the other side, there’s Otis. I think it’s valid for him to have suspicion, but he might have taken it too far too soon. Is his jealousy and desire to move off elevators what motives him? I don’t know.
One of my favorite things about Boden is how little crap he will put up with. As soon as he gets wind of the situation, he looks to his two lieutenants to shut it down. Casey and Severide have been doing so well, and I hope this doesn’t pull them apart. But when they finally talk about the issue, Casey plays the Darden card saying, “That’s always a great move, drawing lines between Truck and Squad. Like when you decided Squad doesn’t vent right before Darden went up in flames?”
Ouch. I understand what he’s saying and I agree with his viewpoint, but bringing up Darden was the lowest of blows. But, whether it be Dawson’s disappointment, Casey’s harsh words, or something else entirely, Severide proves himself not only by a crazy act of heroism but also by confronting Rice.
Elsewhere…
I’m thinking Chili could be a great permanent addition to the cast. She’s struggling to make ends meet which makes the promotions for her new drink, Chileeze, difficult to support. As expected, the one to step in as a guide/cheerleader is none other than Herrmann.
Herrmann sets up a fundraiser event at Molly’s for Chili and her Chileeze drink. She doesn’t get a chance to finish her presentation though, as the issues between Truck and Squad steal the show. Even Dawson, normally the amicable one, is clearly disappointed in Severide. Come on, guys! I felt so bad for Chili. She’s worked so hard and it’s clear public speaking isn’t her favorite thing to do.
We learn a bit more about Chili this week. Her dad, who passed away, is the one who came up with the idea for Chileeze. I do think there’s still something big in her past that we don’t know yet, but she seems sincere and Herrmann agrees. He talks with Cindy and they give Chili a loan to get the ball rolling for Chileeze.
Casey and Dawson are definitely making progress. I caught some heat last week when I said Casey deserved someone better, and I feel like should clarify. I think Dawson shut down – for whatever reason, the job, fear, I don’t know. And when she shut down, she quit trying in her relationship with Casey. Casey deserves better than that. But I do think that Dawson has come alive again and it’s clear she loves Casey and might just be at that point where she’s ready to fight for him. This Dawson is someone Casey deserves.
Jack Nesbitt tries to woo Casey back to the club after their falling-out last week. Casey’s having none of it, saying he’s done with his work at the club. Meanwhile, Voight reaches out to Casey because Nesbitt may be involved in human trafficking. I love that it’s Voight who reaches out, because it’s been long enough that I almost forgot about everything that happened between these two. The storyline with Casey is what made Voight such a polarizing character and ultimately resulted in the spinoff, Chicago PD.
Antonio also jumps in on the case (love when he appears on Fire!) and Casey agrees to go undercover. Chicago PD’s Mouse gives Casey a special phone to take with him to the club. Things get a little dicey when Casey goes into the back room (does anything good ever happen in a back room?) with men who are clearly up to no good. They pat Casey down and ask for his phone. He’s obviously reluctant to hand it over, and Nesbitt notices that hesitation. But before we can see Casey make it to safety, the episode ends and we’re left not knowing how his meeting went.
What did you think of the episode? Next week is the season finale, what do you hope to see? Will Rice stick around? It seems from the preview someone might not make it out alive (yet again), who might that be?
I have this crazy theory – what if Boden dies (I would need so many tissues) and next season we see Casey as Chief, which would not only free up the lieutenant position for Herrmann, but cause friction between Casey and Severide? It’s a longshot, and I don’t want to see Boden go, but what if?
Do you have any theories for how the show will move into season 4?
I'm so over the entire "Casey deserves better" thing. With all due respect your arguments are just not valid, especially with the way Casey behaved after the break-up. I mean where have you been this entire season? Dawson wasn't the one to shut down AT ALL. Like I've said last week, she was the one who fought when the relationship was going down, she was the one always trying to reach out to Casey when he'd give her the silence treatment. She wanted to take a break? Yes! But I didn't see Casey refusing or going after her. I saw him accepting him and then jumping on the occasion to screw another woman....and he enjoyed every minutes of it! Dawson certainly stayed faithful to him and she handled knowing about Casey's little adventure very well imo. Why should she fight for him? If anything, she should have had as much fun as him and sleep with other men. Cause now I'll never be able to feel like there's some sort of "equality" in their relationship and I see Casey as someone who'd go to another woman when things goes wrong with Dawson. Again, they both made mistakes but turns out HE handled the entire situation very badly as opposed to her. The truth is that he was treating Dawson like crap and she didn't deserve half of it.He wasn't fair to her. She deserved better!
