The Vampire Diaries - Because - Review

26 Apr 2015

While last week's episode was a mixed bag for me, "Because" was actually a step down.  "I Could Never Love Like That" boasted some solid Lily and Enzo backstory, the reveal of the Heretics, and a pretty incredible scene of Stefan turning his humanity back on, alongside the maudlin predictability of the return of the cure and its impact on Damon and Elena.  "Because," on the other hand, felt like not only an in-betweener type of episode bereft of the tight plotting and many twists we've come to expect from TVD, but it was also actually quite depressing.  By the end of the episode, after watching yet more Damon and Elena angst interspersed with Caroline angst and the ever-painful variety known as Bonnie angst, frankly I was about angsted out and left feeling kind of numb while wishing more actually happened in this episode.  But ever the optimist, I'm hopeful that things are going to pick up both in mood and pacing in the remaining episodes of Season 6, with more thrills, romance, and humor to balance the inevitable sadness of what's to come.

"Oh, look at that! St. Stefan has a plan. Let me guess, whoever's holding the kitten gets to talk about their feelings?"  This part of the episode did provide some of the best fun early on, what with Damon tossing one-liners left and right and surprising Caroline at the door of her Bed and Breakfast room when she was expecting to snack on the staff.  But despite the awesome premise of Stefan fooling Caroline into thinking he was still a cold, emotionless ripper, Stefan turned out to be pretty terrible at keeping up the farce (though really, who could have predicted Caroline feeling quite so frisky while pasty, weakening, and deprived of blood?).

After some utterly heartbreaking developments involving a last letter that Liz sent to Caroline, which Stefan burns in an ill-fated attempt to keep his disguise up, Caroline did finally let herself fall into a memory offered by Stefan.  Getting a glimpse of Liz again warmly encouraging Stefan to be there for her daughter (and Stefan's obvious affection for Caroline) after her demise was enough to trigger Caroline's desire to see and interact with her mother one more time.  The tragedy of not being able to connect with Liz caused Caroline to wake up to herself, her feelings, and all that she's done since flipping her switch off.  While not anywhere near as interesting as Stefan's own return to humanity last week, this was surely a potently emotional and devastating scene.  Maybe we've just been a little too inundated with emotions being turned off and on lately, because Caroline's return to the light didn't feel as effective to me as it should have somehow.  Now that she has to deal with the guilt of her crimes and the grief for Liz from which she ran, we should at least be in for an intriguing journey for Caroline, the question being how much she will be able to accept help from Stefan due to their complicated relationship and the role he played in her humanity-free misadventures.

"It's not about what happens if you don't give Elena the cure. You're scared about what happens if you do."  As you can already tell, my patience with the cure storyline is at a very low ebb, but I don't want to keep reiterating that ad nauseam...though this episode certainly took its sweet time drilling the same tired point home repeatedly.  Elena longs for a human life with children and family, one where she doesn't have to periodically relocate to conceal her immortality.  But she also wants a life with Damon.  Meanwhile, Damon was torn between doing "the right thing" by telling her about the cure, or side-stepping the issue so he can be with her despite her unfulfilled longings for the trappings of humanity.  Into this mix, throw Bonnie and Lily, each of whom had their own ideas about disposing of or keeping the cure.  And of course, even Jo and Alaric's well-earned happiness was just a reminder to Elena of what she thought she could never have, so we didn't get to enjoy the Jalaric cuteness all that much either.

I didn't like that all we got of Bonnie, after not having her at all in the previous episode, was sadness and anger, along with more problems in her still-new friendship with Damon (if she accuses him of not really caring about her one more time!  Meh!).  How about a pleasant Bamon scene sometime soon!  What I did enjoy was Bonnie standing up for herself again and putting herself first,  pointing out that to allow the Heretics to return for any reason is just crazy.  That's true, even though I was totally hoping the Heretics (and Kai!) would already be around to cause mischief in this episode.  I can't wait to see that.

Once Lily arranged for Elena to learn of the cure, I was glad that at least Elena didn't overreact, and understood Damon's reasons for holding it back from her.  Yet what is this development with Damon suggesting they both take the cure?  Can you split the cure?  I'm half-intrigued, but still quite wary of where this is going.
Enzo and Lily: This was, oddly, probably the best part of the episode for me, though I still wanted more to happen here than we ultimately got.  I was expecting to get some huge reveal about the past connection between Enzo and Lily at the end of the hour, but instead we just got Lily slipping back into her Ripper ways and Enzo comforting her.  This gives a frightening and poignant impression of just how isolated and lost both of these vampires are, that they need and understand each other so clearly in this random, horrific moment.  I really love the combination of refined, Edwardian lady and bloodthirsty killer that Lily brings to the show, and the unpredictability of her nature was a welcome contrast to how blasé events were elsewhere.  I hope we get to see more of her interacting with Stefan and Damon soon, as there is so much left unresolved between them.  On another note, have we seen the last of Sarah?  I doubt it and also hope not, as I was starting to like her and her relationship with Enzo.

