The Messengers - Strange Magic - Advance Preview: "In Houston, We Got Problems"
Apr 24, 2015
Reviews The Messengers WMThe Messengers premiered last week to some disappointing ratings but it seems the general consensus from what I've seen is that people really enjoyed the show. A lot of people praised the dark tone and the vague mystery as a standout for the series. In my advanced preview of the pilot, I mentioned that it didn't matter if we got the answers in the pilot, because if you did, why would you come back? Though, having had the privilege of seeing more than just the pilot I knew answers were coming. The pilot ended with all of the Messengers either in Houston, or on their way there and still unaware of each other. This week, expect for the heavy hand of exposition to come crashing down in Houston as our "Angels" all converge there for various reasons.
Vera Buckley, She's an Atheist. When The Man appeared to Vera in the pilot, he came with the news that Vera's son, Michael, is alive and he knows where he is. He's agreed to tell her, if she does something for him. That something is a pillow to the face of fellow messenger in a coma, Rose. A flashback will reveal a bit more as to where Vera was when she lost her son, and what song was playing when it happened. (Hint: It shares a title with this episode.) Too bad for The Man as he will have to chalk this one up to a loss because Rose will come out of her coma this week, so his evil plan to kill her looks to be a bust.
Call it coincidence or divine intervention, but all of the messengers will end up at Houston Memorial hospital. Josh made his way there thanks to his vision, but gets sidetracked when he sees his father on TV denouncing him from the church. So, where does Josh go? The chapel of course. Raul takes a turn for the worse thanks to his gunshot and Erin drops him off at the hospital after a seeing a poster for it on the street.(This won't be the first time a character will follow the signs in the episode) Of course, turning up with a gunshot wound is going to raise questions so Raul, Erin and Amy find themselves playing hide and seek in the hospital from law enforcement and end up in the chapel. Peter simply gets dropped off at the hospital, hungry and broke, but fret not because there's a collection box in the chapel filled with money ripe for the taking. (A messenger of the Lord, stealing money from the church...)
In the chapel, information is going to be thrown at us via Rose, and Vera is kind of like the voice of the audience balking at how ridiculous all of this is. Rose has the gift of understanding, so she lays it all out; Who The Man is, that she can help Vera find her son, why they were chosen, and later what they have been chosen to do. Vera is not having any of it though and is quickly on her way to being my favorite with her lines about how insane this is. Rose tells Vera she is going to have to learn to accept her destiny and Vera then ends up paired off with Joshua on a mission of sorts that starts to set up another mystery and is meant to help her accept her fate/find her son, and everyone else tapers off to do their own thing. (I actually love that they paired Josh and Vera together, the atheist and the preacher...fantastic!) All the worries about The Man not being evil enough should be put to rest after he we watch him doing some pretty Devilishly manipulative and evil stuff.
The Man is the least of the worries the characters will face though. There is still the aftermath of everything that happened last week when our characters "died". Raul is still a framed fugitive with El Jefe after him and of course that puts his family at risk. Erin, also a fugitive, is unaware that Ronnie has had an Amber alert put out for Amy making her a kidnapper. Alice and the police are looking for Peter after her murdered Sam while Vera and Alan find themselves unemployed and shut out for answers by the military. The hour is a really good follow up for anyone who felt in the dark after the pilot. It clearly sets up that no matter where they go, these guys will not be able to run from this fate. They have a job to do(a job that has something to do with seals and horsemen but I will get too into it, gotta save something for the review), and The Man is determined to stay one step ahead of them.
Why You Should Watch: Forget the ratings. The show is heading in a really good direction and it's really fun to watch. The blend of the personal turmoil mixed with the supernatural destiny is done really well. Yes, some of the answers come out a bit clunky, but now that it is out of the way I'm sure things can only go up from here. The serious tone and the layers of new mystery help make the show an intriguing watch. It's unfortunate because it feels the network had no idea what to do with the show but Strange Magic is a pretty strong episode that has the right kind of balance. Its also makes the song Strange Magic feel really creep and sets the characters on a clear arc as far as the supernatural elements are concerned. Don't let the ratings scare you away from what is sure to be one hell of a summer.
Strange Magic airs Friday April 24th at 9pm EST on the CW.
What did you think of the pilot? What are you excited to see going forward? What is your theory about where Vera's son is? Which power that we know of us do you think is the best? Where would you have placed the show on the schedule? Sound off below
Come on USA! You can do this! Tune in The Messengers every Friday at 9/8c for 12 weeks. They deserve better! A better day, a full season, in the Fall schedule. Is a really good show!! Tell your friends about the show! I'm from Argentina and I support this show since the beginning.
ReplyDeleteGreat preview. Can't wait for tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the preview. I'm very excited for episode 2, I'm actually just about to watch the pilot again for the third time, ha.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading! Hope you like the episode
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading! I'm glad you liked it so much to be watching it a third time!
