FINALE REVIEW

"Well partner, after all we've been through this year,
whatever comes next I kinda feel ready for it."

Aww, what a sweet, perfect little finale. I decided to scrap the recap and just go into a full-blown review instead. We had the storyline of 2 Broke Girls moving in the one direction this season - the continuing failure of Max's Homemade Cupcakes and Sophie's and Oleg's wedding, and this finale was very transitional in that both storylines came to a head. It was a great episode that tied things up very neatly while promising us a bright future for the girls. One thing this episode wasn't short on (Han jokes aside) was some classic sitcom moments. The subway scene reminded me of some of the good old days when Max rode the subway and accidentally kissed a woman on the lips. So much more could have went wrong though and I feel like the episode didn't take full advantage of what it had to offer.

Same kind of goes for the wedding. It was still bonkers and crazy and awesome, but maybe not as bonkers as I was hoping it would be. The bridesmaids dresses that Max and Caroline had to wear were actually really nice, and the dress Sophie wore was magnificent. Of course, though, it's as over the top as Sophie is herself, even almost killing Earl. While I was totally worried for him, I was laughing quite a bit when he started to disappear under her dress. Poor guy. I loved the crowns part too - that was so royal and extravegant. Also, Chestnut got to come back and for a good cause too. I think he's been missing since the episode with the models so I sighed a breath of relief to see Chestnut. We need to see more of him, he's very comforting in the world of 2 Broke Girls. But yeah, wedding was great though I expected more.

I had no idea my favourite Aunt from Sabrina the Teenage Witch would be in the finale. I loved her banter with Ronnie, and the whole Bonnie/Ronnie friendship. They're kind of the happier versions of Max and Caroline, and they served an important purpose in this finale. I talked with a few people about this in the comments that the cupcake business has been neglected for some time now, and even Earl points that out first. I loved it at the High when Max just had her epiphany about building someone else's dream, not theirs. Remember back in the day when Max didn't really care that much and didn't believe in herself or her business? Well this showed just how much she cares and really wants this with Caroline. It makes me so excited to see where these two are going to go in season five now that the cupcake business will be front and center again. Also, the very end of the episode was so sweet with Max and Caroline on the airplane about to fly to Paris. It brought back the true essense of the girls being broke but being on this journey together. Season 3 ended pretty bittersweet too with Max finally graduating and her friends attending her Graduation Ceremony, so this felt a lot like last year's finale.

Cupcake Total: $89.00 (down from $3,261.00)

FINALE VERDICT

This was a great finale and it promises a great season five as we see the girls' priorities align with the goals they set themselves four years ago. I have missed the cupcake business and seeing the girls bend over backwards to get it off the ground. We started the season with Kim Kardashian visiting the cupcake shop and tweeting about it - which no doubt helped them - but throughout the season the business floundered to the point of being on the news - and not the good kind. Knowing the girls are going to give this another go is exciting for me, so I see this finale as more setting up what is going to happen next year. Not the funniest episode, but an important one nonetheless. And even though I can't wait to see this cupcake business again, I also can't wait to see how Sophie and Oleg adjust to married life. I hope the writers will find something for Han and Earl, and it appears that the High is a thing of the past which means no more Joedth. While new characters are always exciting and I found Joedth hilarious, 2 Broke Girls works best when the show is about just that - Max and Caroline. But I just feel like crying knowing the show isn't on CBS's fall schedule which means we have to wait longer for the fifth season to premiere mid-season.

FUNNIEST QUOTES

Max: I thought family style service was what I had to do with my uncle?

Caroline: If I see a child in here, I'm calling the police.

Oleg: Spaghetti and meatballs, my family style, which means the balls are kinda small but the noodles are extra long.

Han: You bring out the food in large bowls and the customers serve themselves, as they've been doing since I hired you two.
Max: Good idea Han, the diner food does belong in a big bowl... the toilet bowl.
Han: I don't know what your uncle saw in you.