What did you think of this episode, and what do you want to see happen in the remaining episodes of Season 6?  Share your thoughts in the comments!  And be sure to catch an all-new The Vampire Diaries, Thursday at 8/7c on the CW.

  1. I actually strongly disagree with your opion. I LOVED this episode. 6x18 was one of the worst this season in my opinion, it had no point and was a filler episode but this episode sets up the rest of the season and was filled with angst, drama, heartbreak and humor. Caroline finally got her humanity back, the heartbreaking flashback and Caroline crying to Stefan that she ruined everything, the cure drama, Bonnie taking a stand, Lily becoming a ripper. I don't know how you didn't like this one more. Shame but can't wait for this weeks episode, though I'm sad Caroline will not be in it!

I totally understand and respect your opinion - glad you enjoyed the episode so much! I think we all just take different things away from each episode. I'm ready to take some possible heat for not being crazy about this installment, but since I'm usually very positive about the show, it's an unusual one for me! :)

  3. This obviously wasn't the best TVD episode ever, but it had some very nice elements to it. Like the new Bonnie saying what she thinks. ;) What my biggest problem is at the moment is the very obvious lack of chemistry between Nina and Ian. Even after they broke up in real life they could still really make it work on screen, but the last few weeks it feels very forced and tame. The more passion they have to show, the more uncomfortable I get looking at it.

  4. -I really though things would go down differently between Stefan and Carloine, i too expected something more in the end instead it was just more silence and sadness. But i think this dragging things out means thta Steroline is probably endgame.
-I don't care about Delena, to me they don't make any sense and the fatc that they're still together just proves that is was only for the fans.
    - Liked Bonnie in this ep, although we only see her when someone needs a witch since she has no story.
    - I find Enzo to be useless, even when he has a story, because they kept him around without reason now every side he take i just can't find him believable. Maybe if they gave him the SL sooner...

    - I'm liking Lily's witchpires storylines, and i hope she does get what she deserve, i mean really what kind of mother loves a bunch of witchpires and Enzo more than she cares about her own children.

I do love Bon Bon standing up for herself! I kind of see what you mean about Nina and Ian. I think they do have chemistry, but the way the story is winding down kind of just adds a weary aspect to the whole thing. Ian was terrific in this episode when Damon explained why he didn't tell Elena about the cure right away, but I didn't really enjoy the rest of their scenes as much as I usually do.

"what kind of mother loves a bunch of witchpires and Enzo more than she cares about her own children." I love the way you worded that! I really thought the heretics were going to play a bigger role in this episode and that disappointed me. Your point about Bonnie only appearing when they need a witch was true in this episode, and I feel like she had so much more to do early on this season - I miss those times!

I know I'll still keep watching but losing the character of Elena is going to be hard for me! I have a hard time when shows lose their main character in general, and I never saw this coming.

  8. Yes me too and i just have the feelind that julie plec try to make caroline the new lead character but for me elena will always be the lead of the show...

I think so too regarding Caroline, and I absolutely love her, but it just feels strange to have the focus of the show shift like that. We'll have to see how well they can accomplish the new direction for Season 7.

  10. Don't worry the Heretics are going to get out of prison(at least i hope) xD.

  11. I didn't get that feeling, at least to be like Elena means you have to be involved in the main SL and Caroline is not, at least not yet. Elena was a central part of the show and the Storyline were build around her. To me is gonna feel like a different show entirely.

Ha! Sounds like an entertaining wedding to me!

  13. Another excellent episode-
1.Lily was in top form this episode. The way she revealed the cure secret to Damon was unexpected & fantastic! That last scene with Enzo was very sad & tragic-Love them
together(no shipping of course coz that would be too weird for me).
2.Loved all the stuff with Caroline & Stefan-Liz's cameo was perfect but i
would've preferred it more it they didn't show her asking him to date
Caroline-That was a little bit too much, other than that,it was
heartbreaking to see Caroline crying for her Mommy at the doorsteps
    while she walked away!
Elena shouldn't have given her the real letter
at that time, she knew she would definitely destroy it at that time
    & regret it immensely latter.
3.The delena melodrama was okay but
i was kinda irritated with Damon's actions this episode.I'm glad Lily
broke the news coz otherwise Damon would've dragged this secret till the
finale.Damon wanting to take the cure along with her was totally
expected-I called it several episodes ago.Now he will betray Bonnie to
steal the Ascendent from Bonnie & go to 1903 prison world to
retrieve another set of cure existing there,in turn releasing the
Heretics & Kai-Good luck handling that dude!

