To my Castle fans around the world, as of late yesterday I am surprised and saddened to learn that I will no (cont) http://t.co/ShjcoiU61Z

When ABC’s Castle returns for Season 8, at least one familiar face will be missing from the 12th.
Penny Johnson Jerald, who joined the procedural in Season 4, has been relieved of command, as Captain Victoria Gates.
TVLine hears that Jerald’s exit is one of several creative tweaks that Castle will be making for Season 8, under new co-showrunners Terence Paul Winter and Alexi Hawley.

Oh no! I love Gates. This is sad.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness!!!! it always annoyed me when they called a WOMAN "Sir"
ReplyDeleteCan't be annoyed when she asked to be called that.
ReplyDeleteSo, then Kate as Captain who walks the street? and on the side runs for senate?
ReplyDeletebummer as I liked her character even though she wasn't onscreen a whole lot. Perhaps this could serve as a possible landing spot if Beckett doesn't end up running for Senate...either way, I'll miss seeing Gates terrorizing Castle... lol
ReplyDeleteDon't watch the show, but calling the woman sir is standard practice in the military, afaik. I saw it as just having a single term for the same honorific instead of separating them. There's no insult meant by it.
ReplyDeleteThis totally bums me out... I love PJJ and Gates... She wasn't in every episode but she brought so much to the table... Dumb move for predictable result (Kate becomes Captain)
ReplyDeleteGo ahead assumption: Beckett becomes the new Captain of the 12th. But who knows? I actually enjoyed Gates' stoic character. I'm gonna miss her.
ReplyDeleteWell she was barely a main character as it was. Her only tie into the main storylines was she was the opposite of Montgomery. They don't even really have to address her leaving.
ReplyDeleteExactly, she's a woman, women can be called "Ma'm" or"Boss". Why would she ask them to call her a man?
ReplyDeleteWha... huh, for real?
ReplyDeletei miss montgomery.
ReplyDeleteOk so how will that work. I mean just she ups an goes just like that. I don't think that they can make it that easy.
ReplyDeleteI don't see why it would be that difficult. I'd bet that they'd just mimic the real world and transfer her. I doubt they'd kill her off given that that's how Montgomery exited.
ReplyDeleteI actually quite like the character. I'd prefer she stay but she doesn't really affect story or have a story...so I can understand why the show runners would do it.
I'm going to miss her, from the tone of her message the rug got pulled from under her, she really cared about the show and the fans. I know it seems her role had been reduced lately she will still be missed, best of luck with her future projects, and this just as Castle started to get respect from "Sir"
ReplyDeleteYeah, but in the real world a transfer is not just sudden. I don't know how interpret this right now. I hope her exit is good.
ReplyDeleteThe character was heavily underutilized and missing throughout many key moments and episodes. I think the new showrunners realized this and thought that they couldn't develop the character any further and acted accordingly. Good move all around in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteSo the precinct loses Montgomery, now Gates-So irritating! I loved both the characters very much.Weird creative decision.Something tells me we'll see a brand new Castle by the time next season premieres.
ReplyDeleteSeveral "creative tweaks" is just PR for drastic cost cutting to afford the salary bumps that Nathan and Stana demanded to stay on the show. With escalating lead actor costs and declining ratings, this was bound to happen. Most of the supporting cast will end up exiting.
ReplyDeleteI thought this would happen. It's sad that she will no longer be in Castle. But great news for Beckett story line she is moving up.
ReplyDeleteI am so looking forward to seeing how season 8 is going to start.
This took me by surprise at first but with all of the talk about Beckett wanting to further her career, this makes sense. I love Penny and it's sad to see her go.
ReplyDeleteWell 'Castle' usually skips the summer so her transfer could take place over it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but as i said i don't know how to interpret it for now.
ReplyDeleteNot gonna miss her, i never realy liked her character as a captain unlike Ruben.
ReplyDeleteI liked the banters between her and Castle.
ReplyDeleteSorry that PJJ is leaving but her character was very under used anyway wasn't PJJ studying for a law degree or something so not much time for acting I would of thought. as for a new Captain I would won't Beckett to take over right away but for some inept screw up to take up the post because his/her family had connections, and blame their bad command decisions on other good officers to cover their own ass, then have Beckett and her crew step in when one of the captains orders results in officers being injured and the higher ups at 1PP finally deciding who should take over.
ReplyDeleteSo now Kate becomes the captain. I'm surprised PJJ didn't see that coming,Stana's character was heading for that spot for the last 2 seasons.
ReplyDeleteOh that's sad I love Gates ! Hope will see Penny more in other shows though !!!
ReplyDeleteSo that means that we'll be seing Kate runs her own precinct, that's great !
She'll be missed.
ReplyDeleteHope she does make an appearance or two in the season to give her character a better send off though.
So sorry to hear Penny's character is being written out of Castle! I loved Captain Gate. It seems that the life span of a captain on castle is 3 1/2 years. You can't have two captains in the 12th. The writer could have promoted her character to another position. Are we talking budget here? One wonders what other character will be written out of castle? I certainly hope S8 isn't going to be a dud! Don't worry Penny you have no Scandals in your life. Shonda Rhimes will put you in one of her kickass shows! The best of luck to you!
ReplyDeleteShe got fired?
ReplyDeleteCause she's a lesbian, duh?
ReplyDeleteBecause in the end, what matters is that the leads stay not the supportings, who cares about supporting roles, right?
ReplyDeleteAnyone who believes this is purely a creative decision is very naive.
ReplyDeleteNathan and Stana be rolling in the $$$$$$$
Just when we were being to really like her! It saddens me. Penny, you will be missed and please stay in touch with us and let us know what you are doing!
ReplyDeleteit sure looks like it... in her Tweet she says she was "Surprised and Saddened"... it seems those new showrunners are going to ruin Castle into the ground now... UGH !!!
ReplyDeleteGoing to miss her.
ReplyDeleteTheir wardrobe costs alone are part of their high expenses. When Stana's coats & jackets are in the thousands & the red dress was over $4,500 & they hand make Nathan's clothes, There are other options if they are counting costs.
ReplyDeleteI know this is old news, but I just heard it yesterday. And all I have to say is awesome. Couldn't stand her character for a second. Probably because she played such an evil b*tch in 24 (can't remember the name right now). Anyway, glad she's done. Don't even care if Beckett becomes Captain (she did pass the test) or they bring in someone new. Can't possibly get worse, can it?
