  • 11:33 - Dark Tower - Film And TV Adaption Of Stephen King Series In Development
EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman has found a franchise to sink his teeth into. Sony Pictures has teamed with MRC to co-finance The Dark Tower, Stephen King’s novel series set in a world woven with magic and revolving around the gunslinger Roland Deschain. Sony will distribute what is planned to be the first in a series of movies. A complementary TV series is also being developed by MRC.

The new script is primarily based on the first book in the series, The Gunslinger, and the relationship between Roland and Jake. The film is a blend of horror and fantasy. The latest draft of the script is co-written by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner. It was totally reconceived by Goldsman and Pinkner from the version that had been previously developed and which took root first at Universal and later at Warner Bros. Goldsman is producing through his Weed Road with Imagine Entertainment’s Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins, and I believe the author is also in a producing capacity. Pinkner will be exec producer.

Sony and MRC will go right out after filmmakers with this script, and put this on the fast track that hard-core fans of King’s book have long desired. Numerous stars including Javier Bardem and Russell Crowe have eyed the role of the gunslinger, but that role won’t be filled until after the director is set.

J.K. Rowling is making her screenwriting debut on the trilogy.

“Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the ‘Harry Potter’ series but an extension of the wizarding world,” Rowling explained of the trilogy.

Sources tell Variety that the studio has also considered Nicholas Hoult for the part after working with him on the upcoming “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

The first “Fantastic Beasts” movie is scheduled to arrive Nov. 18, 2016.

  • 22:09 - CW Orders Comedy Series ‘Significant Mother’ For Summer
The CW is continuing its strategy of using its digital studio CW Seed as incubator for comedy series that make the leap to TV. The latest effort to come out of that is Significant Mother, which the CW has ordered to series for this coming summer.

The CW, whose lineup is dominated by hourlong shows, has used summer to experiment with original half-hour comedy. It had success with the reboot of improv show Whose Line Is It Anyway though scripted comedy has been tougher to crack. The two new entries introduced last summer, Backpackers, which also originated at CW Seed, and Canadian import Seed, did not go beyond one season.

  • 20:00 - Fox remaking Rocky Horror Picture Show as TV movie
Fox is doing the Time Warp: EW has learned the broadcaster will make a new TV version of the 40-year-old iconic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The musical midnight movie classic is getting a small-screen modern-day makeover. Only unlike NBC’s prime-time musicals and Fox’s own upcoming Grease, the Rocky Horror reboot will not be live.

The two-hour event will be directed, executive produced, and choreographed by Kenny Ortega (Xanadu, High School Musical) with original film producer Lou Adler as well as Gail Berman also on board. There’s no new writer credited, however, since Fox plans to stick to the text of the original 1973 play by Jim Sharman and Richard O’Brien.

You know that "Full House" reboot that everyone has been talking about? Well, Aunty Becky Lori Loughlin says no one has contacted her about it.

"I have not received any official phone call -- nothing -- and that is the truth," Loughlin tells Zap2it. "My agents, my managers, none of my representation has gotten a phone call. Nobody."

However, even though no one has discussed the reboot with Loughlin, the actress adds that she has heard rumor, once again, that a "Full House" project is in the works.

  2. Even though I'm not on board with Disney's trend of doing live action versions of their classic animations, I will say the whole supporting cast of that movie is stellar, so he's actually in really good company.

  3. They've been trying to get the Dark Tower done for forever, so I'll believe it when I see it...
