Young & Hungry - Young & First Time - Review: 5 Star Sexy

Hey there all you fans of ABC Family’s Young & Hungry! Are you ready to talk about this week’s episode? I know I am. Tons to discus so let's get started...

This week's episode was written by Michael Dow and Devon Kelly. Behind the camera we found a new to Young & Hungry director by the name of Linda Mendoza. A good job was done on both fronts. I like that they brought back Gabi's talkative habits. However I am not so happy with Cooper for not telling Gabi. I wonder how long they are going to stretch this secret out. I'm starting to feel like I'm watching Arrow (and that's actually not a good thing, at the moment).

The setup for this week was Gabi deciding that it was the right time w to take her relationship with Cooper to the next level. Meanwhile, Yolanda and her ex begin sneaking around seeing each other much to Josh's dismay and Elliott's pseudo-outrage. I loved having Cooper (Jesse McCartney) back but everything else was par for the course (well, except for Sophia, duh, she's the best).

While it did feel a little bit like an after school special it wasn't as preachy as it could have been and the show's targeted demo could always use a little reminder about being a responsible sexually active young adult. Although I felt like it was implied that Gabi and Josh didn't use protection and that Cooper and Gabi were planning on not using protection also. But I digress... Not wait, I also didn't like that Josh sort of chastised Gabi about sleeping with him within three hours of meeting him. Then to top that off it was implied that Caroline was pretty much a "slut". Then why were you with her Josh? Huh? It wasn't so long ago that Josh had a random in his bed and couldn't even remember her name. Grrr! OK, now we can move it along...

We open this week's episode with Cooper and Gabi Skyping and it's revealed that Cooper is making his way back to spend a very special night with Gabi, he's even got proof that he's all clean and ready to go. Gabi only needs to swing by the clinic after work and they can commence with the consummating. Unbeknownst to Gabi, Creeper!Josh has been listening in on her conversation and is super shocked that she and Cooper hadn't had sex yet, even though they were in the same bed for three weeks. Gabi explains that the last time she jumped into bed with someone (Josh) it turned into a big mess. Somehow or another, Gabi and Josh decide that's it's a good idea for them both to go to Josh's personal physician to get their tests, so off they went.

Once at the doctor's office, after getting mistaken for a couple and getting the all clear, Gabi and Josh run into Yolanda who is making out with her ex who also happens to work at the same office as Josh's personal physician. Josh scolds Yolanda but Gabi's got THANGS to do, so she butts out and scurries off to meet Cooper.

Cut to Gabi and Sophia in the hotel room that Cooper has rented and they are living it up and taking everything that isn't nailed down. Wait was that mirror nailed down or screwed in? Anywho.. Cooper arrives and Sophia lets herself out.

Gabi gets a little frisky and then puts on the brakes so that she can put on a little show with the aforementioned cap and gown role play. But the sexy fun times come to a grinding halt when it is revealed that the test results she has are Josh's. That little revelation causes an uncomfortable conversation which was followed by the doorknob hitting Gabi on her way out.

Meanwhile at Casa de Josh, Elliott and Josh discuss Yolanda getting back with her ex and wouldn't you know in she walks claiming she broke it off with him and is going on a girls' weekend to get over him. Being the inquisitive lady that she is this prompts her to ask what he was doing at the doctor's office. He tells her and the shows her his results, which of course are Gabi's. Josh freaks out, tries to call her and decides it's best to just go over to the hotel and try to lie to Cooper.

Josh shows up with champagne and tries to smooth things over but Cooper cuts to the chase and just gets down to business. He asks Josh if he has feelings for Gabi and Josh denies it. Josh encourages Cooper to go reconcile with Gabi and that's what he does (but not because Josh told him to do it). On his way home, Josh runs into Yolanda who is actually at the same hotel with her ex.