ReplyDeleteThe only other new broadcast shows I've liked enough to watch multiple times this season have been Constantine, JtV and HTGAWM, this is the show I had really been waiting for ever since last upfronts though, so far it doesn't seem like it will disappoint. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat Preview, thanks for posting. Absolutely love the direction, agree about the rating.. it's yet to find footing but it will. Reminds me a little of Lost character wise, which is no bad thing. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat preview. I can tell you really liked the second episode better than the pilot. I am eager to watch it. I really liked the pilot, despite the crushing ratings. That 0.1 in A18-34 really hurts. I pray that we get resolution at season's end.
ReplyDeleteThis show is gonna get preempted tonight. It will be aired on Saturday in some areas so expect a lower rating compared to last week.
ReplyDeleteShould be fun. Hoping for the ratings to slightly raise, not expecting wonders.
ReplyDeleteSOME areas right?!
ReplyDeletedon't want to start this but can't help it, REALLY sorry. Raul and Erin shared a look in the pilot that i've replayed over and over again LOL, how are their interactions in the episodes, hints of romance or still fear for her life and Amy's? and pairing Joshua and Vera IS hilarious. Is Rose REALLY a Messenger? from the sneak peek she looks more, i don't know divine, like she's a LITERAL Angel that fell. The way she talked about The Devil, it felt like she knew him PERSONALLY
ReplyDeleteI did enjoy it. Much better than the pilot to me.
ReplyDeleteThat .1 was really sad but at least the .3 held?
I loved/love all of those shows actually and I know what you mean about the wait. I was hoping it'd get picked up when it was first announced as in development so I'm just so excited to finally be watching it.
ReplyDeleteErin and Raul are only together for a little bit. Then Raul's story kind of gets annoying to me.
ReplyDeleteYes, rose is a messenger and there's a reason for why she speaks with such certainty
aw man! and huh cool, it still surprises me that there's more Messengers than just Vera, Raul, Erin, Joshua and Peter. They made it sound like it was just the characters i just mentioned
ReplyDeleteMy passion for love and life has made me to take to the Internet to
ReplyDeletewarn Internet users particularly those in search of solution to their
problems to beware of and avoid comments about spell caster that can
use their magical power in helping you out with your problems. I don't
want anyone to be fooled because i was a victim of this fraudsters
who claimed to be spell casters. I am Wimberly William and i was having
a difficult time in my relationship as my wife couldn't give birth to a
child. Although my wife and i loved each other very much as it were.We kept on
hoping and for 6 years there weren't any sign of breakthrough .As days
goes by,i will always weep because at that time i was really down.
Even though my wife tried to always be by my side, only time would
tell as we couldn't cope with pressure coming from friends and she had to leave
me for another man. I was now left to face my problem alone even
though my mom would always talk to me and console me on phone. Things
went from bad to worse when i was sacked from the private organization
i was working because been happily married was a criteria that was
needed and that i was now lacking owing to my failure to have a child that has made my
wife leave me for another man leaving me single. I kept on
searching and hoping i would find a solution to my problem but there
wasn't any coming. I contacted lots of spell caster as i saw them on
the Internet but all were scams as they demanded money from me
frequently and nothing happened. i had to relocate from Texas city
United state to Jamaica where my mom was residing and also because i
became racially abused because of my color .I spent 4 months with my
mom and together we kept on looking for solution still to no avail.
There came a faithful day when i met my high school mate who knew i
was happily married and living in Texas city United state with my
wife and had to ask why i flew back to Jamaica. I explained my
problem to her and with sincere desire in wanting my problems solved
she led me to DR JAMIN ABAYOMI. Although i was doubtful but soon as i
explained my problem to him,he laughed and gave me a maximum of
72 hours for my wife to come back and for she go give birth. I
did all i was asked to do which included me traveling back to Texas
city United state. I traveled back to Texas city united state,on my
arrival during the early hours of the morning,my phone rang and guess
who?it was my wife who called asking for my forgiveness and saying
she was coming back home. She came few hours later and on her knees she
pleaded for forgiveness. Although it was a tough decision for me to
make because of all the pains i have been through. I love her and
needed her back so i had no option but to forgive her. We sat together
and while she was resting her head on my chest we had romantic
conversation and talked about things that we have never spoken about
and like husband and wife the urge came to have sex and we had sex for
a very long time that day. The next day which was still within the
72 hours given by DOCTOR JAMIN ABAYOMI she felt something different in her
body and immediately she went for a check up and to our greatest
surprise, she was pregnant. How possible could this be but it happened
and am very thankful also my skin color that made me racially abused
was changed to the preferred and now we are now happily married again
and no racial discrimination. All thanks to DR JAMIN ABAYOMI for his
solution.