Caroline: Max, I just found something upsetting on my phone!
Max: A free U2 album?

Max: Sorry gents, my boobs make a promise my bad back can't deliver.

Sophie: I love being a bride. You don't even have to pretend it's about anyone else.
Caroline: Kinda like me when I was rich.
Max: And every day since.

Max: I'll ask the obvious question - did it have anything to do with the rash?

Sophie: What are we supposed to do? It's not a traditional Polish wedding without an ass walking down the aisle.

Oleg: Same family but not related, like the Jolie-Pitt kids.

Caroline: Chestnut is my baby.
Sophie: Donkey was getting a thousand bucks.
Caroline: Baby's gotta work!

Caroline: Wow, business is slower than the third season of House of Cards.

Max: Take it down a notch, you're selling it harder than Anne Hathaway on The Tonight Show.

Caroline: Wow, everything looks so much smaller in here than I remembered it. Like returning to your old high school... or your old high school boyfriend's penis.

Art Garfunkel
Caroline: What's that smell?
Max: Probably the milk. It's been in here so long its own photo is on the carton.

Max: Tell me about it. When you bend over in that skirt, it looks like you're giving birth to Art Garfunkel.

Sophie: He's not dead but I'm not getting upstaged by an Iron Lung.

Earl: Like the wedding saying goes - something old, something new, something borrowed, and someone black.

Max: Okay we have a real situation.
Caroline: You hit someone? Damn it Max!

Max: Really upset, this isn't even on speaker.

Caroline: I'm at the business bottom and I've had nothing to lose since 2011!

Max: Hey everybody!

Max: You guys look like the Four Tops. Well, two tops and a bottom.

Sophie: What do you think girls? Do I look like a virgin?

Sophie: I, Sophie Kaczynski (starts looking at the crowd)...

Max: If we stay here, we're building someone else's dream, not ours. Also if we stay your ass will be the size of a house.

THE SEASON FOUR VERDICT

Season four has been a rollercoaster ride. Four seasons deep and I found this show actually improved slightly over the third season, though it didn't quite become my favourite as Seasons 1 and 2 are sort of fighting for that accolade right now. It's still a great achievement for 2 Broke Girls' fourth season to improve over season three. I found the first half of season four to be stronger than the second as my favourite episodes actually reveal.

BEST EPISODES

1. "And the Fun Factory"
This episode was hilarious from start to finish and had some classic sitcom scenes, including a very wet fight in a laundry room that kept me laughing for ages
2. "And the Move-In Meltdown"
3. "And the Loan For Christmas"
4. "And the Model Apartment"
5. "And the Cupcake Captives"

BEST LINES
(in no particular order)

Caroline - And the Reality Problem - "It's like Dancing With the Stars. Except without the Stars. So Dancing With the Stars."
Max - And the DJ Face - "What is this? 12 Years a Waitress?"
Han: You two have already done it in every public space in Brooklyn!
Sophie: Yeah, and your apartment twice (Han looks at Sophie shocked) What? We didn't even wake you!
Sophie - And the DJ Face - "Caroline, we already have the Ouija Board. We don't need another thing around here that's flat and wrong all the time."
Sophie - And the Childhood Not Included - "In Poland, we didn't have dolls. We'd hire little gypsy kids and carry them around."
Sophie - And the Childhood Not Included - "I just dumped a guy with multiple personalities. Yeah, and he took it okay, and not great, and pretty bad."
Oleg - And the Old Bike Yarn - "I know, I haven't even masturbated since right before I came in here."
Oleg - And the Fun Factory - "Sometimes in the fog, my plane gets lost without a landing strip!"
Max - And the Fun Factory - "Oh hell no, leave my lover alone!" (about Caroline during the fight)
Sophie - And the Move-In Meltdown - "Can it ever just be about me?"
Caroline - And the Crime Ring - "I'm wet..."
Sophie - And the Cupcake Captives - "Girls, we're gonna play What's Sophie's favourite sex position? It's on all fours watching How to Get Away with Murder."
Earl - And the High Hook-Up - "Why hello, is it too late to be gay?"
Max - And the Look of the Irish - "The Sad Lady Book Club is reading Fifty Shades of Grey again. There's not a dry seat in the house."
Han - And the Grate Expectations - "It's time for the traditional best man speech. So listen up, bitches. [accidentally smashes glass] Ow, damn it. [into mic] I am bleeding. Repeat, I am bleeding."

