This is one of the back end episodes I've been looking forward to and in many ways it was exactly what I wanted it to be. Several things I don't remember from the book. The Reverend's testimony being one of them. I loved that little smirk he gave Claire as everything turned out exactly what way he wanted. It was awesome; made the trial for me.
The Reverend's testimony was in the book, but it was very different. He had gotten bit by some dogs. Claire had offered to look at it, but he rebuked her. In his testimony, he revealed his infected leg causing Claire to cry out that he was going to die if he didn't fix his leg. Everyone in the crowd thought that she was threatening him.
I really liked the episode, but wish that the end depicted that Jamie had doubt what she said, until he saw her disappearing in front of the rock.
I was okay with them removing Jamie's doubt but I hated that they switched out Jamie seeing her begin to disappear in favor of the (IMHO) weaker 'I wasn't ready for you to go.' I was stumped as to why they'd make that change.
I'll check all these things you're saying about the book once the season is over, but now I'm enjoying the beauty of the show, dear... I cried in the end, I mean he took her to the stones, love is sacrifice no doubt... and she didn't leave!!, and she came back to him and he cried, BEAUTIFUL!!, I wish I could say something about Geillis but the truth is that her sentence wasn't that unfair, after all she actually killed her husband so...
This episode was absolutely amazing. The scenes in the courtroom, Geillis and Claire, Claire telling Jamie the truth. This show like Game of Thrones and a few others are on a whole other level!!! I loved it!!!
I love the show and this episode was amazing!! I knew Geillis was a traveler when she said "F&^king barbecue". Jamie didn't know what the word "f*&king" meant, I thought Claire would have caught on. I think I'll read the books after the first season.
ME TOO!!, well, honestly I didn't know at the moment but I was like, wait, how did she know the word "fucking" if Jamie didn't know it??, but I saw it as a mistake from the production, I never even imagined that Geillis could be a time traveler too.
It was a masterful manipulation of the crowd. He knew those people well. He saw that Ned had softened everyone else's testimony against Claire. If he'd claimed she was evil for saving an innocent child's life he might have lost some of his congregation. (He'd likely already lost some when Claire saved that boy. I bet people in the town were gossiping about how he would have let that boy die.) So he decided to call her a hero. He knew that someone would accuse Claire of being so evil that she used a good deed (saving the kid) to destroy a just man (the Reverend.) He walked out of that courtroom with his entire congregation back on his side.
The smirk was for Claire and us..to let us know that his testimony went exactly as he'd planned.
What I loved about it was that it presented him as a smart man who liked his power and knows how to hang onto it.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteI don't get it. What was the purpose of his testimony and the smirk? I got kind of lost in that one.
