Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. These overnights are your first look at the ratings and a precursor to what could lie ahead. And we take into account other benchmarks including the expected demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence.

Ratings Breakdown:
CBS and Fox tied for overnight Wednesday leadership (in rating), with a 5.8 rating/9 share in the household overnights for two-hours of “American Idol” on Fox consistent from the year-ago evening. But competing “Survivor’s” (#2: 5.7/10) expected advantage over the first hour of “American Idol” in adults 18-49 should be enough to lift CBS to victory for the evening in the demo.
“Survivor,” which was unfortunately very predictable last night, led into a dominant performance in the overnights for dramas “Criminal Minds” (6.4/10) and recently introduced “CSI: Cyber” (5.4/ 9) from 9-11 p.m. While “Criminal Minds” may become the parent to a second spin-off series next season (remember short-lived “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior” in 2011?), that 5.4 overnight rating for “CSI: Cyber” (coupled with the older demographic profile) may not be enough to warrant a second season.
Third-place ABC was below average because of the repeat of “Modern Family” in the 9 p.m. half-hour, which scored a 4.0/ 6 (#3) into a 3.8/ 6 (#3) for a 9:30 p.m. edition of “The Goldbergs.” If “The Goldbergs” builds from the “Modern Family” encore in the key young adult demos (and chances are it will), ABC could ultimately pair it with the multi Emmy Award winner next season. Moving it to Wednesday at 8 p.m. to lift the evening may be a better move, however.
Earlier in the evening on ABC were “The Middle” (#3: 5.0/ 9) and the regularly scheduled edition of “The “Goldbergs” (#3: 4.6/ 7) from 8-9 p.m. And capping it off was three-year old drama “Nashville” at a typically modest 3.4/ 6 at 10 p.m. (#2). As previously mentioned, “Nashville” could very well be back for a fourth season because of the need for more original episodes in off-network.
Elsewhere, NBC populated this third Wednesday in April with encore telecasts of “The Mysteries of Laura” (#4: 3.0/ 5), “Law & Order: SVU” (#4: 2.7/ 4) and “Chicago PD” (#3: 2.8/ 5). And reliable “Arrow” on The CW (#5: 1.9/ 3) led into a 1.3/ 2 (#5) for veteran “Supernatural” at 9 p.m., which does need to end at some point. One year earlier, former CW time period occupant “The 100” scored a 1.4/ 2 in the household overnights out of a 2.0/ 3 for “Arrow.”

About the Daily Ratings
Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

Reliable Arrow?

Crossing my fingers for Arrow. I'd like to see it hitting 1s again.

ReplyDeleteWhat does it need in the T25 to have a chance of being over 1? I've not followed too closely the T25 and Early Numbers in terms of how much they deviate for Arrow

Oh wow.
ReplyDeleteJust checked it, before this break they fall 0,2. Before that it were 0,1-0 adjustments.
ReplyDeleteThis is always an un-precise exercise especially with the CW in which numbers are so low that rounding makes a lot of difference but my current estimates say that Arrow tends to hold 91% of its top25 numbers (in finals, that is). So assuming it follows the pattern, it would need a 1.1. Technically, even a 1.0 could do it if it's like a 1.04 and it results in 0.95, but it's a close call.

ReplyDeleteI think that is highly unfair. Under Dawn-led-CW, sure, but Pedowitz has been very supportive of the show and has given it multiple good timeslots, time and time again. I don't think you are justified in saying that. It made sense to move it midseason to give the newbie the better chance, it's just logical.

ReplyDeleteExactly, I can't understand that it's rising in ratings because so many people say that's an horrible show.
ReplyDeleteIt's not dumping. HOD showed it can actually be a timeslot upgrade and Jane the Virgin is repeating better on Fridays than on Mondays. The Voice destroys the show on Mondas due to the heavy cross competition (as seen by the spikes it had during the winter). In addition, JV hasn't even bee nominated for an Emmy, let alone win it.

ReplyDeleteThey may do it because the repeat there last week surpassed the original in viewers and nearly tied in the demo. Jane would have lower expectations on Fri so if it stayed around its Monday numbers it would be good, and it could live there for years...