BEST MOMENTS

1. The fight of Max and Caroline vs. Peggy and Carmon in "And the Fun Factory"
2. Caroline gives birth to a fish in "And the Childhood Not Included"
3. Sophie's live-acting Nativity display in "And the Loan For Christmas"
4. Sophia Kachinsky's Vagina Wigs in "And the Fun Factory"
5. The Cupcake Catastrophe in "And the Cupcake Captives"

REFLECTION ON SEASON FOUR

It really was a great season, and when the show had a great episode, it had a really great episode. I think this season probably has the least bad episodes overall. Every season has them so season four was no exception, so there were a couple of bad seeds amongst the really great episodes. I feel like I'm really singing "And the Fun Factory"'s praises here as it was, to me, the best episode of the season and one of the best of the series. I like that season four really went above and beyond to deliver those episodes that could become our favourites, and seasons one and two are hard acts to follow. It's hard to comment on a whole season of a sitcom than it is to reflect on a drama, but I feel like season four had enough standout episodes and moments and recurring storylines that helps this reflection somewhat. It was a great season and I'm glad I had the chance to review it. See you guys for season five!

What did you guys think of 'And the Disappointing Unit'? What were your favourite moments and episodes from the show's fourth season? Let me know in the comments and be sure to catch the fifth season of 2 Broke Girls coming mid-season on CBS!

  1. great review :). i def agree with 100%of what you said! i love how 2BG doesn't really end seasons on cliffhangers or anything like that. Just lots of happiness and hopefulness for the future.

I'm nervous about this whole mid-season nonsense. Hoping the show doesn't get forgotten about then randomly cancelled :(

  2. Thanks Doug, and a huge thanks to you for being a regular on my 2 Broke Girls reviews, always appreciate it! I wonder what kind of cliffhanger 2BG could end on - it's not a very dramatic show. I know sitcoms can end on cliffhangers sometimes but 2BG never really takes itself seriously enough to have one.

The whole mid-season thing shouldn't be something to worry about, I think it's just because football is on CBS on Thursdays for several weeks so TBBT moves to 2BG's slot until 2BG can return. Might do what it did last year and premiere in November or something.

  3. Awesome review! I like how we agree on almost everything. This was a hilarious episode, and it is among the Top 3 of season 4 for me. My list of favourite episodes is exactly the same as yours, only that I'd put The Disappointing Unit third instead of the Christmas episode.

The whole situation was bonkers. It could've been even crazier, but in my opinion, that would've been a little bit too over the top. It was perfect like this. Loved the church scene, and when Max yelled "Hey, everybody!" :D The dresses weren't terrible, which took me by surprise, but I figured that Sophie's would be huge, literally huge :D

These girls can't catch a break on the subway. Every time they ride it, something bad happens. One of my all-time favourite scenes is from Season 3, when they are trying to hold Clair's wedding cake and everything goes wrong in the subway. :D

I can't wait to see the married couple, but I have a feeling that they won't be married for too long. :D
I think that the mid-season thing doesn't mean November this time, more like January :( Now I am going to sound evil, but I am hoping that a newbie show will crash and burn, so that 2BG can replace it soon. In that case, we won't have to wait 'til next year.

Loved reading your reviews, and can't wait to read them next season :) On a sidenote, will you be reviewing Devious Maids, too?