    4.I feel sorry
for Alaric,i usually love Jolaric but this episode, they felt really
bland & mechanical with zero chemistry-Sorry!
    5.I'm loving Bonnie
after her return from the prison world-she stopped being a martyr &
started to stand up for herself! It's about time!

I agree, the relationship between Lily and Enzo is really interesting, not in a shipping way but in more of a mother/son way (we'll see if they confirm that they actually are!) I was really hoping Elena didn't give Caroline the *real* letter! Sigh, I hate that Bonnie and Damon might be clashing again soon, but that theory makes sense about Damon maybe going back to 1903 to get another cure. As long as we finally get to see the Heretics and Kai unleashed though, I'll find that part enjoyable!

  20. It is stupid to say that Damon will take the cure with Elena, if I remember correctly Katherine died after taking the cure because all the years she missed came rushing in her life, if Damon takes it he will just die after a few months and Elena will be left sad and alone and thats even more selfish than not giving the cure to her. If I am wrong can someone please tell me what really happened because I don't remember.

We can never go back to when Delena was slowly and deliciously being born as a couple. Nina and Ian showed us some serious chemistry back then and my mind enhanced it. Would they make it or wouldn't they, in the face of so many obstacles? The big problem for me now is knowing what's going on "behind the scenes". I know that Delena is dieing before my very eyes and "forced and tame" is an understatement. Reality is coloring the fantasy for me, or maybe it's that I'm letting it. Anyway, it's sad but true - a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

  22. I believe Katherine's accelerated aging was due to Silas sucking the cure out of her. Also if you remember after Katherine noticed the aging process had begun she asked Qetsyia to do a spell to fix her not sure if Qetsyia was ever going to help Katherine but she had the means to so, and now Bonnie has Qetsyia's magic/powers so I am guessing she can fix Damon or Elena if there are any complications from taking the cure.

  23. I liked this episode. Nice to see the true/ complicated Lily starting to emerge. These witches/vamps seem to have some hold over her or is it that they pull power from each other and she needs them to survive? Caroline finally gets her humanity back but will never know the final dying words from her mother, very sad. I am looking forward to watching Caroline try and turn Matts / Tylers frowns upside down about vampires. Speaking of Matt not sure if TVD had to fill some shirtless guy quota but Thank You for the Matt changing his shirt scene - Very Hot. Looks like Enzo's character is about to come into the forefront of the show - can't wait. Damon taking the cure with Elena makes sense - Damon deserves true / unconditional Love and Happiness for a change. I hope I am wrong but I still think TVD will find a way somehow drag Delena into S7 to keep fans watching.

A few ?? - Did Bonnie make the ascendant worthless? Since Lily is part Witch - did she place a spell on "the cure" - possible killing anyone who took it? And if YES, since Bonnie has Qetsiyah Magic/Powers can she fix any complications from "the cure"?

Good review Virginia. Even though I preferred this episode to the previous one.

I just went to Twitter and discovered that Ian and Nikki got married yesterday (4/26) somewhere in the Santa Monica mountains. I believe it - there are a LOT of pictures. Both of them in white, her gown pretty, surprisingly modest (long sleeves, high neckline) and with a short train, Ian in a white suit and blue tie (to match his eyes?). Now it's all real. I'm happy for them and wish them all the best, yet I find there's an undeniable lump in my throat. And to be selfish for a moment, just imagine what it will be like watching the rest of S6 of TVD

  27. I liked the episode. Caroline's reaction was very emotive. It was very intense how she called her mother and realised that she would never know his mother's final words because she had burned the letter. I think her storyline will be very interesting the next episodes.
Lily is on the loose!! Well, this was going to happen sooner or later. I'm glad Enzo is supporting her. Finally the writers are using the potential of this character. I'm sure Sarah will appear again before the season finale probably because she will want to know more about her parents and have revenge by trying to kill Damon.
It's true that the cure is becoming a very annoying topic. I don't want Damon to take the cure becuase I like him as a vampire and there's no need of having a lot of scenes talking about the cure. I didn't like that storyline in season 4 and I don't like it now.

Agreed on Caroline, Lily, Enzo, Damon, and the cure!

  29. Giving Caroline back her humanity was the best thing they could've done for the season...makes her much more compelling to watch as she struggles with coming to terms with it. Really loved that they used Lena Fayre's "This World" during the scene when her humanity is switched back on, too that fit the mood so well
