These overnights are your first look at the ratings and a precursor to what could lie ahead. And we take into account additional benchmarks including the expected Live + Same Day demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence. Keep in mind that results for any sporting event are always approximate.

Ratings Breakdown:
Tops for the night, as always, was “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS, which scored a 9.5/16 in the 8 p.m. half-hour. But a loss of 39 percent for freshman “The Odd Couple” at 8:30 p.m. (5.8/ 9) is certainly no guarantee there will be a second season. Next on the Eye net was officially relocated sophomore “Mom” at a second-place 5.6/ 9 in the 9 p.m. half-hour, which concludes for the season next week. And a repeat of “The Big Bang Theory” at 9:30 p.m. (#3: 5.0/ 8) led into a typical 4.9/ 9 for older-skewing “Elementary” at 10 p.m.
Third for the night was NBC, which featured a repeat of “The Blacklist” (#4: 2.3/ 4 at 8 p.m.), an original installment of “The Blacklist” (#3: 5.3/ 8 at 9 p.m.) and “Dateline” (#2: 3.9/ 7), which at 10 p.m. was NBC’s strongest metered-market rating in that hour since “Peter Pan Live!” on Dec. 4 (4.7/8). Assuming NBC leaves “The Blacklist” on Thursday next season, the goal will be to find a compatible drama at 10 p.m.
Elsewhere, Fox’s tired “Bones” (#3: 3.2/ 5) led into a series-low 2.0/ 3 in the overnights for recent entry “Backstrom” at 9 p.m., which is not expected back next season. And The CW has sprung a leak in the Thursday 8 p.m. hour care of once reliable “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 1.1/ 2), which slipped by 27 percent from the 1.5/ 2 on the year-ago evening. Next was sophomore “Reign” (#5: 0.7/ 1), which is certainly not worthy of its third season renewal.