  4. Thanks for being a loyal reader Deny! Always love chatting 2BG with you! This would have definitely been in my top 10, maybe as #6. And you have a point about the wedding, we wouldn't want it too over the top. I guess almost killing Earl with a wedding dress is about as crazy as Sophie can get with her fashion choices :P

Haha oh yes I remember that! The subway is bad luck for the girls, they need to think of other methods of transportation. I hope a newbie will crash and burn too so 2BG can come on sooner, I think they did that with Mike & Molly one year. And I won't be reviewing Devious Maids unfortunately, I just do the previews for any screeners we get and when it comes to Lifetime, we only ever get screeners of the premiere. I am back-up though so if the regular reviewer can't make a review, I'll do it for him :)

  5. yeah thats a good point. i guess 2bg could end on like a "they need a loan for a dream cupcake location and are anxiously awaiting a call from the bank and its not looking good and then the phone rings and the episode ends." now obvi thats pretty far out there lol but still u know what i mean lolol.

  6. That would be great, but we'll see :)
I just had a thought that it would be awesome if they started Season 5 with an episode in Paris. That would be hilarious, but I guess that's just wishful thinking.

  7. I really loved this season's finale, and the review was perfectly in-keeping with that. The thing that I was most excited for was Sophie's wedding. Like you I think I expected a little more - not that it wasn't very funny because it was - but I thought that it would at least take up most of the episode. As it was it happened toward the end, and lasted what I think was the length of an average scene. But, a lot happened in that scene: Max and Caroline dressed AS Sophie was very funny, especially when the former espoused her catchphrase. Earl walking her down the aisle felt nice and fitting, and I almost died laughing when her GLORIOUS dress swallowed him whole. XD I don't think she even noticed, which makes it even funnier. And then the crowns - Han not being able to reach and Oleg having to bend backwards (not the first time) was hilarious, and the way he said his vows with that squeak of a voice just kept me chuckling. I thought maybe Han would end up re-appropriated as the ring bearer but this was an even funnier example of his extreme shortness.

The girls on the subway felt reminiscent of older episodes - I think the most recent subway ride was late Season 3, when Miss Lohan guest starred and a hole was punched through her wedding cake. Seem wedding-related items just do not fair well on that thing. :P One of the best things about the episode was the re-visitation of the cupcake shop. I've been thinking for a while now that the writers just sort of forgot about it, but it's nice to know that the girls themselves abandoned it, and now will be picking it back up. Lol that Earl turned it into a pot farm also.

All the stuff at The High was good, especially the two BFF flight attendants. It was so sweet when they served them champagne at the end. :3 Although I'll miss Joedth - who I think would have stopped recurring nonetheless due to the airport relocation - I think I'll miss John "Big Mary" more. I hope he keeps on appearing, because he's become a favourite of mine I think. Them taking the trip to Paris was nice, and showed me what nice continuity this show can have, which is always nice. I do wonder why the title of this episode was change from "And the In and Out" to "And the Disappointing Unit" cos... I'm not entirely sure what the disappointing unit refers to, but moo.

I'd say this finale exceeds last year's. Although seeing Max graduate was endearing, it didn't feel entirely fitting to the end of the season, because 2BG finales had tended to be about their business and general money problems, as is the series' main story. So yeah, this finale pretty much had it all, and left me overall satisfied. I'm glad to see you liked it too, and your super review did not disappoint.

    P.S. YAY FOR CHESTNUT!!!!!!!!! :D:D:D

  8. It could totally happen! I love it when a sitcom goes abroad - like Friends. Having the premiere set in Paris would be honestly amazing, they need to spice the show up a little.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Oh that is a pretty good cliffhanger haha I would be beside myself with worry all summer over that one.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Thanks for being a loyal reader of my reviews Jdg98! Honestly amazing! Yeah I expected a bit more screentime for their wedding but I think it lasted about 4 minutes - as you say a regular scene. But the points you mention of why it was funny are spot on, and I giggle looking back at it.

