Update: 10:04 Here is the official statement from Showtime
Update: 6th April Looks like the show is still on but with no David Lynch
Dear Twitter Friends, Showtime did not pull the plug on Twin Peaks.
— David Lynch (@DAVID_LYNCH) April 5, 2015
After 1 year and 4 months of negotiations, I left because not enough money was offered to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done.

This weekend I started to call actors to let them know I would not be directing. Twin Peaks may still be very much alive at Showtime.
— David Lynch (@DAVID_LYNCH) April 5, 2015
I love the world of Twin Peaks and wish things could have worked out differently.

Update: 23:11 Here are a couple more tweets that seem to confirm it.
I've got bad news. No official word yet, but it looks like the Twin Peaks on Showtime deal is dead. But remember, Twin Peaks will never die!

ReplyDeleteThis is so sad for the people who worked hard to make this show happen.
ReplyDeleteNooooooooooooooo!!!
ReplyDeleteHow stupid was it to announce this project until all the deals were made.
ReplyDeleteI really hope so.
ReplyDeleteThought I heard something about contract issues with Kyle MacLachlan and issues from Lynch. I just figured Showtime wouldn't have announced the return of Twin Peaks so quickly if they had worries about their two biggest obstacles.
ReplyDeleteshot to fast Showtime, hyping something up only to can it later on isn´t going to create customer trust
ReplyDeleteI blame this on Lynch. He seems like an incompetent showrunner.
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, Showtime should have made sure everything's OK to go.
Interesting...
ReplyDeleteHow come that wasn't the plan from the get-go is my question....
ReplyDeleteI'm 100% sure he didn't make things easy, but I doubt this was all his fault.
ReplyDeleteFunny: one of the first shows of TV Reboot Mania is the first one to get cancelled.
ReplyDeleteSomething like this had to happen eventually, it all can't be resurrections. But it was awfully handled by all parts, nothing should have been oficially announced If there were still terms to agree on.
ReplyDeleteDamn, I was just a toddler on the original Twin Peaks era, but I was looking forward to this... They shouldn't have announced it if the deal wasn't finalized already. What was the point?
ReplyDeleteYes one of these unnecessary sequels, reboots and prequels is dead now there's many more to go. Lol.
ReplyDeleteKnowing Lynch he sure wasn't easy to deal with but the guy kept working hard on keeping Twin Peaks alive, so while he might be a tough personality to deal with I doubt that it was him
ReplyDeletenot really unnecessary, Twin Peaks was left open ended. Unlike some other shows wich are ressurected while having a real ending. Twin Peaks actually requires some closure
ReplyDeleteSo you are saying that Showtime either gave him a low ball budget (which I find really hard to believe) or were not willing to let him go off and make whatever he wanted without at least reading the scripts (which I would believe)?
ReplyDelete25 years later and this show still has disastrously bad luck.
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad. I thought Kyle was signed in January or something. Perhaps the budget for what Lynch wanted to do was way out of whack.
ReplyDeleteI would bet on a variety of issues
ReplyDelete- actor contracts, not many former Twin Peaks alums got big but some schedule issues will always arise
- schedule problems, showtime might've had some expectations in releasing the show while Lynch probably wanted to take time
- budgetary constraints, this is showtime. Why do you think they relocated Homeland to south africa? Cheaper shooting enviroment
- personality clashes
- limiting Lynchs vision, wich is usually his problem. I get both parties there. Showtime wouldn't want to produce something unairable (well, with all their reality crap they already do but that's debatable) and Lynch is a true artist who doesen't want to be limited by outside forces
I read this weeks ago in one of the trades, and from what i remember it was because of Lynch.
ReplyDeleteHomeland season 4 was set almost entirely in Pakistan, South Africa might be cheaper than Morocco, Israel or Turkey, but they did not move the show from North Carolina or anywhere else in the US to South Africa to save money.
ReplyDeleteKickstarter !
ReplyDeleteyou can fake your locations pretty much everywhere with the right budget, I still love how some TV movies and shows shoot for cheap in europe only to fake US locations.
ReplyDeleteCape Town is one of the best enviroments for shooting your stuff, crew members are cheap, luxurious housing for your can be arranged relatively cheap and pretty much the clash of super-rich and super-poor allows you to create a cheap as hell work enviroment.
I know no one that wouldn't want to shoot down there thanks to the cheapness of it all. In case you have a multi episode/season order that goes beyond 30 episodes it's always best to shoot there. Saf3 uses exactly that advantage
not sure it's the money that's the issue
ReplyDeleteIt's possible some important characters couldn't be brought back as at least 1-2 actor(s) dies. It wouldn't be the same show with missing pieces.

ReplyDeleteYou beat me to it. It sounds like everything has been written and it's just that Lynch won't be directing.
ReplyDeleteForever cursed

ReplyDeleteWhat is the issue ?
ReplyDeleteLynch did not direct all the episodes from the original series - there were quite a few directors used. So if they have the scripts written already by Lynch and Frost and Kyle M and other actors in place , why can't it proceed.
ReplyDeleteI'm not buying it until I get the official news and how can they cancelled it after just releasing the Twin Peaks returns promo?
ReplyDeleteLynch has always been notoriously difficult and mercurial to work with. Hopefully they might still get it all put back together again. I really hope so because I was so very excited about its return - all these years I have wished it had gone out in a better fashion. Evil Agent Dale - no way....
ReplyDeleteThis is NOT OK!!!
ReplyDeleteBad move Showtime, really bad move.
ReplyDeleteWell tv.com has tweets from David Lynch with a timestamp after these tweets. Apparently only Lynch is out, Showtime is not... yet.
ReplyDeleteOkay, so word is that it's not yet cancelled, but why did Showtime announce it before all the deals had been made? What a mess!
ReplyDeleteWhat a mess, don't announce a show without proper deals in place. Especially a beloved show's return which many fans were looking forward to.
ReplyDeleteNOOOO !!! :'(
ReplyDeletei hope netflix will buy the rights to do the show revival
ReplyDeleteProbably creative control, with money being just one of many factors.
ReplyDeleteNooo... :(
ReplyDeleteOh, no!! Showtime, please don´t do it without David Lynch. It will never turn out good. :-(