Cut to Gabi drowning her sorrows with Sophia and starts an interesting conversation about lying, keeping secrets and trust. Which prods Sophia's guilty conscience. Sophia finally does confess but Gabi passed out and didn't hear a thing but Cooper heard it all because Gabi left her keys in the door. Cooper and Sophia talk and decides it's best for Cooper to tell Gabi and Cooper gives Sophia his hotel room.

I'm guessing, in order to take his mind off of Cooper and Gabi Josh decides to become a busy body and his drag his little sidekick Elliott along with him to Coleman's office and try persuade him to leave Yolanda alone because she lacks the will power to stay away from him (also known as dipping in grown folks business). But much to Josh's chagrin Yolanda is actually in the office seemingly "getting her Monica Lewinsky on" and declares she can quit being with anytime she wants. As it turns out, Coleman has feelings for Yolanda and he admits it to her and says he wants to make another go at having a relationship with her once more.

When Gabi wakes up she finds Cooper there and they make up. She tells Cooper that she loves him and she will never keep secrets from him ever again and Cooper decides not to tell her about the Josh situation and reveals that he quitting his job in China and moving back to San Fransisco to be with her. It turns into a cause for celebration and Cooper and Gabi commence to consummating their relationship (quite a few times).

Lastly, we see a happy Sophia enjoying the room service. Maybe a little too much?
PS: When is Sophia going to get a love interest? Elliott's had one and Yolanda has had two this season already.

I'm annoyed with the secret and how they are turning Cooper into a douche bag just to sour the relationship (probably going to happen at the end of the season). Up until this point Cooper was better for Gabi than Josh by leaps and bounds and now he's right in the gutter with Josh. At least he is in my opinion. I also hate that Sophia's heartfelt confession fell on deaf ears, quite literally. But other than that I enjoyed most of the episode but this Yolanda subplot needs to be something else. But at least Kym Whitley is getting screen time. Poor Rex Lee, stuck being the side kick to Jonathon Sadowski's Josh. They haven't had much brotp chemistry this season which is odd because they had it by the tons at the start of the first season. Hopefully, they'll get back on track.

I still definitely think that season 2 is continuing to improve upon itself with every episode. However, they will need to step up their sex scene game, just a little in the future (you gotta put those butts in the seats).

Dear Writers:
I seriously do not care about the help's love lives (outside of Gabi's, of course). There are other ways to flesh out a character other than shoving them into romantic relationships constantly. I’m just about fed up with Elliott and Yolanda continuing to come across very one-dimensional and falling into all the stereotypical tropes. Rex Lee and Kym Whitley are capable of so much more and really sell zingers and one-liners so give the some that aren’t laced with sexual innuendo and double entendres.

PS: Josh is coming across as a creeper. Can we give him something - NOT someone - to do other than pine for Gabi and finding ways to interject himself into her love life? I would love to see him try to take his business to the next level or diversify his interests or even get a hobby of some sort.

  1. I was so ticked off that Cooper didn't tell Gabi about Josh. I'm sure it will have to come up at some point and I'm excited for that to happen. I do agree that Cooper is probably better for Gabi but I'm still Team Josh! I love their interactions and the near misses on their relationship are fun to watch. I also agree about Elliott and Yolanda. They need something else going on. ALL their comments have a sexual innuendo thrown in. I don't mind it but sometimes it's a little too much.

  3. I miss season 1 Elliott. You got Rex Lee use him better. I don't like Josh, it's not a secret but it's like they don't even try to make him likeable since everyone knows he's end game. It reminds me a lot of Laurel from "Arrow" during season 1.

  4. I love Emily Osment but her trying to be "sexy" was painful. Adorkable love between her Cooper is all that I want, LOL. Leave super sexy stuff to Sophia, just saying.

  5. I think she's actually trying to emulate Sophia, knowing how she herself is kinda over-the-top over everything. hehe

  6. I agree about Josh but I do still like him. As for Laurel everyone on here has a different opinion. I personally don't enjoy her character and find her annoying. I'm excited to see her BC stuff but I ship Olicity