I too have to commend the show for its continuity, kudos! The Disappointing Unit refers to the High store in the airport, with its disappointing sales and is called a Unit in business lingo when speaking of financials. I was taken back by the change of episode title too though, I didn't believe it at first until I saw that it had changed everywhere.

I agree, the finale definitely exceeds last year's. I mean, there is more progression here whereas Max's graduation didn't really serve any long-term purpose. And like you said, S3's finale was unrelated to the business. Definitely satisfied and I'm glad you enjoyed the review.

P.S. Let's hope Chestnut is remembered more in season 5!

    ReplyDelete
  11. And Nancy too! I wonder how her kittens are settling in with the lesbians in Han's building. :P I look forward to Season 5 and hope there are no hindrances to the show by this Fall schedule business. You'll continue to review, I presume, which is good; I find your reviews both agreeable and intuitive. :)

It felt that this season had less focus on love interests than previous years - Max had some misadventures with Nash, but that came and went very quickly, and none of Caroline's lovers have been in more than one episode since Candy Andy (Aaaah I miss him :/ And Deek). Makes me wonder if Season 5 will pick things up in that department. Not that I'm complaining because I've also loved the focus on the girls and making end's meat in Season 4's second half, because that felt very in-keeping with the show as a whole, watching them be 2 Broke Girls. But still I wonder...

I think my main wishes for Season 5 would be better utilization of the main cast, by making Han and Earl relevant. I can't really remember the latter having much more than the odd one-liner since Season 1 or 2. I remember and episode where he was hospitalized (had one of my favourite lines of the series in it: "Your friend here just threatened to 'cut me so deep I'd have a vagina'" xD) and an episode with his son wanting to be a comedian, and I think that's the msot Earl focus we've had? Then for Han we've had, off the top of my head, him pulling a gun on a robber and his mother come to visit, two instances I adored. So yeah, more of these two please! Also, seeing Oleg and Sophie as a married couple, cos I imagine that could be very fun! I wonder if Sophie will take Oleg's surname, being as self-centered as she is... And, finally, some actual development in terms of the shop. Although I'm glad they're revisiting it, I don't think they've had much more than a backdoor window since the start of S3.

Here's to another great season of one of my fave sitcoms! :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. This show can be so hilarious/sarcastic and so sweet/moving at the same time. That's the secret I guess. I like that the bond between Max and Caroline is growing stronger. Best Earl line: "I thought I was a goner"...Laughing so hard. Thank you Gavin!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Thanks very much, and yep, I shall be reviewing season 5 of 2 Broke Girls and I can't wait. I look at the season guide at the start of this review and I love seeing a full season worth of reviews and I feel so proud haha. This is the first season of a show I've completed reviewing from start to finish since starting SpoilerTV last August (I got the last few episodes of Mistresses season 2 reviewed, took over from someone who left to review the last half of Pretty Little Liars season 5, and took over from someone for the final few episodes of season 2 of Sleepy Hollow) so 2 Broke Girls feels very special to me right now :D

I would love to see Candy Andy and Deek again, they were great love interests. If the girls get more, I hope they will be there to compliment the girls' screen presence rather than distract from it. You're so right about Han and Earl - they both seem to just be there to either crack one-liners (Earl) or be subject to small jokes (Han). I predict something big will happen to shake up the cupcake business next season - I mean we will get a 100th episode which I hope will be an amazing episode that will provide some hope for the girls. It just has to be special.