ReplyDeleteUp until this review all I could think of is that Boden cannot doe bcos no one will be able to make it Chief...but after teading this it clicked! Casey being Chief and Hermann Truck Lt would make sense...but I don't want Boden dead & no one else in that House should die. I have seen enough of CF/CPD deaths :(
ReplyDeleteBut if someone has to die my money is either on the Chief or Cruz :'(
I've read your numerous pro-Dawson comments here and I'm fine with your fangirls and anti-Casey bias b/c we're all entitled to our own opinion. But there is no need to sound so aggressive to those who don't share your Gabby worship! "No matter how much work gets to us, we never bring it home" Sounds familiar? It's a basic rule if you work together and want your relationship to work. The rule Dawson broke again and again. I think it's mostly her fault that it didn't work. Dating in the House is forbidden for a reason. She should have waited for a Candidate position in another firehouse but she wanted to stay in her comfort zone at 51....Anyway, she broke up with him b/c she chose a job over him, and as a single man Casey could screw whoever he wanted. Did you expect him to become a monk?! Gabby has no right to complain (which she didn't and it seems to me that her loyal fans were way more dramatic about Matt's unfortunate affair with Beth than Dawson herself ;)) The same goes to Gabby. She also could date other guys if she wanted to....And it's not like she is a saint. She jumped into Halstead's bed right after she misinterpreted Matt's kiss on her cheek as a rejection...
ReplyDeleteI totally disagree that he treated her like crap. He supported her decision to become a FF even if he thought it was a hasty decision.
Ugh I am so over the gabby dawson show its not even funny. Casey does deserve better. He needs another Hallie (a classy woman not some...lol i'll keep it G-rated for the kids) I mean lets not forget she cheated on mills with casey and then went from casey to halstead; lying all the way. She still lies to casey about halstead! Dawson is the one to blame IMO for the majority of it. And those that bash casey and praise saint dawson need to relook at the show! When he wanted to talk she pushed him away so she can cry all she wants about matt going to other women when she's the one with the petty head games. she fought for her own self and that's all she's ever done since season one. and after being with dawson why wouldn't he enjoy being with another woman? And at least with Dawson pushing casey to go undercover I can hate her even more if something happens to him, but it really doesn't take much haha
ReplyDeletemeanwhile all the squabbling this eppy was lame. I did feel sorry for Chili in the Molly's poor thing and IMO Rice has to go. He lied to Severide and is the one causing the tension in the house when he should be manning up and trying to keep the peace. Speaks to his character or lack thereof. I hope its him who goes and not Boden b/c I don't think he's ready to go yet. Not a fan of the whole Casey/Voight thing. its old. its tired. Voight's moved on. I'd rather have casey in the field doing his "Real" job instead of playing cop for some cheap whump and dawson guilt. pass.
troll alert ... dawson haters are out of the woodworks. Like someone said not everybody is a dawson lover also not everyone is a casey "worshiper" or lets say a dawson hater. And this extreme comments regarding one character is annoying. Not fun guys.
ReplyDeleteI like a good debate but this starts to become a pi*****g contest. I am so over it
Please go rewatch the series, get your facts and timeline right then hate on a charachter.
ReplyDeleteMuch like you or anyone else on here I am allowed to state my own two cents on a review right? anyhoo....
ReplyDeleteEveryone is. I was pointing out that you don't gave the timetable and the facts right especially foar such a strong and passionate comment
ReplyDeleteDidn't feel mine was stronger than anyone else's but if you don't feel its right, I'm not gonna argue. its as I remember in season one, I know all those factors are correct so if the order is wrong...well i'll blame the memory. and I hope your troll comment was directed at others b/c just b/c someone has a view that might be different than yours doesn't really mean we're trolls. A troll attacks another person (human being not a fake character) for no reason. I stated my 2 cents like everyone else. *le sigh*
ReplyDeleteI think Dawson shut down – for whatever reason, the job, fear, I don’t
ReplyDeleteknow. And when she shut down, she quit trying in her relationship with
Casey.
