The Returned - Adam and Tony - Advance Preview

The Returned, “Tony and Adam,” was directed by Jennifer Getzinger with the teleplay by Graham Roland. Gertzinger’s credits include Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Mad Men, and Masters of Sex. Roland’s name should be familiar as a Carlton Cuse regular from Almost Human, Fringe, and Lost. It’s another tightly written episode that is brilliantly shot and well-acted. There is one particularly gorgeous shot just at the end of the opening scene. Once again, we start in the past with the death of the title character, but the focus of the episode encompasses all of the returned.

We meet Adam (Rhys Ward) and Tony’s (Aaron Douglas) mother in the past. This flashback also takes us back to the Halloween of Julie’s (Sandrine Holt) attack. In the present, on her rounds in the hospital, Julie goes to visit Lucy (Leah Gibson), who is still on life support.

While we l earn a number of things, this episode also raises even more questions about both the how and why of the characters’ returns. We learn that Victor’s (Dylan Kingwell) name isn’t Victor. Rowan (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) makes an important decision. Lena and Claire discover that they are still connected as only twins can be. Peter (Jeremy Sisto) is confronted with his past. Simon (Mat Vairo) and Tommy (Kevin Alejandro) have different memories of his death.

The town has erected a mural to commemorate the deaths of its 84 citizens when the damn broke in 1986. Helen (Michelle Forbes) happens upon it, and is clearly not pleased with her likeness. Of all the returned, Helen seems to be the least stable.

There’s a lot of discussion about fate in this episode. There are lots of interesting reveals and teases in this episode, so you won’t want to miss it! “Tony and Adam” airs on A&E on Monday, March 6 at 10/9c.