2 Broke Girls is definitely one of my favourite sitcoms too and I hope season 5 continues that. I'll raise a glass to that! :D

    ReplyDelete
  14. OMG I didn't even think about there being a 100th episode :O It'll be 5x12, right? It's often around that mark. Gahhh excited - I hope this show continues strong for yours. :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. And the day we were waiting for was finale here. Im gonna be real and tell you that i thought this episode was gonna be all about the wedding but it end up being great just how they play out things.
One thing i like about this show is thay dont care what they joke about and if i remember correctly ths is one of the things people dislike about the show as well. For me it is that they take thinks not too serious and i enjoy that.
The epiosde was excellent Bonnie and Rnnie were a great add (i too was surprised when i see Sabrina's aunt there) they were great friends something like Caroline and Max.
It's kind of a bummer to see the High gone, i really enjoyed the episodes and i Think their boss there was one of the things that made the high so enjoyable.I just hope she doesnt go and be forgotten like Max's boss in S1.
The new schedule scares me too. They do the same to M&M they leave it ahnging till one of teh comedies fails and they put in onschedule but we dont now the exact date it0s going to happen, so i think we need to wish the new comedies fail to get 2BG soon? (God that was such a mean thing to say)
It's has been a pleasure to read your reviews, you always have something good to say and i like that. This one was no exception.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It will be 5x06 for the 100th episode as 94 have aired already. Can't quite believe it, time has went so fast since the show started!

    ReplyDelete
  17. It's been a pleasure having you too Ron, thanks for your thoughts and I always love reading them! We can agree on so much, such as how the show doesn't take itself too seriously so when they deliver some controversial jokes, it's actually pretty enjoyable. It makes you go "ooo" while you just have to giggle.
I hope Joedth doesn't just disappear, but she doesn't really have a purpose anymore now since Max and Caroline don't work for her anymore. I do miss Peaches from Season 1 a little, I'd love to know what she's been up to - being a terrible mother to her babies probably!
You're not the only one wishing for the comedies to fail haha. I don't understand why CBS would do this to 2BG since the show is still a great player for the network and still one of the net's best-performing comedies - plus it doesn't have the help of The Big Bang Theory so it's really isolated on Monday nights to sort of jump-start itself. It's such a strong show.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It's been a pleasure talking with you all season about 2 Broke Girls, I don't think there are very many other sites where I've been able to discuss my love for this show with other people, so thanks for reading what I had to say for this season!

  19. Really doesn't feel like so long ago that I first saw it advertised on E4; the trailers were misleading for me cos I remember being taken aback at first by the adult humor lol :P

    ReplyDelete
  20. OMG same, those E4 trailers haha. Can't find the main one but here's one that brings back memories too:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aAzDGlZqq4

    ReplyDelete
  21. I remember that one! I remember one ad that had the joke: "Marry the ketchups" *Caroline puts them all together two by two* "Okay, now divorce the ketchups..." I just thought it'd be simple Disney-esque humor lol - then the teaser had Caroline's predecessor having sex in the freezer room

    ReplyDelete
  22. Haha I can imagine a lot of people tuning in and being confused, but E4 does have some good promos for the show. Just watched a couple on YouTube - they probably promote the show better than CBS does!

    ReplyDelete
  23. It does, on Thursdays at 8 PM - tomorrow's episode is "And the High Hook-Up" (4.17) #Nashit :)

  24. I actually thought it was a rather uneven season with the comedic elements less so than other seasons, and I would appreciate the show better if it touches more on comedy side (which it has) rather than Han jokes or Sophia jokes rinsing and repeating. For me I still like Season 2 where they actually have a shop next to opposite Candy Andy and there is a progression towards the dream and was really disappointed that the writers had the business fail (though realistic). Even though this is a comedy, after 4 seasons, I hope to see that Max and Caroline will finally have a breakthrough in Season 5 and beyond, and finally when the show ends, I certainly hope they end up "2 Rich Girls" (as a play on the title).

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Jerry! I do agree with a lot of your points, and I definitely hope the series ends with the girls being '2 rich girls' instead of '2 broke girls' but at the same time I don't mind if they stay dirt poor just as long as they're always together - I think that's what is most important about the message of this show, whether they make it or break it, they'll still have each other :)