Ummmm......Casey shut down first.Dawson tried to communicate for awhile and then she gave up.
again you have the facts wrong not just the order. Please notice i said facts not opinions dear, got it ? It your bussines that you want to share with the world that you hate dawson.
ReplyDeletei am all for a proper debate but character bashing isn't ok just because you don't like a character ( whatever the character is ... Dawson, Casey, Otis and ao on.)
P.s if i targeted you specificaly i would have written as a reply
have a good day.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day too!
ReplyDeleteI think there was a lot of asshole behavior in this one. I've never liked Otis but these guys know him. They know he's a joker. A silly guy but one who knows his job. They should know him well enough to know this is Otis being serious. If he honestly feels there is a problem, they should have at least talked to him seriously instead of shutting him down, getting in his face and treating him like a low probie on the totem pole that they have no respect for. Severide didn't act like a man in charge. Casey didn't either but at least he took the guys outside to talk before he shut them down.
ReplyDeleteIt's going to blow up in their faces. I don't care what reasons Rice has, he is shady as hell.
As for Dawson/Casey. They are my second least favorite so I normally tune them out.
Where I work, if our EMT's, Fire and Rescue or Disaster Mgmnt acted like these guys are acting, they would be out of a job or doing grunt work before every call. It's ridiculous. It's not high school with the jocks on one side and greasers on the other. They are in the business of saving lives. It doesn't matter who gets there first, as long as everything that can be done, is done.
The Chief is still a badass and I love him.
I really don't want Boden to die either! It clicked for me watching the episode and I started to panic. I really hope I'm wrong!
ReplyDeleteThere was absolutely fault on both sides, I won't deny that. I think Casey should have fought more. But I do hope they find their way back. As much as I would love to see Dawson with Mills again, I know that she is meant to be with Casey.
ReplyDeleteIt really was a bunch of men acting like children. And that look Dawson gave Severide said it all! I loved it.
ReplyDeleteBoden is the best and I sincerely hope I'm wrong about him dying. But it just makes sense.
Yep,Dawsey is the endgame couple.
ReplyDeleteI think Boden is safe. From the storytelling perspective they have much more to tell with him in, than with him out. The "this job is dangerous and we miss the people who leave us" story was already told. With him they can tell a succession story and that's much more compelling while he's still around.
ReplyDeleteFor starters, neither Severide nor Casey are ready to replace the Chief right now. They are both lieutenants -- and Pridgeon mentioned "Captain exams" to Severide earlier, so that needs to happen first, before either of them will be ready to be the Chief. Then, Chief mentioned that he would be overlooked in the next round of promotions, because of the Cruz situation (when he traded Cruz's driving spot for his promotion after the Trucks collision). The situation when another Chief replaces Boden was also already told and it worked well as a three-episodes arc.
So, what I think will happen with regard to Boden is that next season either Casey or Severide will make Captain (I think Severide, 1) because Casey is in the lead (when Chief's not around) by default, that's the mutual agreement between them and 2) because Severide is less suited to be in the lead of a larger group of people as evidenced by the last episode (disclaimer: I love Severide to pieces) -- so him getting the higher rank before Casey would create conflict), that storyline might take up to a year, mix things up, the other Lt could go Captain, and then Chief would get higher up the ladder, get out of the House, to a position currently occupied by Tiberg and only then -- probably Casey -- would succeed him.
Killing him off now leaves us with Pridgeon agan, with a hint of Shay. That's just repetitive.
Anyway. That's how I keep myself sane till Tuesday. ;)
I think Casey would make a great chief, later anyway- he'd have to make Captain first at least, I think he has the personality for it, but its a little too soon, that is, if Boden dies. From what I've heard, there won't be a death in the finale, but that doesn't rule out November's premiere by any standard... If you had to pick someone to die, who would you pick? I can't really pick anyone, but if it came down to it, seeing Mouch go wouldn't bug me much... I'm still trying to profile Rice, I think he means well, but he's turning Severide into an inmature child... So I can see why Casey played the Darden card, even if it was an incredibly low shot... Love the review! can't wait for tonight!
ReplyDeletesome people... note ^^^^ (not you, let's be clear ;) )
