The Originals - Exquisite Corpse - Review

This week’s episode kicks off the final stretch. No more breaks until the finale. This week resolved the Eva-storyline. Vincent played double agent and helped Marcel, Elijah and Klaus save Rebekah’s mind and the captured witches, including Davina. Freya got rid of Esther and revealed her true intentions. Hayley and Gia babysat Hope. Rebekah decided to stay inside Eva.

Most interesting relationship: I feel like I should pick a side when it comes to Klaus and Freya. But I can’t, because I understand where both of them are coming from. They’re the same, and that’s the problem. The fact that they’re too alike means that they both know the other can’t be trusted. They both have that sense of paranoia, they think the other will ruin their plans. If they actually let that go and made the effort to try and trust each other, I’m pretty sure everything would be fine. But their plans are so important that neither is willing to take that chance. All Freya wants is a family. But she’s so worried that Klaus will ruin it, that she feels to only way to have it, is to make them turn on Klaus. Klaus on the other hand, wants to keep his daughter safe at all costs. He knows Freya could be a real asset, but he’s not convinced that she wouldn’t tell Dahlia everything she knows. So he tries to shut her out as much as he can. I, personally, don’t think Freya is working with Dahlia. Each week I become more convinced of that. So if it turns out that she is, I’m going to look really stupid.

Most annoying character: This week Esther managed to not only get on my nerves, but also on those of the Original siblings. So much so, that her daughter decided to evaporate her, but more on that later. First she tries to make amends with Freya (which I get) but then when she realizes that’s not going to happen, she turns on her and tries to get on Klaus’ good side by feeding into his paranoia. When she hears that Hope is alive, her reaction resembles that of an actual (grand)mother, like she didn’t just try to kill Hope just a few months ago. I’m assuming this is the last we’ll see of Esther, unless they bring her back a few seasons from now due to a lack of storylines.

Best confrontation: I like the fact that to everyone, Esther is the lesser of two evils (Mikael), except to Freya. I honestly don’t know what Esther was expecting, but she shouldn’t have been surprised that Freya hates her. Of course she’s not the happy child she used to be. How could she be, after everything she’s been through with Dahlia. I’m completely on Freya’s side here. I like how they showed the death, with the birds rather than bursting into flames or just decompose. It shows how powerful Freya is, especially with that necklace.

Best writing trick: I wondered how they were going handle Rebekah’s body switch situation long term. I have to say, very nicely done. The curse on those witches is tied to Eva’s body so for now Rebekah has to stay in Eva so that the witches won’t die. This way, they can extend this until Claire comes back, whenever that may be. When she’s ready to come back, they’ll suddenly find a quick fix for the curse and bring Kol back as well (since she promised him she would). For now, all we’ll see of Claire is that portrait hanging in the Mikaelson compound.

Worst ending of a storyline: When I say ‘worst’, I don’t mean that it was a bad ending. But I had higher hopes for this storyline. I felt like Eva was dealt with too quickly (and too easily). Everything in the previous episode indicated that Eva would be difficult to get rid of. And yet, in only an episode, she’s gone. Like I said, I just had higher hopes.

What I want: So Dahlia is coming. Now this is a storyline I have high hopes for. The entire season has been leading up to this. I really hope this storyline isn’t over as quickly as the Eva-storyline was. I want this to last until the season finale at least. There are only five episodes left, and I want each episode to be action packed. No more fillers! I want the wolf situation to be resolved, and with that I mean that I want them to get rid of Jackson. Although I have a bad feeling that it will be Aiden who bites the dust. I would like to see more of what Hope can do. They showed us a bit a few episodes back, but since then whe haven't seen much. I want a decent storyline for Davina, Josh and Cami. And last but not least: I’ve heard rumors that a main character will bite the dust and that it will have a big impact on the other characters. I think it might be Marcel. He’s barely had a storyline all season, and it would have a big impact. The only other person I can think of would be Cami, but I doubt they’d get rid of their only human.
Best quotes: Hayley: “Are you serious? She puts on a talent show, he has every vampire in the quarter kissing your ass and your final answer is “Screw you”?”
Klaus: “Mother, Freya. Freya, mother.”
Rebekah: “Bloody hell.”

So that’s it for this week, check in again next week for an all new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
